People tend to blame and hate Kousuke for the bitter and violent person he is, but let’s not forget who’s at fault here. Rand and Yui.

Rand, from the flashbacks, gave little attention to Kousuke. When he was eating sweets at diner and tried to put his foot in, he quickly gave up.   At Kousuke’s graduation, he was trying to hurry it up, have a picture taken, and get it over it. The fuck ? Your 14 yo son graduated with HONORS . I can imagine this sort of things went on and on for 24 years. No wonder why Kou thinks he’s never enough. Rand did try recently to give him some attention, when he tried conversation after the party’s mess. And the recent phone call. But that’s little too late after 24 years of neglect. No wonder why Kousuke didn’t believe a word of that call/ did not register.  The Ivan the terrible reference underlines this. What happened to Ivan’s kid is his fault, he’s the one in cause of his death. All Rand’s terrible parenting decisions (rather lack of) caused Nolan’s injury. All because he’s colder than the snow Nolan is currently bleeding on.

As for Yui. Yui is a witch.

No, just kidding, but she did manipulate Kousuke into becoming this. Basically raising him with the idea that work and your status determine your value as a person (I guess that’s why he thinks it’s better being a bore than a failure).  We don’t know why yet.

My personal guess is that she is trying for him  to be the heir she couldn’t be. Why ? Maybe she doesn’t have the qualities required. Maybe it’s misogyny (Asia is not particularly Girl power-smash the glass ceiling, I guess). Maybe the upper people know what she’s like an knew it would be business suicide.

I think deep down, Kousuke knows that. From the new ep, I think he envies Nolan’s joy of life and ability to make friends. He thinks no one likes him other than because of his money, but he quickly forgets Shin ae, who got him a cake for his bday or went out of her way so his mom doesn’t fire him because of her. Also Hansuke. And Yu Jin. Dude, for an intelligent man, has a lot of amnesia. But it must tie to his bad experience in college.
