Heartland Ep. 1501 Review

(cross-posted on Facebook, as usual.) Season premieres are supposed to set the tone for the rest of the season, in my opinion. Viewers should be able to get some hints of what they can expect to see as the various plots unfold and what complications and character developments to look out for.

Moving Toward the Light by showrunner Heather Conkie has an absolute WINNER of an episode here. 15 seasons in, and she can still bring her "A" game. Everyone from top to bottom was excellent in this episode. 

Was it really 10 years ago that Amy was entranced along with the rest of us by Renard Perez and his liberty work? Gosh that doesn't seem so long ago, and yet 10 years is a long time, especially in the life of a TV show.

Just when we think Amy is about to be reunited with her old friend, we instead get Renard's protégé, Sylvie Fauchard. We find out Sylvie was apparently Renard's "second choice" for trainer when Amy turned him down for the Dark Horse tour.

Renard has apparently forgotten to email Amy to tell her Sylvie is on the way with her duo of problem horses: Zeus and Juniper.

(Side note: I'm not sure why they recycled the "Zeus" name here when it was another "Zeus" that nearly blinded Amy back in Season 7, but whatever; horses’ names don't have to be unique.)

From the beginning, I sensed the "problem" stemmed from Sylvie's favouritism. She was clearly babying Zeus and being much more solicitous of him. Juniper was being ignored, and he was not happy about it, to the point of turning on Zeus and Sylvie to make his displeasure known.

As to why this totally went over Sylvie's head despite both Renard and Amy bringing it to her attention is puzzling to me, and it's the one weak spot of the episode.

I would have liked a better explanation as to why she was "babying" Zeus other than the "I nursed him back to health" point. That's great, Sylvie, now stop ignoring Juniper and show him some love, too—unless you unconsciously blame him for Zeus' debilitating injury and are somehow punishing him by giving him the cold shoulder... Anyway, Sylvie threatens to leave after she gets huffy with Amy over her "advice" to stop coddling Zeus, and it's innocent little Lyndy's request that she stay and help plan a birthday surprise for her mama that makes her pause. Lyndy wants Sylvie to teach her how to dance with Harley. Friends, my eyes nearly teared up when Sylvie asks whose horse Harley is, and Lyndy says it's her daddy's. Sylvie comments how she hasn't met her daddy, and Lyndy informs her that Ty is "in heaven". Sylvie agrees to help, and teaches Lyndy a little liberty work with Harley, with Jack in tow, for some assistance with this "secret surprise" for Amy.

And speaking of secrets and surprises, Tim and Jessica are back from their galivanting. And as many of us guessed, they got married while on their travels. I'm really happy for Tim, as I haven't been this impressed with his choice in girlfriends since Casey. I think Jessica is really good for him, and a good fit, overall, with the family, despite her rancorous past with Lou.

The other plot line of note was Jack consulting with Lisa about "the future". She asks him if he'd have any regrets about slowing down at this stage in his life. Jack admits he'd regret not buying Mitch's herd. It seems Mr. Cutty, after being dumped by Lou, is divesting himself of his livestock and of his homestead of Aspen Grove.

Jack thinks he's too late to buy the herd after hearing from Fred Garland that they're available, but Mitch ultimately decides to turn down the other buyer and "keep it in the family". If this is the last we ever hear from Mitch, at least his last (off-screen) action is to do this good deed.

Meanwhile, Tim seems to be the one who wants to pull back from the cattle business and maybe just focus on his rodeo school. After all, he's married now. No idea where these newlyweds are going to live yet, but it's looking like the loft might be available... And why might it be available? 

Side note: Alisha Newton has been wiped from the opening credits. In fact, Georgie was not mentioned at all the entire episode (neither was Katie, but we know she's in future episodes). This could mean Georgie is either away studying, or training/competing with Equestrian Canada, as was hinted at during the Season 14 finale.

By the end of the episode, Sylvie has come 'round to accepting Juniper needed some lovin', too, and his behavior changes for the better. For Amy's (low-key) birthday celebration (was this her 30th?!), Sylvie gives a liberty demonstration, and invites Amy to do some, herself. The finale, though, is when Lyndy reveals her "secret" and brings Harley in for a little liberty work, too. Lyndy gives Harley the cue to give a bow, and the horse goes down on his front leg, delighting the family.

Sylvie admits she's envious of Amy and her life with her family; Amy admits she wonders what her life would have been like had she taken up Renard on his offer to tour with him, and seeing Sylvie is a glimpse into that life. It's interesting for us, too, as it gives us a chance to see how different Amy's life might have been.

Minor plot point: Lou wondering how she should move on her life now that Mitch is moving on... She makes an attempt to call Peter to maybe talk over what he said to her about still being in love with her and being totally NOT okay with her marrying someone else. She hangs up before Peter can answer, so we'll never know (at least at this point) what they would have said to each other.

Finally, we have a cute drawing Lyndy has made of the family at her "school" camp: a drawing that features a Man in the Moon—the Man being "Dada", telling Amy the moon is where Ty said he'd be. So clearly Lyndy has not forgotten her father. We wouldn't want her to forget him, either. The fact Amy didn't dissolve into tears right then shows her emotional strength has vastly improved since this time last year, and it's good for us to see, too; that healing from such a traumatic event is possible.

This was a near-perfect episode, and had elements of everything I've come to expect from a Heartland episode. Bravo, everyone! You endured so much to make this season happen, and I am already enthralled and eager for more.

Some quick thoughts about Heartland S15x01

A little busy this week/next few weeks, so for now just some quick thoughts:

- the spencer twins are more talkative than ever and its just so great to see! you can really see their bond with amber off camera coming through

- has it really been 10 years since dark horse?? imagine marvel-esque what if episode - what if amy had accepted renaud’s job haha. anyways, i love a good flashback (or two)

- amy doesn’t want to celebrate her birthday - and while i’m sure there are other factors such as ty not being there for her birthday for the first time, i’m with her. i never make a big deal of my own birthday. 

- lyndy is going to “school” or pre-school prep and i just want to see footage of that please

- tim and jessica are... MARRIED???? i guess the only way for couples to actually get married is for it to be off screen (ahem, caleb and cass)

- they went to macchu picchu? colour me jealous!!!!

- tim has “changed” and doesn’t want to be tied down and wants to keep life simple, while jack wants to take on more responsibility. bets on how long this will last?

- one of the horses is named juniper? why does that make me think of juniper and dagwood from riverdale hahhaa

- i understand, story wise why jack is ramping up and buying mitch’s herd BUUUUUT i kind of want to see lisa and jack travelling together

- no mention of georgie?? does this mean alisha is never coming back? is it just temporary? what does this mean? did I miss her? not really, but the episode was just really good and heartwarming overall. though i do hope we get some kind of explanation of where georgie is at some point , or else people may think she just perished into heartland lore like so many other characters.

- lyndy asking sylvie to dance with harley... and then seeing it by the end of the episode was SO CUTE!!!! the twins have come so far and are speaking so much more now. how many takes did you think they did so that each twin got to try it?

- love a good remi sighting!! :)

Changing Channels: Sarah Booth talks Heartland, working with Amber Marshall and horses!

The first episode of Season 15, titled "Moving Toward the Light," introduces us to "Sylvie," a performer for the equestrian show "Dark Horse." Back in Season 2, Amy was given the chance to be the star performer for "Dark Horse;" an opportunity that she turned down.

Sylvie, played by Sarah Booth, stepped into the role for Dark Horse. Sarah tells us about her character.

"10 years ago, Amy had the opportunity to become the head trainer of a show called Dark Horse, which was run by Renard. Amy turned down the job and I got it. Sylvie is a French Canadian horse trainer and the lead trainer for Dark Horse. She's been the lead trainer for 10 years now."

Being an experienced horsewoman, and a fan of the show, working on Heartland was a dream come true for Sarah.

"I have been dreaming of being on Heartland for so long because I grew up watching Heartland and I also grew up riding horses. It was not only a dream of mine, because I was a fan of the show, but also a dream of mine because I could bring two of my passions together, which was incredible. I'd never worked closely with horses on set to that extent.

"It was such an amazing experience! Keeps you on your toes. Our director for the episode Pierre Tremblay said they don't like to listen to continuity notes. You have to work with what they throw at you in each scene. It was amazing ... I grew up riding dressage, doing some eventing and doing local fairs, pony club, that kind of stuff."

Sarah had nothing but good things to say about the set, and about working with Amber herself.

"It was honestly awesome to watch Amber work on set because she knows the horses; knows how to choose them. A big part of producing a show is being in the moment. It was just amazing to watch her be like, okay, so this horse won't do that. Or this horse bites a little bit. So let's not put that one in the scene, but we can work around it. You know, she just knows this world so well. It was really fun to adapt on set to the specific choreography."

When asked how being a Heartland fan affected her experience on set, she had this to say:

"Working on set was fantastic. Just going to the ranch, you know ... Heartland is also my mom's number one favorite show. So just being able to be there, share photos on the day. I wouldn't share them with anyone else, but [sharing with] my mom was very special. I think that was a really a great experience to kind of be able to share that with her. Just kind of seeing all the iconic things ... I'm in the barn; I'm in the house, that's Grandpa's truck, that's Shadow. I got to ride Shadow for my riding lesson."

Working with children and animals is one of the more exciting things to do when filming -- and Sarah agrees.

"Any time you're with the Spencer twins [Emmanuella and Ruby Spencer, who play Lyndy Borden] is a good time. They keep you on your toes. Whenever they were on set, everyone gets really excited. [There were] definitely, good, funny moments .., they throw some improv in there -- they're kids, or they say a line in a certain way that you're like, oh my gosh, I would have never imagined coming out like that, but it works so well. That was great.

"The horses ... sometimes you're doing a scene and it's a little bit more dramatic and all of a sudden [the] horse just decides to start eating your hair or bumping you in the face. You just have to keep on going. I would say the animals and the children have just all on our toes,"

As for future projects, Sarah is currently working on a TV series that is close to home.

"I'm working on a television show right now that shoots in a kind of, not exactly my hometown, but my home area near Montreal. And it's based on the best-selling books of a Canadian author named Louise Penny, and the series is called Three Pines. It's a detective series. I'm really, really excited for it to be coming out next year. It's for Amazon and I'm just happy to be home shooting, close to the family; it's really great."

The 15th season of Heartland starts Oct. 17, 2021, and airs on Sundays on CBC at 7 p.m. (7:30 p.m. in Newfoundland).

I'm so tired of Lou's endless storylines with all these men. I really hope that Lou and Peter will get back together and then we could move on from this. I mean, I love Mitch but I just can't deal with this.

I loved little Lyndy! She talked so much! The scene where she told Sylvie that her daddy is in heaven was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. I love that Ty is still present though and I love seeing Amy and Lyndy together. When Amy got pregnant I thought that it wasn't necessary but I really love that little girl and I hope that they never re-cast Lyndy. The twins are good. Also they love Amber I'm sure and Amber loves them! I love to see Amy as a mother even though It's also sad that Lou and Peter are divorced and Peter is not around much and Ty is dead. I'm so frustrated with the way they've handled Lou's love life. I don't mind love triangles if they are done well, but I feel like they've been throwing Lou "scraps". I think at first they had to let Gabriel go, so they brought in Kevin, but then Kevin got other work, so they had to play with this constant back and forth with them and now they are back to Peter. In theory, Lou and Mitch could have been really, really interesting, which is why it's such a shame to me that they were never really given a chance.

I don't blame the actors for wanting to do other jobs, but I also can't help but wonder how the writers would have handled Lou's love life if either Gabe or Kevin were "tied to the show" like, for example, Graham was.

As much as I would love to have Lisa in every episode, at least they've established that Lisa is a traveller, she has business elsewhere, and it works for her story. Tim's also not in every episode, so that way Jessica doesn't have to be either. When Georgie was still around, her guys weren't in every episode either, which makes sense because teenagers live apart and have other commitments. When it comes to relationships you have around Lou's age, typically, you spend a lot of time together, maybe you move in, marriage might come up, etc. which is where one of the biggest problems lie. They could do a repeated storyline with Lou and "her guy" where she lives at Heartland and he's away 50% of the time, but that's getting kind of old, especially with everyone else having that kind of storyline. I'm not saying every couple spends all their time together, but the point of the show is to show that relationship so we can root for it. If most of it happens outside the scenes, how can we really get attach to that? I mean, that's how I feel about Cass and Caleb; I find them interesting in theory, but that's pretty much all I have because we've only gotten handful of scenes with them despite them being a thing since season 8. Caleb is a supporting character at this point, but Lou is a major character, so she deserves better than that, in my opinion.

Also, the longer things go on, the more ridiculous it seems that everyone has to live at Heartland. For the concept of the show, it works, but realistically, you have to wonder why is that. I think, especially now with Amy and Ty not being a thing, part of the audience wants to follow a romance of somekind, where you have the butterflies every time the couple is on screen and you see them plan the future. I think the risk with Peter is that people are tired of him already or they are tired of this situation with Lou/Mitch/Peter, so the starting point is not very good. I was interested to see Lou and Mitch develop more because while they had their whole back and forth, there was a promise of something new there, something we had never seen before. At this point it seems they'll end up going forward with Lou and Peter, but I have to wonder is there anything new there to keep us interested? I can understand the appeal of Take 2.0., but they really, really have to work for it to win people over.

I personally don't think Lou needs a man, but I also feel like she's, deep down, a very romantic person and enjoys sharing her life with someone and all that jazz, so maybe in a way it would also feel like denying her that wouldn't seem fair for the character. I don't know...

I have a feeling they'll stick with the Spencer twins for as long as possible. I think when it came to Katie's character, all these recasts were done out of the necessity; first the twins weren't comfortable in front of camera, then Julia moved to the States, Alex was interested in doing other, more fitting roles and now we have Baye who hopefully will be "the final Katie". Unless something changes drastically with the Spencer Twins, I don't see them quitting any time soon as they love Heartland so much. I'm interested to see more of their acting this season!
