I don’t typically like when star trek characters reference legacy characters just to talk about how great and perfect they are but I do like this route where even though Tuvok calls him a great visionary in the end he brings Spock up to say he argued with him. I think this is the way of the future. Lean in. Star Trek characters should say things like ‘An old man cut me off in space traffic the other day. I think it was McCoy?’ and another should nod and shake their head like he’s always doing that shit

Starter for @wcrpbubble
A gentle breeze sailed past and stirred the canopy of leaves overhead, causing the shadows to temporarily shift until they settled in a tentative state of equilibrium. The high temperature and the blistering sun, presently positioned at its zenith, were reminiscent of his home planet, and for a moment, his mind drifted, rousing recollections of his family. However, he was promptly yanked out of his evocations when the readings on the small display of his tricorder indicated a most peculiar inconsistency. Quietly, he Vulcan separated himself from the rest of away team and ventured toward the edge of a line of exotic trees, wading through the lush undergrowth.
Tumblr media
As he drew nearer to the location where the readings seemed to be emanating from, he was greeted by a fetid stench. Cautiously, he proceeded and circled the trunk, discerning a burrow of sorts directly underneath the gnarled roots of the tree, spacious enough to fit a grown human being... which was precisely what it contained. Tuvok stopped dead in his tracks at this nauseating revelation and holstered the tricorder.
'Is something the matter, Mister Vulcan?'
Neelix... The Taxalian hybrid had taken the liberty to pursue him — typical. Tuvok opted to disregard him; his primary concern was to apprise Captain Janeway of this most unusual discovery.
'Captain, this cadaver might be of particular interest to you,' the Vulcan enunciated stoically, while he patiently awaited her company, continuing to ignore Neelix' nonsensical vocalisations.
In the intervening time, he subjected the putrefying remains to a minute analysis — from a distance —, even though a rigorous examination was not required, for he well-acquainted with the gruesomely mutilated corpse. When the Captain was but a couple of metres away, he inclined his head to indicate the object of his disquietude.
'It appears you have visited this planet before...'

neelix is quite possibly the most innocent and friendly and non offending star trek character ever written to say you dislike him is to say you have no heart or regard for happiness or joy or love in this world. im only on the start of season 5 though so if he becomes a war criminal or some shit im sorry

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @geneeste. :) i may have done this one before, but tumblr blog search was traditionally unhelpful and i have several very important things i should be doing, so here we are <3
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 219
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 655,471
3. What fandoms do you write for?
stargate atlantis is the runaway lead, then sg-1, 90s/00s treks, the x-files, and a grab bag of other things. only two fics so far for m*a*s*h but the forecast looks good!
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
no sooner met (star trek voyager, j/c, eight years of friends-to-lovers in 5k or less)
career day (stargate sg-1, clone!sam/jack, damn that sure was a choice to go back to high school amirite)
next chapter (the good place, chidi/eleanor, the intimacy of reading)
first date (star trek voyager, j/c, falling in love again)
occupational hazards (the good place, chidi/eleanor, eleanor would rather not be the architect)
5. Do you respond to comments?
eventually!!!! i tend to keep nice ones on my home page for a while to cheer me up and then sometimes they get buried. i wake up nights like "damn the good place fandom really went all out with amazing comments on that random fic in like 2018 and i never replied," so maybe i need to go through my inbox and belatedly clear my cosmic debts.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
twilight (stargate atlantis, sheppard/weir, what if john didn't break the cycle). strong on style but real weak on comfort.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
weaving loose ends (stargate sg-1, sam/jack) ends with a wedding! in twenty years of writing romance fic, that has maybe only happened once?
8. Do you get hate on fics?
not yet! but the year is young.
a fic of mine did cause a dramatic fandom schism once, in the dancing with the stars fandom no less. a splinter fan group created in exile! a mod claiming to be personal friends with the stars! everybody storming out and then blocking each other! so my fic did cause hate, but somehow i personally escaped unscathed. i didn't even get blocked. (lesson: in some spaces, rpf is encouraged until They Fuck. second lesson: if you start a fire and then stay very quiet, everyone forgets about you.)
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
i do!! i guess!! but i'm struggling with it right now and it's giving me a complex. and "what kind" is like......... vanilla het fic for the most part tbh. gauzy curtain vibes, even. basically, i have to really sit and think about whether to rate something M or E, you know?
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
nope!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
nope!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes, but not since the x-files days. rip geocities webrings we salute you for your years of service.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
no, but i think i'd like to! passing chapters back and forth sleepover style like "haha write your way out of THIS" would be fun. (or collaborating in a more mundane way, i guess....)
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
john sheppard/elizabeth weir (stargate atlantis). first fic in the tag and i'm still fuckin there. three years on tv and a lifetime in my goddamn brain.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
realistically, i'm feeling pretty down on the chances that i'll ever finish ANY wip that's longer than 20k, but the two long ones withering on the vine that i'd like to finish are a sam/jack sg1 episodic soulmate fic and "what if janeway went undercover with the maquis instead of tuvok: the novel."
16. What are your writing strengths?
stealing one of geneeste's answers because "character complexity" is a good one! i don't feel satisfied with any fic unless i feel like i have learned something new about a character, or highlighted it in a new way.
my more specific strength, according to @coraclavia, is missing-scene fics that weave through an entire series canon to make a thesis statement (they are In Love).
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
😭 i can't write anything long 😭 i really wish i were different 😭 i envy those of you with staying power who can return to a story after going to work or writing something else and keep plugging away at it. i used to write sprawling things when i was a teen, but since becoming Adult With Job now many years ago, i've totally lost that skill!!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
haaaahahahaha. talk about a weakness. i literally couldn't bring myself to write a fic that required dialogue in Ancient from stargate, a language that -- i cannot stress this enough -- is not even real. i'm like "well maybe i'll study latin for three years and then analyze all the episodes where they speak it to reverse engineer the differences so i can write the bastardized space latin correctly" GIRL WHY. JUST FUCK IT UP.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
first completed story that i recall would have been star trek voyager in my early teens, and by the grace of rural internet and some kind of prescient sense of self-preservation, it does not live online. first internet-published fic was several years later, for the x-files. for better or worse, that one can still be found.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
i think pieces (stargate atlantis, sheppard/weir, catharsis through sex pollen) might be the new best, and i had a lot of fun writing erasers on pencils (stargate sg-1, clone!sam/jack, catharsis through truancy).
--
i am sure many of my fic-writer-meme friends have done this already but @ussjellyfish if your answers have changed since whenever you did it last; i'd love to hear how @havocthecat, @anretc, and @coraclavia would answer this; and blowing dandelion meme seeds over the fence to the mash fandom: @remyfire!

🎉🎉Star Trek Sunday 🎉🎉 every sunday at 9:00 PM EST
localized entirely on my blog and yours
remember cable tv? coming home and turning on the background noise machine and sometimes u end up catching a really cool random episode you have no context for? maybe you dont even know the show and can't keep any of the characters straight from scene to scene but it's still doing something interesting that grabs you? well do i have a group dash activity for you!
open for anyone who wants to follow along via dash liveblog to drop in or out at anytime. star trek familiarity isn't needed - this is how i got into star trek! i still frequently have no idea whats going on lol.
pluto.tv has multiple trek channels (we'll be switching between whichever of voy and dsnine is more interesting each week, probably. i miss my wives if im away from either one too long. they also aired in the same time and have some plot/character crossover). pluto is usa-only but can be vpn worked-around. pluto also runs like shit and breaks often. woo!!!!!!!!!!
[my wife dsnine channel]
Tumblr media
[ID from alt: odo looking over a ship railing contemplatively, narrating, "nobody ever had to teach me the justice trick."]
the queer polycule of coworkers in the space mall deal with the aftermath of space fascist occupation and the threat of repeated space war. with religious background shenanigans i still dont understand. the ferengi rehabilitation show that fails at that spectacularly. the charismatic as all get out antagonists who genuinely suck show <3 half of whom are jeffrey combs. loves a hamfisted harrowing historical allegory
[my wife voyager channel]
Tumblr media
[ID from alt: tuvok, wisely: you should anticipate paradox.]
they want to get back to earth and can't get to earth ): a resistance group and a state military group get stranded on the ship voy together and learn to overcome their differences in definitely politically coherent ways. i got banned from social media for saying what captain janeway did to her cyborg mentee she's teaching to be human again. loves a harrowing "wouldnt that be fucked up if?" psychological labyrinth
come hang out!!!

Janeway/Chakotay?
for the ship ask game
Ship It
What made you ship it?
I think I shipped them in the first episode of Voyager. But it kicked off during the episode when they were both stranded on the planet.
I’m a multishipper so Chakotay isn’t the only one I ship with Janeway, but Chakotay is the first person I shipped with Janeway.
For the longest time, I remember in the 90s when we only had seasons 1 to 3, my focus was very much Janeway/Chakotay oriented. Most of the fic I consumed were Janeway/Chakotay oriented.
But what re-ignited my shipping for Janeway/Chakotay was Year of Hell and the waistcoat pocket watch Chakotay gifted Janeway for her birthday. She rebuffs his gift out of practicality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Chakotay disobeyed her order and kept the pocket watch. Janeway finds it months later, after Annorax kidnapped Chakotay and Paris. I love the inversion where its Chakotay and Tom Paris who are both damsels in distress, and basically playing the honey pot who works over the bad guys for their own ends. .
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, later near the close of the episode, when Janeway orders her crew to other ships and after saying her affecting goodbye to her oldest friend, Tuvok, Janeway looks at her pocket watch.
Tumblr media
Janeway holds the pocket watch and looks at it as she walks towards the command chairs.
Tumblr media
Janeway looks at Chakotay’s chair to her right and looks at it, her expression unreadable. And yet, we sense what she is feeling— the absence of Chakotay.
Tumblr media
Janeway looks at Chakotay’s chair to her right and looks at it, her expression unreadable. And yet, we sense what she is feeling— the absence of Chakotay.
Still clutching the time piece Chakotay gifted her. For luck. For something else, maybe, we will never know.
Tumblr media
And with that Janeway sits down on her Command chair. Her throne. A lone queen in a ruined landscape. She will go down with this ship, a Captain to the end.
Also, I can’t help but think of the Ozymandias poem. Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
I do love their mutual respect for each other, but also that Chakotay is willing to be second-in-command to Janeway. It’s really quite a thing for something during the 90s that we know Janeway is in charge and Chakotay is her second-in-command. And even though they would disagree, Chakotay will do his damnest to support Janeway.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
I don’t know if it’s unpopular but — as I am a multishipper— I ship Janeway with both Seven and Chakotay. I wouldn’t mind a story where they manage to work it out.
Also, I wouldn’t mind reading an angsty story about the 23 years in the Delta Quadrant where all three are miserable because Chakotay loves Janeway, Seven loves Janeway and Janeway loves both but because she can’t allow herself to love anyone while she’s a Captain… it does end up becoming Chakotay and Seven. And its a messy, complicated thing they end up in. Especially if Seven died where none of the two realize that Seven also loved Janeway and Chakotay became the shell of who he was because he felt guilty for loving Janeway while mourning for his wife, who he liked and cared for but didn’t love.
And Janeway also has to contend with the grief of losing Seven but also the relief of not seeing both people she loves together. But at what cost?
Or even an angsty story where the 23 years happened but it ends up happily where they do figure out that there is such a thing as a poly relationship. It would be an interesting story where Janeway has to contend with the realization that she loves two people at once and that she can’t choose.
She loves both Chakotay and Seven equally and differently.
But somehow they do figure things out and they live it all out happily.
So… I guess that’s… unpopular as opinions go.

For the character ask game: Kes + 1, 12, 20
Thank you so much for the ask!! (Ask game in question)
1. Why do you like or dislike this character?
Ok! So I'm a huge Kes fan, and I was initially drawn to her because she's got this little aura of joy, and you can't help but love her, which you can see in other character's interactions with her on the show. Any room she walks into instantly gets a little brighter and she's just so fundamentally kind and gentle and full of love.
So that's what initially drew me to her, but what hooked me, was that fact that the longer you watch, the more we learn about her, the more deeply strange she gets. We've got that fantastic scene in elogium where she eats all those fucking bugs with that deranged expression, and of course, my all time favorite, this one scene where the doctor tells Kes he has some autopsy reports for her to read because he knows she loves autopsies. This by the way, is NEVER brought up again which I think is a terrible loss, because what thing to say about a character and then never mention! What a fact!
So you've got this little elfish looking girl, who's still fundamentally kind and gentle, but now we also know "oh she's a bit of a freak!" and she's wicked smart, and then she learn, oh, she's got these terrifying powers at her core and actually she might not be as fundamentally gentle as we (the audience) or kes herself thought. And now Kes has to grapple with this, and she's still a deeply good and loving person at heart, but now she has to try a little harder to suppress these urges and that makes her fundamentally more interesting.
Also her relationships with Janeway and Tuvok and The Doctor all bring me so much joy. Janeway's love for her, and the way she smiles when Kes is around, the way she hugs her when she leaves just!! Rip me to pieces. And Tuvok's mentorship and quiet protection of her?? And that scene when the Doctor holds her in Twisted. Kes has 3 parents, and honestly all three of them think they're taking care of her, but they need her more than she needs them.
And what's kept me loving her, is in a way her missed potential. So much about Kes wasn't explored, so much was left unanswered, and getting to rotate her around in my head and think about all the things she could have been is so fun. I deeply wish she had been used more, because on paper she's such a fascinating, deeply weird character. And she was just starting to come into her own when we leave her. She's broken up with Neelix, she's making her own choices, and I want to imagine where that would have gone. (I have further thoughts on this, but this is already ridiculously long, so I will continue this in a different post)
Long story short, she's a lovable little weird girl, and I like weird little girls. She'd crawl around on all fours and make up weird stories at recess in fourth grade and I like that about her.
Also she reminds me of the "a little guy!" > "oh they're actually fucked up" meme.
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
Well I LOVE the art where people make her look a little more bug like. With weird pupils and antennae and such. I love that, I definitely headcanon her looking a bit creepier like that.
I also headcanon her as a lesbian. Her whole relationship with Neelix baffles me. I honestly LOVE them as friends, they're so great when they're just silly best friends, but I cannot stand them as a couple. She's a gay girlie.
20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?
SEVEN!! Seven!!! GAH! The missed potential! Pretty much a weirdgirls club with Seven, B'elanna, and Kes. Kes would have been the perfect person to help Seven reintegrate into society, because she's patient and kind, and she'd get a huge kick out of Seven's deadpan humor. I mean, the EMH is her best friend, she's very good at dealing with people who others consider hard to get along with.
Kes wouldn't make Seven feel bad about the way she is, or try to pressure her to conform to what she wants from Seven. She'd take her how she was and love her for her whole being, not for what she could be. Also Seven would be Kes's scary dog ❤️ Because people meet Kes and think she's an easy target or a pushover (even though she could probably obliterate anyone if she so felt like it) but then Seven is standing behind her looking menacing and they hurry away as quick as they can, completely unaware they were scared of the wrong blonde.

Hiya! for the Star Trek ask game:
8) which captain would you like to serve under, 15) top 3 fave alien crewmates and 36) which social issue would you like to see tackled?
8) I'm kind of surprised at this answer, but the more I think purely about the characters, the more I think that SNW Pike would be my favourite captain to serve under. He's a little warmer and less distant and reserved than most of the other captains (other than Sisko, who I also considered, but I'd rather travel than be on a space station) to people outside of his main circle, and I would like to be invited for one of his home-cooked meals. TOS or AOS Pike, less so. Plus, Anson Mount and I graduated from the same small MFA theatre program, so I feel a certain sense of loyalty. It's like we both went to Dramafleet.
15) Oh this is tough, tough, tough! How dare! Well, I'd have to say Spock, for one; I think he's being overused right now, but I can't help but love that sarcastic mess of a half-Vulcan. I also have a huge soft spot for Deanna Troi, maybe because she's my girl Bev's BFF. And I was debating between Kira, Jadzia Dax, Tuvok, and Garak (all amazing), but then I realized that I'm actually going to give the third spot to D'Vana Tendi because I love her and she is me if I were more talented at both science and violence. (T'Lyn is also ranking up fast on my list.)
36) So many social issues! Trek has dealt with disability many times before, but something I'd like to see it acknowledge in a more complex way is the incredible range of opinions disabled people have in relation to their disabilities, and how that should inform care, treatment, and social policy. There are many things we consider "disabilities" that the people who have them consider integral parts of who they are (many people, for example, have spoken about their autism as something that should be accommodated rather than removed), versus disabilities where many (not all, because there's no such thing as a monolithic opinion, but more prevalently) consider them to have no positive aspect, and would rather they be "cured." For example, my type 1 diabetes has shaped my life, but if I could have it gone tomorrow, I would do it without hesitation or reservation. I'm not sure how they would delve into this discussion, but I think it would be a valuable one, if handled well.
Thanks so much for the ask!

it's me again. This time I wanna know what star trek ships u hate <3
julian/ezri. absolutely my number one most beloathed by a long shot. made even worse by the fact that they’re two characters i love on their own. i hate that it positions ezri as a consolation prize/replacement for jadzia and i hate how it stalled out a lot of her potential. ezri is one of my top characters of all time and we only had one season with her and they devoted so much of her character development to that. i feel like a lot of people hate this ship because they see it as getting in the way of garashir but let’s be real garashir was never in a million years going to happen in the show. plus also ezri was the one who really got the short end of the stick in that relationship.
tom/b’elanna. tom is so horrible to b’elanna and she deserved way better. like jezri, it’s a relationship that’s super detrimental to both characters. tom’s worst attributes come out around her and the fact that she puts up with it is just sad for her and a very unsatisfying character arc. unlike jezri i do think they had some potential, it’s cute that they both like tinkering and have theatre kid energy, but there’s just so much sexism and racism written into their relationship in the show that it’s poisoned me against them. tpk is a different deal though adding harry totally changes the entire dynamic.
kira/odo. both incredibly interesting characters! extremely boring together. i hate how their relationship was all about odo’s feelings but unfortunately that’s also the majority of 90s trek het relationships so what’re ya gonna do. kira/cretak 4 life.
tom/chakotay. this one is mostly just baffling to me, it feels like a very quintessential 90s/00s straight woman’s gay ship between two conventionally attractive guys who just don’t like each other very much. also i’m a hater about it because tuvok/chakotay is clearly the superior enemies to lovers ship and there doesn’t seem to be nearly as much content for them.
seven/shaw. whyyy what did seven ever do to you people. people need to stop mistaking disrespect for sexual chemistry.
also anything involving vorik. i fucking hate that guy. they should’ve airlocked him.

Caretaker Part 1
Okay, so I just finished Caretaker, the 2 part season premiere of Voyager. It's been a while, so there's stuff I forgot was there. Some of it was good. Some of it was, omg. But let's see if I can post my review, which is a series of notes I made while watching. I hope for more discussion later.
Tumblr media
That thingy you're running into means you're screwed, Chakotay
Star Wars Crawl
Okay we start out with words on a screen. There’s this group of federation citizens called the Maquis who didn’t agree with Starfleet’s moronic treaty that are fighting the Cardassians and some say they are heroes and the Federation says they are outlaws.  Yay I saw the Maquis on Ds9!  I can’t wait to see more of them. (cough)
Scene 1: Maqui Ship. Chakotay and Maquis crew trying to outrun Cardassians.  Yay!  Chakotay is a really assertive leader here.  I’m excited. We have a coherent tetryan beam.  I hate those incoherent ones.
Wave hits them and light and we have Voyager credits.  Good theme song. Love the orchestra.
Scene 2: Federation penal colony.  In New Zealand?
Tumblr media
That's right, bitches, I'm here.
Janeway shows up at the penal colony to find Tom Paris who could maybe find the Maquis cause he served with them before they kicked him out just like Starfleet did.
Tumblr media
I'm really tough. I don't have Daddy issues.
She tells Tom he is an observer and he whines about being a good pilot. Except for the pilot error that got three people killed, oh nevermind. Just wait five minutes, Tom.
Scene 3 Tom is annoying on the shuttle to Voyager
Okay I have a question. Tom is wearing a Starfleet uniform. Why do observers still wear a uniform?  Don’t you need to earn that?
Also: Pretty Betazoid Ensign Stadi (don't get used to her) informs Tom that Voyager has bio-nueral gel packs.  They are so much more efficient.  Unless there is cheese on board.
Scene 4 Harry is nearly conned for first time on space station ds9. Harry's theory: get con artists off your back by buying everything. Tom saves him cause he's as big of a con as Quark.
Tumblr media
Oh, hey, is that Quark from Ds9 that other show you should watch?
Scene 5 Tom and Harry meet the Doctor
The Doc is super bitchy to them. I met he's gonna make stuff hard for Tom.
Scene 6 Janeway talks to fiancee
His name is Mark Johnson. Really. Unknown Truth: Tuvok's real last name is Smith. Anyway, the show has a few minutes to tell us who Mark is and why Janeway loves him. So they talk about her dog.
Tumblr media
Nice knowin' ya, Mark
Janeway's dog is named Molly. She is expecting puppies. She likes her doggy bed. I am officially more invested in her dog now.
Scene 7 Junior High mess hall
Doctor and First Officer Cavitt, two of the most nondescript white guys ever (doctor isn't even named), gossip with Harry about what Tom did cause it's junior high and oh no these guys don't like Tom what will he do?
Scene 8 Wonder why it's called the Badlands
Plasma storms, more coherent beams, stuff is fine. What could go wrong? What's that bright light?
Scene 9 Voyager go boom
Tumblr media
This is going to take FOREVER to fix!
Ship is transported 75,000 light years to the Delta Quadrant and they hit the breaks kinda hard. The ship is all messed up. So is Janeway's hair.
Tumblr media
Where is my HAIRSPRAY?
A couple of shots later:
Tumblr media
Seriously? It's hair magic!
Turns out that all command officers (including that pesky doctor and first officer) except Janeway and the entire medical staff are dead. What kind of bad karma does Janeway have? They get scanned and beamed off the ship.
Gonna stop here for a break so it's not so long. Stay tuned next time for Farmville and the evil corn on the cob lady.

If you want to: assign a music instrument to each member of the voyager crew + their favourite music genre to play. you may keep harry's clarinet if you wish to, or you may assign him a new instrument! (& take care <3)
This is such a fun question, thank you for asking!! Actually I've been thinking about this for a while, albeit strictly in the context of an orchestra. Some time ago I had an idea for a fic in Harry's point of view where it was hinted that after many a boring shift on the bridge he's basically assigned an imaginary instrument to each member of the senior crew. Here's how it went (and actual music nerds please forgive my partial understanding of orchestral dynamics):
Voyager crew as orchestra instruments (according to Harry Kim)
Harry: clarinet (obviously. charming and eclectic member of the woodwind section, with hidden complexities!)
B'Elanna: oboe (the oboe has such a distinct timbre while still being very expressive. Also the fact that oboe players have to make their own reeds from bamboo blanks really fits B'Elanna's resourcefulness, according to both me and I think Harry as well)
Tom: trumpet (loud and in your face but also able to carry forward entire sections on its own)
Janeway: violin, and precisely principal first violin (for those who may not be aware, this role is also known as 'concertmaster' since they direct a lot of the technical details... it's the closest you can get to being a director while still playing an instrument)
Chakotay: viola (tends to get overshadowed by the violins but taken on its own it has a charming and very distinctive voice)
Tuvok: cello (it HAS the range and it can do so many different parts in an orchestra, but either way it's foundational--source: dude trust me, i used to play the cello a bit)
Kes: flute/piccolo (maybe boring choice but I think Harry would think of her as a fellow woodwind player... also the piccolo can get quite intense if not a little grating!)
Seven of Nine: piano (yeah okay maybe boring choice too since she actually plays it in “Human Error” for some reason but it IS a big instrument with lots of range and dynamics that tends to steal the show... and it's somewhat of a 'later' addition to orchestral ensemble music... hmmmm...)
at which point you're asking... where IS the bass and Harry's answer I think would be
Neelix: contrabassoon (it a a bit of a goofy-looking but surprisingly complex instrument with plenty of range, also again DIY reed-making for resourcefulness)
the Doctor: timpani (drums that can be detuned while you play them?? both melodic and rhythmic?? impossible to ignore even when you would maybe like to?? perfect for the Doctor)
and that concludes it... I realize this wasn't perhaps the answer you were expecting! I'll have to think more about assigning instruments & musical genres outside of the context of an orchestra because that's such a big question! But one I definitely love to think about.
(I absolutely do think Seven blasted “A Blaze In The Northern Sky” from the cargo bay 2 speakers at least once in an attempt to reconnect with her human roots or something)

20 questions for fic writers
Thank you so much for tagging me, @divinemissem13! ❤️
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 127
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 660,997
3. What fandoms do you write for? Star Treks, mostly Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Picard, and Voyager.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Tuvok’s Secret (G): Tuvok has a secret — and he trusts only one person onboard to keep it. (Kathryn Janeway & Tuvok)
Feet on the Ground (G): Something solid slams into Kathryn’s back. She stumbles forward, bumping Mark, who in turn careens into someone else. Kathryn turns to glare at the probably inebriated party-goer who didn’t watch where they were going. But, instead, she looks up to achingly familiar dark eyes and the curves and lines of a tattoo that Kathryn spent the last eighteen months telling herself she didn’t miss. (Chakotay/Kathryn Janeway)
The Halo Effect (M): Tom Paris and Kathryn Janeway didn’t intend to fall in love. (Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris)
Fly Me to the Moon (E): Kathryn Janeway and Tom Paris never met each other years before Voyager. Never served on a covert mission together. Never fell in love. Never planned a future together. Nope, never happened. Because a secret like that could lead to some … complex dichotomies. (Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris)
Bad Ensign (T): Harry Kim finds out he missed out on an important part of the Starfleet Academy experience. Hilarity and dirty jokes ensue. (ensemble, friendship fic)
5. Do you respond to comments? Yes. If someone was kind enough to leave a comment, I’m going to thank them.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? I used to not know how to answer this question, but I recently got a kudos on Honey, I’m Home and while that story definitely isn’t “sit down crying” angst, I feel like maybe it qualifies? (Though In the Doorway might also fit under that criteria? Both stories are Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris, but they only get together in one of them.)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Either Feet on the Ground or Youthful Exuberance (Some Kind of Love). Feet on the Ground has Janeway and Chakotay finding their way together after their Delta Quadrant trauma (note: Chakotay is afraid to leave the Sol system for fear of getting pulled into the Delta Quadrant again — Prodigy!Chakotay didn’t exist yet when I wrote that but, from what I’ve heard, he could possibly relate). Youthful Exuberance lets our heroes, Christopher Pike and Una Chin-Riley, have all manner of ups and downs, but the tags promise a 100 percent happy ending and I was determined to deliver.
8. Do you get hate on fics? Not that I’m aware of, usually.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes. Vanilla because I find that interesting to write. (I’ll read all sorts of stuff.)
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I write crossovers within the Trekverse. The two craziest allowed Tuvok and Geordi LaForge to have tea together (Asunder [T] Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris) and Shannon O’Donnell Janeway to tell Benny Russell how much his writing has meant to her (Meeting of the Minds [G] Shannon O’Donnell Janeway & Benny Russell, Kathryn Janeway & Benjamin Sisko).
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Other than by ChatGPT, not to my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, In the Doorway was translated into Russian.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, and am doing so again.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? NCC 1701
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? There’s one I technically finished about Tom Paris and Owen Paris in the aftermath of Owen’s beta canon torture by the Cardassians. But it’s really dark and I don’t know if I’ll ever edit or post it.
16. What are your writing strengths? Adaptability (to prompts), brevity, details.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I’m having trouble lately with voice and lack of vocabulary variety.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? If necessary, a beta fluent in the language can be very helpful.
19. First fandom you wrote for? I consider that to be Voyager, but recently reflected on an even earlier fandom for me.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? My most recent fic always holds a place in my heart, so Disarmed (Mirror Una Chin-Riley/Mirror Christopher Pike) is special to me, and also was an interesting mental stretch because I’d never before written sex that the characters think is good but I think isn’t good. But my all-time favorite? Youthful Exuberance (Some Kind of Love). It’s my novel length love letter to Chris and Una, and it means a lot to me.
Tagging: Tumblr has been doing this fun thing lately where I don’t see posts from people I follow. So, if you actually see this, please consider yourself tagged with no pressure. Also, in addition to the wonderful people tagged by @divinemissem13, I’m tagging @grissomesque @fiadorable @emilie786 @genius2mania @lorcaswhisky @enterprise-come-in @marymoss1971 @sun-lit-roses @kejsarinna @iamstartraveller776 @isagrimorie @emonydeborah and the fantastic folks I’m not thinking of right now because I have tag anxiety.

20 questions for fic writers
tagged by @mylittleredgirl, who has been a good cheerleader friend for like 20 years now. That's wild.
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 428.
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 2,852,289
3. What fandoms do you write for?
112 - Once Upon a Time (though not lately),
81 - Star Trek the Next Generation,
78 - Star Trek Discovery,
75 - Star Trek Voyager,
42 - Agents of SHIELD.
And many others. The forecast is for Discovery to take the top slot.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Two really long (100k plus) Once Upon a Time babyfics, one Game of Thrones little what if one shot where Catelyn saves the book, one little femslashy Game of Thrones oneshot with really nice poetic language, and a Once Upon a Time Dragon Queen babyfic that might be one of the best things I've ever written.
(Write a really long fic in the most popular ship of a pretty big femslash fandom and one goes get a LOT of kudos).
5. Do you respond to comments?
I try. I get tired, I mean to respond. I forget, I get overwhelmed. I'm trying. I have... 2507 unread comments on Ao3 going back over 8 years. I'm not doing terribly well, but I try.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
When I the starry courses know Star Trek Voyager: Kathryn Janeway/Borg Queen.
Janeway sacrifices herself to the Borg to save her crew. It's pretty dark.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most of them? Without Knowing How, perhaps, because characters who were dead in canon wake up in an AU where they're married, happy, and have a baby, and they're really sweet in how they just roll with it. (Philippa Georgiou/Katrina Cornwell, Star Trek Discovery).
8. Do you get hate on fics?
not really...once someone wrote a fic about how much they hated a threesome I was writing (a few other people were them too, and it was fun). Once Upon a Time was a wild fandom. I did take it very personally at the time.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
sometimes, I prefer foreplay and flirting and all the things that come after the smut. Smut does lead to babies sometimes though so...I have to write it. Sometmes I'm in the mood and sometimes I'm not.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Stargate Atlantis and Star Trek the Next Generation, which was nice, all the characters are kind and thoughtful and the tech going back and forth was fun.
Hilariously that fic got linked on some forum about starships where they critiqued my starship combat.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I have not.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! There are a few on ao3.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
A livejournal friend and I cowrote two Janeway/Chakotay fics, back in the day, and they were so fun. They're very soft.
I was Janeway, B'Elanna, Seven and Tuvok. She was Chakotay, Tom Paris, the Doctor and Harry Kim.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Kathryn Janeway/Beverly Crusher probably? All time is hard. I'm much more of a "current time" person.
Currently it's Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have the following WIPs
Universe Travelling 4 year old causes chaos and romance.
Michael rescues her sick girlfriend.
Quantum - (the baby's here, so...how do they go back to work...I need to reread the whole thing to make sure I have all the threads)
Michael gets pon farr.
The first two are for year of the OTP so I have until December 2024 to finish them. I like they, there's a good bit written of both, so that's likely.
Quantum owns my soul, so I will finish that, but it might be slow. I get distracted.
Pon Farr I am working on today! so I feel good.
16. What are your writing strengths?
long character arcs. Dialogue. Soft things with gentle emotions and slow plot.
Character goes on a long emotional journey while she is pregnant and then gives birth under unpredictable circumstances, while being loved and supported. is my thing. It could be on the tin containing my fic.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Description. I don't see things. I don't bother. My fics take place in a void where costumes and setting are barely mentioned.
I don't write intensity, or plot that moves quickly. I get distracted by world building and OCs.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I don't do it. I usually write something about how "she said in Vulcan" or something. I speak some German, some Mandarin, I might try that if I have a native speaker to help me, but likely not.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Star Trek the Next Generation!! I handwrote a self insert fic into my journal as a child. I think I was middle school aged.
I wrote a bunch of Sunset Beach on forums, then Star Trek the Next Geration, and one of my oldest internet published fics is on Ao3. That fic turns 23 this year.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Ever ever?
Right this moment it's...migrations and other recurring phenomena because I keep rereading it and I like it.
Michael and Laira are trapped in a turbolift and they look after each other, then they flirt and make out and have sex and the desire to have sex is really well done.
Next time I do this meme it might be different, but right now. I really love that one.
(it also does not get enough love, it's good, dammit).
tagging @lonesomehighways, @moomkin77, @purlturtle, @sadmushroomgoblin, @concentfortea, @an-inky-fingered-lass, @thewitchofelpis, @lenfaz @liz-squids @divinemissem13 if you feel like it.
