With the release of Separate Ways I've really had a revelation about the harassment that Lily Gao faced after RE4R's release. People were mad because all of her deliveries were fairly casual and straightforward rather than emotional or "seductive". Which was obviously just a creative decision. The director probably just wanted to leave behind that male gaze-femme fatale thing that Ada had and allow her to behave like a normal person... just saying... "cya later!" instead of "ssseee youuu laterrruhhh <3 <3 mwa kiss kiss".
But also i think it was just a product of all of the cut Ada content from the game. And after playing Separate Ways, we just got so much more from her voice acting because... we just got so much more from her. We had her put in scenarios where she'd actually be more emotional or vulnerable instead of casual and laid back.
I think that straight male audiences (gamers) have a habit of hating on women whom they vaguely associate with things they don't like. Think Anna Gunn getting death threats cause people didn't like Skylar. Did Anna write her? No. Vince Gilligan did. But she was getting a lotttt more hate than he was. Did Lily Gao singlehandedly just make the decision to go in an entirely new direction with Ada’s characterization? Probably not. Did she cut all of that Ada content from the main story? No. Presumably a bunch of men did all that. But we just have a much easier time hating on a woman, specifically a WOC cause... society and shit.

Oh man, so Capcom fired like a chunk of the Resident Evil voice actors for being in a union, and replaced them for Resident Evil 4.
So they hired a fairly mediocre movie actor to be the new Ada Wong, who being a mediocre movie/tv actor of course has NO voice acting experience.
So she gives a lackluster performance, like RE4 Ada originally was this like constantly coy classic femme fatale, and in the remake she sounds half asleep.
The actress finds out her performance is considered to be one of the few bad points in a pretty well crafted remake, and she does the only rational thing a mediocre actor can do.
She cries racism and harassment and deletes all her instagram posts except for one from 2020 where she talks about white privilege.

So if anyone hasn't noticed the chaos going on within the Resident Evil community currently can we get a Lily Gao Ada appreciation reblog going on.
Lily Gao has been harassed to the point of setting her social media profiles to private and its honestly disgusting to see this behavior from fellow RE players within the Fandom.
This type of behavior is not okay and that also goes for anyone that decided sexually harassing Leon's voice actor was an A OK thing to do.
This toxic behavior needs to stop the VA's are human and do not deserve being treated so horrendously by people.
Please reblog this with your favorite clips or art of Ada and Leon and go show Lily Gao some support and positivity.

This is so sad to see she deserves nothing but love and praise for her work as Ada not hate and harassment. Just because you didn’t like her as Ada, doesn’t give you the right to harass her. This is horrible. Harassment over it seems shamefully nonsensical. I love the series but, damn, come on, people, it's fiction and Lily is a real person. I thought she did wonderful as Ada, I actually liked her new voice.

So, the long-awaited and much-requested fan favourite Separate Ways campaign is finally being added as DLC tomorrow for Resident Evil 4... let's take a look at the promo for it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Out of a total of six (not counting posts that also mention Mercenaries or VR as Ada doesn't need to be the solo focus on those) posts across all Resident Evil social media, Ada is only featured in half of them, and they just had to shoehorn Luis in because he had to have a bigger role this time around for some reason. Oh but he's not alone. Wesker is also being promoted instead of the main character, including in the actual LAUNCH TRAILER for the campaign because...? Why is this happening exactly???
Ada is one one of the most popular characters in the franchise yet she's being cast aside for a throwaway side character and a villain who had barely any screen time in the original game. Would Capcom do the same to Chris or Leon?
This coming after a witch hunt that ensued for days over Ada's new voice actress, whom Capcom did nothing to protect and even continued to work with one of the streamers who were part of instigating the flame war against Lilly Gao, does nothing but to sour the whole thing.
I'm sorry if you're mad I called Wesker ugly yesterday but I also honestly don't care, at all.
Dozens upon dozens of posts about how "Leon should date Claire / Chris / Luis / My OC / Me (seriously wtf) instead of that bitch Ada" or "Ada sucks" or "Ada doesn't deserve Leon, Leon would be much better off with someone like me (...y'all need help) I would make him truly happy" are infuriatingly tiring to go through on a daily basis. And no, Ada's self worth as a character shouldn't be focused on her, very canon and very mutual, romantic attraction towards Leon and THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT.
This is supposed to be Ada's moment, not as Leon's sidekick, not as an afterthought but as the protagonist and extra Luis and Wesker screen time, both of whom are dead and will never be seen again in the series, takes away A LOT from that. This is not needed. This is not appreciated. This would not happen if it was the other way around. Ada's DLC would sell without the extra Luis and Wesker fanservice. This is NOT ABOUT THEM.

(Ismaire here:) ~6 hr speed-paint, + 1.5 hrs to tweak for the second version.
I love Resident Evil. I won't go through my whole personal fan history or journey, but it's my favorite franchise. I've loved the Resi Remakes too. And like it seems a lot of people did, I absolutely loved the new Separate Ways.
And this is just a personal opinion, I'm not saying that anyone needs to agree - but I adore Lily Gao as Ada Wong.
Every actress who portrayed Ada before has their place in Resi history and I'm grateful for the work they did in the franchise, but I think Lily Gao did such a perfect, snappy, subtly multi-layered version of the mysterious mercenary I was familiar with.
I always loved Ada, so I say this with love and appreciation:
She's taken Ada from femme fatale spy stereotype to a fleshed-out individual, from an archetype to a complex woman who has her own ideals, feelings and struggles, and has to juggle them with the decisions that got her where she is now. Obviously the writing was great too, which played a huge part in setting up Lily Gao's acting to absolutely sing (at least to me).
She's a different Ada, for sure. Was I caught off-guard by her voice at first? You bet. She doesn't have the airy, playful, motherly (sometimes kind of condescending?) tone about her anymore - she's got things to do. She's as sharp and cunning as she is quietly compassionate. She's willing to cut off Albert Wesker mid-sentence, but she's just as willing to call Leon and tell him where to find Ashley. She feels like a merc who's had it rough and made her way by sheer hard work, not a model who gets out of bad spots by blowing kisses and tossing a perfectly timed grenade.
Now, I love over the top badassery, and I love how that was rehashed and still fit back into Ada's character. But she felt like a human first, and like those "glorious moments of awesome" came out of painstakingly honed skill, not absurdly sturdy plot armor.
What I stated here applies to a lot of things about the Resi remakes, of course - not just Ada. So much has been tweaked, amped, remixed, and so on. Ada is just maybe one of the most prominent parts of the remakes that made me really pause and go "oh my God, I can't believe how much I love this!"
I don't have a problem with the originals - I loved them (camp and all), grew up with them, etc. As a whole package, the series is just my jam and it would be hard to lose me as a fan. I even got used to first-person play so I could enjoy 7 and Village - they were awesome. (Bless you who already love first-person games. I... don't, haha.)
But back to Ada - I just thought this was the most well-rounded performance her character has ever gotten. Anyone else can read her any way they want to. She's fictional, let's all remember. But Lily Gao is not, and she now has my heart and my vote as a fan!

You heard about Ada Wong's new voice actress being harassed?
No, but after a cursory search on the subject, I can't say I'm really surprised.
Sounds like the usual doldrums of racism, and in specific, anti-Asian racism. Lily Gao (Welcome to Racoon City's Ada Wong), who might be the first Asian actress to actually voice act for Ada, isn't doing what I would call a "stilted" or even "horrible" job. I don't even think she's been given bad direction.
I like her performance better than the previous voice actor, Jolene Anderson (RE2R). For me, Ada just sounds like an incredibly guarded and controlled (or closed-off) woman. She's more "secret agent (dragon lady)" than a "sultry sexy secret agent (dragon lady)... in a red dress". She also doesn't have the same history (or romance) with Leon S. Kennedy, so, of course, her whole demeanor is going to be different.
(If I could complain about anyone, I feel like Leon's voice actor, Nick Apostolides, is doing his best to imitate RE4's Paul Mercier, something I've said about RE6's Paul Mercer as well.)
This is the video gaming community we're talking about, and specifically, the Resident Evil fandom - which has a pretty storied history of racism when it comes to the franchise's non-white characters (and actors). When Resident Evil 5 came out, one of the complaints lobbied at Sheva's voice actor (Karen Dyer) was that she was "awful" and "annoying".
The sticking point (or motivation behind) the harassment here is that I suspect that Gao is simply just not Sally Cahill (Ada Wong from RE2C to Darkside Chronicles). This was also something RE fandom gnashed their teeth about in the RE2 remake (which IIRC, used non-union actors).
Things also aren't helped by the fact that there's a pre-existing subset of [OG] RE4 die-hards that are against the remake on principle, so, of course, they're lashing out at the Asian actress.
The accessibility of actors on social media is the only thing different about Gao and Dyer's circumstances, and perhaps, the mainstream visibility of fandom itself. I can imagine Gao's harassment going under the radar or outright ignored if this happened in 2009.
I'm not all that interested in boiling this down to a moment of "fandom was a mistake", because this is a very specific behavior (racism) that extends beyond the chambers of gaming fandom and exists also in gaming media.
It sucks that Gao has to deal with this.
