What do you think about Laurent's thoughts on Rosalie and the fact he later fell in love with Irina? In MS he asked himself if Rosalie has already a mate, does that mean he already had a 'type'? Do you think Irina was his one true love or was it rather something like Tanja had felt for Edward?

My sense from the Guide was that that Irina loved Laurent more than he loved her, but they were sort of getting there? The thing about vampire mating is that according to SM, it’s not instant. It SEEMS that way because of the really intense and fast bonding we see with like, Edward/Bella, or Kate/Garrett (I think they’ve known each other like a week, maybe two, when he vows to follow her anywhere). But it’s not an instant thing like imprinting, or at least it’s not supposed to be. It’s more that once you reach that level of a relationship where you say and feel “I love you” that’s it, you’re done, your feelings will never change. You’ll never fall out of love. You’ll be in that honeymoon bliss forever. But you have to get to that “I love you” part first, and it seems like maybe Irina was closer to that than Laurent was, but given enough time they probably would have gotten there? So they’re kind of in this gray area of not-quite-mates but could-have-been. At least that’s my take given the admittedly meager information we have to go on. 

He, uh, does seem to have a type though, given that he was immediately attracted to blonde Rosalie and blonde Irina, although in the books Irina is, like so many female characters, short, only 5′2″. She’s played by the much taller Maggie Grace in the films. Also in the books she’s supposed to have a short, pale “almost silver” blonde bob rather than Rosalie’s long golden blonde hair. So they might not actually look that similar.  He almost seemed to have a thing for another blond, Carlisle, too, as Edward described a “strange yearning” from Laurent toward Carlisle. Having read the guide and learning that Laurent's gift is being able to find the most powerful/influential person in a group and gravitate toward them, I’m guessing that’s what SM was trying to describe here, but it’s certainly ambiguous in Midnight Sun and that ambiguity can support “he’s attracted to golden-eyed blonds.”

I’m officially writing out my Laurent headcanon because I cannot handle how dirty smeyer did him anymore:

In Twilight, Laurent separates himself from Victoria and James after the mess at the baseball scene. He apologizes to Carlisle and keeps an eye on the area to ensure the people there will be kept safe, knowing it is likely that a very violent James and Victoria will return and do some damage. Despite his diet, he never condoned any senseless violence. He finds that Bella has been left alone after he hears her screaming through a nightmare one night. He “accidentally” bumps into her as she goes for a walk the next evening. He assures her that he’s keeping an eye out for Victoria and will help to ensure her safety. Laurent discloses that he has been trying to switch over to a fully vegetarian lifestyle as he is in love with Irina and wishes to not only fit in with the Denali family, but to befriend the Cullen family as he knows how close the two covens are. Laurent keeps an eye out for Bella and as he is capable of reaching out to the Cullens, he gets in touch with Carlisle directly. He tells him there’s no need to worry for Bella’s safety at the moment, but he’ll keep in touch in case anything should change. The rest of New Moon happens how it happens. In Eclipse, Laurent is now fully vegetarian and he and Irina are living a happy life in love together. The Denali family helps fight Victoria’s army in Eclipse. Laurent is actually the one to take her down since he is well aware of her methods, having spent so much time with her. Laurent goes back to Alaska with Irina et al, but he and Carlisle become fast friends having much in common. Carlisle has someone with whom he can openly discuss his previous experience as part of the Volturi guard. Laurent, being an aristocrat himself, recognizes Carlisle’s diplomatic spirit. However, where the two differ is that Carlisle is entirely peaceful and pacifistic whereas Laurent has faced greater challenges (especially with all the hell Victoria and James often dragged him into), so he is much more willing to fight when the situation calls for it and when justice must be served. Bella trusts Laurent so much after all he’s done for her that she dubs him Renesmee’s godfather. As such, he is, of course, one of the first to be willing to fight for her in the battle. When the Volturi want to surrender and walk away, Laurent proudly stands tall and looks Aro square in the eyes while telling Aro that he and Carlisle are going to end this crusty ass monarchy which should’ve been ended years ago. While the current guard is powerful, the opposing side is more powerful. The Volturi ends up surrendering after Laurent initiates a lively debate, which he and Carlisle of course win. Due to his diplomacy, desire to do what is right and just, and ability to combat when necessary, Laurent becomes the first elected president of the vampire world. Carlisle is his vice president, of course. After Laurent’s century-long term, his coven brother, Garrett takes over. While he is a bit more hotheaded than Laurent, he defends the rights of vampires and insists upon the protection of humans. The vampire monarchy never returns. While corruption threatens to take over from time to time, Carlisle and Laurent are there to keep the peace and keep the democracy strong.
