Lovebirds can eat vegetables, but they should be given in moderation. Vegetables should be offered as a supplement to their regular diet, and should not replace their main diet of seeds and pellets. Vegetables should be fresh, washed, and chopped into small pieces. Some vegetables that lovebirds enjoy include kale, spinach, carrots, broccoli, and bell peppers. Vegetables that are safe for lovebirds to eat include: kale, spinach, carrots, bell peppers, squash, broccoli, cucumber, sweet potato, zucchini, and green beans.

What do lovebirds do all day ?Lovebirds awaken with the dawn, get a drink, eat, and then immediately begin to chirp. They will generally quiet down by mid-morning and resume their chirping in the late afternoon. These birds are very active, flying and climbing about, gnawing on wood or chew toys, and grooming themselves all day.

How do you get lovebirds to eat vegetables? Instead of switching 100% to fruits and veggies, offer it to them slowly. Start with a few fruits and veggies and add the seeds your lovebird normally has. Mix it well (works best with finely chopped fruits and vegetables) and offer it to your bird. You could also add some of its favorite seeds on top.

Lovebirds, the serenaders of calm, whisper tranquility into the aviary with their gentle chirps. Their tunes, like a soft melody, create an atmosphere of serenity that envelops the feathered community. As the evening falls, lovebirds unveil their nocturnal lullabies, a tranquil serenade that ushers the world into a peaceful night. With the sunrise, their morning tweets become a gentle wake-up call, inviting the world to embrace the day with serenity. Lovebirds, the feathered artists of calm, turn the aviary into a canvas of tranquility where every chirp is a stroke of peace.

A little bit of Silas headcanons
Still writing the horny fic but I'm in a mood to give a little extra.
Silas x gn! Reader
Cw: yandere character, possessiveness, mentions of murder.
Sfw
Silas does not understand the concept of if you love something set it free. He believes that if you truly love something you would take care of it and protect it.
Everyone wants to talk about feral Silas but what about sweet and soft Silas? What about when he is exhausted from his Royal duties all he wants to do is find you rap his arms around you and hold you. he missed you so much, Silas it's a big cuddle bug, his favorite part of the day, this feeling your warm body close to him nuzzling his face into your neck and inhailing your scent to come him down.
Silas is jealous, is you.... in front of you, he'll be pouty and clingy. You can see the frustration and anger on his face when you talk about a past lover. If they ever see them in person, he'll be cold and arrogant, thinking himself to be better; however, if it's a guard Butler or maid, or anyone he will kill them with his bare hands, seeing them as unworthy for a swift and merciful death by his sword.
Silas gives you your own room. The more You escape or disobey, the more you slowly lose more privileges. He wants to spoil you and provide you with everything if you submit to him and accept his love. If you keep disobeying him and escaping like a mere prisoner, he will treat you as such. He does not mind seeing you with a collar attached to a chain he holds around all day so you will not leave his side. He does not mind you sitting in his lap like a little fidget toy for him to play with while he does his work. His feather pen in one hand scratching on the paper while his other squeezing your thigh, playing with your hair, running his hand underneath your shirt, etc.
you'll never see that Prince more happy if you yourself ask to sleep in his own room. Despite Silas having such an innocent look on love he's not stupid he expects you to struggle. So be fun to watch his eyes widen when you ask to sleep in his bed.
Yes Silas reads romance novels he's a hopeless romantic in his loyal Library there's a whole section of just romance novels he's absolutely obsessed with the idea of Falling in Love, love at first sight, soulmates. Feeding his innocent and Rose tinted, delusional thoughts on love. Silas has never felt the feeling of falling in Love before, he firmly believes that it was meant to be even if you didn't feel the same he believes that it will happen it just takes time for you to realize those feelings as well. he has never been truly loved for a long time so he craves it, he craves it more than a man craves food.
Silas doesn't fully understand the more Primal animalistic Cravings he has. These desires can be controlled; Silas just doesn't; it feels much better to satisfy those cravings than to hold them back.
Silas loves birds. He orders over birds of paradise with beautiful plumages. He has a whole aviary in the castle Courtyard full of colorful birds. His favorite, of course, are lovebirds. When he was a general in his father's Army, he had a falcon, practicing falconry. He had trained a crow to deliver his messages since birds were much faster than carriages, he would constantly have the upper hand in battle, attacking when the enemy was ill-prepared.

Hi Courtney! for the weird writer asks please:
4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?
36. They say to Write What You Know. Setting aside for a moment the fact that this is terrible advice...what do you Know?
Hi Rae! Thanks for the ask. These are fun!
4. What’s a word that makes you go absolutely feral?
Ooof. Irregardless. Like, setting aside the “sounds fake but okay” of it all… While it is technically an actual word, this clumsy, ridiculous double-negative mess means the exact same thing without the discordant “ir-”. Which is nonsensical! Just say “regardless”! But wait, what’s that? Most people who use this word actually think it means the opposite?
I just, I can’t.
36. They say to Write What You Know. Setting aside for a moment the fact that this is terrible advice...what do you Know?
I don’t actually think it’s always terrible advice! You certainly shouldn’t be constricted to writing what you know, or let it limit the stories you tell. But I think there’s a lot to be said for bringing some aspect of your own knowledge or history or experience into what you write, as long as it’s used as a tool to strengthen characters and serve the story.
But to actually answer the question… I know birds. African and South American parrots, specifically. Is that weird? My dad was a breeder for my whole childhood, and I basically grew up in an aviary. He specialized in Congo and Timneh Greys (and for a long time was the go-to Grey breeder in the country), but Meyers, Senegals, Caiques, Capes, Indian and African Ringnecks, Amazons, whatever. You name it, we raised it. We belonged to a regional bird club that had meetings and shows. I learned how to handfeed baby birds at 11. We all had our own pets — my mom had Poncho, who was exactly like every African Grey you’ve ever seen a special on, my sister had a peachface lovebird, Romeo, and I had my childhood cockatiel, Tango (who was a Lutino, a big sweetheart, and a pretty good talker but loved to sing). It’s been years, but I can still tell you what dominant and recessive genes you need to pair to get a whiteface pearl pied cockatiel or an albino ringneck.
I have no idea when any of that would ever be helpful in terms of writing, but there it is.

more about louis and his birds please 🥺
Oh I assume this is re: these Louis hcs!
One of his favorite old man activities is watching and feeding ducks. He yells at people (including children) who feed them bread. The only thing in his and Lestat’s freezer is meat for Mojo and frozen peas for any ducks he may encounter
Lestat's biggest gift to him at the château was setting up Bird Enrichment at all windows. The ground floor has baths and the upper levels have houses and feeders of all kinds. There's also a very large swan pond on the grounds with a gazebo next to it
All the crows know him, he's one of the flock. Any food left behind by human employees becomes corvid food by default, so guard your sandwich
There are inside birds too. He has native songbirds in an aviary, a starling he's trained to speak full sentences, a cockatiel that sings Verdi, and a pair of lovebirds given to him by Lestat when they moved in together officially
Technically he doesn't need binoculars for birdwatching but he uses them anyway and he keeps a list on his desk of every kind of bird he's ever seen. The list began two hundred years ago though, so it's been transferred through several different notebooks. Eventually it'll probably be a google doc
His white whale is the aquatic warbler, he'd sell anyone he knows for a good sighting and perhaps and picture

Lovebirds do enjoy eating a variety of foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds, and pellets. They also enjoy small amounts of cooked eggs, cooked beans, and cooked grains. It is important to provide a balanced diet for your lovebird to ensure that they stay healthy.
Lovebirds are very active and playful birds, so they need plenty of activities to keep them entertained. Here are some ideas for keeping your lovebird active:
1. Provide plenty of toys for your lovebird to play with. This can include swings, ladders, mirrors, bells, and other toys.
2. Take your lovebird out of its cage for supervised playtime. This will give your bird the opportunity to explore and interact with its environment.
3. Provide your lovebird with plenty of perches and branches for climbing.
4. Hang a bird-safe mirror in the cage so your lovebird can interact with its reflection.
5. Offer your lovebird a variety of treats, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.
6. Play games with your lovebird, such as fetch or hide-and-seek.
7. Teach your lovebird some basic tricks, such as stepping up onto your finger or flying to a designated spot.
8. Take your lovebird on supervised outdoor adventures, such as a walk in the park or a ride in the car.

Red Oktoberfest: sweet little birds (part 2)♡
Heavy finds himself pacing around with excitement in his own quarters. "Oh, a date with the doktor. i can't believe this day is upon me! We haven't been on a date in so long!" is what swirls around his mind. As he searches around the closet, he finds some nice, light clothing. hopefully, he'll be looking good in this. Heavy is currently wearing a green button-up that has a sandwich pattern, some green cargo shorts, and a comfortable pair of shoes.

Misha then looked at himself in the mirror, turning lightly and making sure that he looked presentable. The thoughts in his mind began to swirl, and he felt slightly nervous. While him and Ludwig had been dating for so long, the thought of the doctor alone gave Misha butterflies, and the doctor was everything that Misha had ever wanted. The man puffed his chest out lightly as he took a deep breath. He put his large hands onto the sides of his desk, where he was looking in his mirror. "I got this...me and doktor have been dating long time. We make good team and good couple."
"I'm glad you zhink so!"
Misha looked to his side and eyed Ludwig, who was standing beside him in his outfit. He wore a black button-up t-shirt with flying doves patterned along the front and back, a pair of tight skinny jeans, and his leather boots.
"Doktor! You shouldn't scare Misha like that! Would make me end up your operating table because of Über heart attack, da?" The larger man chuckled as he turned to face his lover.
Misha looked to his side and eyed Ludwig, who was standing beside him in his outfit.
"Well, Zhen! Ve certainly don't want zhat!" Ludwig happily laughed back at Misha as he leaned against the desk. "That is a lovely outfit heavy! The shirt really suits you!" The older man purred as he put his hands onto his lap.
"You really think so?" Misha looked at the doctor with flushed cheeks as he sat beside the man.
"Vell, of course I do, my dear Heavy! You look wunderbar! That shirt looks so nice on your biceps.." The medic purred as he grabbed his partners arm and began to squeeze lightly as he whispered into the other man's ear."You have such a wunderbar psyciche! I could admire you all day long, my Bärchen!" Ludwig was now caressing his lovers' cheeks gently as he pressed a firm kiss to his lovers soft lips. Heavy chuckled lightly before happily kissing Ludwig back. "Well, someone is in a happy mood? Must be very excited, da?"
"Oh yes, Misha! Please could you tell me where we are going? You know I'm too impatient for surprises! I need to know! The curiosity is eating me! Bitte?" The older man almost screamed as he began practically bouncing out of excitement.
"Okay! Okay! Heavy is taking doktor to aviary! Thought you would like it because of birds. I also see doktor has many books about birds. Heavy loves when you talk about birds doktor. Makes me happy when you are happy!"
“Hmm, an aviary? Ah, I don’t know what to say.. heavy, I’d love that! You’re completely right, and I do love birds!” He was excited to see them and maybe to steal a couple as well.
"Are doves doktors favorite bird? Or does he like a different bird?"
"Oh ja! I love doves! They are so intelligent! As you've seen before, I've taught Archimedes several tricks! Such as whistling and playing dead! I guess if I had to pick a favorite, doves would be it!"
"That makes sense. You have many doves, including our little Archimedes! Doktor is ready now?" Heavy asked the older man .
"Ja! Let us go!" Medic led Misha out of the door, happily walking until he bumped into somebody.
"Oi lovebirds. Watch where yer goin'." Sniper chuckled as he showed the Medic that Archimedes was sitting upon his shoulder.
"Oh! I see jou have Archimedes! Did he follow you? He has a habit of doing zhat! Once, he followed me all ze way to ze battlefield! He is such a clever zhing isn't he? Aren't you, my little dove?" Medic cooed happily to Archimedes, who now flew onto Medics shoulder and began preening the man's hair. "No Archimedes! I just combed zat!"
The Sniper chuckled as he watched Heavy remove the bird from Medic's hair."I was wonderin' if I could watch the little bugger for ya'." I could also take you to the aviary if you'd like. I'm goin' huntin' anyway. Can't get rusty with my shootin' over a break, roight? " Sniper smiled as he motioned for Archimedes to come back to him, and the bird flew back and began nuzzling Sniper affectionately.
"Well...he seems to trust jou. Alright, Herr Sniper, but please watch him closely! And for jou Archimedes, stay with Sniper! No playing vith my experiments, and no playing with peoples bodies!" Medic sternly stated as he gently touched the dove upon the beak, making Archimedes coo.
"Don't worry! Your lil' dove is safe with me. Ain't that right Archimedes?" Sniper stated as Archimedes cooed happily in response. The bird looked at him joyfully and flew outside towards the Sniper's van.
"c'mon, lets go now! no time to waste!" Sniper finds a safe place for the bloodied dove and brings the two mercenaries to sit down and buckle up as he drives his van to the aviary.
♡---------------------‐----------‐♡
As doktor and I get out of the van, my hand finds my way into his as i help him step down, as I'd hate for him to fall.
"Danke!" Ludwig smiles at me as I help him down.
"Oi, you two just call if ya' need anythin' alright?" Sniper smiles and adjusts his sunglasses before leaving.
Ludwig smiles at me warmly before turning his head in curiosity as he asked "Vell, mein dear Heavy! I have a question for you! Vhat is your favorite bird? Did jou see many birds when jou lived in Russia?"
I thought for a moment, remembering that when i lived in Russia, my sisters and I used to watch as the geese began to fly south. "Da, there were birds, though most left for winter. I like geese. Very beautiful birds."
"Really? I admire geese as well! Zhey remind me of vhen I was a young boy in Germany. My mutter used to take me to zhe park! I loved watching zhe geese swim and walk around zhe park! Zhey were so beautiful and peaceful!" Ludwig exclaimed as he held my hand.
We both smiled and blushed warmly before we walked into the aviary. Inside, there were succulents and shrubs dotting the ground alongside large ferns and vines that had crept along the sides of the aviary. The ground was covered in dusty sand. above them, the top of the enclosure had a thin black net with some hanging bird houses and perches. A couple of macaws and thrushes sat upon the perches and whistled happily.
"Oh mein gott! Heavy! Zhis place is wunderbar! It's so beautiful here!" Medic exclaimed as he clenched my hand in his.
"Da,you like it?" I respond, admiring my lover's almost child-like enthusiasm at the birds.
"Oh! These are green-winged macaws! Zhey are so pretty! And those birds are Hyacinth macaws! Aren't zhey just Exquisit?" gasped Ludwig as he examined the birds in awe.
"Da doktor! Can tell you are enjoying yourself! What birds would you like to see next?" I asked, looking at the Medic as the older man held my hand tightly.
"Do you zhink this place has doves?" Asked Ludwig as he held my hand.
We both looked around before we saw two colorful doves fly towards a perch.
"Oh! Heavy! I know these birds! Those are Mariana fruit doves! Zhey are just beautiful!" Medic beamed with excitement as he watched the doves.
We watched for a while, admiring the birds before Ludwig turned to me with a genuine smile. A smile that wasn't like the ones he shot at the enemies before he striked with his Übersaw, but one that felt warm and kind. It felt like all of his love, affection, and care pouring into my soul. all of those good thoughts and feelings directed at me. And I did that to him, and only I can do that to Ludwig.
"Misha.. I wanted to say..danke. Thank you for being so gut to me. I know I can be frustrating at times, and I may be  constantly vorking, but.. I love you, Misha. Im so glad I'm vith you." Medic admitted before pulling me into a short but sweet kiss. I kissed him back lovingly before holding his hand tightly.
"Doktor, it is beginning to look late. Want to go home?" I asked as I caressed his un-gloved hands with my large thumb.
"Ja, all of zhis walking has made both of us tired." Medic yawned as he held my hand as we began walking home.
♡---------------------------------♡
"Vell, thanks for taking me out, Herr Heavy! I really enjoyed myself!" Medic purred happily as they both began to strip from their clothes and into their nightwear.
"Heavy is happy you loved it, Ludwig." Said Misha as he began to put on his pajamas.
"Is good we have warm clothes. Sometimes I forget how cold the desert is at night. Nowwhere near as cold as home, though. I enjoy the cold, reminds me of my мама." Stated Misha.
"Ja, it is pretty cold." Ludwig shivered lightly and moved closer to Misha.
"You want warm?" Misha lifted the blanket and moved under, motioning for Ludwig to put his head on his chest. Ludwig climbed onto the bed and settled his face upon Misha's muscular, heavy chest.
"Danke..." Said Ludwig sleepily. "I love when I get to be vith jou like zhis...so warm and comfy! You are just so loveable, my big Bärchen!" Medic cooed as they kissed one last time for the night.
"I love you, Ludwig..ready for bed, da?" Ludwig nodded, and Misha reached toward the lamp and turned off the light.
"I love you too, Misha." Medic yawned before falling asleep on his lovers chest.

make my heart surrender | carmy x reader | the playlist
here's a fun little collection of songs that make me think of this story. some of the songs feel like they could function as a soundtrack to the story, and some just make me think of carmy x reader. i created this playlist and listened to it while writing, in the car, doing dishes... seriously, the way this story took over my brain.
make my heart surrender: the playlist
***
sleeping with a friend - neon trees
carmy & reader's relationship in new york city -- while the title feels self-explanatory, this song has all the sexual tension of wondering our favorite kitchen lovebirds' will they won't they relationship. do we need a oneshot of the before times? maybe...
robbers - the 1975
angsty carmy & reader's relationship in nyc. this is also allegedly the prequel to 'about you' so it felt right to include it.
about you - the 1975
where the title of this fic comes from: 'now there's something about you that i can't remember / it's the same damn thing that made my heart surrender / and i miss you on the train, i miss you in the morning / i never what to think about / i think about you
it's the pining for me
chicago - sufjan stevens
the iconic song used in the show. i could see this song playing on reader's first day at the bear, or underscoring reader's travels to chicago
sleep tight - holly humberstone
oof, this song kills me. i'll add notable lyrics that make me think of carmy x reader, but it would be a beautiful underscore for their moment at the end of chapter two, when they say goodnight to each other.
"sleep tight i'm on my way back and feeling kind of sad because you were the best thing i never knew i had"
"you were the best thing i never knew was mine"
"god knows i've missed this feeling" makes me ache in the best ways why do we love being sad sm?!
closer - tegan and sara
i could see this song underscoring some of the kitchen flows when carmy & reader have smoothed things over around chapter three. i can just see reader working the garnish station and falling in love with carmy all over again as she watches him expedite.
can we also just talk about how this is a peak in the flow of the playlist? like they've finally smoothed things over and it's been nostalgic/acoustic/angsty and then this song happens and it's like an explosion of energy?? we're finally going to get some connection between these two
only human - the code, william singe
if this were a movie/tv show, i'd have this song play in the background of their conversation (date) at the aviary in chapter three.
untouched hearts - acoustic - the hunna
the lines "i know it's been hard but now it's time for you to get what you want, to know you're enough" feel like a fucking love letter from mikey to carmy. #LetItRip
it also feels like a feeling reader and carmy would share between the two of them about each other.
la vie en rose - emily watts
the song that plays at carmy's apartment after putting her dinner party playlist on shuffle. reader is flipping through the cookbook while he finishes the carbonara to the sweet sounds of this song. and they're making eyes at each other, and stealing glances when they think the other isn't looking GOODBYE
the girl - city & colour
this song is giving major waking-up-together-morning-after vibes. i mostly saw this song for the second to last chapter for the cute tattoo scene, but it could also be great for their first morning after season in chapter five.
flashed junk mind (acoustic version) - milky chance
just picture carmy & reader traipsing through chi-town's chinatown, arguing over who's gonna pay (because they both think it should be themselves), being cute, and fighting over carmy's cigarette during their walking dumpling date.
strawberries & cigarettes - troye sivan
this song accompanies their sweet goodbye at the start of chapter 7 and i'm quite convinced that troye sivan wrote it about carmen berzatto and you can't change my mind lol.
for the lines: "blue eyes, black jeans, lighters and candy, i've been a fool / strawberries & cigarettes always taste like you" and "remember when you taught me fate / said it'd all be worth the wait."
somebody - dagny
less on brand for the show, but the lyrics make me think so much about these two. it's giving: plot twist this is now a freeform show, i know. however, i envisioned this song being a part of reader packing up her things and catching up w friends back in ny. maaaaybe even as she's getting in her u-haul to drive to chicago.
solsbury hill - peter gabriel
peter gabriel said that this song was about losing something so that you can gain something else and i'm just not okay. this is the song that underscores the final scene in our lovely little epilogue, when reader surprises carmy at the bear ready to tell him that she's finally all in.

There was something about the scene of tropical plants and mist and the man he held a flame for being covered, arm to arm and even on his head, by colourful, chirping lovebirds, that made Abel wonder, just sometimes, if the door into the open section of the Aviary was in fact a gateway to Heaven.

It’s going in an ask because it’s going to be too long for tags. I hyperfixated on pet birds like… last year I think.
Going to specifically be speaking a lot about parrots because they’re the ones I know the most about and because the peach-faced lovebird in the article is a parrot (the article keeps talking about “resembling” a peach-faced lovebird and not just?? Being one? I don’t know if that’s a weird language thing but anyway.
Reasons why the cell is bad:
NO PERCHES! Nowhere to fly and land and climb (parrots especially often love to climb using their feet and beak). Did you know dowel stick perches are really bad for birds because they’re flat and have no variety and so the feet don’t get sufficient exercise and that leads to developing bumble-foot (where the feet get really swollen and bumpy).
BREAD??? Who feeds a parrot bread??? You shouldn’t feed birds bread in general but if you do it’s recommend to only be in small quantities because of the high sodium content and low nutritional value, and it should be whole grain and brown bread. TWO WHOLE SLICES OF WHITE BREAD for a bird that small?? The bird can barely fit in a hand like come on there’s more bread than bird in that cell.
No toys!! Birds need a lot more enrichment than people think (seriously I am so so mad about the birds as low-maintenance pets that can be kept for decoration opinion that’s so widely spread) and there is NONE in there. Parrots especially are also quite destructive and they love to destroy things for fun so toys should be able to be “used up” by the bird (via tearing and chewing and generally just being obliterated) so plastic toys Don’t Work. Natural materials are also preferred because plastic and rubber is very bad when digested (obviously). So stuff like tweed and sticks and branches and dry grass and stuff all good. You can put seeds and other food in some of them so that the bird has to dig or forage for it which is good for them because it’s a natural behaviour that they still retain (did you know parrots aren’t fully domesticated yet. Not even close. So they still retain a lot of those instincts and especially prey instincts which leads them to fly when threatened and be generally scared of people so that you have to earn their trust first before you can actually do anything because you are huge and they are so small and so scared. Anyway)
I’m still mad about the bread. Anyway. Seeds are also pretty bad for one birds, especially if it’s all they’re eating. They have a very high fat content and because the pet bird is not flying many many miles a day to burn all that off it just sits there and often becomes fatty liver disease. This is probably one of the biggest contributing factors that makes up that “pet birds have very short lifespans” nonsense, because people don’t feed their bird right and don’t get it enough exercise. Also the smaller the cage the more time the bird needs to spend out of it, to get the right amount of exercise and enrichment. A lot of people just don’t let their birds out of the cage ever??? Fucked up. The only time you’d maybe justify keeping the bird in the cage for its whole life would be if you have a literal huge aviary with a cage the size of a room, and even then you should still let it out occasionally to actually experience like. The outside. (Did you know you get bird harnesses. Like the ones for cats but for birds. So that you can take the bird outside without it flying away). And also some people section off their backyard with mesh around it so that the bird can have the whole garden without the danger of flying away. You can also train your bird to fly back to you even when outside but that’s more difficult so I’m not gonna go on about that here.
I’m just so confused as to why people would get a pet that can fly if they don’t want their pet to fly. Like come on. What’s the point. And flight training is so so cool and so rewarding. Your pet can FLY and you’re not going to let them?? You don’t want a little bird to come from the other side of the room and sit on your shoulder or up onto your hand like you’re an adventurer with a falcon for a best friend?
Whatever. I’m so mad that I can’t have a bird. They’re also probably the most loyal pets on the planet once you bond with them. Birds actually automatically favour one person over everyone else (you have to be careful that you don’t tip thst 60/40 scale into 100/0 if you don’t want the bird to attack everyone that comes near you. Insane) and you are their best friend if you only have one bird. A lot of birds are also really cuddly (I don’t know about lovebirds but I think they can be? Conures especially are (green-cheeked specifically because that’s the bird I was looking into)) and they can be very vocal and make little trills (ahhhh) and chirps. But they can also scream. Most birds are so so noisy (ESPECIALLY sun conures and macaws. Oh my god. They just screech all day I would die I think).
…Most pet birds (especially parrots) cannot be fed a seed-only diet. Birds can eat fruit, vegetables, berries, nuts and seeds (as treats), grains… other stuff that I’m forgetting… And they should be fed regularly, like two or three times a day. And their water also has to be changed regularly because they poop in it (especially if it’s low in the cage. Same with food ideally you should put the food higher up and not under any higher perches).
Some birds (thinking of African greys and macaws) do this thing called eye-pinning where they dilate and contract their pupils really fast to show that they’re interested in something (I think it can also show when they’re angry? Can’t remember) and it’s very cute. You can use it for taste-testing foods for the bird to see if they like it (birds have preferences. Some really hate sunflower seeds but love macadamia nuts and some are neutral towards them but hate almonds etc etc).
Birds are also really sensitive to the air they breathe! Humans have very strong lungs and we can survive a lot without even noticing but birds can’t. Anything that damages air quality can kill them really quickly if you’re not careful (I suspect it’s another contributor to the “pet birds have short lifespans” thing because people don’t know what killed them when in reality it was like. The dust). Cockatiels are very dusty birds (wing dust) and they usually need an air purifier in the room to keep the air clean (and also you probably shouldn’t get a cockatiel if you have a dust allergy). Scented candles can be dangerous to birds because they often burn oil, except for Yankee Candles which is apparently bird safe because they don’t use oil (did spend a lot of time verifying this, apparently one of the employees sent an email saying they have a pet cockatiel and regularly burn scented candles around it and the bird is fine so. But still). There’s also a type of cookware that’s extremely deadly to birds because it releases a chemical whenever it’s scraped that can kill them instantly so bird owners have to watch out for stuff like that.
Most houseplants are also very toxic to birds. You have to be very careful when letting your bird out and should never leave your bird unsupervised because of stuff like that, because one bite of a leaf can kill them. Parrots are generally tougher than smaller birds but they’re still very delicate.
The bird cage should also be cleaned regularly, including the bars of the cage. Removable trays at the bottom are good because then you can do it easily and just replace the newspaper or bedding and whatever. Perches should also be cleaned. Did you know bird poop doesn’t actually have a smell and if it does that means something’s probably wrong. Also have to inspect poop for signs of illness (which is why the newspaper is a good option so that you can actually see it properly).
Cages should also preferably be square (and MUCH larger than the stupid little Tweety Bird round cages). Round cages are awful for birds it makes them anxious when there are no corners to hide in. You know like how round tanks are bad for fish, it’s a similar thing. Your bird should be able to fly at least a little bit in the cage from perch to perch. If you’re at work regularly so you can’t let your bird out for most of the day then you need a big cage. And probably another bird to keep your bird company. They’re very social creatures. Cage should also be sturdy and off the ground, especially if you have other pets (dogs, cats) because they might try to knock over the cage. You have to also acclimate your dog or cat to be around the bird safely but you have to be VERY careful with that because it’s still a prey animal and your cat/dog are still predators and are going to want to kill the bird. I don’t really trust anything that says the cat/dog and bird are 100% besties because there’s still a very real chance your pet will just snap and kill them either accidentally or on purpose (once again birds are very delicate). If you’re flight training your bird you need to be especially careful because often the flapping of wings can set the pet off. I’ve seen some people keep their other pet in a cage while the bird does flight training so that they can get them used to seeing it so that they don’t get spooked.
…I have more but this is enough I think. Apologies I just really like birds and this info has given me nothing except the response of getting irrationally angry whenever I see a pet bird in an unhealthy living situation.
whao‼️‼️
i really want a pet pigeon (based on a love founded by another bird hyperfixation) but i haven’t actually done any research into keeping birds because i know realistically i can’t get one for years to come, at least, and i didn’t want to learn all about them as pets only to not be able to get one cause that would make me sad (so i learnt all about them in the wild and in history lol)
this is really interesting though, i did not know parrots were so sensitive. i mean i knew theyre hugely mistreated pets and it’s very hard to keep one alive and happy but i figured it wasn’t like. that hard, idk.
very thanks for the bird infodump!! it was really fascinating :3
