you always hear folks lumping in gomens and ofmd, and i get why that is, but honestly in terms of queer media with similar themes, i feel like ofmd pairs much better with yuri on ice??

you got your living legend with the long silver hair, who has reached the absolute top of his field but sacrificed all meaningful human connection to get there, deeply depressed, lacking purpose and looking for a way out

you got your striver, trying to make his way and prove himself in this very competitive field but feels out of his depth, having the skills but lacking the confidence. you have him find the living legend at his lowest point, both of them agreeing to learn from each other, finding in the other what they lack and eventually, natch, falling in love

hell, you even have the grumpy, shouty lil friend who's known the living legend longer and is fucking furious he's throwing all his success away for this *nobody,* and who eventually just chills into being resignedly grumpy at both of the lovestruck dweebs but in a fun way this time

i can’t stop thinking about how the boys were set up to fail, and gretchen assessed their results as failure, but... they didn’t? they faced more extreme danger with the jaguar and overcame it as a group, they (mostly) peacefully overcame an act of violence and ejected the perpetrator from their group, they had their arguments and divided but then peacefully came together again. at the time they were rescued, there was the violence between raf and seth but everyone else was peaceful and fine. look at that frisbee scene. this was not a lord of the flies scenario at all.

and that’s in spite of everything. the boys had less wilderness experience than the girls. they had more internal conflict coming in. they faced more real danger, with the jaguar and especially with seth. but what amazes me is that so many of the choices they made, that we would assume they made out of fear or anger, they made out of kindness. the group ejected seth because they were trying to protect josh from his assaulter. they refused to discuss what happened on day 15 not because they were threatened or scared to but out of kindness to josh. the group divided because they were grappling over how much kindness they should show seth, and most of them left kirin and josh because they weren’t showing enough kindness. i’m just fascinated by this narrative where the boys were set up to fail, and they actually didn’t, because to everyone’s surprise they eventually chose kindness every time.

fucking love fanfiction. clicked on a work simply cause it seemed fun and now it's almost 3am and i'm losing my fucking mind cause it was so much more well thought out and a hell of a lot more layered than i expected it to be. the details added by the obvious research, the writing style, the character development, the dedication to the slowburn, it ticked all my boxes and yet going solely off the summary it wasn't even something i'd usually have tried to read in the first place. how the fuck.
