Everyone lives all is well modern AU with TAOPP?! I’m giving them all favorite MLP characters fight me.

Jason would LOVE Apple Jack because she’s dedicated to Apple Acres. He can relate to overworking yourself and refusing help. But he phrases it as her just being really dedicated to her job and independent.

Louis adores Rarity and her personality. It’s even better she has AMAZING fashion. He will justify her faults and her actions; “I mean, don’t you want gems and diamonds too?” & “I’d do the same!” He hates the episode where all of the mane six didn’t like the dresses she made them.

Maya likes Rainbow Dash. She envy’s how bold and hot headed she is. But likes how she’s caring and still a good friend. She finds Rainbow confident and proud, and Maya wishes she could be like that, along with being with Maddox openly. While she doesn’t want to be queen, and doesn’t find herself all that happy being princess, she still would like a reality where she could be a known royal and open like that.

Maddox finds themselves relating a little too much to Princess Luna. They watched the Halloween episode and had a crisis. Being feared? Rumors and tales made about them? People actively avoiding them? Practically no one knowing the real them? This sounds familiar… They will deny it with all their heart though. Princess Luna is just their favorite because she’s a pretty, dark, and interesting character!!!!

Rowan likes Sunset Shimmer. He will NEVER admit he likes MLP. But he likes the running away plot and feels like she’d kinda hate being wrapped in Equestrian stuff again. If someone asks him he won’t say he wants to run away like her but he will say that he likes the fact she was against Equestria at first. He likes the way that unlike Twilight, she kinda goes along with what’s happening instead of planning everything. He bonds with Maddox on how the both of them relate to Sunset, but they will be the ONLY person who knows he likes that stupid pony show of course.

Taopp Maya and Rowan analysis

It’s interesting to see how similar the two of them are, seemingly being foils to one another. If you look at their differences and similarities you can see why Maya gets away and is able to have a life with Maddox while Rowan dies in the end.

The biggest differences are patience and willingness to work within the system.

Maya is apparently a couple years older than Rowan, I think I saw that in an ask, and hasn’t had the luxury of being able to indulge in pure hedonism like Rowan has. She has to be more careful with her moves, like playing a game of chess delicately. Rowan koolaid mans his way through every problem, he needs Louis to help him strategize. He doesn’t have the same life experience Maya had. They’re both scheming opportunists who take full advantage of whatever tools that are at their disposal, Rowan tends to use a hammer for every issue while Maya is more considerate of the consequences and what can be done.

Maya and Rowan are both fully ready to kill and throw Jason under the bus to get what they want, actually forget throwing him under the bus, those two were doing donuts over him. Maya wasn’t even the one to suggest Rowan pardoning him, she was just going to get him potentially killed. They both grew up in an environment where brutal tactics were encouraged, Maya doesn’t even bat an eye at her father having murdered the old queen, excusing it as a necessary sacrifice. You can see how similar they are with how they interact, Maya dropping every semblance of polite princess and just swearing like a sailor while calling Rowan a dumbass. Their homicidal plans just bounce off each other with ease, their father’s brutal tendencies showing. They are able to balance out the things holding each other back, Maya gaining Rowan’s willingness to do what it takes, while Rowan’s plan takes deep consideration of court politics with Maya’s knowledge.

They both inherited some of their father’s worst traits, particularly the murdery bits. Their better parts come out cause of their respective partners, Maddox and Louis are both good natured, and you can see how they change Maya and Rowan. Maya is willing to give up all the potential power that being queen gives to he with Maddox, while Rowan is willing to do good for the sake of Louis. Even when jealous and spiteful, Rowan goes to beg for Jason’s life because he know Louis loves him. In the end, Maya is right, palace antics kill his good. Rowan becomes too much like his father, a violent, jealous, drunkard, and Maddox has to put him down.

There’s a few other parallels between the two you can see, particularly with queerness and gender presentation. Rowan is more feminine than a what is considered traditional, wearing makeup, having a relationship with the courtier, wearing flowing black garb. Maya is envious of Rowan, wants to be able to get out of her assigned gender roles, have a relationship with the Maddox openly, not be stuck in palace politics.

In abusive households there can often times form a golden child vs scapegoat dynamic, the golden child is the prize that the parent adores while the scapegoat does everything wrong. Maya was restricted by the king’s desires to groom her into the perfect queen, while everything Rowan does is the worst possible thing to ever happen to the kingdom. It creates resentment between the two, Maya wants the freedom that Rowan has while Rowan wants the favoritism that Maya has. If Maya wasn’t the favorite then maybe Rowan’s mother would still be alive. There’s a phrase that comes to mind, the grass is greener on the other side because it’s fertilized with bullshit.

It’s clear that Maya is the king’s favorite, the king willing to kill Rowan while going into extended mourning when Maya supposedly dies. They’re standoffish with one another cause they think that the other is just like their father, but the two can get along when working for a shared goal. Maya sees the good in her brother, and is right that the palace corrupts whatever good is left.

When Maya leaves she can see the parts of her father that are evil, seeing how restrictive her father was, and how all his supposed fatherly love was just control. She can’t even bring herself to care for her father’s death.

Rowan and Maya are the two sides of the same coin, but end up in different places due to just having some differences in upbringing and partner. Maybe they’d be on opposites side of the story in the end if they’d been raised differently, but as it stands, Rowan dies from his worst traits taking over. He didn’t take the chance to leave when Maya offered it, his blood lust and lust/love for Louis being too much.

hihi!!! im here to ask another question.

do you think/know if any of the the art of pleasing princes are neurodivergent? because me and my friend both see Jason as autistic with his love for birds. in lots of scenes, you can see him infodumping about birds, which is a common trait of autism. ever since i first watched taopp, i’ve seen Jason as autistic, but i cant fully confirm it without your input.

This one is fun! I definitely thought about Jason being autistic when I wrote him, though it isn't explicitly stated in the script (I dunno how it would be, in a mideval fantasy setting!). He very intentionally has a locus of traits that many autistic people share. (Alas people often get this kind of answer when we're asked to "confirm" or "deny" fan theories- I believe there's often no right or wrong answer to these kinds of questions, unless the work itself engages with them explicitly (e.g. race and characters in Adamandi, sexuality and certain characters in Princes.) There's only different lenses and readings of a work that can illuminate something deeper about the themes and characters within!)

His special interest being birds is a very accurate reading of him! I also think that reading Jason through an autistic lens illuminates the theme of everyone in Princes having very different expressions of love. In his relationship to Maya, Jason is following a social script, a set of performative actions he knows indicate the presence of an emotion, and confuses this for genuinely feeling that emotion. His difficulty relating to the people around him in the first act is overcome by Louis showing interest in what Jason is interested in- and through that, Louis showing that he is interested in Jason.

It also puts a more devastating spin on I Don't Know; Maya's exuberance at falling in love and use of their relationship as a contrast accidentally hurts Jason because it makes him believe he can't fall in love. One of my autistic friends said to me that they were always afraid they would never find love because they didn't feel instinctual empathy in the same way that other people did, and while I drew on my own experiences discovering I was attracted to men instead of asexual to write "I Don't Know," I also thought about how my friend's fear is contained within those lyrics: the fear that everyone else seems to know something you don't. Jason's terseness in social situations being mistaken for malice, as well as Rowan's interpretation of Jason's bird tangents as rude and unwelcome, is another sadly resonant experience for autistic people, and when I was writing his arc with this in mind I wanted to emphasize Louis' love for Jason in the second act being because of these qualities, not in spite of them.
