The Kirby side-material is a fucking treasure trove of headcanon fuel and the fact that they’re not that well known wounds me because they’re unironically very good. Here’s some of my favorite pieces of info that are canon to at least one of the mangas / novels / extras:

- Meta Knight is a super reckless leadfoot of a driver (Novels)

- Zan can make temporary clones of herself with lightning flashes (Puzzle Planet)

- The Kirby universe has some type of intergalactic criminal justice system and will arrest people (Novels)

- The mages are likely some type of Christian and Zan has crucified someone twice (Manmaru Nikki)

- Haltmann loves puzzles and tries to use them to solve other people’s problems for them (puzzle planet)

- You can reach hell if you dig a deep enough hole (Novels)

- Hyness sleeps with his eyes open (Manmaru Nikki)

- Fatty Puffer is a Xenophobe (novels)

- Meta Knight is a major interstellar celebrity and his mere presence on a tv show causes record breaking watch numbers (novels)

- The waddle dees are all clones of Bandee (novels)

-Gooey likes to chill in Kirby’s mouth (dedede de Pupupu)

- Bandee is good at doing makeup (novels)

-Coo is a heart throb and the most eligible bachelor in Dream Land (Dedede de Pupupu)

- Meta knight has fangs! (4koma Gag battle)

- Depending on what you’re reading, Bandee’s bandana is either a gift from Kirby (novels) or Meta Knight (pupupu hero)

- Kirby can only use super abilities for a limited time because theyre stressful and possibly corrupting on Kirby’s body (novels)

- Queen Ripple adopts the three dark matter from the 64 opening cutscene and has them hang out with her and help with chores (4koma Gag battle)

- The copy ability weapons are the physical manifestations of the helpers they came from! If you break a Beam Wand you break the waddle doo (4koma)

- Meta knight is a weeb for Halcandra, whose society spread out their knowledge and culture by wandering around the Galaxy and sharing stories (novels)

- Baby sphere doomers and a halcandran artifact black market exist (novels)

-Galacta Knight is canonically extremely beautiful and got an incredibly historically inaccurate film made about him that had a forced romance in it. (Novels)

How would the trio be like at Disneyland and which landmark each one would most like to visit (if they had money to travel overseas) :3

- At Disneyland, Jeremy and Jab would get lost and Aleksey would have to go on an epic quest to find them where he has to ask The Evil Queen and Donald Duck if they’ve seen a freakishly tall guy with a pink mohawk along with a guy with purple hair and red horns.

Jab would almost get refused entry for "being in a costume" and he'd have to explain it's just what he looks like. 😭

Jab and Jeremy would peer pressure Aleksey into going with them on the wildest rides until at some point he throws up his lunch and they both start apologizing and promise him that he can choose what they do for the rest of the day (a mistake).

Jeremy takes pictures of everything + 32897678 selfies to send to his mom and cousins.

Jab buys them all a pair of Minnie Mouse ears and Jeremy refuse to take his off for the rest of the day. They all look adorable. 😌

Basically Jeremy and Jab = SpongeBob and Patrick and Aleksey = Squidward

- Ehe, that got long... for landmarks: Jab's special interest is Kirby and he would wanna go to Japan to visit the Kirby Pupupu Market and the Kirby Café (yes, these are landmarks how dare you question it). Along with other things of course but Kirby is his priority.

Jeremy would either wanna go somewhere really hot where he can do nothing in the sun all day or try snowboarding because he thinks it looks really cool.

Aleksey would wanna travel through Europe by train. Explore all the big cities, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, as well as the smaller, hidden places.

I've read that Kirby's gender is ambiguous in Japanese. Is this true?

Short answer: Yes

Longer answer: Yes, but there are some misconceptions about it.

Mostly notably I see a lot of English-speaking fans claim that only gender neutral pronouns are used for Kirby in Japanese. This is both untrue and betrays a lack of knowledge about how this language works.

There are actually instances of Kirby being referred to with かれ/kare, which basically translates to “he/him”:

I think it’s important to point this out, because people arguing in bad faith might see this as “proof” that he’s not gender neutral, when in fact someone can be both gender neutral and use masculine pronouns at the same time.

Adding to that, Kirby’s overall speaking style (he speaks in early manuals and the current novel series) leans towards masculine as well.

You’ll also find that some manga adaptations do seem to just portray him as male.

So while his gender is officially ambiguous, the idea of portraying him as masculine-leaning isn’t something invented by the English localization like some claim.

Another claim I often hear is that he was deliberately made gender neutral so he’d have an universal appeal, but I’ve never seen a source for that anywhere.

However, Kirby’s gender being ambiguous/neutral is still very much an official fact about him.

I’m not gonna list every single mention of this, but one notable source is the 20th Anniversary Kirby of the Stars Pupupu Taizen, where Kirby’s profile on page 15 lists his gender as “Unknown”:

On the official Kirby twitter account you will also occasionally see things that allude to this.

Like Kirby being portrayed as participating in making sweets on Valentine’s Day, which is typically considered an activity only for girls, while characters who are considered male are specifically not joining in:

In turn, Kirby was also portrayed as joining during White Day, which is considered the “boy equivalent” of this:

And less notable perhaps, but Kirby merchandise has no qualms whatsoever about using Kirby for marketing products that are more traditionally feminine either:

I know this is a more minor example, but it shows that HAL is chill about Kirby being portrayed in both feminine-leaning and masculine-leaning ways.

But yeah, bottom line: Kirby’s gender is officially ambiguous/neutral. And while instances of masculine language being used for him exist in Japanese as well, this isn’t mutually exclusive to his gender being ambiguous/neutral.

(Sakurai also is said to have talked a bit more about Kirby’s gender being neutral during one of the Kirby 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concerts, but since I only have second-hand reports of them, I can’t know for certain what he said.

However, several independent reports seem to match on this topic, so it seems he really did talk about it.)
