What the new "Heroes" of Superman Legacy can tell us about the DCU

To somehow everyone's surprise, it seems DC has jumped the Gunn. (See what I did there?)

While many were convinced the antagonists of the 2025's Superman Legacy would be The Authority, The Elite, or even a mixture of the two, it appears for now it may be a prototype version of the Justice League.

James Gunn has casted three JLA members including Isabela Mercad as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern AKA Guy Gardner.

While the Authority, the Elite, or even another major Superman villain can play a part, I believe the spot of heroes who "do what they have to" may have been taken.

While this is a shocking turn of events, and one that may be regretful as over world building was the death of the DCEU, I do think these castings and choice of characters tells a good deal about Gunns priorities.

You see, unlike Black Adam, which brought together a team Justice Society members who it seemed Warner Bros said The Rock could have, this team seems purposeful.

So let's go through the characters and see their potential for the DCU:

Starting with the one I'm most excited for:

Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl

You thought I was gonna say Green Lantern, didn't you?

Isabela Merced is a fairly young actress, known for roles like Juliet in Hulu's Rosalind, The Widow Queen in Maya and the Queen, and most famously....

Dora Dora Dora the Explorer.

Merced is a bright young talent, who has been consistently working since 2014 and landed decent roles in big projects. Whether she continues on to be a great character actress or a leading actor, adding Merced in the DCU early almost guarantees having a star down the line.

But even more importantly than any of that, Hawkgirl is a great choice to begin a DCU.

Like Clark, she is an alien, a young hero, and a brawler. The two can find common footing and begin a very heartfelt friendship that can last throughout the DCU.

Unlike her counterpart Hawkman who isn't really any interesting, Hawkgirl was a founding member of the team for many peoples introduction to DC, The Justice League and Justice League Unlimited cartoons.

More than that, her betrayal for her home race of Thanagarians is one of the most iconic parts of the show.

If that is part of the larger narrative Gunn is trying to tell, that tells me Gunn is honoring what fans actually love.

Plus having a Peruvian woman play Hawkgirl just makes my Latinx/Hispanic heart happy.

Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific

I'm glad Darwin is getting another shot at this superhero thing.

Known for his roles in X-Men First Class, Twilight, The Blacklist, and The Harder They Fall, Edi Gathegi has also had a rather impressive career.

I like this trend Gunn has currently with Gathegi, Merced and Corenswet of actors you may recognize but not know.

What's more interesting than the cast is the character.

Mister Terrific is considered the third smartest person in the DC Universe. While he is known to use T-Spheres as a weapon, he also is an extremely skilled hand to hand combatant, a Renaissance man if you will.

To put him in perspective, he often has a friendly rivalry with Batman.

Terrific is a fan favorite character, and one we haven't seen before in film. He can bring a dynamic fighting style, and a perspective of advanced intellect that can challenge Clark. Gunn clearly wants to bring in the characters people love, in a way they don't expect.

Which leads me to:

Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern

Just not the one you're thinking.

I could go into Fillion's history, but you know him. Castle. Firefly. The Rookie. He's an icon.

While he was famously fan casted and even voiced Green Lantern Hal Jordan in several pieces of animated media, Nathan Fillion is now the DCU's Guy Gardner.

Which is, bizarre.

While Fillion is more than a capable enough actor, and has the comedic timing to play the role, I never would've expected a Green Lantern in the first Superman movie, let alone THIS one.

For those not in the know, Guy Gardner is the asshole Green Lantern. He was a football star who suffered a career ending injury in college, and kind of lives in his glory days. He's a more aggressive, often more obnoxious Lantern. Definitely the least heroic of the bunch.

Introducing Guy as the first Green Lantern, and likely leader of the JL that lost their way, makes a lot of sense. It could tempt Clark to be more like Guy, and even better, remind Guy what it means to be a hero.

In any case, character shows me Gunn is not following a specific playbook. There is no order to which Lantern comes first, nor Flash, nor any character.

Which is kind of exciting.

James Gunn has hit us with a huge curveball, basically telling us to expect the unexpected.

Which to me is a breath of fresh air.

James Gunn's upcoming Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy) will officially introduce several key Justice League heroes to the new DCU.

The DCU's first movie will see Superman enter a world populated with existing heroes and villains. This comes as the new rebooted slate gets underway and plans to introduce many more iconic heroes such as Batman in the coming years.

James Gunn's Superman Casts Justice League Heroes

The cast of James Gunn's Superman includes actors for five (potentially six) Justice League heroes who will head up the start of the new DCU.

Details of each of the heroes and their actors are explored below:

Superman (Clark Kent)

Kal-El, better known as Clark Kent or Superman, requires no introduction to any Justice League enthusiast and can be instantly recognized by his iconic red, blue, and yellow costume and blossoming cape

Hailing from the destroyed alien world of Krypton and after a lifetime being raised in the farmlands of Kansas, Earth's sun offers Clark Kent unimaginable powers of flight, super-strength, super-speed, freeze breath, heat vision, and more.

Replacing Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel is David Corenswet, an up-and-coming actor with recent credits in The Politician, Hollywood, and Pearl. Ahead of Superman, he will take to screens later this year in the disaster flick Twisters.

Green Lantern (Guy Gardner)

A member of the Green Lantern Corps, Guy Gardner, will appear in Superman, bringing with him all the familiar powers of the emerald space-cops through a will-powered ring and the ability to create glowing constructs from pure imagination.

Guy Gardner will only be the first Green Lantern to appear in the DCU before Hal Jordan and John Stewart lead the way in Max's Lanterns. It's currently unclear whether Gardner is set to join his fellow space cops for the streaming series.

Nathan Fillion will portray the Green Lantern following his leading role in the viral cop drama The Rookie. He previously worked with Superman director James Gunn during his time in the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders)

Another legendary member of the Justice League to feature in Superman is Hawkgirl, aka Kendra Saunders. Her introduction follows the big-screen debut of Hawkman in Black Adam, played by Aldis Hodge, whose future is uncertain.

With origins going back to the planet Thanagar, Saunders embodies the soul of her ancestor and the original Hawkgirl to become the latest hero, donning a set of wings and wielding a powerful mace into battle with the Justice League.

Hawkgirl will be played by Isabela Merced, who was recently seen in a superhero project in Madame Web after roles in Dora the Explorer and Instant Family. She will soon appear in HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 as Dina.

Mr. Terrific (Michael Holt)

Michael Holt is one of the greatest minds in the DC universe which he used to develop his iconic T-spheres. These powerful flying drones can be utilized for various purposes including combat, in which he is also a strong martial artist.

Better known as Mr. Terrific, Holt entered the superhero game after the accidental deaths of his wife and unborn child. He would go on to join several teams such as the Justice League and the Justice Society, and he even found his own with the Terrifics.

Edi Gathegi will play Mr. Terrific in Superman after the actor once played Darwin in X-Men: First Class and held other roles in StartUp and For All Mankind.

Metamorpho (Rex Mason)

Metamorpho is perhaps the least-known of the Justice League heroes set to appear in Superman. Otherwise called the adventurer Rex Mason, he gained his unique powers from a radioactive meteorite he found in an Egyptian pyramid.

After the incident, Mason became able to shape-shift his body into various forms and elements, including turning part or all of him into solids, liquids, or gases.

Metamorpho will be played by Anthony Carrigan, who took two dips into the DC mythos before in Gotham and The Flash. Other recent credits for the actor are Barry, Bill & Ted Face the Music, and more.

BONUS.) Supergirl (Kara Danvers)

Kara Danvers, aka Kara Zor-El, is the older cousin to Clark Kent who was sent to Earth to protect him but ultimately her pod went off course and she arrived years later. Now, she follows in his footsteps on Earth as Supergirl, brandishing a similar powerset and donning an outfit akin to her cousin.

Supergirl has not been officially confirmed to appear in Superman, with James Gunn stating on Threads he "never even said she was in the movie" when news broke about casting for the Kryptonian hero.

Regardless, her appearance in Superman would make sense ahead of her starring in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Based on the comic of the same name by Tom King, the movie is reportedly set to enter production later this year from director Craig Gillespie and writer Ana Nogueira to become the DCU's second movie.

The DCU's Supergirl will be brought to life by Milly Alcock, who found fame in 2022 as the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first half of HBO's House of the Dragon Season 1, a spin-off to Game of Thrones.

When Will the DCU's Justice League Assemble?

Superman will kickstart the new DCU as Clark Kent enters a world filled with existing heroes such as those explored above. That said, it's unclear if these heroes are operating together under an umbrella such as the Justice Society or whether they are scattered around and working alone.

Currently, it seems more likely the latter will be the case, as Superman ushers this world into a new and more hopeful era of heroes. This tonal shift ought to be the first step toward one day assembling the Justice League in the DCU whenever a threat powerful enough to unite Earth's heroes finally comes along.

But fans shouldn't expect to see the Justice League unite anytime soon, as there are plenty more characters who will need projects before then such as Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Martian Manhunter, while the likes of Batman already have a solo movie on the docket with Brave and the Bold.

As it will undoubtedly take many more years to introduce all of these important players, it would be shocking to see the new Justice League assemble to conclude Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters anytime before 2029 or 2030.

That said, there will likely be plenty of teases and smaller crossovers to come before then, with Superman already set to include seven major heroes. Just as was the case with the MCU over a decade ago, fans should prepare for years of build-up and cryptic hints before this new team assembles.

Superman Remake Cast Update & Daredevil's New Journey Unveiled!

Pruitt Taylor Vince has joined the cast of James Gunn’s highly anticipated “Superman” reboot, taking on the iconic role of Jonathan Kent, also known as Pa Kent. In this fresh take on the classic superhero tale, Jonathan Kent is Superman’s caring adoptive father, who discovers the infant superhero in a Kryptonian spacecraft amidst the fields of Kansas.

Vince steps into the shoes of previous actors who've portrayed Pa Kent, including Kevin Costner in "Man of Steel" (2013) and Glenn Ford in "Superman" (1978). Superman Legacy casting news has landed!

When James Gunn announced that he was re-starting the entire Superman storyline, with a brand-new Superman movie called Superman Legacy, the first question that everyone obviously had in mind was "Who is going to replace Henry Cavill?" Thankfully, fans didn't have to wait too long, because he recently announced that David Corenswet will be taking on this Superman Legacy casting in the iconic role, and at the same time he also confirmed that Rachel Brosnahan would be playing Clark Kent's love interest, Lois Lane! With David, he has starred in projects such as Pearl and We Own This City, and in a similar vein to say Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, James Gunn is clearly giving us a character that viewers won’t be able to compare to too many other characters or franchises, and in movie history, this idea always works extremely well. For Rachel, viewers would have seen her in her fantastic role as Miriam 'Midge' Maisel in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a show which shows she can easily take on the character of Lois Lane, with a fresh approach! When it comes to cinema history, it doesn't get much bigger than Superman, and I'm really excited to see how they'll tackle these fantastic characters. With the highly anticipated announcement of the two leads now confirmed, what fans have now been wondering, is “Who else will feature in the movie?” and, after giving followers just a tiny bit of time to accept the first bit of huge casting news, James Gunn has now added even more actors, to an already impressive line-up. We’ve got Anthony Carrigan (Barry) taking on the role of Rex Mason, and Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl just to start with. Chadwick Boseman did a brilliant job with T’Challa, and his performance in Civil War cannot be understated. He made it one of my favorite movies of all time and it felt like the character literally popped out of the comics. However, I don’t think it’s a dedication to just dispose T’Challa and not explore him any further. This isn’t like Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, etc. where there’s already 1000s of movies, T’Challa just started. As the first Black superhero and one that wasn’t a hand-me-down from a white character, created by Jack Kirby mainly and co-produced by Stan Lee, I feel he deserves to be treated like an icon as they are. He’s one of my favorite comic book characters and I’ve been waiting for T’Challa to have his own trilogy since The Avengers. I don’t want him to get killed off (and no, other Black male characters are not substitutions. Black characters are not interchangeable.)

After Shuri battles Namor in the second movie, I want to see T’Challa come back as the main character for the 3rd and 4th movie to complete his story arc. I’d also like for Shuri to transition into being her own superheroine, Griot, and finish her own trilogy.

Here’s some actors who can play T’Challa:

This tweet said it best: “I feel like John David Washington (especially without the beard he always rocking) is one of the few actors with the same physicality and regal charisma as Boseman had as T’Challa.” The son of Denzel Washington, who was Chadwick’s inspiration. It’s like poetry, it rhymes. I can think of no one less offensive than him to play T’Challa. Plus, wouldn’t it be funny in hindsight for Tenet to be the closest thing to have T’Challa work with Bruce Wayne?

Malachi Kirby. He is currently just came out of a universal acclaimed movie (Mangrove) and even worked well with Letitia Wright.

Michael Ward

Edi Gathegi. Plus he’s an authentic Native African (Kenyan)

Tope Tedela. Another authentic Native African (Nigerian). He’s also multiple Award winning Nollywood

Aldis Hodge

You can still use T’Challa without disrespecting Chadwick Boseman’s memory. Here's one example: Give T’Challa’s middle name Boseman. Have a scenario where one of the actors make a 4th-wall-ish dedication. My personal scenario is, (if you brought him back) you can have Michael B. Jordan through Killmonger ask T’Challa about himself. He mentions his middle name, and Killmonger can reminisce over who how that name reminds him of “a special friend of his” that he loved dearly and misses.

Jay-Z western 'The Harder They Fall' fires up London Film Festival

LONDON

With Idris Elba leading an impressive all-black cast and Jay-Z among the producers, the premiere of Netflix's reimagined western "The Harder They Fall" opened the London Film Festival with a bang on Wednesday.

The movie, a directorial debut for Londoner Jeymes Samuel, showcases an array of black talent portraying real-life historical characters from the Old West in a fictional plot, set to a reggae and beats-laden soundtrack.

Samuel, who co-produced and co-wrote the original screenplay, left longtime friend Elba with little choice but to play Rufus Buck, a violent and feared outlaw of the era.

"(It was) 'you're doing it'... we grew up together... and here we are making a western," Elba joked, as the pair discussed the film at a news conference with other cast and crew ahead of the premiere.

Samuel, also a singer-songwriter and music producer who worked with Jay-Z on tracks for "The Great Gatsby" in 2013, said collaborating again reaffirmed the rap star's talents go well beyond music.

"The interesting thing is he's super cine-literate," the 42-year-old filmmaker said.

"People think (of) the name Jay-Z and they automatically assume... music," he added, noting he was vastly knowledgeable about both westerns and "film in general".

Samuel said he landed a "dream cast" for "The Harder They Fall" which also includes actor-director Regina King as Buck's sidekick "Treacherous" Trudy Smith, and Jonathan Majors as his rival outlaw Nat Love.

LaKeith Stanfield, Zazie Beetz and Edi Gathegi also star in a story of revenge on the plains of Texas scored with pulsing music that features Nigerian icon Fela Kuti, among others.

The novice director, who grew up watching westerns on British television, explained "the genre of the Old West was always alluring" but that he wanted to "do more with it".

"The scope that they showed those stories through was very narrow... women of all colors were always subservient. If you were a person of color, you were less than human," Samuel said.

Apart from three screenings at the London Film Festival and some showings in select U.S. theaters, "The Harder They Fall" will get its global release on Netflix on November 3.

The streaming platform is "the right place" for the highly cinematic film, according to co-producer James Lassiter, who persuaded Samuel of its virtues.

"The goal if we're going to tell a story like this, with this cast, is to have as many people around the world (with) access to it," Lassiter said.

"Sometimes when you do a theatrical release, there's these built-in biases, like no one wants to see an all-black cast," he added, noting "in certain territories they will tell the studios 'this movie's not for us'."

Meanwhile for Elba, who contracted COVID-19 last year, the global health crisis had a profound impact on him and his mindset during filming.

"The pandemic has shown that we're all human and the race thing is pretty stupid," he said. "Obviously, there's systematic racism that sits in our system which is going to take time to get out, but in terms of story-telling, it's a great day for us. It's a great day for everyone."

The 49-year-old actor noted his own personal battle with the virus helped him harness "compassion" in his portrayal of the dislikeable and brutal Buck.

"It really gave me a life-changing perspective. So I think I ended up injecting some of that maturity... into that character," Elba said. "We encouraged each other to get deeper, under the skin with these characters."

Before hitting the small screen, "The Harder They Fall" got its cinematic unveiling at London's Southbank Centre on Wednesday evening, with Jay-Z making an appearance on the red carpet to kickstart the 12-day film festival.

Now in its 65th year, it will close with "The Tragedy Of Macbeth", starring the Oscar-winning Frances McDormand, whose husband Joel Coen directs, and fellow Academy Award winner Denzel Washington.

Regina King’s ‘One Night In Miami’ Trailer Released After Closing Out Hamptons Film Festival BIG + Regina, Zazie, & Lakeith Join Idris For A Netflix Western

Earlier this year, Regina King kicked off production in New Orleans for her feature film directorial debut. And we have been patiently waiting for new info about the film to come out.

The Oscar winning actress will be calling the shots for her upcoming film, One Night in Miami, which she dubbed a “love letter to black manhood.”

One Night in Miami is a fictional account of an evening where Black icons Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown gathered to discuss their roles in the civil rights movement and cultural upheaval of the 60s.

The Golden Globe winner will be directing and handful of hotties, including Kingsley Ben-Adir ("The OA") who’ll play civil rights activist Malcolm X, Eli Goree ("Riverdale") who’ll star as famous boxer/activist Cassius Clay right before he became Muhammad Ali, Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton) as famed football player/activist Jim Brown, and Grammy/Tony Award winner Leslie Odom Jr. (Harriet) playing iconic singer Sam Cooke.

Kemp Powers wrote the film and its based off of his 2013 stage play, “One Night in Miami.”

One Night in Miami is set to close out the 28th edition of the Hamptons International Film Festival, which is taking place virtually and with drive-in screens.

“We have long admired the work of Regina King — throughout the years she has given phenomenal and groundbreaking performances, and we look forward to being able to now spotlight her craft and skill behind the camera with her directorial debut,” said HIFF artistic director David Nugent.

The film – which became the breakout film at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month – could put Regina in the history books…again! The bomb actress made history at the 77th annual Venice Film Festival by becoming the first Black female director to have a film screened!

Now, there’s OSCAR buzz!

One Night in Miami could be Amazon Studios in the 2021 Academy Awards mix. If Regina nabs a directing nomination, she’d be the FIRST Black woman and the sixth woman nominee in the category in 92 years. The film’s lead stars - Aldis, Leslie, Kingsley or Eli – could also nab nominations. Nice!

In other film news...

An all-black Western is coming to Netflix! British hottie Idris Elba is ready to saddle up as the lead star in the upcoming Western titled, The Harder They Fall, and Jay-Z is producing it.

Now, the cast is rounding out.

EMMY winner Regina King, Zazie Beetz, Lakeith Stanfield, and Delroy Lindo have signed on to star in the western film, joining Idris and Jonathan Majors. Also, Danielle Deadwyler, Edi Gathegi and RJ Cyler will co-star.

Here’s a synopsis of the film: Outlaw Nat Love (Majors), who, upon discovering that the man (Elba) who killed his parents two decades previously is being released from prison, reunites with his gang to track his enemy down and seek his revenge.

Jeymes Samuel, who’s known as singer-songwriter The Bullitts, will make his directorial debut on the project. Jeymes will also be producing the project alongside Hov, film producer/Will Smith's long-time business partner James Lassiter and Lawrence Bender. Jeymes collaborated with Boaz Yakin for the film’s script.

Jay-Z and Jeymes will collaborate to write and produce original music for the film. They previously collaborated on The Great Gatsby soundtrack. Don't be surprised if you see Idris on the soundtrack since he raps. Ha!

The first Twilight movie premiered 10 YEARS ago, which is almost too crazy to comprehend, but it’s true. And to honor the movie-slash-global phenomenon, a few Twilight cast members stopped by New York Comic Con over the weekend to share their fondest memories of the filmmaking process.

Actors Kellan Lutz, Jackson Rathbone, and Edi Gathegi joined the film’s director, Catherine Hardwicke, for a panel to reminisce about the very first Twilight movie. One of the scenes Kellan and Jackson remember most vividly was the iconic Vampire baseball scene.

Jackson, who played Jasper Hale in the franchise, explained of filming the scene QUOTE, “The vampire baseball scene was a big thing…I remember seeing it on the page and thinking, how are we gonna make this look cool? How is this not gonna be just B-movie camp? But luckily we were in the hands of an incredible cinematographer [Elliot Davis] and of course, Catherine directed the hell out of it.”

Kellan, who played Emmett Cullen in the franchise, also gushed about Catherine’s directing, saying QUOTE, “I really enjoyed working with her. Any setup she had, she would get in there and act it out for us. During the baseball scene, she had us acting like cats and bears and animals so we could give life to these vampires who are ‘the undead’ and don’t have much going on.”

Catherine also revealed that all of the actors had to train for that baseball scene, including Rob Pattinson, who — thanks to his British upbringing — had never played baseball before!

And speaking of Rob, while he was unable to join the panel in person, he did manage to call in via Skype. Unfortunately some technical issues made his video chat a bit rocky, but he still managed to thank fans and express his love and appreciation for them, as well as the franchise that made him a household name. Kristen Stewart also took the time to tape a pre-recorded video message, which was also shared with fans at the panel.

To celebrate the film’s 10 year anniversary further, Twilight is being re-released into more than 450 movie theatres across the US! The special screenings will take place on October 21st and October 23rd, so start booking those tickets ASAP!

And for those who can’t make it out to the theatres, don’t worry, because Lionsgate is also re-releasing all FIVE Twilight Saga films on Blu-ray, with new collectible artwork and features. Movie marathon anyone?
