ANCIENT ART :
Sarcophagus of pakal (683 A.D.) the great King of Palenque.
Tumblr media
• The large carved stone sarcophagus lid in the Temple of Inscriptions is a unique piece of Classic Maya art. Around the edges of the lid is a band with cosmological signs for sun, moon, and star, as well as the heads of six named noblemen. The central image is that of a cruciform world tree. Beneath Pakal is one of the heads of a celestial two headed serpent. Both the king and the serpent head on which he rests are framed by the open jaws of a funerary serpent, a common iconographic device for signaling entrance into, or residence in, the realm(s) of the dead.
• Pakal, the great King of Palenque who had ruled for almost 70 years, died. Pakal's time had been one of great prosperity for his people, who honored him by entombing his body inside the Temple of the Inscriptions, a pyramid that Pakal himself had ordered built specifically to serve as his tomb. Pakal was buried in jade finery, including a beautiful death mask. Placed over Pakal's tomb was a massive sarcophagus stone, laboriously carved with an image of Pakal himself being reborn as a god.
• The Maya city of palenque had risen to greatness in the seventh century A.D., only to mysteriously go into decline. By 900 A.D. or so, the once-mighty city was largely abandoned and the local vegetation began to reclaim the ruins. In 1949, Mexican archaeologist Alberto Ruz Lhuillier began an investigation at the ruined Maya city, specifically at the Temple of the Inscriptions, one of the more imposing structures in the city. He found a stairway leading deep into the temple and followed it, carefully breaking down walls and removing rocks and debris as he did so. By 1952, he had reached the end of the passageway and found a magnificent tomb, which had been sealed off for more than a thousand years. There are many treasures and important work of art in Pakal's tomb, but perhaps the most striking was the massive carved stone that covered Pakal's body.
MEDIEVAL ART :
Christ of Mercy between the Prophets David and Jeremiah (between c. 1495 and c. 1500) by Diego de la Cruz
Tumblr media
• This devotional, eucharistic image was the central panel in the predella of an altarpiece. Christ is depicted as the Man of Sorrows with the crown of thorns and displaying the wounds of his Crucifixion. The texts on the scrolls refer to his Passion. The artist worked in Burgos, in northern Spain, and collaborated with Gil de Siloé, a sculpture by whom is shown in this room.
• Middle Ages paintings were rich with religious symbolism and imagery. Medieval artists and their paintings predominantly portrayed holy figures and biblical narratives. These narratives had a hierarchy, which was predominantly dictated by the spaces the paintings would occupy. The Medieval artwork that depicted scenes considered to be more important would occupy notable focal points in a church or altarpiece, whereas less significant scenes would radiate outwards.
• Diego de la Cruz was a Spanish painter who may have been of Flemish origin. He was active in Burgos and the neighboring region.His artistic personality is largely defined by two works: Cristo de Varón de Dolores entre la Virgen y San Juan, at the Museo del Prado; his only signed work, probably created between 1475-1480, and the Estigmatización de San Francisco de Asís at the Iglesia de San Esteban de Burgos (1487-1489). Based on an analysis of these works, it has been possible to make other attributions: notably, Cristo de Piedad entre dos ángeles at the Colegiata de Covarrubias , and the Cristo de Piedad entre los profetas David y Jeremías, the central tableau of the predella of an altarpiece and companion to two other tableaux (of the prophets Isaiah and Daniel) in the collection of the University of Liège, which have been attributed to the German painter, Hans Leonhard Schäufelein.
RENAISSANCE ART :
The Last Judgment by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1535–1541)
Tumblr media
• The painting is about the second coming of Jesus, the day when God shall judge all humanity. Michelangelo has painted Jesus in the center surrounded by saints. The top portion of the painting shows the resurrection of the dead to heaven and the bottom portion shows the descent of sinners into hell. The use of colors and excellent brushwork make this painting of the most revered painting in the world.
• The Last Judgement is the name of the fresco located on the wall behind the altar of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. It was designed and realized by the Renaissance master Michelangelo Buonarroti between 1533 and 1541. Michelangelo’s masterpiece was inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy and is mentioned by Dan Brown in his Inferno.
• Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of the High Renaissance. Born in the Republic of Florence, his work was inspired by models from classical antiquity and had a lasting influence on Western art. Michelangelo's creative abilities and mastery in a range of artistic arenas define him as an archetypal Renaissance man, along with his rival and elder contemporary, Leonardo da Vinci. Given the sheer volume of surviving correspondence, sketches, and reminiscences, Michelangelo is one of the best-documented artists of the 16th century. He was lauded by contemporary biographers as the most accomplished artist of his era.
MODERN ART :
Radiant Baby by Keith haring (1990)
Tumblr media
• Using chalk, he etched his signature designs onto the walls. One of these was his Radiant Baby, which to him was one of the purest and most positive human experiences. It became a recurring visual idiom of Haring’s throughout the years and is now considered the artist’s signature tag. The image represents a pure and positive experience of human existence and is symbolic of Haring’s hope for the future. Although Radiant Baby derives its origin from Christianity it has been used in many of Haring’s other works associated with racism, drug addiction, AIDS awareness and tolerance.
• Keith Allen Haring was an artist and social activist from Pennsylvania whose work was influenced by the New York City street culture and graffiti art of the 1980s. A 1997 Vanity Fair article states that "some of his most characteristic imagery involved figures twirling around and playing together, happy but never aimless." Since Haring's death from AIDS-related illness in 1990, images he created that speak about racism, drug addiction, AIDS awareness and tolerance have become iconic.
CONTEMPORARY ART :
Still face you by Njideka akunyili crosby (2015)
Tumblr media
• The artist, wearing a yellow dress, is seen with her husband (in the red shirt) and other family members gathered around a table in an interior. The artist has said that in this painting she was reimagining bringing her husband, a caucasian American whom she met at Swathmore, to Nigeria to meet her family for the first time. The stately rendering of her body in contrappasto evokes both classical sculpture and Old Master painting, The wholly blank expanse in sunshine yellow behind evokes the more contemporary world of abstract painting. The Xerox transfers from Nigerian magazines and from old and more recent family photographs line the walls, articulate the frame of the balcony and animate the patterned dresses worn by the other women present and the checkered upholstered chairs.
• Njideka Akunyili Crosby is a Nigerian-born visual artist working in Los Angeles, California. Through her art Akunyili Crosby "negotiates the cultural terrain between her adopted home in America and her native Nigeria, creating collage and photo transfer-based paintings that expose the challenges of occupying these two worlds". In 2017, Akunyili Crosby was awarded the prestigious Genius Grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
• When painted in pairs or groups, Akunyili Crosby’s figures rarely meet the viewer’s gaze. Instead, they seem bound up in moments of reflection left open to interpretation by the viewer. Akunyili Crosby’s subjects appear resigned and calm, showing few emotions. Her works render the characters’ mood more than any specific facial features. There is a balance between intimacy and longing, between pleasure and nostalgia.

PRLS 2105/Brooklyn College/Fall 2019
The Nuyorican Poets Café
The definition of a latino/a in the United States has changed overtime.  These changes can be attributed to initial situations, like that of a 1st generation immigrant in the late 1800′s to present day metamorphosis of precisely this word, Latinx.  It is a blending of the circumstances, and all others to follow, of the integration of multicultural and multi-artistic expressions of life as we experience it.  This plurality has led to much debate regarding the essence and “truism” of the Latinx experience and the entitlement that many may have attached to it, constricting its plurality to one essential meaning or fit, if you may.  But a one size fits all model is not the solution to such a complex sociological construction made up by a large variation of different thoughts and experiences that somehow merge together in a city like New York.  How can we measure the immensity of such an expression and feeling?  Platforms that allow for this expression sample and expose the high volume of variation and similarities within the Latinx community.  One of those platforms is the Nuyorican Poets Café.
The Nuyorican Poets Cafe was co founded by a group of people who shared, amongst other things, a love of expression.  Although these expressions were different in the sense that they originated based on the self experiences each artist put forth, it was the ultimate experience as a latino/a in New York City, that brought them together.  So these “encuentros” in the living room of a small apartment grew to such extent that the Nuyorican Poets Cafe was born out of a necessity  to “give voice to a diverse group of rising poets, actors, fimmakers and musicians.  The Cafe champions the use of poetry, jazz, theater, hip-hop and spoken word as means of social empowerment for minority and underprivileged artist”. (WEBSITE) In the short documentary of the Nuyorican Poets Café, Miguel Algarín, co-founder, recognized that the new generations have “recogido una necesidad oral de explicar quiénes son.”  He adds that the Café is not purely puertorican; instead, the puertorican culture that is sold has the kindness to include any other culture that wants to ”arrimarse”.  In essence, the Cafe offers the opportunity to discover the plurality of being, first and foremost, and any other branch(es) that come thereafter:  ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic, race, religion, language, culture, and politics. In the case of the co-founders, there existed a shared co experience; “El latino vivo en Nueva York”.  This shared experience facilitates “el espacio”, a space open to that sharing of common experiences.  That space (physical and non-physical) is crucial and alive in many of the works of these cofounders and others, such as Miguel Algarin’s contemplation of conversation in “HIV”as an example of a non-physical space.  Miguel Piñero’s Do Wop scene in the movie “Short Eyes” is an example of a physical space, specifically a jail space which opens the opportunity for sharing of cultural and artistic expressions of the African-American and Latino experience.  These two examples highlight the consequential purpose of the Nuyorican Poets Café; a mirror image of the outcome of such gatherings in such spaces.
This plurality of language, culture and the arts is obvious throughout the works of the artist who have used the Nuyorican Poets Café as a platform.  It is evident in Miguel Algarin’s poem “HIV”(1994) and “New Year’s Eve December 31st. 1975″. It is the ultimate expression of plurality of the Latinx community.  In these poems, Algarin expresses his reality as a New Yorker living within a time frame of health panic in the 80′s and 90′s as the AIDS epidemic was palpable.  It also reflects the Latino man in all of his machismo, living in a society where the norms and expectations often times do not leave room or make it difficult for self questioning and self discovery.  But he refers to a human experience of despair and reaction to the societal catastrophes that encompass this “being” and existence.  In his poem “HIV”, he plays with words such as revelation and revel, rebel and regret; all referencing the human interpretation of experience.  He defines language as a verb, “to tongue into sounds”.  This is an interpretation of the human experience, perhaps as an affirmation of an existence as opposed to a reaction of the need to explain latinidad.  Algarín re-introduces this oral need to communicate in his poem “New Year’s Eve” when he describes a man practically unable to use language and states “I'm overloaded crisis that results in nausea, asphyxiation and the swallowing of my tongue hay algo hay un epileptic fit trying to reduce me into a trembling mass of jellied nerves...”.  His works allude to being a Latino and New Yorker, not a Latino that happens to be in New York, referencing again the plurality of existence.
Sandra Maria Esteves also references the plurality of Latinidad as she recreates poetic images of life itself in this city, the recognition of New York serving as the stage for two worlds merged into one experience.  Using the platform of a child’s coming to be (birth), Esteves highlights the struggles that are put forth early on in this identity formation, “The meaning of war defined her. Gasping and innocent, before she knew her mother, before she discovered herself, barely alive”.  She also alludes to societal struggles, those which the child will have to prepare itself for, “The world did not want another brown, another slant-eyed-olive-indian-black-child...especially another rock-the-boat poet, another voice opened wide...”  The element of war, struggle, and fight to declare this identity is also evident in “Fighting demons” as the title suggests.  Esteves utilizes New York as an intersection/crossroad of all the elements that shape us as people.  It is the venue that allows us to go beyond barriers and borders.  In “Fighting demons”, she frames the question “What is the difference between here and there?” She subtly intertwines  roots and utilizes linguistic images to represent ancestry with reality, creating a new road map to existence and the similarities within that existence.
With a similar background, Miguel Piñero uses his existence, his reality to express Latinidad and its plurality.  His poems are bred with cultural aspects alive in his existence in New York, this place in between where he exists as he states in “Lower East Side”, “ I don't wanna be buried in Puerto Rico I don't wanna rest in Long Island Cemetery...don't take me far away keep me near by...the Lower East Side.”  Piñero makes reference to the varying dynamics of latinidad, his experience and New York, the element that perhaps shapes his experiences evermore.  In “Black Woman With The Blond Wig On”, he exposes the fine lines oftenly crossed in the intersections of diversity in New York and utilizes his reality to question the result of the behavior presented when he states “Think that head blanket... will make the residents of forest hills lay out a black carpet to their blond streets”.
In a very similar fashion, Peggy Robles-Alvarado utilizes her experience of New York to help illustrate or map the latino identity.  In her poem “Teeth”, Maria  de los Ángeles enters a state of latent dreams and she wrestles with her roots and her reality, the New York backdrop as she subtly includes words like “she has always preferred her city of asphalt...” to the cool mountain-side wind.  But she also explores other elements of her existence and just like Miguel Algarín and Miguel Piñero, expose their gender and at times its cultural definitions, questioning or confirming how it shapes their identity within the latinx and sociopolitical context. In the short video provided, “Plantando Banderas”, Robles-Alvarado expresses the power of the skirt, a teaching from her mother, which allows for empowerment and strength.  Both of these are abstract but she carefully integrates it into a physically existent power, a seemingly life-less skirt that almost wears her.  She uses words like “I know my place” and “Hija, your skirt can be your crutch or your soul...bridging your soul and determination”.
Overall, the art sampling provided and the backdrop of the Nuyorican Poets Café allowed for a broader examination of the circumstantial New York Latino and how it adds to the definition of being Latino.  Its useful addition of human experience allows for a universal Latino, one who recognizes the difference in experience but also embraces the elements that unite a people.

Adrian Alicea “Unorthodox Romance”
Apr 14, 2019 | Fashion, Featured, Flashbacks Adrian Alicea "Unorthodox Romance" By Sandra Escallón Designer Adrian Alicea has always been recognized for designing collections that are created out of the box. His designs are magical creations, masterpieces with features for those who are not afraid of taking risks. During New York Fashion Week, Alicea presented his fall/winter 2016-2017 collection named "Unorthodox Romance"  at the MIST Harlem Restaurant. The collection is inspired, as the artist told us, by the way New Yorkers dressed during the seventies and eighties, their elegance and the idea of romance. The evening started with a performance by Yut and The Hot Four, who brought a touch of energy by playing in an incredible way the electric violin. The runway opened with a black dress which has a Gothic and classic style at the same time. From that moment every piece of his collection was magic. Dark colors, hats, coats and dresses with huge hoods were symbol of elegance and sensuality. The makeup was inspired on monkeys, which gave a wild element to the show. Adrian Alicea closed the show fulfilling the expectations. His friends, who were part of the runway; his fans and those who saw his work for the very first time showed their admiration for his work. All the assistance applauded his work, and Alicea did not have words to express his happiness for all the love around the creation of “Unorthodox Romance” collection. . The alt-rock powerhouse band known as The Revivalists brought their high energy concert to the Vina Robles Amphitheatre on a chilly fall night, for the second to the last show of their 2019 “Take Good Care” tour. The show opened with a twilight set by Nashville blue-eyed soul singer Anderson East. The charismatic singer has even managed to capture the romantic attention of Miranda Lambert. The singer and his accomplished band of rock-infused musicians put on a stunning opening show. East belted out original Southern-tinged soul and blues tunes while the band wailed furiously behind him. The personable singer bantered with the crowd frequently and wandered into the crowd on several occasions. The extended opening set included several covers including, Willie Nelson’s “Somebody Pick Up My Pieces” and Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer.” The crowd huddled tightly together in the cold roared with approval.
As the darkness set in around the beautiful mountainside venue and stars twinkled in the crystal clear night sky, The Revivalists sauntered onto the stage, beaming broad smiles. The eight-piece group is a powerhouse jam band fronted by animated and energetic lead singer David Shaw. In addition to Shaw, the New Orleans group includes, Zack Feinberg on guitar, Andrew Campanelli on drums, George Gekas on bass, Ed Williams playing pedal steel guitar, Rob Ingraham on saxophone, Michael Girardot on keyboards and trumpet and PJ Howard also on drums and percussion. Shaw darted about the stage, seeming to make eye contact with most everyone in the audience. Throughout the show, he would shoot into the crowd and make his way all about the venue. The band tore through a nearly two-hour high energy set that had concert-goers singing and dancing until the final encore. The setlist included many of the tracks from 2018’s “Take Good Care” album. The Revivalists opened with a selection of mostly new material, including “When I’m With You,” “You Said It All,” “You and I,” “Change,” “Oh No,” and “All My Friends.” They also ended their main set with another song from the latest album, “Celebration.” The group also played some of their older well-known tunes, including songs from the 2015 album “Men Amongst Mountains” like “It Was A Sin,” and  “Catching Fireflies.”
After an extended standing ovation in the cold late night air, the band returned for a triumphant encore that stretched to four songs including, “Soulflight” from their self-titled debut EP from 2008. The group threw in a bit of Pink Floyd while playing their song “Wish I Knew You,” and they ended the evening with a brilliant take on The Rolling Stones, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”
The Vina Robles Amphitheatre, which may be the best outdoor concert venue in California, ended its 2019 season with Grammy, Tony, and Emmy award-nominated singer, songwriter, actress, and author Sara Bareilles on October 27, marking a record-breaking season. According to Nederlander concerts, “The venue experienced its best season to date, with 93% growth in ticket sales since opening in 2013.  The venue hosted over 65,000 fans, sold more than $4 million in ticket sales and presented 12 sellout concerts at the intimate outdoor venue.  World-renowned artists such as Willie Nelson and Family, Foreigner, Sublime with Rome, Kacey Musgraves, The Avett Brothers, Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band, Los Ángeles Azules, Social Distortion and Flogging Molly, Peter Frampton with Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening, Cole Swindell and Jason Mraz were among the sellout performances.
“This was a great season for Vina Robles Amphitheatre, and I am grateful to our incredible team.  We look forward to continued growth in the future with many more successful seasons for the fans and artists,” said Paul Leatherman, general manager at Vina Robles Amphitheatre.
In its seventh year of operation, the Vina Robles Amphitheatre has become one of the largest outdoor venues for arts and entertainment in San Luis Obispo County. The boutique amphitheater is nestled on a picturesque, oak-dotted hillside in Paso Robles on California’s Central Coast.  Owned and operated by Vina Robles Vineyards & Winery, Nederlander Concerts has exclusively programmed the venue since 2014.
“We are thrilled with our partnership at the Vina Robles Amphitheatre and are committed to bringing more diversity and live entertainment to the Central Coasts’ burgeoning music scene,” said Alex Hodges, CEO of Nederlander Concerts. “The venue’s staff and atmosphere have created a unique experience for artists and guests, which results in consistent growth year over year.”

Independence Day: Discover Freedom Again From Iceland To New York Digitally
Independence Day 2020: Discover Freedom Again By Travelling From Iceland To New York Digitally
Independence Day 2020: Virtual History of Freedom From Iceland to New York.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
India's 74th Day of Independence sees us at home because we always know about it and hope to be able to face freedom. While the lockdown has been opening up in stages in many urban communities in India, it despite everything remains exceptionally dangerous to do whatever we'd generally think about energizing. This year is tied in with settling, however, that shouldn't get you far from some astounding encounters you can at present have. We bring to you a couple of virtual encounters so fascinating, you'd overlook, if just for a couple of moments, that they're virtual. The best part? You can do all these from the solace and wellbeing of your home!
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
1. WindowSwap
When voyaging has been debilitated, WindowSwap transports you to another person's window with only a tick. From Florence to London, to Chennai, this hypnotizing site gives you a top into another person's regular perspectives. The windows are joined by relieving seems like the stirring of leaves, traffic cruising by, or, in case you're fortunate and gone over this window, the cheerful gasping of a canine strolling in a nursery. Window Swap is overly advantageous to limit and work close by, as well.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
We'd suggest looking at this in your work area however in case you're utilizing your telephone, do change to scene see. There are right now around 60 windows submitted from over the world, and you can present yours also.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
2. Drive and Listen
For those of us stuck in urban communities wherein any event, going for a drive is unsafe, here's a great site that lets you do only that – drive around the city and hear some out music. You can Drive and Listen from Barcelona, Los Ángeles, Istanbul, or even Mumbai all over your place, and you can drive any of the 40 urban communities on the map if you feel nostalgic for some traffic.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Interestingly, you can tune in to the nearby radio while on the 'drive', switch channels, and even control the speed of the vehicle. You can likewise decide to turn the road sounds on and off. On the off chance that you like this excursion and social visit understanding, you can download the application as well.
3. Looks like you need Iceland
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Of all the silly yet cool things to have been brought into the world this pandemic, lookslikeyouneediceland.com may be the most captivating. All you need to accomplish for this virtual experience is hold a catch and let out a shout, the account of which will be played in Iceland's huge, open spaces. You can even pick to get a chronicle of your shout being delivered in Iceland. As the site calls attention to, we've experienced a ton this year, and need an ideal spot to let out our dissatisfactions.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
It would appear that we need Iceland. We'd suggest shutting the site once you're finished with it – it's one thing to hear yourself shouting into the deep darkness, tuning in to outsiders do the equivalent can be a slight bit terrifying.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
4. The Hidden Worlds of the National Parks
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Google Arts and Culture is letting you take a look through the absolute best national parks in the USA, where you will go with guides clarifying the wonderful sights that come pressed with history. The Hidden Worlds of National Parks deliver only five distinctive encounters: Florida's Desert Tortugas, New Mexican Carlsbad Caverns, Utah's Bryce Canyon, Alaska's Kenai Fjords and Hawaiian Volcanoes.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Work area will likely give you an astonishing encounter, yet we by and by altogether appreciated utilizing our telephone as a door far off to the world. From remarkable plans of caverns to stars to dissolving icy masses, this is maybe the most amazing site on our rundown. Do utilize your headphones for an improved encounter.
