The thing that frustrates me the most about the Kerri Strug Atlanta Mythology is that it takes one of the most competitive, ambitious, intelligent and proactive US athletes of her era in the sport and turns her into an abused drone who just did what her coach told her to do "for the team" because he shouted "you can do it!"
The thing that makes me sad is that no one will ever make a movie about the athlete who fought against what the entire apparatus of her team wanted to try and hold her place in the 1992 Olympic AA qualification against the stumbling World Champion team mate. Who left gym after gym when her coaches proved either actively harmful to her (having her compete with serious injuries), were shuffling her to be a clone of their real star gymnast, or were generally incompetent. She (and her family) returned to the Karolyis because they didn't see a better option, and in a story that would repeat the few times it happened, her family put down rules about how she would be treated--which allegedly they followed because bullies often back down when there is resistance. I want the movie about that athlete standing at the end of the runway thinking both about a gold medal for her team but also about a chance at an Olympic all around denied to her 4 years before and a vault final for herself.
And when it was over she made business choices for herself not "for the team of sisters" she barely knew and the organization that wanted to control that Olympic team and cash in on their success.
Kerri Strug is a badass and for all the reasons no one remembers about her.

“I do wonder what would have happened in the Women’s Team Final in 1996 if Team USA competed in Olympic rotation - starting out on vault and finishing on floor. I still think they would have gotten the gold - everything was working for them - and I think Kerri would have aced both vaults being on fresh legs and not being in such a clutch position.”

Quick Thought – Sunday, August 14, 2022: Playing Hurt
Quick Thought – Sunday, August 14, 2022: Playing Hurt
Read Hebrews 12:3-17 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? Hebrews 12:7 Reflect Today we reach the end of the Olympics, and I’m reflecting on some of the incredible performances we’ve seen in the past two weeks. I’m also reminded of some very brave athletes from previous Olympics who are remembered…

Lmaooo Olivia did a photoshoot for Elle Magazine and she has the pickle bookstore cap in on of the pics. Thats like Oh I want Privacy but also let me wear this to connect myself to Harry in a magazine.
Oh my god she is unbelievable. She’s clearly on her redemption tour, but she is absolutely full of shit. Look at this nonsense she’s trying to spin:
Tumblr media
Let’s start off with acting like her film had a point to make. Then remind people that everything that’s happened is because of “misogyny”
Over tea, Wilde confides her disappointment with the way the story has been “minimized into bite-size TikTok points.” When I offer that it could be good publicity, she says her intention was not, as she jokes, to “throw myself into the flames for the movie.” She wants people to pay attention to what’s onscreen, and is frustrated that the press hasn’t. “This film is trying to ask big questions, but [it’s] ‘Let’s just focus on this sideshow over here,’ ” she says. “Having been a known figure for a while...makes me well-equipped to have a Teflon exterior. But it also means that you’re under a different kind of microscope. It’s brought my attention to the media and how it pits women against one another.” (For what it’s worth, she has nothing but praise for her leading lady. “She’s so generous in her acting in every scene. She makes everyone around her better.”)
Move on to pretending she’s still working on a film that’s been shelved. Make a “subtle” point on how she’s the victim here.
Meanwhile, Wilde is developing, and set to direct, a Kerri Strug biopic with the working title Perfect, and reportedly has a deal with Sony to direct a hush-hush, female-centric Marvel feature. “A few of the things I have in development are about the raw determination of women,” she says. “Clearly, I idolize women who survive a system that they feel challenged by.”
Aligns herself with Florence and once again says she, Olivia, is the real victim.
Perhaps it’s something she can relate to as she navigates this latest chapter. “It is shocking to see so many untruths about yourself traded as fact,” she says. “Florence had a really wise comment that we didn’t sign up for a reality show. And I love that she put it that way, because it’s as though the general public feels that if you are making something that you’re selling to the public, you somehow have accepted that your life will be torn to shreds by a pack of wolves. No, that’s actually not part of the job description. Never was.”
Bring up Harry, try to align with the queer community, remind people about her important “female pleasure” point.
“I was interested in acknowledging female pleasure that doesn’t come from penetration.... The one area of cinema where I don’t see people being held back [about sex] in this way is queer cinema. Harry has a film coming out, My Policeman, which is a wonderful example of real eroticism that is explored and treated in an adult way without being fetishized or objectified.
THIS IS THE CHERRY ON TOP. Act as though she wasn’t the one who made the film all about sex. Aligns herself with Florence again.
“But it’s interesting because Florence very wisely pointed out that a lot of attention has been given to the sex scenes. And I think she’s so right. I completely agree with her that it’s overshadowing everything else that the movie’s about, which is so interestingly ironic because one of the uses of sex in Victory is as a tool of distraction. When Florence pointed that out that this film is so much bigger and better than just the sex scenes, I was so happy that she said that because I feel the same way.”
Remind people she’s a good mom by pretending she doesn’t get papped with them and that she’s with them all the time, you just don’t know it.
“I share custody of my kids with my ex. If I’m photographed not with my kids, people assume I have abandoned them, like my kids are just somewhere in a hot car without me. The suggestion is that I have abandoned my role as a mother. You know why you don’t see me with my kids? Because I don’t let them get photographed. Do you know the lengths that I go to to protect my kids from being seen by you?”
And it goes on in the same ridiculous manner. Read it here. If you want. And don’t forget… she’s “dating” Harry Styles and “he” bought her this hat.

Why did Kerri Strug vault on an injured leg?
(this post is not aimed at gymnastics fans who know most of this already, but at my followers from a pervious blog life who have stuck around for reasons that are beyond me)
Let’s talk about motivation and narrative.  I’ve deliberately chosen a picture of Strug from Atlanta which is neither her in excruciating pain nor of her being carried by her coach in a self aggrandizing exercise so that he could be seen on camera.
And that’s where I’d like to start.  During the 1996 Women’s Gymnastics Team Optionals (what we misname the Team Final because the structure of the sport was different at the time) the United States was leading going into the last rotation and in a 6 athletes up 5 scores count format where Dominique Moceanu had fallen as the 5th athlete in the United States rotation.  Kerri Strug injured her leg on her first vault, and as she limped back to the start she was told “you can do it” by her personal coach Bela Karolyi and she vaulted to an immediate pain and stork stand before collapsing to the ground and into sports legend.
If you were alive at the time and in the United States you may remember watching it live.  First of all you didn’t.  It was shown on a tape delay even though the event took place in the United States.  NBC and basically everyone in the United States immediately framed this as a brave act of an injured athlete vaulting to win team gold.  The reality, though not clear at the time because the Russians were still competing on floor, was that Moceanu’s vaults had been enough to assure the team medal.
A counter narrative became quite popular as the Karolyis and the US gymnastics system became rightly associated with abuse and forcing gymnasts to compete with injuries--in fact there were at least two broken bones among the Magnificent Seven gymnasts even before they started competing in Atlanta).  This narrative frames the vault as a form of child abuse, where expectation and conditioning sent her down that vault runway for no reason as it wasn’t needed to win.  But that version is no more true than the one that said she did it for Team Gold and while it often comes from a place of wanting to see the humanity of a young woman it comes at the price of denying her agency and ignoring her own life experience.
Kerri Strug was an adult, this was her second Olympic Games, and she had individual goals and ambitions that motivated her to vault that day.
Strug was a strong all around gymnast but at the 1992 Olympics she and then reigning world champion Kim Zmeskal found themselves in a close battle for a place in the Barcelona AA final.  Zmeskal had fallen on beam in the compulsory exercises and as she clawed her way back up during optionals it was Strug that she would eventually knock out of that final by virtue of being the third ranking US gymnast.  One of the reasons that Strug remained in the sport for the next four years was her desire to make that all around final.  During that time she moved between several gyms and was labeled a vagabond, a wonderer, and often belittled as a gym hopper despite the fact that each move was either necessitated by things outside of her control or or otherwise entirely rational.  This was a driven, intelligent, experienced athlete.
And in the structure of the 1996 Olympics the team optional round didn’t just determine the team medals but it was also the qualification for individual finals.  Kerri Strug was a strong vaulter and had every reason to believe she could make the vault event final and she did in fact make the Atlanta all around final (though had to withdraw because of her injury).
Both traditional narratives, besides being wrong, perpetuate terrible things about the way people view the sport.  It encourages people who have no understanding of the risks and dangers of elite gymnastics to think that people should push through injuries for the sake of national glory, or it turns a young woman who had agency and ambitions into a child forced to do something against her will (and hey if you want that narrative can I just point across the competition floor to Strug’s friend and teammate Dominique Moceanu?)
And now are getting a biopic about this that shows all the signs investing in none of the truth and all the narrative.  Joy.
