Whatever Happened to Kelly Taylor

In faraway Beverly Hills, the spoiled, gorgeous teenager Kelly Taylor seemed to have everything, living every girl’s dream. Her daily routine only involved shopping, partying, having a good time with boys, while at the same time popping diet pills, undergoing plastic surgery, and attempting a modeling career. Her estranged father, the pains of living with her substance-abusing mother, and her losing her virginity upon being date raped brought her to an early maturity, helping her set more far-reaching goals for the future. And so, after school she decided that she wanted to major in Psychology. Life, however, is not a bed of roses. Shortly after reaching adulthood, she embarked on her own (and tougher) personal odyssey, always impeccably dressed and groomed. Over the next six years or so, Kelly got burned in a fire, joined a cult, developed a cocaine addiction, went to rehab, lived a remake of Single White Female with a “friend” she met there, found out she had a sister of the same age in Mexico (her father led a double life), got shot, had a short-term memory loss, was sexually harassed by her boss, got pregnant, had a miscarriage, found out that it would be difficult for her to have children, got raped, shot and killed her rapist (and then the charges were dropped because she acted in self-defense). In the series finale, in 2000, we see her flirting with the love of her life, Dylan McKay, at the wedding of her best friend Donna Martin to her stepbrother David Silver, and everything just seems perfect. After all these trials and tribulations, the time has come for a perfect happy ending, right? Well, no. Happy endings are a myth, even for high-rated shows. In 2007, the CW Television Network announced the launching of the spin-off TV series 90210. In the new series, a family of four moves from Kansas to Beverly Hills, where the father of the family is to serve as the new principal of the legendary West Beverly Hills High School. The school staff includes the thirty-something Kelly, now working as guidance counselor, who makes frequent guest appearances (one of the tricks used by the series’ producers to attract viewers of the former series was to invite members of the original cast). Kelly now is a disillusioned single mother, with no friends, no social life, and no boyfriend. She leads a rather pathetic existence in a well-appointed house, living with her four-year-old son and her teenage manic-depressive sister, and she often tries to reach the absentee Dylan on the phone to discuss custody matters. Exhausted and sad, she doesn’t seem to remember her once adventurous and glamorous life. Once in a while, she may go on a disappointing date with some attractive coworker or arrange to go out for a drink in a nearby bar with old friends. Still, she will never complain that she was demoted to a guest star because she knows that this could easily happen to anyone. She knows that the expression “taken from life” is a perfect description of her situation.

Anyone who knows me, knows Beverly Hills 90210 has been one of my all time favorite TV shows. This was my cover photo on my Facebook in college for awhile. My brother and I would watch the all day reruns in the summer together and gossip about the characters. Kelly and Dylan were my favorite couple, sorry Donna and David. To hear of Luke Perry’s passing is heartbreaking. I give all my love to his family and friends, wish I could do more. Watching the reunion without him will be too hard for me. I always saw him and Kelly as soulmates on the show, to see it not happen, to see him to reunited with their kid on the show, to have Luke miss out on being there and being back filming with his friends is too much and too sad to think about. In this case, it’s one time where I feel things are better off left alone or at least wrapped up to honor his memory. Στο μακρυνό Μπέβερλυ Χιλς, η κακομαθημένη πανέμορφη έφηβη Κέλυ Τέηλορ φαινόταν να τα έχει όλα και να ζει το όνειρο κάθε συνομήλικης της. Η καθημερινότητα της συμπεριλάμβανε μόνο shopping, parties και αγόρια αλλά και χάπια διαίτης, πλαστικές επεμβάσεις και απόπειρες για καριέρα στο modeling. Ένας απών πατέρας, η δύσκολη συμβίωση  με την αλκοολικιά - ναρκομανή μητέρα της και το γεγονός ότι βιάστηκε τη πρώτη της φορά από συμμαθητή της (date rape) είχαν σαν αποτέλεσμα  τη πρόωρη ωρίμανση της καθώς και πιό ουσιαστικούς μελλοντικούς στόχους. Έτσι αποφοιτώντας από το λύκειο αποφασίζει να σπουδάσει ψυχολογία. Η ζωή βέβαια δεν χαρίζεται σε κανέναν και έτσι από την ενηλικίωσή της και μετά αρχίζει να βιώνει την προσωπική της Οδύσσεια στη πιο σκληρή της εκδοχή (ντυμένη και κουρεμένη πάντα άψογα). Μέσα σε έξι χρόνια περίπου η Κέλυ, καίγεται σε μια πυρκαγιά, μπλέκει με μια αίρεση, εθίζεται στη κοκαίνη, πηγαίνει για αποτοξίνωση, ζει το ριμέικ της ταινίας Single White Female με μια “φίλη” που γνωρίζει εκεί, ανακαλύπτει μια συνομήλικη αδερφή από το Μεξικό (ο πατέρας της ζούσε παράλληλες ζωές!), πυροβολείται, χάνει τη μνήμη της προσωρινά, παρένοχλείται σεξουαλικά από το αφεντικό της, μένει έγκυος, αποβάλει, μαθαίνει πως είναι πολύ δύσκολο να αποκτήσει παιδιά,  βιάζεται, πυροβολεί και σκοτώνει τον βιαστή της (φυσικά αθωώθηκε αφού βρισκόταν σε αυτοάμυνα). Το τέλος της τηλεοπτικής σειράς το 2000 τη βρίσκει να ξαναφλερτάρει με τον έρωτα της ζωής της, Ντύλαν Μακ Κέι στο γάμο της καλύτερης της φίλης Ντόνα Μάρτιν και του ετεροθαλούς αδερφού της Ντέιβιντ Σίλβερ και όλα απλώς δείχνουν τέλεια. Μέτα από τόσες δοκιμασίες το απόλυτο Happy End έφτασε, σωστά;

Λάθος! Τα Happy Ends είναι ένας μύθος ακόμα και για τις εκπομπές υψηλής τηλεθέασης. Το 2007 το τηλεοπτικό δίκτυο CW ανακοινώνει την έναρξη της spin-off σειράς 90210 όπου μια τετραμελής οικογένεια από το Κάνσας μετακομίζει στο Μπέβερλυ Χιλς λόγω της μετάθεσης του πατέρα στη θέση του νέoυ διευθυντή του θρυλικού West Beverly High. Ανάμεσα στο προσωπικό του σχολείου συναντάμε την 30 κάτι πλέον Κέλυ Τέηλορ ως σύμβουλο καθοδήγησης σε συχνές guest εμφανίσεις (ένα από τα κόλπα των παραγωγών της σειράς για “νούμερα” ήταν να προσελκύσουν κυρίως θεατές της original σειράς με εμφανίσεις βετεράνων ηθοποιών της στους ίδιους με τους τότε ρόλους). Η Κέλυ είναι πια μια συμβιβασμένη ανύπαντρη μητέρα, χωρίς φίλους, κοινωνική ζωή ή γκόμενο. Ζει μάλλον μίζερα σε μια περιποιημένη μονοκατοικία μαζί με τον τετράχρονο γιο της και την έφηβη μανιοκαταθλιπτική αδερφή της ενώ συχνά προσπαθεί να συνεννοηθεί με τον εξαφανισμένο Ντύλαν τηλεφωνικώς για θέματα κηδεμονίας. Κουρασμένη και θλιμένη, δεν δείχνει να θυμάται καν την άλλοτε περιπετειώδη και λαμπερή ζωή της. Σπάνια, ίσως να βγει ένα απογοητευτικό ραντεβού με κάποιον γοητευτικό συνάδελφο ή θα κανονίσει να πιει ένα ποτό κοντά στο σπίτι της με μια φίλη από παλιά. Αλλά δεν θα παραπονεθεί ποτέ που από πρωταγωνίστρια έγινε guest  γιατί γνωρίζει πως κάτι τέτοιο μπορεί να συμβεί πολύ εύκολα σε κάποιον. Γνωρίζει πως στη περίπτωση της τελικά ισχύει απόλυτα αυτό που λέμε “βγαλμένο από τη ζωή”.
