Louis has such an amazing writing style and his lyrics are always incredible but something I’ve always loved is the way he carries the same themes/ motifs throughout his writing. Even looking back on songs from 1D that he wrote on there are clear indicators that he wrote on it because of the themes, lyrics or style of the song often you can tell by the bridge too my man never misses with a bridge he constructs them like no other.
An example of motifs is his use of religious imagery or language in his songs.
‘There’s a devil in your smile that’s chasing me’ // the priest thinks it’s the devil’ // ‘it’s a church of burnt romances’ // ‘im too far gone to pray’ // ‘the devil in my brain’ // ‘demons, I’m taking all of my demons’ - it’s interesting how this is a consistent theme and there’s phew so much to unpack in these songs and their connotations themselves but the lyrics are so emotive. As someone who has a religious background the use of religious imagery is actually something I love because it’s something I pick up on quite quickly. Louis often talks about ‘the devil’ a devil or demon is a crafty creature a ‘fallen angel’ a trickster his use of talking to someone and saying ‘there’s a devil in your smile’ is almost him saying ‘I’m gonna regret this but you’re so tempting and I can’t escape you, I also don’t want to’
‘The priest thinks it’s the devil’ in End of the day Louis is demonstrating loving someone, you can’t help but love that person there’s no escape again linking back to ‘the devil in your smile that’s chasing me’ not to mention the religious trauma that comes along with this line, ‘the priest’ thinks you’re sick your possessed and incurable, because you can’t in fact change who you love. This then links to ‘the devil in my brain’ now remember how in End of the day Louis was being told he was possessed well here’s Louis acknowledging this ‘demon’ he hears the demon in his head this incurable part of him he can’t escape and he can’t help but to listen to this demon because he can’t help who he is as he addresses in End of the day. In Only the brave (which is a song full of queer connotation and religious trauma and imagery) Louis again addresses how he’s ‘too far gone to pray’ how this ‘church of struggles of romances that have burnt to bright but then been put out too soon’ makes him feel like he couldn’t possibly pray he is a possessed man remember the priest has told him that he is wrong, this song addresses the deep trauma of coming to accept how hard it is to love so honestly ‘I’m breaking my own rules’, he’s going against what he’s always been told and therefore something he’s always allowed himself to believe but he is learning to be himself and accept himself because at the End of the day, love is only for the brave. But finally after all this questioning after being told he’s sick, being told he has a devil in him he finally in Out of my System finally sheds off these traumas finally learns to accept who he is ‘Demons, I’m taking all of my demons’ he’s collecting the parts of him that he’s been told are wrong the parts he should hate the ‘devil in his brain’ but he’s ‘putting them where he can’t see them’ because he doesn’t need them anymore he doesn’t want to listen to this trauma because he’s grown from that, he’s getting it Out of his system because he’s finally accepted who he is and he’s being true to himself.
There’s a lot of dark connotations to religious lyricism and the guilt that shines through is prevalent this theme carries through so much of his song writing and it’s truly beautiful like I could truly go on about it (but I won’t I promise). There are countless examples of other motifs and ideas he uses in his lyricism but this is one I’ve never truly seen get truly addressed and it’s in my opinion one of his deepest and most painful themes because of the trauma that comes through the terrifying feeling of trying to be yourself of learning to accept yourself and honestly you don’t even need to look too hard to hear and see the queer connotations that cover such a theme.

Please share your analysis of all this time
All This Time is Gay™️
Ok, joking apart, for me, it's the song with the strongest queer subtext on the album. It's not as easy to interpret as OTB was on Walls. The song also fits other interpretations in line with the general themes of the albums (love, friendship, hope, growth). As usual there are no right or wrong answers, but here are some of my thoughts.
I don't have much to say about the first verse, except that 'I'm tryna find the words to say for ages' is reminescent of Defenseless.
Now onto the pre-chorus.... I'll be honest those lyrics are the most mysterious on the whole album for me.
And I keep on building mountains hoping that they'll turn to gold
I'm not sure I understand the metaphor. But the image that I get are mountains are obstacles; he's doing something that he knows will be difficult. He keeps hoping the mountains will turn to gold, meaning some sort of miracle will not only make the obstacle/hardship disappear, but it will turn into a treasure, into something that one only hopes for. In short, he's a hopeless romantic and hasn't given up on the idea of love. But that love is not easy to find/reach.
But the truth is, I still doubt that what I do can get me home
Even with all his hopes and ideals, he's not sure that he will succeed, that it will be enough. The concept of home here is interesting - home as in the place where you are truly yourself, the place where you belong, the place that you usually share with the person/people you love. He's not sure he'll ever make it home, no matter how much he tries - tying in again the idea of external obstacles, that love, loving and being loved are not easy.
When it gets cold / Oh, sometimes, sometimes, I lose my hope
When it gets cold, when you're alone, you lose your hope. You wonder if you'll ever find someone to love and who will love you back. Again with the idea that love is hard thing to find.
Our eyes meet / And I can tell that you're the same as me / It's the way we / It's the way we see ourselves through walls of trees
This verse has the strongest queer subtext because it's just... obvious. You're in a room full of people and you see one person who is just like you. It's the way we always recognize people like us, through the crowd. He's not alone.
And you keep on building mountains hoping that they'll turn to gold / But the truth is, you still doubt that what you do can get you home
The verse is repeated but the subject changes from the narrator (I) to his interlocutor (you). Thus saying the other person is in the same situation as he his. The experience is shared, universal.
But the friends we make, the love it takes / It's worth, it's worth, it's worth the pain The friends we make, the love it takes / It's worth, it's worth, it's worth it all this time
No matter how painful the experience is, it's worth it for the friendships (community); the love it takes to be truly yourself, to love who you wanna love, it's worth it; all this time you're doubting, feeling lonely, hopeless, it's worth it in the end and you should not give up.
TLDR: love is only for the brave

Something that continues to rip me apart is Louis and the recurring, consistent theme of "too young" in his lyrics. Not just because it automatically points to Harry (and you can't tell me it's about E when she has the personality of a cardboard). But because there's such melancholic reflection, empathy for their younger selves.
"we were too young, to know we had everything, too young, I wish I could've seen it all along"- too young
"I wish I met you later, we're young and I was so naive, but in my head that's how it had to be"- all along
"oh god, what I could've become, don't know why they put all of it on us when we're so young"- we made it
"maybe they were right, when they said that we were too young"- fitf song (face the music?)
In some places it's almost like regret, that they were so young. But in most other places, and no matter what, there's so much love in it. It tells you of a love that's truly gone through trial after trial, that wasn't easy, that they fought for. That is still worth it. It's just a lot for me to think about.

drop your favorite lyric from each fitf song and let us see if you have taste or not!
Thanks @faithinlouisfuture, @polaroidplanets and @fruitylouis for the tag ily ♥ (look at me begging to be tagged and still doing this three days later..... anyway).
The Greatest
Back dancin' in the dark Back to the very start Findin' pieces that can fit Making up for what we missed
I see this song as being about us and I don't think I'll ever see it in a different way. He had a plan, COVID ruined it, we disappeared for a while... but when together again we're the greatest! With this lot behind me, I need you, you need me... So at the end of the day, it's back to the start, trying to make up for the missed opportunities but doing it together ♥
(You can disagree just know you won't change my mind)
2. Written all over your face
It's hard enough to get you sober Got no chance if I'm hungover I ain't even woken up yet Not nearly vertical All I know is I'm in trouble 'Cause the atmosphere's so cold, so
I'm horny, you're horny. We're all horny. Louis is not nearly vertical, but I volunteer to be horizontal with him.
3. Bigger Than Me
So come on, call me "liar" Yeah, you're so quick to judge
We are quick to judge. We did get Change studio version after all. It was in the album.
4. Lucky Again
'Cause I'm a hard man to lose But I figured it out, then made my way back To a life I would choose
I'm not the biggest fan of this song's lyrics. We don't vibe. But since I interpreted this line as introspective and like losing yourself inside of your head and then having to figure yourself out again... I'm going with this.
5. Face the music
Close your eyes and count to ten If you're standin' on the edge of fallin' Open up and looking down Everything that matters is forgotten
Do I know what he's saying? Not really. Do I think that he snaps? Yes. Absolutely. Probably something along the lines of take a deep breath and your fears/anxieties will disappear for a moment so you can enjoy here and now? Can't relate.
6. Chicago
Just because it didn't work doesn't mean it's meaningless to me
I think the idea is cute. You don't have to hate your exes (and even if this is about old friends written with a romantic tone, same goes, just because you and a friend are not speaking anymore it doesn't mean your friendship was less valid).
7. All This Time
When it gets cold Oh, sometimes, sometimes, you lose your hope But the friends we make, the love it takes It's worth, it's worth, it's worth the pain The friends we make, the love it takes It's worth, it's worth, it's worth it all this time
This could be about life in general and it would still break me to pieces but i feel like this is about art. About creating something, about pouring your heart (the love it takes) into a dream... and even if it's hard, it's worth it.
8. Out Of My System
With me, I know you wanna come with me Take anything you can carry And leave everythin' else behind
First of all, yes. But also, we're heading to a disaster because that's who we are so why not stick together.
9. Headline
So fast to judge in error, you thought you knew me better
Pretty straight-forward, but yeah. I really like the meaning of this song bc I feel like it can be understood as both "you used to know me really well and you stopped trying" or as "you never bothered and always stuck to this super stereotyped, first look (headline) idea of me in your brain" and both situations it's always the other person fault so... yes. Growth. Not taking the blame.
10. Saturdays
Somethin' about the way The light catches the mirror in my brain It gives me shade
This is very poetic. Pretty words. Very deep on the introspective side again, how you see your actions reflected on your head.
11. Silver Tongues
I love all the things you know
It's been so hard to pick just one ;;__;; I love, love, love Silver Tongues so much. I adore the fact that there're songs in this album that are so clearly about platonic love and friendship and community and ♥… Okay, clearly I need to ramble about this song on a post of it's own. For me this is what love is about TALK TO ME FOR HOURS ABOUT SHOWS I HAVEN'T SEEN AND VIDEOGAMES I'LL NEVER PLAY AND YOUR FAVORITE SCIENTIFIC THEORY AND I'LL LISTEN. BECAUSE IT MAKES YOU HAPPY!
12. She is beauty we are world class
Conversation is currency Shapes become a language Square eyes and sunglasses Finding faces in the trees Fabricated fairytales Bring a new world to life Sit down, sit down in the space and time
I think this is the time and place to admit I've never been high. Never tried dr*gs, not even we*d. So I don't think I get this song. I don't see what he sees. That being said, the lyricism is starting to grow on me. Floating or whatever.
13. Common People
Common people, not who you know Just how far you're willin' to go If you act like you're one of us Just act like you're one of us
I know I'm about to be jumped for this... this is a sweet song. But a little on the corny, christian rock/country side of the music genre spectrum. I don't know, again, that sense of belonging and community and togetherness I mentioned before.
14. Angels Fly
You'll be okay, we can talk tomorrow I'm on my way with some time to borrow
Some days (most days) you just need Louis Tomlinson to tell you that you'll be okay.
15. Paradise
Lately, lately it's been so easy To see my life completed Instead of half way full
Can't relate. But I'm manifesting. Wish that was me. Like to recast or however that works. The fact that the song that screams Faith in the Future the most is not on the actual album......
16. Holding on to Heartache
There's endless versions of the thing That keeps me driftin' back to darkness
I exercised inhuman levels of restrain by not posting the whole song. This line makes me so sad but it's also so easy to connect with.
17. That's the way love goes
When it cuts you, when you bleed That's when you're feelin' it the most That's the way, that's the way love goes
Ain't this true for every part of life too?? When the feelings are negative they almost drown you, hurt you physically too, they're more intense.
18. High in California
I could just roll the windows down Let the golden hour wash through the room
This song just makes me feels so relaxed, life is easy, there're no problems just sit in the sun and enjoy. I love it.
Tagging: If you wanna do this consider yourself tagged ♥

The Greatest
Your face reminded me of a love you cannot hide
WAOYF
When we're finished saying nothing
SAYING. NOTHING. !!!!!! He's a genius
Bigger Than Me
I didn't read the signs Walkin' different lines I know I took a left Tryna make it right
I love the play of words with left and right. It's clever!
Lucky Again
You give and give until it's gone away
Face The Music
I don't wanna face the music, but I still wanna dance with you
Explanation here.
Chicago
Just because it didn't work doesn't mean it's meaningless to me It just wasn't meant to be
This is so simple, so direct, so hearbreaking. I love the repetitive use of the negative. He could've said "it didn't work but it was meaningful to me". But he said it wasn't meaningless. It had meaning even if it didn't work. Chicago has so many layers and interpretations, it's driving me insane. But I'm happy with the mystery. But it's so fkg sad :(.
All This Time
It's late now I'm tryna find the words to say for ages Just have patience It's not how you spend the time, it's if you waste it
Love the reference to Defenceless and the image of wasting time when thinking about the theme of change on the album.
And I keep on building mountains hoping that they'll turn to gold
I have no idea what this line means but it's beautiful.
Out Of My System
Slowly, I never wanna go slowly I only wanna go faster Towards disaster every time With me, I know you wanna come with me Take anything you can carry And leave everythin' else behind
Headline
Sometimes, I wake up and I hear you through the silence
Someone needs to make a compilation of Louis writing about silence and not finding the words to express himself
Saturdays
I'm gazin' at the floor Somebody's got your trainers on The ones that you wore When you walked out the door
I'm starin' at the door Somebody's got your trainers on The ones that you wore But you're not here anymore
I LOVE the repetition of this verse with the changes. I think it's some of my favourite lyrics of the album because it's so simple but relatable. He uses a simple object to bring up the image of the break up (walking out the door) and then uses that word again in the moment (starin' at the door) and conjuring the image of absence (you're not here anymore). You're not here anymore and you will never be here again. All of this from a stupid pair of SHOES he's insane. (And if I say: 'And all that's left of us is a cupboard full of clothes').
Silver Tongues
You said grass was a dirty drug You like to preach with a vodka in your mug
Louis writing this and Alex Turner writing 'Whilst wondering if your mother ever think of me' are the best things that happened to the world of lyrics in 2022. Kings of shade.
SIBWAWC
Surrounded by light, surrounded by light
TBHC I don't know any of the lyrics to this song, I'm just no thought just vibes! And this part has the greatest vibes!
Common People
I came from a good home A house full of terrace dreams That was enough for me
Angels Fly
I'm on my way with some time to borrow
Holding On To Heartache
I still have dreams about it The moments as they came The moments never shown to us Because we faded into darkness
I can still hear your silence I can still hear a clock that's tickin'
Nothing's ever easy To be honest, I'm not easy on myself
That's The Way Love Goes
Remember when you told me I should give it time? Well, here's the chance for you to take your own advice
The reference to Miss You!
