I WATCHED A FEW CLIPS BACK IN 2020 WHEN HAIKYŪ!! WAS SUPER POPULAR, AND I ALSO HAD A CRUSH ON OIKAWA'S STAGE ACTOR, ASUMA KOUSUKE. I ACTUALLY MENTIONED HIM ON MY STORY ONCE AND HE REPLIED!!!

I want to carry them in a handbag like a tiny dog: I feel like prior to his defection Ichimaru hung out with Komamura a lot, just to unnerve Komamura about the possibility that someone might know what was under the helmet. (You know, as a fellow canid-esque person, what with the fox imagery.) Komamura did not particularly enjoy this, because Ichimaru’s loyalties are difficult to ascertain—and, well, Ichimaru was there to purposefully be a pain. But since Komamura and Tousen made a point of spending time together, and Ichimaru was often also around, when Komamura would see Tousen and Ichimaru spending time together he would think little of it--that perhaps Tousen was running interference so Komamura wouldn’t have to deal with Ichimaru today. Tousen was and wasn’t.

Nothing I like about them is technically canon: During my original run with Bleach, Ichimaru was one of my sister’s favorite characters, and despite the fact that in the last 15 years my sister has not thought about Bleach for more than the 12 seconds it took her to be utterly appalled at our love for the Bleach Rock Musicals, I will probably always carry a certain fondness for Ichimaru because of her fondness for him. Her fondness for him that one time in high school. I’m like the grandpa who hears you say you like watermelon and then mails you 50 of them.

Speaking of the Bleach Rock Musicals, the OG BRM cast will always have my heart, but in the 2016 edition of Bleach Rock Musical, Ichimaru is played by the same actor who plays Oikawa in the Haikyuu! stage plays, and I love Oikawa and I love Asuma Kousuke and by extension I love Ichimaru (even though we determined that Asuma basically just parroted what OG BRM Ichimaru did with the role, so he was fine in it but not a standout. 2016 Byakuya, on the other hand—).

They work better as part of a dynamic: Left to my own devices, I think about Ichimaru pretty much exclusively in relation to Matsumoto/Kira/Hinamori/Hitsugaya, where I enjoy him very much as a harbinger of doom and particular kinds of pain that are so precise, so exquisite, it makes the effects that much harder to ever excise or forget. Anyone can cause a wound—even a lasting one. It takes an artist to create a wound that the wounded holds tight, like pain, like love, like it came from inside of you and not from without. Like you cannot now ever go without.

Some treddies I enjoy thinking about when they come up on my dash or in canon:

Ichimaru and Zaraki and Byakuya: Courtesy of That One Page That One Time in the Soul Society Arc, and also Ukitake discussing Byakuya and Ichimaru as peers. I’m just utterly fascinated by the Soul Society grapevine regularly associating the two by virtue of their age/skill as shinigami. I’m sure the tabloid-readers in the Kuchiki household were thrilled.

If they were real I’d be afraid of them: Look, Rukia is scared of him and honestly that’s all I need to know in order for me to be scared of him too. I think she has pretty good instincts when it comes to who to trust since she grew up on the streets, and I trust her a lot more than me. Whether he’s a snake or a fox, both of those animals are known for being cunning and tricky, and I’m not smart enough not to fall into a trap. (<— wait LOL I wrote my answer completely independently of my co-blogger and apparently we said the exact same thing)

Wow they are a horrible person: Whether you excuse his actions or not, I don’t think you can say he didn’t do some pretty terrible things. He deeply hurt a lot of people (including himself) in his quest for vengeance/revenge, and honestly I think one of the worst things he did was die. It might’ve provided him with closure, but for those he left behind, they had a lot of unresolved questions and feelings.

I don’t really have much to say about them: Sort of similar to my feelings about Hitsugaya, I don’t have much to say about Ichimaru. But this is because I find such joy and satisfaction in other people’s depictions of him, that I don’t find myself wanting anything else. Ditto to whipplefilter’s shoutouts above, because I’m happy to discuss and digest Ichimaru content all day!

In a classic bout of pumpkinposting (i.e. post-12AM posting), I just want to go on record as saying that the 2016 Bleach Rock Musical had Asuma Kousuke as Ichimaru and Nagata Takato as Hitsugaya, which means BRM was fully capable of choreographing an excellent fight between the two of them and simply did not. They definitely could have done it!! Nagata can do ballroom around-the-worlds!!

Just imagine. Hinamori vs. Hitsugaya and then Hitsugaya vs. Ichimaru, except it’s styled after a ballroom dance competition.

This isn’t just robbery it’s GRAND LARCENY.
