Something I feel isn’t discussed enough re: Thunder and Whisper, mainly because I think we all take it for granted, is that they aren’t from Albion. We know they’re from "The South Islands”, possibly Aurora, possibly someplace that isn’t explained in later games (my personal belief), but the point is that they aren’t from there. They’re only in Albion because Thunder was able to save the both of them, the implication being that, if their parents weren’t dead already, they died in the shipwreck. Thunder can’t have been too old at the time -- There seems to be an age gap between the two of them, but it stands to reason he might have been a teenager. So you have these two people, these two kids, alone in a foreign country. We know, from Lucrezia’s presence (though I suspect she comes from Samarkand, not the South Islands) that there’s a taste in Albion for what they consider to be “exotic”, but that doesn’t translate into respect or care. We don’t know when they got to the Guild of Heroes -- it might have been just afterwards, with the Guild becoming aware of their actions during the shipwreck, it might have been after. 

Of COURSE Thunder took to being a Hero. It got him respect, it got him *belonging*, it got him status. Of COURSE he pressures his sister into being the best Hero she can be -- in his mind, being a Hero is what got them everything they have, every ounce of stability. It’s all he’s really known for years, it’s what he lives for. It doesn’t mean that it’s right, especially given that it comes at the expense of the Hero of Oakvale, who’s a traumatized child, but he isn’t the only traumatized child in the Guild at the time. Of course Whisper would be competitive, because she has to be. The Hero of Oakvale *is* from Albion, he blends in, he is accepted as One of Them in ways that Thunder and Whisper never will be. It isn’t an option for her to sit by and take second place when she has to justify her place in society in a way that the Hero of Oakvale doesn’t. Of course Thunder resents the Hero of Oakvale for the arena and then taking Lady Grey -- regardless of whether or not he does love her in canon (I think that the writers, honestly, just fell into a lot of unfortunate stereotypes about black men and white women), she is also a *lady*. She’s beautiful, yes, but she also represents a level of nobility, privilege, and status that Thunder, as a foreigner, can’t achieve. Marrying her wouldn’t just be marrying Elvira Grey, Mayor of Bowerstone, it would be marrying his way into society. And then that’s taken away from him. By the Hero of Oakvale, who is, once again, a native citizen of Albion. If he’s lost Whisper as well, that’s everything. He’s lost his prestige, he’s lost his chance to integrate into Albion society, he’s lost his little sister who is the only thing that he brought to Albion with him. Of course he’s broken. Of course he’s bitter. 

And obviously, this is built on a lot of headcanons and speculations, I’m not claiming this is canon when we get so little of these two in canon, but it at least helps to explain *why* the two of them are like that -- they’re playing by totally different rules than the Hero.

The big event today was the impromptu appointment at the Sydney Opera House (SOH) for the performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni. All in all things didn't go too smoothly on the run up to the concert. We went into the City early to get a prepaid SIM card in the knowledge that we needed our passport to do this. The Vodafone girl therefore was not impressed when it was clear we had forgotten it. So having to make a special journey tomorrow to get one. Then having arrived at the SOH in our finery, we ordered the interval Sauv. and a couple of flat whites to go and sat down on one of the leather cushioned benches in the bar area. I momentarily put the coffee cup down next to me when an American lady with a huge bum heavily placed it 2 feet away, sending my cup into orbit, seesaw fashion. It was perfectly fine on the way up, but on its descent became more fluid especially on the seat and subsequently my trouser department. There's a certain irritation and embarrassment involved regarding wet trousers in a public place such as the SOH just prior to what was to be a pleasant evening. The other theatre guests were gathering; ladies in evening attire, men with big floppy artistic hats, luvvies, actor types, cream jackets that might have been considered trendy 20 years ago but now looking a bit worn, good accents, bad accents and right in the middle was me with a big damp patch doing my best to make a fashion statement. We stood in the weak evening sunshine on the terrace hoping the suns rays might help.

All that is an extended overture to the main business of the evening. Giovanni is a brutal opera about a very topical and modern subject, Don Giovanni who is a misogynistic, sexist, serial rapist murderer who should not be allowed out. It really is somewhat shocking especially after revelations about Harvey Weinstein. In the first act, DG is trying it on with Donna Anna and when her father, the Commodore intervenes, DG kills him. DG is wearing a tiny little mask at the time which apparently rendered him completely unrecognisable! After much argy bargy it becomes known that it is indeed DG that killed the Commodore and the community seeks to hunt him down to kill him. The other shocking aspect to the story is the way the women are portrayed. Donna Elvira despite knowing DG killed the Commodore, is still saying she loves him! So is Zerlina. It all ends well in the end. The Commodore comes in for dinner as a stone statue and has DG dragged off to hell and we see no more of him till the encore.

Shocking plot, great singing, great production, great theatre, great location great big damp patch. What an occasion! The SOH is the place to go!

We then marched across empty streets to Wynyard to catch the 173x home. The bus drops us within half a mile of home, but this seems a long way at 11.30pm and so reminded me of when as a child, dad had taken us all out for a long day, and to save a couple of bob we alighted at the fare stage before our stop and walked the rest, dark, normally bright red London buses turned grey in the light of the yellow sodium street lighting. It seemed so far to go. Cup of tea and a white Tim Tam soon bucked the spirits.

Last day here before collecting a car from the airport and traveling north towards Brisbane.

ps This opera was first performed in Prague in 1787 which was pretty much when the first fleet was mooring up in Sydney Harbour. Incredible to think of the differing circumstances.

Brett gelman mixing up decades with 70s disco striped trousers and that green fringed jacket, like I can’t tell if he didn’t know that timeless didn’t mean “get all the times in one outfit” or if he lost a bet and had to wear something an evil friend picked out at a charity shop (affectionate)

Millie’s dress would be gorgeous but for the side slit. Not in a hypersexualing way I just really don’t think the side slit suits the dress.

Matthew Modine going for the grey pattern on grey pattern is a LOOK. Wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a GOOD look but an appropriate look

Priah‘s dress is pretty except for the weird fishnet skirt bit. Still I can’t see it too much on this low res livestream so I’m gonna have to find a decent pic before I can give my proper opinions on it

Natalia looking like Cher meets Elvira meets burlesque flapper dress vampire and it WORKS

Winona Ryder rocking that suit. Likewise Sadie looking boss. Yes ladies. Show the men how to wear a suit.

I know I’m going to get flack for this but I wish Victor from there Love Hurts quest was romance able. I know people think he’s a creep for resurrecting Lady Grey but I can’t help but feel sort of bad for him. Like, everyone rejected him because he was different and shy and awkward around them.

(That and Lady Grey is a horrible human being.)

Lady Grey is on her side again. Watching Sparrow under the trees. Ignoring the sky over Bower Lake, eyebrows pinched in the middle that would give the impression one touch would smooth them. It was no surprise to Sparrow that many a man and woman had ever fallen to their knees in front of her in the past, but that was then.

Clearing her throat, she rolls her eyes over to look at the Lady. With cascading blonde hair and reanimated flesh, and eyes that just seemed a tad off if one looked too hard. Incredible that a corpse over five hundred years survived so long, but also just what magic Victor had used.

“What?”

“Most people would have taken advantage of what happened in the cemetery.”

Lips turning down into a frown, it was the sigh that gave Sparrow away. Same old argument. “I’m into a lot of things, just not necrophilia.”

“You’ve said. Several times, now.”

“So what do you want?”

“To understand you, even a little more.”

Sparrow had to wonder if the Lady was this chatty in her old life, with how she shifts onto her back as well now. Hands clasped over her stomach, half entombed in the grass. “I read the books about me, what happened since then. I remember the Hero of Oakvale, I think. What I did to… Amanda.

“I was a bad person.”

“You’re only ‘good’,” and Sparrow accompanies the word with two fingers drawn up, quotations to outline the use, “because some asshole decided to dig you up and lather you in a love spell.”

“So you believe I’m actually bad?”

“I believe… that I don’t care.”

“Then why did you pull me out of that cemetery? Why did you kill Victor?”

There’s another clearing of the throat, that rolls and builds. Too much use, not enough warm up. Sparrow rubs her throat, inhaling slow and shakily. “You were going to be his sex toy, Elvira. Even you don’t deserve that.”

Silence falls, and Sparrow knows this will not be the last of this kind of conversation. Every few nights, since they had left Bowerstone with another handful of bounties clutched in hand, it was the same thing. Lady Grey, standing over a bandit, questioning the humanity. Lack of. Reading while they sat on the back of carts, trying to piece it altogether.

Sparrow couldn’t blame her, even as she pushes herself up to sit now. Part of her hoped in five centuries no one would try to dig her up, reanimate her with some fantastic love magic, and wash away all her sins. There would forever be gaps in her memory, and no one else had lived long enough to help her fill them.

“Victor said he loved me. Lots of people did at one time, but it sounded different when he said it.”

Fractures in her voice. Lady Grey couldn’t cry, but maybe she wishes that she could in that moment. And Sparrows knows that they’re both aware about love and obsession, and the differences in between. Yet there is no feeling in her now to abate those statements, questions, fears. So she closes her eyes, and hears the grass move, and the way Elvira doesn’t need to breathe.
