byakuya togami is someone who suffered through a competition that didn't recognize family ties or status, and so in the events of thh he believes he exists as a being outside of the game - not that he thinks he's not a participant, but he's more like someone who is above all the others. someone who's seen this scenario before and knows how it goes, and can know the characters well enough to predict all the plot twists. his actions of chapter 2 are exactly for the reason he said; to make things more interesting, to purposely throw a wrench into the investigation and raise the stakes for everyone, himself included, because he is someone who exists outside the spheres of existence for all these people. he never doubted that he wouldn't have been able to save himself at the end of it, because the characters - as bumbling as they were - would have figured it out. he can manipulate the corpse because it is a doll to him, because chihiro was never a 'real' person in his eyes. and neither was anyone else.

(even kyoko and makoto were characters, albeit annoying, observant ones. the ones that looked out of the pages and back at the reader, that you can't help but see parts of yourself in, flaws and all, until they look back at you and point out all the flaws you never noticed in yourself. they're always surprising him, being unpredictable, and it makes this game feel less like a contrived theater play and more like a real competition).

what chapter 4 does is it destroys those conceptions. aoi literally slaps him into reality, because she should have been just another character beneath him, outside of his realm of existence, someone who never should have been able to even dream of interacting with him in such away. he can really get hurt here. he doesn't get shaken up by it, but it irks him. he thinks he knows everything about everyone involved, because for his life up until that point, he's had to learn and know, had to roughly understand the thoughts and drives of the common masses so they can be manipulated and the beliefs and motives of people like him so he could outdo his siblings.

but then during the trial, he gets surprised, he gets proven wrong, and he doesn't understand, and it needs to be explained to him by someone he previously considered lesser. because despite everything that he's done and accomplished, he has never tried to understand the meaning of human connection and just how far people might be willing to go for the sake of those bonds - and without that understanding, he is no better than any of the others around him.

anyway Lizzy showing up to Pemberley is SO !!! GOOD !!!!!!! for 101 reasons but in large part because it’s the first time she sees him post letter but actually at this point she IS afraid of how (justly) angry and cold he could be towards her and he’s so quietly delighted to have the chance to prove otherwise to her

#and it has to be through the slow and subtle signs of manners that he proves it #it has to be the brick building type of work #It is no time for displays of emotion or declarations of love or even pining gazes #it’s winning her trust through the step-by-step of good and thoughtful manners #and it makes her feel so safe!!!!!!!!! #okay so like. she IS afraid of him but not of his personality #she is afraid of their circumstances and he walks her through them with so much love and restraint #it’s so powerful #Anyway this is why it doesn’t work to substitute all of those actions for Darcy chasing Lizzy out of the house and saying ‘I know’ #when she says she likes long walks! no matter how romantic that moment might be in total isolation #I need to go teach and stop talking about this

Necessity was the only reason he allowed another’s hands to touch upon his proud mane, having nothing to brush with aside from his own large fingers. The task would get done but it would take longer than letting someone else with daintier hands comb through with a finer precision that wasn’t locked to simply feeling where the tangles pulled at his scalp. Laying down on his stomach, his chin settled itself over his forearms in disgruntled silence. The first few strokes were something to get used to as foreign fingers brushed through and gently began to work the knots that had long been irritating him for a while. In spite of the carefulness, it wasn’t entirely needed with how strong Saiyan hair is but he supposed an Earthling wouldn’t know much. Thick, coarse locks of hair parted between fingers, coaxing a certain easement that wasn’t anticipated as steely eyes slowly closed.

Broly’s breaths took longer to respire, unwitting to how relaxed he became as Tater continued and even rubbed at his scalp without so much as a single fang bared. Brushing, smoothing, repetition.. the feeling of his hair being played with earned a small creak of an eye, watching the way those dexterous fingers wove thick tresses with a certain enjoyment scrawled over Tater’s face. The addition of a hum held his attention as he listened to its tune, a low purr beginning to rumble as those hands resumed brushing through his hair. Starting at the roots, a long sigh exhaled once he felt digits rub into muscle, moving around to further lull him into a lazy state.

“ ... Why are you doing that? ” He muttered, never once asking her to soothe the tension around the area she decided to work over.
