10 people I want to get to know better
Hey, a tag game fun! Thanks for the tag @libertyreads
Relationship Status: Happily single and chilled
Favorite Colour(s): (Royal)Purple, Blue, and Red.
Favorite Food: Uhhh...total blank I’m afraid. If you set a bunch of things in front of me I could for sure pick a favorite but to just pick a favorite food???? Impossible. Herculean.
Song Stuck in my head: It was YAOASOBI’s “Yoru Wo Kakeru” until I re listened to If/When’s “Best Worst Mistake”.
Last Thing You Googled: DnD 5e Grappling Rules. Was listening to an Actual Play (Rolling With Difficulty strong recommend), and got curious about some stuff.
Time: 8:48pm (AST)
Dream Trip: Maybe it’s the festive mood in the air but I wanna do a full-on Zombie Island haunted house tour. Attempt to romance me by taking me to the top 10 scariest haunted prisons, and end with a fun daylit urban romp through Hashima (or Gunkanjima)
Last Thing You Read: I recently finished Milo and Marcos At The End of The World by Kevin Christopher Snipes, a fairly good little romance that handles anxiety about coming out and the changes that entails. It was a nice change of pace from The Bladed Faith by David Daglash, and The Last House On Needless Street by Catriona Ward; the first in a fantasy series involving politic and revenge and a murder mystery respectively.
Last Book You Enjoyed Reading: See above, maybe could have kept one of those for here but I enjoyed em all so they call get a shout out.
Favorite Thing to Cook/Bake: Cookies so much cookies. Peanut Butter in particular. Simple, easy, and delicious, so I’m never just too out of it to make ‘em when I need to Make Something Physical
Favorite Craft To Do In Your Freetime: Not super crafty I’m afraid.
Most Niche Dislike: Ahh time for the Something Wrong With Me to rear its head. I really don’t know? I guess bad faith arguments in general. I have to push down the urge to yell every time someone brings up “FFX Laughing Scene” when people talk about bad VA work.
Opinion on Circuses: Nada.
Sense of Direction: Yep! I’m no good and giving them but once I know the general direction I’m basically good to get anywhere.
Gonna pass on the tagging, but if someone wants ta by all means tag me in and answer away.

10 People I Want to Get to Know Better
Tagged by @libertyreads
Relationship Status: In a relationship for 5+ years.
Favorite Color(s): Purple, green, and blue.
Favorite Food: Pizza, but also crisp apples, cherries, and many other things.
Song Stuck in My Head: Still Into You by Pararmore.
Last thing you Googled: The Way of Kings (I recently got a used library copy from the free pile at my library that's back cover is falling off but in excellent condition otherwise).
Time: 8:14
Dream Trip: I've been wanting to visit Yukon for a while and would love to see the Northern Lights. Also some places in the US, just not the cities.
Last Thing You Read: I just finished Six of Crows this weekend after trying to get through it three times. It picked up after about halfway, but the end was pretty good.
Last Book You Enjoyed Reading: Six of Crows again. I'm also currently reading Taran Wanderer and A Far Wilder Magic, both which I'm enjoying.
Favorite Thing to Cook/Bake: I love baking in general, but cookies, biscuits, and breads are always a good time. I recently made an apple crisp cheesecake for Thanksgiving.
Favorite Craft to do in Your Freetime: I assume baking doesn't count, so I'll say watercolour painting when I get in the mood for it.
Most Niche Dislike: I'm not sure if it's niche, but passing by people that seem to have a cloud of perfume/cologne around them. Or people being very loud.
Opinion on Circuses: I don't believe I've ever been to one, not sure if they'd be my thing.
Do You Have Any Sense of Direction: Kinda, I'll switch left for right when giving direction sometimes (but quickly correct) and navigate better with landmarks.
It's not quite ten, but I'll tag (with zero amount of pressure): @daddygrandpaandthebeaver @tired-twili @runawayjay @not-a-princess-but-a-queen @hi-welcome-to-fartchie @pink-kitty-kela @peteyprker

Relationship Status: married to my best friend!
Favorite Color(s): Purple, violet, amethyst
Favorite Food: chocolate chip cookies (i crave chocolate so much)
Song Stuck in My Head: Perfectly Broken - BANNERS
Last thing you Googled: 4 month sleep regression (yay new baby)
Time: 10:30am
Dream Trip: I love national parks so any place with lots of trees and trails and water
Last Thing You Read: DNFd a book after chapter 4. Starting a reread of Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
Last Book You Enjoyed Reading: the Darkmore Penitentiary series by Caroline Peckham and Suzanne Valenti
Favorite Thing to Cook/Bake: I despise food prep. but i’ll take cookies because at least you can enjoy the prep
Favorite Craft to do in Your Freetime: Writing and plannering. I love stories, but sometimes my brain doesn’t want to make words. So I decorate my planner pages and make videos about it.
Most Niche Dislike: Too much noise is overwhelming. Crowds and lots of bodies, especially worse when it’s hot. Disorganization.
Opinion on Circuses: I can’t say I’m a fan. Certain performers and performances are impressive - there are some really talented people out there - but it goes with my dislike of people and noise and disorganization
Do You Have Any Sense of Direction: I have the world’s worst sense of direction. I am fine following directions (thank you gps) but ask me to direct someone and it goes to shit.

People I Want to Get to Know Better
Thank you @libertyreads for tagging me!
Relationship Status: Married for nearly seven years.
Favourite Colour: All shades of green, but a medium green with a hint of olive is one of the best shades of green.
Favourite Food: Mexican and Thai are great (but not very authentic in New Zealand).
Song Stuck in My Head: It’s usually a song from an anime my husbands been watching a lot of, but today it’s a Nirvana song (not sure what it’s called, but it’s from the MTV Unplugged Album).
Last Thing I Googled: Where to buy a particular toy for my nephew (it’s his birthday this week).
Time: 10:20 pm
Dream Trip: I don’t have any places I must go visit anymore. I visited all the ones I deeply wanted to see already (Bath, England; the Pyramids, Egypt; Petra, Jordan; Palmyra, Syria). So I will happily travel anywhere - there are so many places I haven’t been yet!
Last Thing You Read: The last book I finished was Hex Appeal by Kate Johnson. There are four books I am currently reading (I never read just one book at a time!)
Last Book You Enjoyed Reading: I enjoy almost all of them! It’s very rare for me to finish a book I’m not enjoying - those books tend to be never finished as I just read other books and the one I’m not enjoying stops getting picked up. But the best book I’ve read recently would be The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna.
Favourite Thing to Cook/Bake: I make a lot of muffins because I like eating them, and I’ve noticed that this year I’ve made a lot of soups.
Favourite Craft to do in Your Freetime: I don’t do a lot of crafting, but started English Paper Piecing last year. I have to be in a fairly low-stress high energy state to do it, so it is progressing extremely slowly.
Most Niche Dislike: Smelly things. We just spent two nights away in a little vintage cottage, and had to move all the scented candles and reed diffusers outside because it was too much! (Even one would have been too much.)
Opinion on Circuses: Not for me. But Cirque du Soleil might be interesting.
Do You Have Any Sense of Direction: Fairly good, but not great. I need to be reasonably familiar with the area, or consciously creating a mental map.
Tagging with no pressure: @archetypewriter ; @mostlyghostie ; @pendragyn ; @aroaessidhe ; and you, if you’d like to participate!

Book Review #92 of 2019:
Tumblr media
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling. Illustrations by Jim Kay. Rating: 5.0 Stars.
Reread from October 13 to October 16.
Having read and reread Harry Potter yearly since I was a child there’s just no way this book could get anything other than a five star rating from me. I love the illustrations. As always, I do wish there were more because I’m greedy like that. I could have an illustration on every other page and still want more. I love this world and despise the fact that I don’t get to live in it.
I love this world and I love these characters (even when some of them can drive me nuts--looking at you Percy) so much that rereading these books is like visiting them all again. I know a lot of dark shit continues in this book and gets worse, but I love that the books never shy away from the dark stuff even though the first one was packaged as a children’s book. I enjoyed seeing the different wizards and witches from other schools and I really enjoyed the Quidditch World Cup scenes. But I think my favorite scene is at the end when Harry goes into the hospital wing and Hermione and the Weasleys and Sirius sit around his hospital bed. Because he’s gone through so much and here’s this tiny moment of him being surrounded by people who love him. Even though it’s right when the second war is brewing. Even though he deserved this moment long before now. Harry finally gets to see that he’s loved. Then Mrs. Weasley gives Harry a hug while he’s crying and he says that it’s the first time he’s been hugged like this and just....UGH my heart.
I noticed that my reading slowed down a lot with the illustrated versions (larger pages, smaller texts...etc), but I loved seeing this world with a new perspective again. Having read these books at least 20 times by now the images that come up while reading are usually pretty set. But reading it while seeing these new illustrations really adds in a lot of the silliness and the wackiness of Harry Potter. I cannot believe that we don’t get a new illustrated version for at least two years, but I’m not surprised given how long book five is. I’ll continue my reread with my regular books later this month.

The Sunnydale Herald Newsletter, Thursday, July 15
Oz: (leans back in his chair) We should figure out what kinda deal this is. I mean, is it a-a gathering, a shindig or a hootenanny? Cordelia: What's the difference? Oz: Well, a gathering is brie, mellow song stylings; shindig, (nods to Cordelia) dip, (Cordelia smiles) less mellow song stylings, perhaps a large amount of malt beverage; and hootenanny, well, it's chock full of hoot, just a little bit of nanny.

Book Review #48 of 2019:
Tumblr media
Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller. Rating: 2.5 stars.
Read from May 18 to May 22. I always find reviewing books that are less than 3 stars to be so hard. I wish I had liked them more and I don’t want my review to be all bad so I have to really try to bring up all the things that worked well or okay. This one has been on my TBR shelf for a while so in a way I’m glad I read it. Just disappointed it wasn’t better. I’m hoping the author’s second book in the duology is better. I don’t think I’ll be reading it either way.
I loved the premise of female pirates. And I’m just starting to discover that I like stories about sirens as long as they’re done well. This book does a great job with both in my opinion. It seems like the author really took the time to think out how a siren’s abilities would work and what that would mean for them physically. There’s also a “one bed” trope in this one which I could not get enough of. I eat that shit up like candy. And a lot of the book is that way. It’s not great literature but I was able to eat this up. The only reason I didn’t finish the book in a couple of days was having to put the book down for a road trip for family stuff. This book is easy to read and to lose yourself in for a while.
This book, however, is definitely a debut novel. The author makes a lot of what most readers would consider to be rookie mistakes. We got a lot of Alosa talking about her abilities and her training rather than showing. I would have loved seeing flashbacks to her training with her father. Also, the magical/siren element didn’t even get mentioned in passing until after 100 pages and really seemed to come out of nowhere because of that. The book also read a little like Pirates of the Caribbean fanfiction. How would I know? I read a lot of PoC fanfiction after the first movie came out. There’s always been a lot of fanfiction about a girl getting caught by a pirate and having to share a bed and trope trope trope. So this book being similar just threw me back several years. It definitely didn’t help that the first mate was showing a lot of the possessiveness and jealousy of early 2000s. The last thing that really got me and probably is the reason we’re not up in the 3 star rating is that this book just glosses over an attempted sexual assault. I get that they’re pirates. But when the captain attempts this and the main character brings it up to the first mate he doesn’t have any concern for this girl he’s starting to like. If it “has to” happen then at least let your characters tell the readers that it’s unacceptable.
I’ll leave you with the words I found most enlightening about this book: “If you’re looking for some crack, shippy fun, go for it. Just go ahead and lower those expectations significantly.”
