Going to talk about subnautica and subnautica below zero for a minute. Now, i love the games, the speculative biology is very interesting, and of course I love a lot of the fauna...
But to every rule, there is an exception. Now, I do not hate any of these because of any actual criticisms, i love the work the teams have done, but because of the frustrating experience with these animals like-- i love the Chelicerate from a design and ecology point of view, but those things made me so very anxious. The shadow leviathans and I became enemies pretty quickly, as did most of the violent leviathans. But thesewere dissuaded pretty easily with a quick shock or maneuvers. The crabsquid's echolocation creeped me out so many times...
BUT. Two beings hold my hate unlike any other creatures. In the first game, I absolutely hated Warpers. I usually played creative mode in that game, and they were always the one thing that could grab me and freak the fuck out of me when i was near the structures. Then there's the roofie fish. At least, that's what I call them pretty consistently. They're actually the lilypaddlers, and they do a similar thing as the mesmer, but nooo all the mesmer wanted to do is eat me and it was pretty easy to avoid. The roofie fish on the otherhand would completely hijack my vision and send me swirling and spiralling. Damn, i hated those things. Design is one of my faves, love the concept and ecology, but goddamn that part of me that got invested in Robin's story hated them

Whats ur opinion on the blood kelpzone trench???? Asking 4 a friend
far far too scary for me by far. warpers everywhere and noises freaky. explored around exactly 1 time, saw a weird shadow (was just a rock i later concluded) and ran away and never returned even One Time since. probably a total of 2 creatures in that entire place but too scary for me

In hindsight, 1.13 was kinda dissapointing. Like, they added more stuff to the ocean, but they could have added more.
Like seriously, they only added 1 hostile underwater mob, bringing the current total to a grand total of... 2 (3 if you count Elder Guardians as a separate thing from normal Guardians) hostile mobs. Also, the different ocean biomes aren't that diverse, since - aside from Drowned mobs - 1.13 only added four passive mobs and one neutral mob, which is considerably more than before, but still not that much.
So how would I go about improving 1.13? To answer that, let's look at Subnautica.
Subnautica is a survival-Metroidvania (sort of) game created by Unknown Worlds. You play as Ryley, a "Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief" (read: space-janitor) who is on the starship Aurora when it crashes on the water-covered Planet 4546B, leaving him the only survivor. He then tries to find a way to escape while discovering strange ancient ruins, both alien and, rather ominously, human.
Since it's, you know, a game, Subnautica has NPCs; strange alien sea-creatures, each with different functions. Some are passive, some are neutral, and some are hostile. It is that last one I want to focus on.
Let's look at some of Subnautica's underwater enemies:/
Stalkers
Tumblr media
Stalkers are the first hostile creatures most players will encounter. Unlike most creatures in the game, they aren't bioluminescent, and can be fed fish in order to temporarily tame them. They also like metal, and can sometimes steal remote cameras from bases with Scanner Room modules.
Sandshark
Tumblr media
Capable of tunnelling underground, the Sandshark is an ambush predator that lives on the ocean floor.
Crabsquid
Tumblr media
Crabsquids have an EMP ability that can drain the player's various vehicles of their power, and can be distracted by lights, such as easily-craftable flares.
Mesmer
Tumblr media
Mesmers hypnotises Ryley, drawing him in while reducing the horizontal mouse-sensitivity and imitating the game's AI companion, before dealing damage when close enough.
Lava Lizard
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lava Lizards live deep below the planet's surface, where they use the local magma as a weapon, diving below before emergine with rocks on their back that they fire at their prey.
Now, what's immediately clear about these is the sheer amount of diversity in their behaviours; Stalkers can be tamed, Sandsharks can ambush you, Crabsquids can disable vehicles, Mesmers can go fuck themselves mess with the player's controls, and Lava Lizards can shoot rocks at you.
But also, they are found in different biomes; Stalkers live in the Kelp Forests found near most of the starting points (Subnautica has a pre-made map but about 3-4 randomised initial spawnpoints), Sandsharks are found in many biomes including the area around the Aurora's wreckage, Crabsquids are found in the eerie Blood Kelp Zone, Grand Reef and Lost River biomes, Mesmers live in my nightmares the deeper parts of the Kelp Forest biome, and Lava Lizards live in the Inactive Lava Zone at the very bottom of the map.
Minecraft, meanwhile, just seems to slap mobs wherever, and has very little water-biome variety. Why.
Tldr: play my mod, it has way more water mobs.

Please explain more on how you are doing the NoVehicle run??? How do you not get attacked if you run out of fish to feed them? How do you have air???
I haven’t worked on it in awhile because of well...2020, but I’m trying to get myself back into it soon hopefully since I never finished.
Generally though...patience. Lots of patience. Especially in the deeper areas where you can’t mine because you don’t have a prawne suit.
Know your space. Know where things are. Just in general be aware of your surroundings. If you’re going to be in an area with a lot of predators make sure you’re stocked.
Build survival hideouts in areas you frequent often, especially if there are a lot of predators in that area. If you run out of resources these are areas you can hide in. Build your main base in the safe shallows near areas with lots of fish and resources. Breed mesmers you can release to hunt fish you can gather to eat but will also keep Stalkers away if you build near a Kelp forest.
If you run out of live peepers, catch a hover fish, find an area with a lot of them swimming around and just...sit. The peepers will eventually come to you and you can just grab them out of the water. A lot of fish are just attracted to the hover fish if you hold one in your hand and sit still.
For bigger things that fish don’t help you with (crabsquid and ghost leviathans etc) just keep track of where they are and avoid them as best you can. Crabsquids are attracted to lights so always make sure any lights you carry are turned off in areas they are present in and just don’t get in their space. The Ghost leviathan is equally just a game of avoidance and knowing where you can hide like crevices it can’t fit in if it does come after you.
As for air, make sure you get all the equipment upgrades that you can. Fins so you swim faster, air tank and rebreather. Then you make lots of air pipes to travel into deeper areas. I mean LOTS of air pipes. To get down into the hidden river I think I used like 800m of air pipes. Create beacons that you can leave to mark the end of the air pipe so you can always make it back to it when you need to. Especially in areas with Warpers. If I ever drown it was because a Warper warped me and I couldn’t find my pipe.
Warpers suck.

so after finding out that the reaper leviathans can be hand-fed, i started wondering what else you could hand-feed in subnautica.  so i swam around with a bunch of fish in hand to various predators to see if they would take it.
please note: i was in creative mode, so i dont know if the critters become docile towards the player like the stalkers do (since in creative mode, everything is docile towards you).  all i know is that they take the food.  also, i don’t know if this is intended or if its a bug that’ll be repaired upon full release, so enjoy it while you can.
Takes Food:
reaper leviathans
sand sharks
bone sharks
ampeels
lava lizards
and stalkers, but everyone knew this already
Does NOT Take Food:
warpers
river prowlers
sea dragon leviathan*
Untested:
bleeders
blighters
crabsquids
crabsnakes
mesmers
wasnt expecting so many of them to be feedable.  not complaining, just find it weird.  and i highly doubt its supposed to happen, since the game makes a big deal of stalkers being the trainable critters.  but i dont mind, its cute.  ^^
*this one was interesting, because it immediately ate both of the lava lizards i’d fed.  just, gulped them down right after they took food from me.  it was the only time i’d seen anything attack something i’d fed.  kinda hate the sea dragon now.
