Natalie Interview with DREAMCATCHER

DREAMCATCHER will release their 3rd single “Endless Night” on March 11th.

Last September they released their 1st album “The Beginning Of The End” which concluded their “Nightmare Story” concept that they had been showing off up until this point. Their new track “Endless Night” will start their 2nd story and was worked on by guitarist Kuboty (ex. TOTALFAT). The song still showcases their intense rock sound.

Contact with hard rock

DREAMCATCHER’s music has very strong hard rock and heavy metal elements. Do you guys listen to this kind of music in your day-to-day lives?

Siyeon: I love that hard band sound. I think ONE OK ROCK is the best in particular. When they held a concert in Korea I bought a ticket and went to see them by myself. They really make you scream “WAAAAA!” and wave your arms in the air. Thanks to them I sweat a lot too (laugh). ONE OK ROCK is really popular in Korea too. Because they have an intense sound.

JiU: Since the beginning, I’ve always liked the mood that acoustic songs give off, but since joining DREAMCATCHER I’ve wanted to experience more intense rock. So I started by watching videos of BABYMETAL and I’ll never forget how surprised I was. I was shocked, they were so…fresh. I thought it’d be great to be cool like them.

Dami: I didn’t really specialize much in metal, but I’ve probably listened to a lot of rock bands. Even though you can say ‘rock’ in a word, aren’t there also ballad and hip-hop elements that can make more intense rock? So I can easily listen to those things.

Yoohyeon: I don’t really listen to much rock or metal. However, I do listen to WaT a lot. I like Koike Teppei. But WaT has a nice tight band sound, so they’re easy to listen to.

Gahyeon: Well, I suppose I like Day6. They’re a group with a band style that’s unique in K-POP.

SuA: Day6 has gotten popular among the youth in Korea.

Are the youth in Korea listening to rock in the first place? Because there are a lot of R&B and EDM elements in K-POP.

Siyeon: I think there are a lot of people that listen to it. Anime has gotten really big there. “NARUTO” and other anime songs and soundtracks are mostly rock. Personally, when I listen to anime songs I feel a little nostalgic.

Having a concert with a band someday

In Japan “hard rock & heavy metal” is a genre that has a pretty consistent fan base. Some of them have probably never listened to K-POP. How do you want to show the appeal of DREAMCATCHER to those people?

JiU: For people that don’t know us, I’d like for them to listen to “PIRI” first. That’s because “PIRI” is addictive and the hook gets stuck in your head. Even when we perform it abroad, everyone simultaneously starts singing it loudly. So I think “PIRI” is the best introduction to DREAMCATCHER because it really brings a sense of unity.

SuA: I recommend “Mayday”! We made a special video clip for this song. We recruited people who had experience in a band and they performed together with the members. The live session in the studio was completely different than how it usually is and the intensity was amazing! You should be able to see us scream-singing in the video.

Normally DREAMCATCHER doesn’t perform with a band?

SuA: We performed with a band set at a rock festival once. Aside from that, there’s not many other times. If I could have a wish granted, I would like to have a band style solo concert.

Gahyeon: Yeah, that’s a really big goal of ours.

Memories from tour abroad

DREAMCATCHER had a world tour and went to places like Europe and America. Did anything unexpected happen while you were traveling through different countries?

JiU: During the first day of our second European tour in London, I got really impatient because I couldn’t hear my voice in my in-ear monitor. When you’re on stage and you can’t hear your voice, it makes it very difficult to sing. Unfortunately, we had to delay the show by an hour even though our fans were waiting outside in the cold rain… Dami: And even after we started the show, the condition of the monitor was still bad.

JiU: I was really anxious about it at the time, but somehow with willpower I got over it.

SuA: When I look back, getting through those troubles brought the members closer together and gave me the confidence to fight through problems.

Siyeon: Something really touching happened during our recent American tour. We have a ballad called “Polaris”. When we sang that song our fans put star shaped stickers over their cellphone lights and shined them at us. It was a romantic scene, because the meaning of our song is the North Star. I REALLY thought I was going to start crying.

Moved by fans

Yoohyeon: Also, one of the most regretful things is that our member Handong wasn’t able to participate in the European or American tours. So our fans brought life-sized cutouts of Handong to the venues.

Dami: I was really surprised by that. Our fans’ feelings are amazing. So we brought the life-sized Handong cutouts up on stage.

Which country did that?

Gahyeon: Several countries. That’s because fans from different countries prepared their own life-sized cutouts. So each place had a different Handong. The sizes were different as well. I was touched that they did this by hand…

SuA: Also, the characteristics of fans varied from country to country as well. There were a lot of female fans in Europe. In Helsinki, Finland the ratio of female to male was like 8:2. In Korea the ratio is closer to 5:5.

JiU: I think it’s about 5:5 in Japan too.

What kind of characteristics do Japanese fans have?

JiU: They’re SO polite. For example, in other countries when we have a hi-touch event the fans are like “Yaaay!” smiling brightly and then abruptly try to hi-touch. In Japan, our fans bow first and then will hi-touch. We have mutual respect with our fans and I think that’s ideal.

Yoohyeon: When a show starts and we start singing on stage, they look at us very seriously. I wonder if that’s a unique trait to Japanese fans.

Siyeon: Surely. Their reactions are also really great. Like they’re moved by what we say on stage.

DREAMCATCHER’s “real sound”

You will be releasing your new single “Endless Night” on March 11th.

Siyeon: This is our first work since the release of our album “The Beginning Of The End” last year. It closed out our “Nightmare” story concept. In short, this single is the beginning of a new story. The specific concept of this story is still a secret, so I’ll leave it up to your imaginations. Please look forward to it.

Kuboty, former TOTALFAT member, offered the title track “Endless Night” to you all. Is this your first time having a Japanese composer?

Siyeon: No, we also have “My way ~Kono Michi no Saki e~” (from our album). So we’ve worked with Japanese people before.

Yoohyeon: But, this will be our first time for a single.

JiU: When I first heard the song, I was like “This is intense”. Our sound has been heavy and hard from the beginning, but this seemed to go even further.

Dami: Yeah, that’s true. It gives a feeling of DREAMCATCHER’s “real sound”.

The best as usual

I think a main point is that the lyrics are in Japanese. In a previous interview with you guys you stated, “We’re still shaky at Japanese pronunciation, so kindly watch over us”, do you think you have grown since then?

Gahyeon: Mochiron (of course)! Isn’t it obvious?!

Siyeon: We’re studying Japanese and thanks to work we’ve been given more chances to use it. When we come to events in Japan we’re able to speak more with our fans.

SuA: All of the members should have gotten better since before. I want to show how much we’ve grown.

Speaking of which, what is the latest Japanese that you’ve memorized?

JiU: “Doushite” (why?). “Doushite ~kimi wo suki ni natte shimattan darou?” (Why did I fall in love with you) is a phrase in Tohoshinki (DBSK)’s song. It won’t get out of my head. The meaning is great, but I simply just like how it sounds.

Yoohyeon: For me it’s “yareyare……” (omg…). I started watching “The Disastrous Life of Saiki K./ 斉木楠雄のΨ難” on Netflix and the main character says “yareyare…” a lot. It got me completely (laugh).

Siyeon: For me, it’s “ANKEETO” (questionnaire). I took questionnaires from everyone during our fanmeetings. Asked things like, “What is your favorite DREAMCATCHER song?”. So, I memorized the Japanese for questionnaire.

ANKEETO isn’t Japanese by nature, isn’t it French?

Siyeon: Eh! Really!? (laughs) Well, in Korean it is often called seolmunjosa.

SuA: The latest thing I’ve memorized is, “tabemashita ka? (have you eaten?)” For some reason I always get “tabetakatta (I wanted to eat)” and “tabemashita ka? (have you eaten?)” mixed up. I’m always like which is it which is it, I never know…. I’ve been able to use them correctly recently (laugh).

Gahyeon: Since it’s winter right now, I’ve recently learned the word “yuki (snow)”. My birthday is in February, so I love winter and snow.

Dami: While listening to Gahyeon speak just now, I learned the new word “Fuyu (winter)”. I’m proud I could put it to use (laugh).

Indeed (laugh). Please share a message for your fans.

Gahyeon: Our Japanese fans! We can’t wait to see you again. We’ll prepare extra hard to show you guys a great version of ourselves. Aishiteru yooo (I love you)!

JiU: We received SO MUCH power from you guys last time we were in Japan. After that, we were able to return to Korea and work energetically. We’ll continue doing our best, so please look after us!

Thoughts on “Endless Night”

The theme of this song is to fight against and overcome your difficulties. The message is to continue down a path you believe in. This theme also applied to me as I had left a band I had worked with for 15 years in order to continue on my own and restart as a musician. It’s DREAMCATCHER’s song but it overlaps with my own feelings. It ended up being a powerful song in the end.

Things you thought about while working on this song

I thought that a live groove was necessary to bring out more of DREAMCATCHER’s heavy sound and worldview. So we got coldrain’s drummer Katsuma to participate as the band has played on stages throughout the world. With that, I was able to get the sound that I wanted. I am grateful to Katsuma who participated despite his busy schedule.

A Message to the members of DREAMCATCHER

I’m rooting for DREAMCATCHER from the bottom of my heart so that they can have even more activities. I’d like to perform on the same stage as them one day. Keep working hard! -------

On my way to Semarang, I watched the Bonus DVD of Milestone, the newest album of @totalfat_japan 🤩 . It's Kuboty's Final Shred Concert. Even though I had watch that concert before on the day Kuboty left (22/10/2019), his energy still flew right thru. Couldn't hold the tears at some songs because they reminded me of Kuboty's soul in the band and the fact that he's no longer in Totalfat 😢 . But now, Totalfat is walking fresh as trio. They still here, still go on strong. So happy with their new album Milestone. And will look forward to their another upcoming albums in the future. クライマックス同然の大バカ騒ぎ！TOTALFAT

残り3バンドとなったMARS STAGEには、会場一体を埋め尽くすほどの人が集まっていた。それもそのはず、TREASURE05Xには欠かせないバンドのTOTALFATが登場するからだ。しかも10月に脱退を発表しているKuboty(Gt.)がプレイする最後のTREASURE05Xとあって、このライブへ対する期待値の高さがフィールドから伝わってくる。SEが流れるとメンバーがドラムの前に集まり、円陣を組んで気合いを入れる。それはTOTALFATのこの日のライブへ懸ける思いの現れだろう。

「ただいま蒲郡、今日はやっちまおうぜ！とことん付き合ってくれよろしく」とJose(Vo.Gt.)が開口一番に言うと、続けざまにShun(Vo.Ba.)が「よっしゃ、はじめようぜトレジャー！俺らが作る景色の方が台風のクソ野郎よりもヤバいってことを見せつけてやろう」と観客に伝えて、爆発力のあるナンバー「Broken Bones」でライブの口火をきる。続く「Place to Try」のイントロが鳴り響くだけでフィールドからは大きな歓声があがり、クライマックスかと思うほどの盛り上がりをみせる。さらに大サビでは大合唱が起きたり、観客同士がとびっきりの笑顔で肩を組��合ってジャンプするなど、ピースフルな景色が生まれていた。

「半端ないです。何が半端ないってお前らがすごいんだよ。だからこの瞬間何をするか、トレジャーが終わったあとにどんな顔で帰るか。それだけを追い求めていこう。この四人でトレジャーのステージに立つのは今日が最後です。もうすぐKubotyも俺たちもそれぞれ新しい世界に飛び込んでいくけど、TOTALFATとしてまたここで会うことを約束して最後の1曲を歌います。またトレジャーで再会するってことはお前らもここに来るってことだからな」とShunがありったけの思いを込めたMCをすると「Good Fight & Promise You」へ。この曲ではバンドと観客の思いがぶつかりあう壮絶な盛り上がりをみせていたが、それはTREASURE05Xのステージで築いてきた観客との絆があるから生まれたのだろう。近い将来、新しい形となったTOTALFATがTREASURE05Xでどんなライブをしてくれるのか楽しみだ。

ベストマッチを挙げるとすれば、準決勝「巌窟王」vs「SWERVES」でしょうか。1-1で迎えた残り3分30秒「巌窟王」森山直太朗選手のゴールで2-1としたものの、「SWERVES」ゆうや(シド)選手のゴールで2-2に。PK戦までもつれた死闘を制したのは初の決勝進出への想いが強かった「巌窟王」でした。アンセムが流れる決勝戦のみの特別な選手入場は、全選手の憧れ。直太朗選手も「やっと憧れのアンセム入場！」と。。

「SWERVES」といえば、予選リーグ初戦の「FC はとぽっぽ」戦での常田真太郎選手の開始3秒でのゴールはお見事！

初参戦で蹴リーグの決勝まで勝ち上がった「FC はとぽっぽ」。ほぼバンドマンのみで構成されたチームは一体感が凄い！蹴リーグ準決勝での「FC SMA」戦、残り1秒でのHIROKI(ユビキタス)選手の同点ゴールは劇的でした！監督のKuboty(TOTALFAT)を筆頭に音蹴杯を全力で楽しむ！という姿勢が素晴らしく、エンターテイニングチーム賞にも輝きました。

毎大会、波乱を起こすTAKE/KEIGO(FLOW) ・岡野昭仁(ポルノグラフィティ) 要する「チーム・アミューズ!!」。今大会はOCL進出ならずでしたが、得点係・ボールボーイズ＆ガールズ、満場一致で平岡祐太選手がベストスマイル賞に輝きました！

Naishou: Session Three

A fight in the darkness of night with an old acquaintance (shall we say) reignites the trail. But is it a little too convenient? Are the cultists leading those “foolish samurai” into a trap? Will Naishou Province fall under a reign of blood? Read on to find out.

Warning: Long Post Ahead!

A Bloody Mess

The fight with Shiba Toshio was indeed a struggle. Thanks to a few helpful Jade Strikes from Isawa Suzuha, the party realised what exactly they were fighting - the undead! Shiba Toshio’s corpses had been animated, the bodyguard swiping at the allies of his charge. Realising the animated corpse could only be felled by beheading, the party was victorious. Their keen eyes also spotted a rather heavy set of footprints going in the direction of Koujou Village.

They followed the tracks further to the village’s watermill and encountered one of the village’s samurai, Miya Kobouti on watch. After a barrage of questions from the young samurai, they took up his offer of patrolling a section of the village in exchange for not being reported. He also warned them not to take anything his father and brother said about him too seriously. While the rest patrolled, Ide Nobune slowly crept in, finding only rats, flour and grain.

However, after a bit of poking around, they found that the grain still inside the mill’s mechanisms was in fact bonemeal and a loose floorboard reveal a den covered in blood and gore in the foundations. But, there was no Bloodspeaker cultists in the den. So, Ide Nobune reported her findings and the party agreed to scout the village some more during the day, and try to alert Miya Kuboti to the nerfarious activities happening inside his village.

Of course, they didn’t account for Miya-san’s stonewalling. He insisted on waiting until the evening to check out the mill as he had… other activities to attend to. The ever persistant Akodo Miyamoto insisted on following Miya-san around, leading to Miyamoto finding out about that Miya Kuboti was having an affair with a peasant girl in a flowery kimono, Yuri. With the threat of blackmail, Miya-san finally agreed to check out the mill with the party in the evening.

With time to kill, one half of the party talked with Miya Kinshin, the father of Kuboti and soon found that he was senile. They were quickly forming the same opinion of Chio, the old lady who ran the mill. The other went to Boubi Village to try and get some help in the form of sword-wielding ronin. Maeda, their leader, agreed in exchange for a writ guaranteeing an audience with the province’s governor, Miya Ansho. With the riding expertise of Utaku Ayumi (and the speed of her warhorse), a writ was produced by a very angry Ansho-san.

Evening approached and with almost a platoon available, Akodo Miyamoto drew up battle plans. Sure enough, they surrounded the watermill and a bloody battle ensued as samurai, ronin and blood cultists unleashed their full might against each other. Spells both maho and normal flew through the air at their targets but unfortunately, Isawa Suzuha was rendered unconcious by the kami’s blacklash at her demands. Things looked dire as a vortex of blood appeared in the centre of the mill, however once the hooded leader of the cultists fell it was clear that the samurai and ronin had won the day. However, Yuri was nowhere to be seen.

Amongst the wreckage, the party found a black, obsidian amulet with the Yogo mon on one side, and the Hantei mon on the other. Taking it for further study, the party headed back to Naishou City to report their success and watch the meeting between the governor and the ronin. During the meeting the party found out that Maeda used to be part of the Crane and the amount of prejudice ronin face. Akodo Miyamoto was particularly upset at Maeda’s offer of service being snubbed but could only get him the leadership of Boubi Village - Maeda would have to win his honour back another day.

Ide Nobune visited Kuzuhime once more for some work, and got a job simply putting some jade in a chest of drawers in the smugglers’ cove near the city. She found some strange markings in that chest of drawers including that of a mountain. Akodo Miyamoto chatted with Isawa Suzuha about the ownership of the obsidian amulet, concluding that the Phoenix would look after it as she knew more about magic. Utaku Ayami furthered her plans to dispose of Ikoma Shikei once more, by planting the fan she had won from the Topaz Championship on his person and yelling to the guards about it. Shikei-san objected to the accusation and challenged the Unicorn to a duel. After a grueling exchange of blades, Utaku Ayumi emerged the victor.

The Takeaway

Well, a lot happened, that’s for sure and I overestimated the power of the blood cultists - hurting themselves for a minor hit with no advantage aspects created is a bad idea in FATE Core. As always, I have to not be afraid to hurt the player characters badly and compel as often as I can.

Raising the 2nd Curtain with Dreamcatcher’s 3rd Single “Endless Night”

Dreamcatcher will release their 3rd Japanese single “Endless Night” on March 11th (Wednesday).

This single takes place after the conclusion of their nightmare story which ended during their last album “The Beginning Of The End”. The track was composed and arranged by guitarist Kuboty. The start of this 2nd chapter also shows Dreamcatcher’s feeling and passion. This original Japanese track features an even more intense rock sound and catchy chorus. ■ Kuboty Comment: The theme of this song’s composition is to fight and win against difficulties. It’s about continuing on and not losing yourself by believing in the path you’re following. This message resonates with me because I was in a band for 15 years and left to have a new start and pursue my dreams as a musician on my own. This is DREAMCATCHER’s new song, but it also overlaps with my own feelings and that’s how it came out being such a powerful track. Also my good friend is coldrain’s drummer Katsuma and thanks to him we were able to really bring out the sound and groove. I would be happy if a lot of people listen to this song.

드림캐쳐가 3월 11일 세번째 일본 싱글 'Endless Night'을 발매한다.

작년 9월 발매된 첫 앨범 'The Beginning of the End'로 지금까지 내세워온 '악몽 스토리' 콘셉트를 완결지은 그녀들. 활동의 제 2장을 여는 'Endless Night'는 기타리스트 Kuboty (TOTALFLAT 출신)가 작곡한 곡으로, 드림캐쳐가 지금까지 따라온 음악성에 맞춰 격한 록 사운드가 특징적이다.

음악나탈리는 아쉽게도 활동에서 빠진 한동을 제외한 나머지 멤버 6명과 락 음악과의 접점, 유럽 및 미국 투어의 추억, 이번 신곡 등에 대해 대화를 나누었다. 특집기사 후반에는 Kuboty의 코멘트도 실려 있다.

하드 락과의 접점

──드림캐쳐의 음악은 하드 락이나 헤비메탈적 요소가 굉장히 강하죠. 여러분은 평소에도 그런 음악을 들으시나요?

시연　하드한 밴드 사운드를 정말 좋아해요. 특히 ONE OK ROCK은 최고죠. 한국에 콘서트 오셨을 때 저 혼자 티켓 사서 보러 갔어요. '오-!' 하는 느낌으로 팔을 쳐들고, 분위기가 너무 뜨거워서 그 덕분에 땀도 엄청 났었어요. (웃음) ONE OK ROCK은 한국에서도 되게 인기가 좋아요. 사운드가 강렬하니까요.

지유: 저는 원래 어쿠스틱한 분위기의 곡을 좋아했었는데, 드림캐쳐에 들어와서 격한 락 음악을 접하게 된 �� 같아요. 그 과정에서 처음 BABYMETAL 분들의 영상을 봤을 때의 충격이 잊혀지지 않아요. 신선하다...기보다는, 일종의 쇼크를 받았어요. 그 정도로 멋있으셨어요.

다미: 저는 메탈에 특화되어 있다거나 한 건 아니지만 여러가지로 락 계통의 밴드를 자주 듣는 것 같아요. '락'이라고 해도 발라드도 있고, 힙합 요소가 강한 록도 있잖아요. 그런 곡들에서 자연스럽게 영향을 받게 되는 것 같아요.

유현: 저는 하드 락이나 메탈을 그렇게 자주 듣지는 않아요. 오히려 평소에는 WaT를 자주 들어요. 고이케 뎃페이 씨를 좋아해요. 그래도 WaT는 꽤 타이트한 밴드 사운드를 들려주시니까 자연스럽게 영향을 받고 있을지도 모르겠네요.

가현: 그러면 제가 좋아하는 쪽은 Day6려나요. K-Pop에선 보기 드문 밴드 스타일의 그룹이에요.

수아: Day6는 한국에서 젊은 사람들 사이에서 주목을 받고 있어요.

DREAMCATCHER

──한국의 젊은 층이 락을 듣기는 하나요? K-Pop은 R&B나 EDM 요소가 강한 편인데요.

시연: 들으시는 분도 많다고 생각해요. 일본 애니메이션이 되게 큰 역할을 했어요. 나루토 같은 일본 애니메이션의 오프닝곡이나 OST는 거의 락 계통이잖아요. 개인적으로는 애니메이션 곡을 들으면 왠지 반가운 느낌이 들어요.

언젠가는 밴드 편성으로 라이브를

──일본에서 하드락이나 헤비메탈은 일정한 팬층을 항상 가지고 있는 장르예요. 이런 분들 중에선 K-Pop을 들어본 적이 없다는 분도 계실 텐데요, 이런 분들에게 드림캐쳐의 매력을 어떻게 어필하고 싶으신가요?

지유: 저희를 모르시는 분들은 우선 'PIRI'라는 곡을 들으셨으면 해요. 왜냐하면 'PIRI'는 중독성이 강하고, 후크 부분이 귀에 계속 울리는 곡이거든요. 해외에서 공연할 때에도 다 같이 떼창해주실 정도로요. 다른 어떤 곡에도 없는 일체감을 맛보실 수 있어서 드림캐쳐 입문곡으로서는 'PIRI가 최적인 것 같아요.

수아: 제 추천은 'Mayday'요! 스페셜 클립으로 영상도 만들었는데, 팬분들 중에서 밴드 경험이 있으신 분들을 모집해서 실제 밴드랑 합주를 했어요. 스튜디오에서 라이브 세션이랑 함께하는 건 현장감이 평소랑 완전히 다르더라고요. 엄청난 박력이었어요! 거의 소리치듯 노래하는 저희 모습은 영상에서 확인하실 수 있어요.

수아

──드림캐쳐는 평소에 밴드와 함께 공연하지는 않나요?

수아: 락 페스티벌에서 밴드 세팅으로 공연한 적은 있는데요, 횟수가 지금까지 많지는 않아요. 소원이 이뤄진다면 밴드 스타일로 단독 콘서트를 해보고 싶어요.

가현: 음, 큰 목표네요.

해외 투어의 추억

──유럽이나 미국에서도 투어를 개최할 정도로 세계적인 활약을 보여주고 있는 드림캐쳐인데요, 다양한 국가를 다니면서 예상과 달랐던 부분이 있나요?

지유: 두번째 유럽투어 공연 첫날에 인이어로 제 목소리가 안 들어와서 걱정했었어요. 무대 위에서 자기 목소리를 못 들으면 바로 노래하기가 어려워지거든요. 할 수 없이 공연 시간을 한시간 늦췄는데요, 찬 비가 내리는 날이었는데 팬분들이 밖에서 기다리셨어요...

다미: 게다가 본 공연 들어갔을 때에도 인이어 상태가 그대로 안 좋았어요.

지유: 그 때는 정말 불안했는데, 근성만으로 어떻게든 이겨냈어요.

수아: 지금 생각하면 그 문제를 이겨내면서 멤버들 간의 결속도 강해지고, 원정 나가서도 싸워낼 수 있다는 자신감으로 연결된 것 같아요.

시연: 저는 지난번 미국 투어 중에 감동한 일이 있었어요. 저희 노래 중에 '북극성(Polaris)'라는 발라드 곡이 있는데요, 팬분들이 핸드폰 라이트 부분에 별 모양 스티커를 붙이고 불을 켜주셨어요. 북극성이라는 곡 제목 그대로 로맨틱한 광경이었어요.정말 거의 울 뻔했어요.

팬분들의 마음에 감동해

유현: 또, 이건 정말 아쉬웠는데요, 이번 유럽 투어랑 미국 투어에는 멤버 한동이 빠졌어요. 그래서 팬분들이 한동 등신대를 공연장에 가지고 와주셨어요.

다미

다미: 깜짝 놀랐어요. 팬분들의 마음씀씀이가 정말 대단하구나, 하고요. 그 등신대를 무대 위에 올려주셨어요.

──그건 어느 나라에서 있었던 일인가요?

가현: 여러 나라에서요. 각국의 팬분들이 각자 등신대를 따로 준비해주셨거든요. 그래서 장소마다 사용한 동언니 사진도 다르고 크기도 미묘하게 달랐어요. 손수 만들었다는 그 느낌이 감동이었죠...

수아: 팬분들 특징도 나라마다 달라요. 유럽에선 여성 팬분들이 많아요. 핀란드 헬싱키에서는 8 대 2 정도 비율로 여성 분들이 더 많았어요. 한국이라면 보통 5 대 5 정도인데 말예요.

지유: 일본도 5 대 5 정도 되는 비율이에요.

──일본 팬분들에게는 어떤 특징이 있나요?

지유

지유: 되게 예의바르세요. 하이터치회를 하면 다른 나라 같으면 '예-이!' 하고 웃으면서 바로 손을 맞추시는데요, 일본 분들은 우선 고개 숙여 인사부터 하시고 손을 맞추려고 하세요. 저희와 팬분들 사이에 서로 존중해주는 관계가 형성되어 있어서, 되게 이상적이라고 생각하고 있어요.

유현: 공연이 시작되면 무대 위에서 노래하는 저희의 모습을 정말 진지한 얼굴으로 지켜봐주세요. 그것도 일본 팬분들의 특징인 것 같아요.

시연: 그렇죠. 또, 리액션이 너무 좋으세요. 저희가 무대 위에서 한 말에 감동을 받으신다거나요.

드림캐쳐의 '리얼사운드'

──3월 11일에는 새 일본 싱글 'Endless Night'가 발매되죠.

시연: 이번 싱글의 전작은 작년에 나온 앨범 'The Beginning Of The End, 인데요, 실은 저희 콘셉트인 '악몽' 스토리를 한차례 마무리짓는 앨범이었어요. 그러니까 이번 싱글은 새로운 이야기의 시작인 거죠. 구체적인 콘셉트는 아직 비밀이니까 상상에 맡길게요. 그래도 꼭 기대해주세요.

──이번 싱글의 타이틀곡「Endless Night」은 TOTALFLAT 출신 Kuboty 씨가 작곡해주신 곡이죠. 일본인 작곡가와 작업하는 건 이번이 처음인가요?

시연

시연: 아뇨, 'My way-이 길의 끝으로-' ('The Beginning Of The End' 수록곡, Okano Riho작사、Keisuke Kurose［KEYTONE］작곡)라는 곡이 있는데, 그 곡도 일본인 분과 작업을 한 곡이에요.

유현: 그래도 싱글으로는 처음이네요.

지유: 처음 곡을 들었을 때 "일단 격하네" 싶었어요. 원래 저희가 헤비하고 하드한 사운드가 특징이지만, 거기에서 더 파고들어갔다는 느낌을 받았어요.

다미: 음, 그렇죠. 드림캐쳐의 '리얼사운드'라는 느낌이었어요.

앞으로도 변하지 않고 최선을

──일본어 가사도 포인트라고 생각해요. 지난번 인터뷰 때에 (참조: 드림캐쳐 ‘What -Japanese Ver.-’ 인터뷰) “아직 일본어 발음이 불안한데, 따뜻하게 지켜봐주셨으면 해요”라고 말씀하셨어요. 그런 부분에서 전보다 성장이 있었나요?

가현: (일본어로) 물론이죠! 당연한 거 아닌가요?　(もちろん！当たり前じゃないですかー！)

시연: 일본어 공부는 하고 있는데, 일하는 동안에 사용할 기회가 엄청 늘었어요. 내일할 때 이벤트에서라도 팬분들이랑 이야기를 할 일도 많았고요.

수아: 멤버들 모두 전보다는 확실히 실력이 늘었을 거예요. 지금은 저희가 성장한 만큼 빨리 보여드리고 싶네요.

──덧붙여서, 최근에는 어떤 일본어 단어를 외우셨나요?

지유: ‘왜’(どうして)요. ‘왜~ 너를 좋아하게 된 걸까? (どうして～君を好きになってしまったんだろう？)’ 하는 부분이 동방신기 선배님의 곡에 있더라고요. 그 부분이 계속 기억에 남아요. 의미도 그렇지만, 간단한 단어에서 나오는 울림이 좋아요.

유현

유현: 저는 ‘야레야레…’요. 요즘 넷플릭스에서 ‘사이키 쿠스오의 재난’이라는 애니를 보기 시작했는데요, 거기서 주인공이 자주 ‘야레야레…’라고 해요. 영향을 되게 크게 받고 있어요. (웃음)

시연: 저는 ‘앙케이트’요. 팬미팅에 오신 분들을 상대로 앙케이트를 했거든요. ‘드림캐쳐 곡 중에서 좋아하는 곡을 골라주세요’라는 질문으로요. 거기에서 앙케이트라는 일본어를 외웠어요.

──앙케이트라는 단어는 원래 일본어가 아니라 프랑스어 아닌가요?

시연: 엣, 그런가요?! (웃음) 덧붙이자면 한국어로는 설문조사라고 부를 떄가 많아요.

수아: 제가 최근에 외운 말은 “드셨어요?(食べましたか?)”예요. 왠지 “먹고 싶었어(食べたかった)”랑 “드셨어요?(食べましたか?)”가 헷갈려서 외워버렸어요. 계속 어느 쪽인지 헷갈려서요…...요즘에는 정확히 쓸 줄 알게 됐어요.(웃음)

가현

가현:　지금 마침 겨울이기도 하고, 저는 최근에 '눈(雪)'이라는단어를 외웠어요. 제 생일이 2월이라서 겨울이나 눈을 되게 좋아해요.

다미: 지금 가현이가 말하는 걸 듣고 '겨울(冬)'이라는 일본어를 외웠어요. 저, 응용력이 자랑이에요. (웃음)

──그렇군요. (웃음) 마지막으로 팬분들께 보내는 메시지 부탁드립니다.

가현: 일본 팬 여러분! 저희, 다시 만날 걸 기대하고 있어요. 그만큼 열심히 준비해서 멋진 모습을 보여드릴테니까요, (일본어로) 사랑해요-!

지유: 전에 일본에 왔을 때, 팬 여러분이 정말 힘을 많이 주셨어요. 그런 응원이 있었기 때문에 한국에 돌아와서도 정력적으로 활동할 수 있었어요. 앞으로도 저희 변치 않고 최선을 다할테니까, 응원 잘 부탁드려요!

이번 곡의 테마는 곤란함에 직면해도 맞서 싸워 이겨내라는, 자신이 믿는 길로 흔들림 없이 나아가라는 메세지입니다. 이는 지난 15년간 몸담았던 밴드에서 탈퇴하고 한명의 음악가로서 재시작하는 제 스스로의 테마이기도 합니다. 드림캐쳐의 곡이지만, 제 뜻을 거듭 담아 힘찬 곡으로 완성할 수 있었습니다.

곡 제작 중에 신경 쓴 부분

지금까지의 곡들 이상으로 드림캐쳐의 헤비한 세계관을 이끌어내기 위해 날것의 그루브가 필요하다는 생각이 들었습니다.

세계 일선의 무대에서 활약하는 coldrain의 드러머 Katsuma군이 참여해준 덕에 제가 생각한 그대로의 사운드에 도달할 수 있었습니다. 바쁜 와중에도 참여해준 Katsuma군에게 정말 감사합니다.

お祭りバカたちの宴　TOTALFAT

ステージ中央に集まってメンバー同士で拳を交わし「東海１の、いや日本１のお祭り会場はココでいいですか！？」とJose(Vo/Gt)が伝えて、激アツのライブをキックオフさせたのは、TREASURE05Xの看板を背負えるバンドの1つであるTOTALFAT！オープニングナンバー「Place to Try」の冒頭ではJoseの歌声に合わせてオーディエンスも大合唱し、初っ端からクライマックスのようなシーンが生まれる。サビでは前方のみならず後方の砂浜までいたる所にサークルが発生し、オーディエンスとバンドの熱量がバチバチにぶつかり合う。

さらにアウトロの〈Forever　君はひとりじゃない〉のパートではmercury stageに詰めかけた大勢の観客が一斉にジャンプを続ける壮観な景色に。トレジャーのファンがいかにTOTALFATのライブを楽しみにしていたか分かる場面の連続に、思わず“すげえ”という声が漏れるほどだ。

続く「Room45」でKuboty(Gt/Cho)が屈伸のような格好でタッピングによる超絶ギターテクをみせつけたかと思えば、「PARTY PARTY」と「夏のトカゲ」のワンフレーズをそれぞれ歌い「どっちで暴れたい？」とオーディエンスに問いかける。その質問に対してオーディエンスが歓声で応えると、「お前らがどっちがいいか分かった！」と言って「PARTY PARTY」を改めてプレイ！大歓声があがるオーディエンスと共に気持ちのこもった演奏をみせ、mercury stageのボルテージをさらにヒートアップさせていく。

5曲目のファストチューン「Revenge of Underdogs」はアメリカのポップパンク・サウンドや、メタルのバックボーンを感じるKubotyのギターソロなど、TOTALFATが影響を受けてきた音楽性を感じられる楽曲だ。リスペクトする音楽への思いを形にしながら、自分たちにしか鳴らせないサウンドを獲得しているのは結成15年を超える月日の賜物だろう。

「これだけ１日中暴れたら明日声はガサガサだろうし、服もスニーカーも汚いままで帰るんだろ。それを俺たちと共有したトレジャーの証として刻んで、また来年ここで会いましょう」とShun(Vo/Ba)が伝え、ラストは約束の歌「Good Fight & Promise You」。曲中の「明日何が起こるかなんて分からないから、だったら今を全力で生きて楽しもうぜ」というTOTALFATらしい熱いメッセージが胸に響く。音楽を体感的に楽しむ喜びを、そして苦しいことがあっても前を向いて生きることの大切さを教えてくれたTOTALFAT。そのライブを終えて上を見上げると、空いっぱいに青空が広がっていた。
