I've been a bit of a salty spitoon over the recent events unfolding at NYCC so here's some GOOD news (sorta) >:00

I say (sorta) because I'm not a huge fan of mongie's work (or mongie herself) either, but DAMN if this lady doesn't know how to GET SHIT DONE-

Like GODDAMN is there a lot to show for here \(￣︶￣*\)

I don't know what the Let's Play After Dark or Omnibus works are, but it's really cool to see Linda Sejic's art here, I had NO idea what to expect when mongie announced she was going to NYCC and collaborating with Linda. I'm assuming Omnibus is likely a novelization or some kind of complimentary book to Let's Play because it has over 700 pages of stuff which is wild. Unless they just went and re-skinned the Volume 1 cover of Let's Play, I have no clue but it looks great. As for After Dark, yeah, again, no clue LMAO

Let's Play is returning in 2025, AND she's starting up a new series over on Manta (a publishing platform that's open to NSFW material which will definitely be better for mongie's work and will hopefully give WT a run for their money LOL) She hasn't stated yet where Let's Play's new home will be, but I'm assuming if it's not Manta, it might be a new independently-run site altogether, but again, we'll just have to wait and see. I remember her mentioning she wanted to do a fantasy series on her Patreon ages ago so it seems like she's finally getting the opportunity to do so. I have no idea what she's going to do with Let's Play after its S3 jump the shark finale LMAO

She's getting some merch made with BIOWORLD which is neat, though it'll be interesting to see how the quality comes out because the last creator I saw working with BIOWORLD was Smythe and the merch was uhhhh- not great. I posted about it on IG a while back but I don't know if I ever talked about it here so I'll def make that as a separate post for anyone who's curious.

But the BIG one - Let's Play is getting an anime, and it's from an actual animation studio which is a way bigger sign that it's a sure thing.

Again, I'm not a huge fan anymore of Let's Play or mongie in general, but I gotta give her credit where credit is due, she had WAY more to show for herself at NYCC than Rachel did, and the fact that she did all this after burning her bridges with WT, that's gotta sting for WT's and Rachel who still don't have anything to show for an animated TV show after four years. At this rate, there are gonna be more creators succeeding on a mass scale by choosing not to publish with Webtoons than those who did.

And who knows, maybe the anime adaption will tidy up all the problems original Let's Play had. It remains to be seen, but I think it's pretty neat to see mongie making such strides since she left the platform.

I can't be the only one that feels incredibly weird about Sam's portrail in the comic. She is a grown woman that has grown up with the internet but she gets characterized as the most innocent, oblivious and frankly dumb "hot nerdy girl" ever.

In the newest update (non fast pass) she literally talks about being scared to buy women hygiene products and is completely oblivious to contraception. She can't even IMAGINE what purpose a flavoured condom could have. She knows next to nothing about sex and has been the "innocent virgin" for most of the story. Trembling A LOT while getting intimate and passing out after doing anything sexual. She gets so infantilised by the author, it's kind of scary. But then at the same time she is shown as an absolutely sexy beast and horny as fuck at some points. It gives me reaaaal bad vibes ngl.

Even her sickness makes her the poor fragile girl in every possible scenario. At the same time acting as a reason for her father to have absolutely no boundaries and seeing her as... well "The poor little innocent girl" (which she always is). Meanwhile his behavior gets played up for laughs and she can't for the life of her stand up for herself.

Not even mentioning that every single desirable woman in this comic is incredibly thin while at the same time having the biggest boobs ever. Especially in Sam's case it's almost comical how big her tits are feeding into the whole "innocent but sexy" trope. It doesn't matter what she wears, her boobs are always shown to be enormous. Maybe this wouldn't be a problem if not every single other female had these big boobs as well. The only women that doesn't look like a model (in her office) gets played for laughs because she's single but lmao she can't get a guy! Hilarious.

I don't even want to get into how weird this whole Charles thing has played out. At first I liked it but more and more this is getting weird. But I guess it doesn't matter anyways since this story is most likely going to end with Sam and Marshall as the endgame couple. It's been "the goal" of this comic since episode one and these other men (Link and Charles) are just filler on the way to Marshall.

Sam has been the innocent, fragile, shy, oblivious, sick, sexy, nerdy girl for 168 episodes now and she has had next to none character growth.

First review: aw shit you know it's gonna be a webtoon--- my review for the first 3 seasons of Let's Play

Okay what drew me in to read this was the alleged controversy around it. I don't remember EXACTLY what was said about it but I remember hearing people be like "eugh" about it. So naturally when I had the time, I wanted to see for myself.

While I did enjoy reading the webtoon, I can definitely see where people get the ire from. The fmc is so stupidly sheltered, it's almost frustrating at times. Seriously, in the age of the internet and online gaming how can you, a 22 year old, not know what flavored condoms are used for?

Sam (the fmc) has been sheltered by her family and friends (mainly her father) due to her childhood illnesses and general issues with anxiety/confrontation. While they mean well, it's stunted her growth as an adult woman. Her biggest thing imo is her wrestling with her own self confidence, she says a few times when people ask about her wardrobe, that she feels like "a kid playing dress up" which again, is due to her being sheltered and not given enough space to spread her wings.

The plot is interesting to me! It's new enough to capture my attention but with familiar tropes that I'm like "oho, right up my alley indeed"

Speaking of characters, I STAN MONICA. I love how Monica is written to be sexy and confident, but she doesn't tear down other women to build herself up. It can be SO easy for writers to make characters like Monica into being the one dimensional mean girl antagonist. But Monica only ever uplifts Sam, giving her fashion and relationship advice and is never jealous of Marshall's friendship with her. She's only upset with Marshall when he basically pushes himself overboard trying to play Sam's game that he ended up in the hospital, which again she never blames Sam for it. We love women characters supporting each other.

On the opposite end, is Marshall's older sister Eva. When Marshall is in the hospital, she meets Monica for the first time and is immediately judgemental and catty towards her. Your brother's heart stopped beating and you're gonna be an ass to his girlfriend, um okay then. Also Eva has major daddy issues, which became GLARINGLY obvious when her dad first made an appearance in the webtoon. The man looks like Charles, same eye color and hair style (but the dad's is slightly longer and gray) which makes me think that's why she went after Charles (this has yet to be verified in the webtoon but come on, I have eyes and reading comprehension skills). As of right now I don't like Eva. Nope. Everyone was like "waa waa Charles is a manipulator waa waa" bitch she's literally manipulating Marshall into doing something for their abusive dad.

SPEAKING OF CHARLES.....

I don't care what the haters say, I love this character. I know that Sam will more than likely end up with Marshall but shhhh lemme enjoy Sam/Charles while they're canon. I can't help it y'all, I love a slightly toxic fictional man. (who am I kidding I love all levels of toxic fictional men). They way that chains have been used as a visual for him, makes me think that he will be possessive of Sam at some point and ough I can't wait for the d r a m a. Also Charles checking Sam's phone in the middle of the night and Sam catching him? 👀 I do like how Charles never coddles Sam and actually treats her like an adult. He pushes her outside of her comfort zone (dressing more professional, meeting with clients face to face, the self love exercise he makes her do every morning at work) but also recognizes when she's extremely uncomfortable doing something and doesn't force her to do it (making her propose the project to the game developer company herself, Charles could see that she wasn't there yet so he wasn't going to make her).

Tbh I don't have much to say about Sam/Marshall. They've made each other blush a few times but it wasn't really a romantic type of way?? Just them being awkward nerds to each other + Sam being sheltered. They're still very much in friend territory right now but with the way things left off at the end of season 3 (Marshall is single now, and Sam caught Charles looking at her phone) its only a matter of time before Sam/Marshall becomes the current ship. I DO like him as a character though, don't get me wrong but we'll see how the author goes about a Sam and Marshall romantic relationship.

ALSO...

I read a few reviews where people criticize the Sam/Charles paring because of his age (what is his age???? they never specified in the comic. just that he's old enough to have been married and divorced lmao) and the dynamic that comes with it? While Sam is still very inexperienced with navigating romantic relationships (both physical and emotional aspects), Charles has told her to be the one to initiate being physical so that she can go at her own pace with him. He doesn't want a boyfriend/girlfriend thing (pffff we've seen how that's been working out for him, Sam is literally melting his heart) and has communicated that clear to her from the beginning. I am curious though.....would not a Sam and Marshall romance also have a somewhat unequal power dynamic going on? Marshall might be much closer to her age, but he's a celebrity, she's not. That's a power dynamic imbalance if ever I've seen one lmao.

One thing that really annoys me, and I'm greatly annoyed anytime I see it in any other media...

When we learn that Sam's friend Angela was assaulted, the writer has Angela say how "broken" she feels. This is a pet peeve of mine, and I'm aware that not everyone feels this way and that everyone is entitled to describing their feelings however they want, but for me....I absolutely hate that. Maybe it's my evangelical upbringing but when I'm reading a fic/book/webtoon/whatever, and the writer uses the word broken to describe how a character feels (*especially* when the character has been assaulted) it just gives me MAJOR ick. I'm used to hearing broken in terms of people in a church setting, ex. "you're broken and god fixes broken people." Friends, I don't know how to explain it other than I just do not like it at all. anytime I read/listen to the word broken in reference to a human person, my mind deducts points from the media.

Another thing I must deduct points on is that literally every character (minus 2 people) have the exact same body type. We have 1 plus size male character that is a coworker, and 1 thin female coworker. there isn't much diversity in the recurring characters' bodies, I kid you not 99% of the female characters (except this one coworker) are hour glass bombshells, and 99% of the male characters (except the other coworker) are chiseled with well defined muscles. yes I know what fanservice is but come ON.

anyway overall I did enjoy the webtoon. it has its flaws that I take beef with, but I was entertained nonetheless

PLACEBO: Let's Play - By Cuke Soap (7.5/10)

This one gets extra points because it's so messy, but it's also unrealistic. There's a little too much torture and jealousy. That's the entire plot. There's no room for anything else, but it is suitably horrifying. It also caters to a very specific preference. If you like hypnosis and submissiveness this is the one for you.

Woo-yeon and Woo-jin are step brothers.

Poor Woo-yeon. He's the cute one. The less cool one. It's embarrassing because he's supposed to be the big brother, and Woo-jin is cooler than him.

In the beginning Woo-yeon looks like the crazy one. He hates his brother. He doesn't want to see him in college. Not in class. Not in the hall. He's full of rage as soon as Woo-jin enrolls in his program. That quickly wears off. It is strange that both brothers are taking the same classes and major at the same time.

Woo-yeon is willing to drop courses to get away too, which makes him seem more desperate than scary.

He's got a crush on his classmate, Junghwi. He's in the closet too. He's not having a good time. He isn't a popular guy. Woo-jin bullied him in high school. He was really sneaky about it. He played up his innocence well. Woo-yeon has always looked like the crazy one, but he's not.

He's just paranoid.

Woo-yeon is right behind them from the start. It's easy to pity Woo-yeon.

By the way Woo-jin is also the favorite child at home. There's no escape from his perfect influence.

Woo-jin corners him.

"Let's Play"

That's the hypnosis phrase Woo-jin uses to make Woo-yeon submissive. Woo-jin is a highly controlling and abusive yandere. He doesn't want Woo-yeon to have any friends. He's willing to make Woo-yeon miserable as long as they can keep "playing"

Woo-jin is extremely bossy and unbearable, even when Woo-yeon isn't under his influence. You can feel how trapped Woo-yeon is. Woo-jin is clearly stalking him, but nobody will ever believe him.

When Woo-yeon is in sub hypnosis mode he is nothing like his original self. He's super happy to play with Woo-jin. He's not even hesitant. Woo-yeon likes it too much. He starts to get crazy jealous of his real life crush.

Woo-jin tries to embed suggestions into Woo-yeon's brain that will activate when he says or does certain things. Playtime isn't enough anymore. Woo-jin wants to be his top priority.

Woo-jin even buys him a present. He throws out the present Junghwi bought. He also lies and says his gift is from Junghwi, so Woo-yeon will cherish it.

The cat is a character Woo-yeon's old high school friends used to joke about. He did have friends. Woo-yeon was so angry about Woo-yeon's persistent bullying that...

...he lost his friends because everyone thought he was unstable.

Woo-jin giving him the cat as a gift is just messed up. He's gross. He's a nasty puppetmaster yandere, but the hypnosis thing is kind of silly.
