Latin Update 2

I missed last Sunday’s update, but it was not due to lack of work. It turns out the studying has been going faster than expected. I completed Unit 1 in the middle of last week, followed by Unit 2 on Sunday.

That includes:

1st declension nouns All six indicatives, with present system of first conjugation. All four Subjunctives Mostly 1st and 2nd conjugation verbs, with some 3rd conjugation used in perfect system.

As expected, the grammar has been easier than the vocab. I am comfortable at recognizing all tense and noun endings learned so far, but frequently have to look back at the vocab for meanings of the unit 2 verbs. So all that is left to do from unit 2 is memorizing vocab.

Going forward, I will be using less of the Moreland/Fleischer textbook, since I now have the Keller/Russell book too. This one has a separate workbook, which I do not really like, as I prefer to work in my notebook, but perhaps I will get used to it. The benefit of the workbook is that it has several times more exercises than the Intensive Course textbook. So it can be useful for testing myself, as I can go through half the exercises on one day, and then “quiz” myself with sentences from the other half on another day. Also the main benefit of this book seems to be the huge number of readings.

Since I realized I can do more than one unit in a week, the plan right now is (for chapters from K&R):

Week 2 (Sep 1) - Units 1-2 Week 3 (Sep 8) - Units 2-3 Week 4 (Sep 15) - Units 3-4 Week 5 (Sep 22) - Units 4-5 Week 6 (Sep 29) - Units 5-7 (long weekend) Week 7 (Oct 6) - Units 7-9 (midweek break) Week 8 (Oct 13) - “Midterm” Week 9 (Oct 20) - Unit 10 Week 10 (Oct 27) - Unit 11 Week 11 (Nov 3) - Unit 11; Exam Week 12 (Nov 10) - Unit 12 Week 13 (Nov 17) - Unit 12 Week 14 (Nov 24) - Unit 13 (Thanksgiving) Week 15 (Dec 1) - Exam; Unit 14  Week 16 (Dec 8) - Unit 15, Grammar Final Week 17 (Dec 15) - Readings from Units 13-15 Week 18 (Dec 22) - Reading Exam Weeks 19, 20, 21, 22 - Prose and Poetry Readings

In the next few weeks, I might keep continuing with the M&F text also just until I get to unit 4, since that is where almost the entire verbal system is introduced, while K&R only brings in subjunctives after unit 7. It would be good to have those extra verbs, so as to quickly start doing extensive synopses.
