I am so sick of continuing legal education classes. Make it stop. I'm three hours out from being done.
Update: Four. Four hours. Four hours out.

I firmly believe that Karl Jobst never retained an attorney because Holy Shit how are you still talking about Billy Mitchell while you're being sued by the guy???

I just submitted a comment I’ve been working on since September for consideration for publication in a legal journal (the flagship journal of my state!) and I really wish I had the energy to feel any type of way about it other than Dead Fucking Exhausted

Really good read, definitely worth it if you're interested in web design at all. It's a report on dark patterns, a facet of deceptive design.

serious question: are people aware that you do not have to actually name a person when discussing something they’ve done in order to be sued for defamation?
i ask because i keep seeing people say “she didn’t say his name” in relation to sheryl lee ralph and this potential defamation suit (i say potential because it’s being talked about but it doesn’t appear to be verified anywhere) and a lot of people seem to be under the impression that you can only be sued for defamation if you reveal the person’s identity when discussing something they did and that’s not actually true. if you are discussing something that someone has done and you provide enough information (even something small) about them that enables the general public to easily identify the person in question, that is also defamation.

Consider: Not Lying to the Cops
It usually doesn't work.
I've seen many posts that say lying to the cops is always morally correct.
I'd say it's morally neutral at best (in the US anyway) and here's why:
Lying to the cops is shockingly ineffective as a tactic most of the time. Lying is hard! It's hard to keep your story straight. And once you start talking (even by lying) you might say something that compromises you or a comrade. It can also sometimes be a separate crime! Which is really the last thing you need to be dealing with.
Instead try: SILENCE. Do not talk to the cops even to lie. Tell the cops you are going to remain silent and that you want a lawyer. Then talk to the lawyer about your options once you have privacy. You have a right to a lawyer if you are facing criminal allegations (and especially if you are arrested). Use it!
Remember: loose lips sink ships.
Resources:
You may remember the NLG from the SHUT THE FUCK UP video. I've been a proud member since 2016.
The Tilted Scales guide to being a defendant is excellent (and free to download).

Not to Harp on about Daniel Kaffee in the year of our lord 2022, but the reason he’s like that™, aside from the grief and ADHD is in law school they just pump your head full of different ways of citing american law in a book that’s nearly 400 pages long
