hehehe- my kid's ancestral music gene is kicking in- she came down to tell me about the game series she's been watching a let's play of and this one song was just really really good she liked it so much but it sounded kind of familiar and she started humming it
and I'm like, "oh sure, Ralph Stanley, you've been hearing that one all your life." and i get the patented 17 year old "no mother how dare you suggest i might like something bluegrass" stare
And i pull it up on youtube as she pulls up the metal version of it from the game.
SUCH BETRAYAL lol "toldya, eventually we all succumb to 'but bluegrass is pretty fucking punk' kid. it's in your bones like the hypermobility and the cornbread"

Albums of the Week! The top spot goes to Haunt’s wonderful new album, Golden Arm. When you hear this, pay close attention to the guitars. The reverence, adulation, and proficiency of the craft is on full display here. It’s an absolute delight. Khemmis just released a 2-track single, which is great and reminded me to put Deceiver on repeat. Blood Star’s debut is still hitting hard, and Undeath’s new live record riddles my body with joy. Finally, don’t sleep on Afsky.
1. Haunt - Golden Arm (2023)
2. Khemmis - Deceiver
3. Undeath - Live…From The Grave (RSD 2023)
4. Death - Fate: The Best of Death (RSD 2023)
5. Blood Star - First Sighting (2023)
6. Vital Spirit - Still As The Night, Cold As The Wind
7. Dio - Live in Fresno 1983 (RSD 2023)
8. Afsky - Om Hundrede År (2023)
9. Death - “Scream Bloody Gore” (Somebody please tell me why this title is stylized with quotation marks!)
What did you play this week?

Thursday, June 22: Khemmis, "Maw of Time"
How Khemmis became both beloved and controversial in the underground scene was something of a mystery: there was the eventual signing with Nuclear Blast, but that wasn’t exactly shifting to a major label and toning down their sound.  For the past 10 or so years it mostly seemed like the Colorado act was just doing their thing, and “Maw of Time” felt both natural to Desolation and the band as a whole.  The sludgy doom riffing was there, Phil Pendergast and Ben Hutcherson bellowed and growled where applicable, and the bass and drums both charged and swung.  Khemmis stood out by virtue of being among the absolute best at their chosen subgenre, and while that didn’t lend much room for variety, the power of their attack made “Maw of Time” another ripping banger and that crushed all comers under the weight of its heaviness.

this song i love, but kind of reminds me of eddie x chrissy being doomed af lol
"As I burned one Through smoke-lit eyes I pushed too far past a glorious high Into a void Devoid of light I lost control of my muscle and mind
And so I stepped Close to the edge My mandible broken on the end of a night Succumbing to shock I clung to my life Just as my tongue was hanging agape to my eyes
And so I fell Into the night Psilocybin dreams Claiming my mind Into a void There is no savior Where is my life? Where is my darling now?
Became lost from space and time And you were scared You saw my bloodied body Your greatest fear Had been fully realized That you lay there Both of us saw the end And I wasn't dead No, I still had life."

Albums of the Week! The top spot goes to Hoaxed - Two Shadows (2022). This album was included among my recent contest winnings from The Metalhead Box, and I’d never heard of the band. Turns out it’s awesome. The ultra-clean and melodic female vocals accompany a grooving, heavy rhythm section, and the songs are quite memorable. I love discovering new music like this! ⚔️ Necropanther’s excellent new release stays on for another week, as does Ettinskjalf’s. Haunt is releasing a new greatest hits compilation called “Chariot, Vol. 1,” which includes remixed and remastered versions of their finest work. Do you like Power Trip? Give Integrity’s album a try and I think you’ll like what you hear. ☠️ 1. Hoaxed - Two Shadows 2. Ettinskjalf - Between Walls and Delusion (2023) 3. Integrity - Those Who Fear Tomorrow 4. Grand Belial’s Key - Mocking the Philanthropist 5. Necropanther - Betrayal (2023) 6. Haunt - Chariot Vol. 1 (2023) 7. Obituary - Dying of Everything (2023) 8. Khemmis - Absolution 9. Ozzy Osbourne - The Ultimate Sin ☠️ What did you listen to this week?
