The Hades/Persephone Tango

At the end of loop 2, approximately halfway through Persephone’s storyline, she knocks into a old-fashioned radio in Hades’ office. It starts up the song Will Soon be a Woman. Persephone asks “Have we danced to this before?” to which Hades replies “once or twice” and Persephone offers her hand: “let’s make it a third.”

There is the undercurrent of amusement in the audience, who know that ‘once or twice’ is a gross understatement. But it’s a very sweet response from Hades, who knows by now not to overwhelm Persephone by letting on how often they repeat the same ritual.

The two begin a slow dance in the office, which, as the music increases in tempo and complexity, moves out into the Troy town square, and an intricate tango.

Now, unlike some, I am not a regular follower of Hades or Persephone. I love their stories, but the crowds sometimes get a bit much for me. Last night, I was intent on following Mallory Gracenin’s portrayal of Persephone while we are lucky enough to have her back in the show for a couple of months. Coupled with Sam Booth as Hades, this really is a powerhouse of performance, with heart-rending emotion and side-splitting comedic moments. (Hades saying into Persephone’s mouth ‘it’s fake’, referring to the flower he had given her, was particularly amusing.)

Long story short, I don’t follow Persephone or Hades all that often, and therefore usually miss this tango as I am somewhere else in the show. Due to this, I haven’t before noticed the synchronicities between this dance, and dances that happen elsewhere and between other characters.

At one point during the dance, Persephone and Hades separate, connected only by grasped hands, as Persephone circles Hades. In that moment, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Neoptolomus and Patroclus, perhaps dancing the similar movements almost at the same time in Mycenae as Hades and Persephone tango in Troy.

Patroclus has been mortally wounded, and found by Neoptolomus, the two begin an intricate and devastating dance as Neoptolomus tries to, and ultimately fails to, save him. He is propped up by Neoptolomus, the two embrace frequently, and as they separate, Patroclus circles Neoptolomus connected only by grasped hands, before collapsing, rolling across the floor still connected to Neoptolomus.

It is a dance of overwhelming desperation on both sides of the coin. Neoptolomus’ desperate attempt to save Patroclus, and Hades’ desperate attempt to remind Persephone of who she is, and the connection between them. Patroclus and Persephone circle their loved ones, touchable but not reachable.

I started wondering, how many other dances happening throughout the show are reflected in Persephone and Hades’ tango? Iphigenia being carried through the streets by Patroclus. Apollo clutching at Cassandra as he opens her eyes to prophecy. Persephone’s confident steps as she approaches Hades mirrored in Hecuba’s bravado to stand off against the Greek Army. Persephone driving Hades back towards the office in the same way Polymestor drives Polydorus back to the wall after drugging him.

This story, this labyrinth of emotion, was all created for Persephone. And as she reaches the half-way point of her own journey and it’s starting to come back, the mirror held up to her actions, reflecting the movements of others around Troy and Mycenae, are all the more poignant.

Waterfall!

Oh my god!

Can you believe it?

My friend and I went to Key West last night. We hung out by the pool, then walked to Mallory square for the sunset, and watched some street performers. So many people congregated to watch the sunset, and many even clapped as it set behind the horizon. I thought that was really sweet.

I have less than 3 weeks left in the Keys. I’m soaking up every fun moment while I’m still here and starting to get really sentimental about how much I already know I’ll miss this place. 🥹🫶🏻

And to be quite frank, I’m terrified of what’ll happen after I leave here, but that’s how I know I’m on the right path.

February 3 - Molly D’s fourth night in Key West. Feels so good to be at our final winter destination!

Our friends Frank and Mo stayed a couple of nights in Marathon with us and then sailed with us to Key West.

We arrived on Tuesday and were early enough to take advantage of the Boat House’s happy hour from 4-6:30. 4:00 is really early to eat supper, but arrival after 4:30 means there will be a wait. The appetizer menu and selective drinks and beer are all half price. We made a meal from our appetizers of ribs, tempura lobster tails, flat iron steak, fish bites, and cheesy bread. Mo and I got half-price margaritas ($6!). What a meal!

On Tuesday night we also took in our first Key West sunset from the rooftop deck at the hotel.

The days have been sunny and warm. Besides walking the town, we have spent time lounging on the sun deck (in the shade!) and cooling off in the saltwater pool.

The farmers market is held every Thursday at Truman park. I was so disappointed that the meatball and pasta sauce vendor wasn’t there! I did enjoy an ice cold cup of watermelon juice. Ahhhh!

Today David and I enjoyed a hot dog and fries lunch at BO’s Fish Wagon. David decided to forego his usual fish sandwich for a hot dog. BO’s isn’t much to look at. In fact, the place looks like it should be condemned. Their kitchen is the typical food truck trailer. The seating is limited and very rustic. Chickens and roosters roam freely looking for a handout. The roof is rusty corrugated tin and the wood holding the roof and rafters up is of questionable durability. The roof was built around several trees—easier than removing the trees. In a nut shell, the “structure” is made from whatever building materials were salvaged or found. If you weren’t familiar with BO’s, you would keep on walking past it not even entertaining the idea of eating there. Your loss.

Tonight we walked along the waterfront and watched the Celebrity Summit leave port at 5:00. Any cruise ship that is in port must leave before sunset so as to not “spoil” the view. We didn’t hang around for the sunset; hunger got the better of us.

Now those are large “baskets” on the back of these tricycles!

Since being in KW, we have noticed that KW is far less busy than last year. There are many unoccupied slips at the marina. Last year all slips were full. Duvall and surrounding streets are not crowded. Many restaurants have unoccupied tables. The street performers at the sunset celebration number about 6 and most of them suck. Years ago there were a dozen or more performers including a bagpiper, cats that jumped through hoops, a fire eater, a flaming baton twirler, an escape artist in a straight jacket, a strong man who would balance a stove on his chin, a magician and musicians. Mallory Square was wall to wall people. Today I could easily see to the other end of the square. David and I like the reduction in the crowds but some of the flavor of the city has been lost. Unfortunately, the iguanas are still here and it’s not uncommon to see them strutting along the marina’s boardwalk or around the pool.

Not the Geiger Key Restaurant and Marina. Yesterday morning, the FBI raided a private home on Geiger Key. By SUVS with mounted turrets and water rafts. The agents themselves wore body armor and carried semiautomatic rifles. The home was located on Mars Lane. The raid was part of a "human trafficking" investigation. Several persons were taken into custody. The raid began with agents announcing via a blow horn they were there and had a search warrant. Followed by a flash-bang grenade being thrown into the house. Soon followed by additional flash-bangs and smoke bombs. Geiger Key is a sedate key. The last place a purported criminal activity as described would be expected to be taking place. From human trafficking to church going. A key question for Christians in the 21st century is whether the church is a hospital for sinners or an exclusive club for saints. In the recent decade, more have come to view "the church not a museum of saints, but a hospital for sinners." Pope Francis recently said, "I see clearly that the thing the Church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity. I see the Church a field hospital after battle." Some interpret Francis' words to mean "a hospital for sinners, not a museum." The high cost of college is being attacked in another fashion: By some colleges cutting tuition in half. The New York Times ran an excellent article on the tuition cut 12/14 in an article by Anemona Hartocollis: "A Sign Tuition Is Too High: Some Colleges Are Slashing It In Half." The "slash" is being referred to in academic circles as a "tuition reset." A relatively new approach. Presently limited to small colleges. A leader in the field is Colby Sawyer College in New Hampshire. Its tuition was $46,000. This semester $17,500. Applications increased by 75 percent. Today a significant one in aviation history. On this day in 1903, the Wright brothers made the first successful airplane flight. The event occurred in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Orville piloted the gasoline powered propeller driven plane. The plane stayed afloat 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. Steve Thompson wrote of a 1970's Key West character called Love 22. Love 22 was a Key West street performer. He was also in New Orleans but Key West was warmer. He really stood out at Mallory Square. He handed out 22 dollar bills there. Twenty two cents apiece he would holler. He never stopped talking, that's all he would do. Everything he said added up to 22. He wore a top hat and tails in a formal black suit. With an American flag on his hat. What a hoot. He was at sunset everyday in the 70's. Then he suddenly disappeared from the Keys. New Orleans gave him the key to the city one year. Then all at once he showed up back here. summary: what could be better than vacationing in Key West? there’s swimming, hammocks, and best of all, key lime pie. add Han Jisung in the mix and you have a wonderful but slightly crazy day.

The scolding Florida sun beams down on yours and Jisung’s heads. You’d been walking through the streets of Key West just seeing all the sights and enjoying each other’s company for a few hours now, and you both were thinking it was time for a little rest.

“Come on, Jisung! We’re almost there!” you pull his hand to keep him from falling too far behind you.

“You said that two blocks ago!” he whines, following you nonetheless.

You turn the corner a moment later to find your destination.

“Look! I found it! I told you I knew where I was going.” you boasted. Jisung just huffed with a slight pout.

You enter the shop and instantly your eyes scan the room in wonder; absolutely everything is key lime flavored. There are olive oils, juices, candies, even dog treats, all with that citrus tang that so many people love. You decided to come to this shop because what better place to have key lime pie than in Key West!

Pulling Jisung, who was preoccupied with some free samples of key lime candy, over to the pie and ice cream counter, the two of you order some refreshing treats to help you cool off from the blistering heat. Jisung orders a scoop of strawberry key lime ice cream claiming strawberry makes everything taste better, while you stick with a classic slice of the island’s famous key lime pie.

Just outside of the shop’s back doors is a small patio with tables, plants and even a serene little koi pond. You and Jisung sit at a table placed near the street but still underneath the patio awning’s shade to people watch as you enjoy your sweet treats.

The two of you sit in silence as you eat your snacks, watching all the strangers passing by, listening to the various sounds of the lively area. Because of his incessant whining, you occasionally feed Jisung small bites of your pie.

You finish your snacks, but remain at the table for a little while, resting as much as you can after walking in the heat for so long.

“Now that we’re all good and rested, can we go exploring some more?” Jisung asks with hope in his eyes, already standing up from the table.

“Of course, baby,” you stand up from the table as Jisung takes your hand and leads you to the sidewalk, “where to?”

Jisung thinks for a minute with a quizzical look on his face, “Ummm.... this way!”

He pulls you in the direction he decided on with no idea where he’s heading. He doesn’t really care as long as he’s with you.

The two of you walk hand in hand about four blocks until you begin to hear faint music and the hum of conversing crowds. Curious as to the cause of the commotion, Jisung slightly speeds up his pace. Entering the crowded social hub, which you’ve come to learn is called Mallory Square, you take in your surroundings; people in costumes, street performers and salesmen are spread around the vast area, entertaining locals and tourists alike.

“Oh look, (y/n)! There’s boats!”

Jisung excitedly scampers off to the dock to watch the multiple tour boats sail past the square, you following like a lost puppy. He sits down on the edge of the dock, his legs hanging off, and you join him, staring at the wide open water. Children around you squeal as they chase each other and fly tiny drones as far as they can over the water. The street performers’ music lulls you into a calm state of happiness. You lean your head on Jisung’s shoulder, his head plopping on top of yours.

After dinner, you walk back to your resort to relax after the long and hot day.

“Babe, lets go see if one of the hammocks are open,” Jisung suggests once entering the small resort grounds to which you happily agree. To your excitement, one of the large hammocks that are placed on the small private beach is open and waiting for you and your boyfriend.

“Okay... um... this could be tricky.”

Jisung stares at the hammock as he tries to figure out how to safely get both of you on the seat without ending up in the sand underneath instead.

“Alright. Here’s what we’re going to do. I’ll lie down in the middle and then you just lay on top of me so I can balance it. Sound good?” he asks.

“You’re the hammock expert,” you raise your hands teasingly. He smirks at your comment.

Jisung climbs onto the wobbly lounge chair with about as much grace as a newborn deer, but eventually lies down and gets the hammock into a still and balanced position before motioning for you to hop on with him. You lean over and place your hands on his shoulders, swinging your leg over his lap, then finally lying your body across his. The close proximity of your faces does not go unnoticed by Jisung.

“Well hello there,” he teases.

“Shut up,” you retort with a smile.

Jisung watches and does his best to keep the hammock balanced as you maneuver over to his side. Once you are comfortable, his arm wraps around your waist, pulling you as close to him as possible. He places a chaste kiss to the top of your head, pulling the hand not around your waist to caress your face and run his fingers through your hair. You lean up and place a kiss on his jaw, being the only place you can reach in this position.

A calm silence comes over the two of you, just soaking in each others’ presence. You can tell Jisung has something on his mind after a while, but choose not to ask about it knowing he will tell you whatever it is when he’s ready, which turns out to be sooner than you think. He moves his head slightly to be able to look down at you and see your face before speaking.

“Thank you for planning this vacation, (y/n). You and I both know I have a hard time deciding when to take a break, relax, and forget about work. This trip has really helped me unwind and clear some of the stress I’ve been under lately. Thank you so much. I’m so happy to be here in this shaky hammock, holding you in my arms. I love you, (y/n).”

“Jisung, I would swim the entire ocean for you. You know that? I love you more than anything in this world.”

With that, the two of you snuggle even closer together, staying silent. The love in the air is almost suffocating; your lungs can hardly handle it. That’s the way it usually is with Jisung. He never fails to take your breath away with his never ending love.

Soon, the sun has gone completely down and the light from the resort is only illuminating your hammock enough for you to see Jisung’s silhouette.

Getting off the hammock ends exactly how you pictured it; lying in the sand with Jisung on top of you, momentarily squishing you with his weight before he pulls himself up, laughing.

“I thought I was going to be a lot smoother than that,” he bashfully rubs the back of his neck. You just giggle at him, pulling him back to the gate into the pool area.

At the late hour, the small pool near the bar is completely empty with only a few stray people talking and enjoying drinks at the outdoor bar. The tiny fountains from the pillars by the wall send streams of water into the pool. The water looks increasingly inviting the longer you stand there. You and Jisung exchange glances.

“You thinking what I’m thinking?” you ask him with a smirk.

“Oh yeah. Do you know who you’re talking to?” he jokes back.

“Race you upstairs!” you yell before taking off toward the outdoor staircase that leads to your room at the resort, getting a head start on Jisung.

“Hey! Cheater!” he yells, laughing, chasing after you.

Once back in the pool area, now changed into your swimwear, Jisung immediately jumps in the deeper end without a second thought. You laugh at your crazy childish boyfriend, opting to walk over to the stairs on the other side of the pool to step in instead.

The pool water is warm but not too warm. The lights on the bottom reflect onto Jisung’s bare chest and face as he swims closer to you, wrapping his arms around your waist. He smiles cheekily at you before dunking you under the water. He doesn’t hold you under though; he simply swims over into the deep end to avoid your inevitable wrath.

“Han Jisung!” you cough, water running down your face and into your eyes and mouth. Once you take notice of his position, you begin chasing after him. You catch up to him eventually, dunking him under in return, holding him under for a second for extra emphasis.

“Okay, okay! Truce! We’re even!” he shouts.

Quickly, your giggles turn into soft gazes. Jisung suddenly grabs you and holds you in his arms like a bride.

“What are you-”

“Just lay back. I want to hold you while you float.”

You obey his instructions, a slight blush to your cheeks at his boldness. You relax in his arms, leaning your head back into the water, eyes closed. He carries you around the pool, occasionally spinning you in slow circles, just watching you and enjoying holding you in his arms.

All of a sudden, the calm surface of the pool is interrupted by large droplets of rain; expected in Florida, just not in this calm romantic moment. Rain drops fall onto your lifted face until Jisung lifts your head up and pulls you with him until the two of you are under the small roof covering that hangs just barely over the pool from the bar. The fountain streams combines with the heavy rain and the crashing of waves just yards away drown out all other sounds.

Despite you being able to reach the bottom of the pool, Jisung turns your attention toward him as he wraps your legs around his waist and leans back against the pool wall.

“We might as well just hang out in here while the rain pours. We would have to run back to the room with wet towels around us,” he refers to the two pool towels you had laid on a chair before you got in the pool that are now sopping wet. Staying in the pool was probably the best option.

“Sounds good to me,” you reply, leaning your head on his shoulder, your face almost hidden in his neck.

You wait for a while for the rain to die down, just enjoying each other’s company for the time being. Jisung hums a soft song as you run your hands through his wet hair.

“Hey, I think the rain is letting up,” Jisung mentions after a long while of complete silence, “Should we make a run for it?”

You lift your head up from his shoulder to check out the state of the rain.

“Yeah, we better, otherwise we will be here all night.”

Jisung walks over to the stairs, your body still wrapped around his. He releases you, stepping up the stairs and grabbing your wet towels before taking your hand and walking quickly in the direction of the stairs to your room, leaving a trail of wet sandy footprints. The rain falls on you causing laughs and light squeals to erupt from both of you.

“Hey, (y/n), I bet I can beat you to our room this time,” he challenges, still not over his loss from your first race, “last one there has to buy the other a slice of key lime pie tomorrow.” You smile at him with a smug look, already making your way up the stairs.

“You’re on.”

You take off around the corner of the outdoor hallway that leads to your room, positive that you will beat your boyfriend; however, Jisung has other plans. He catches up to you and quickly throws you over his shoulder, preventing you from racing him.

“Hey! That’s not fair! Put me down Han Jisung!” you exclaim, kicking your legs and lightly hitting his back.

He walks swiftly to your room, ignoring your protests, and touches the door. He sets you down in front of him, smiling at the adorably grumpy look on your face.

“I win, sweetheart,” he leans down and places a small kiss on your nose, “and that means you owe me some key lime pie.”

You give him an unimpressed look, making him giggle.

“Don’t worry, baby. I’ll share it with you.”

Ryan had decreed that I was to be parading as his sister during tea the previous evening, though it wouldn’t be known until the first ball when he would need me for distraction techniques. Who wouldn’t be busy admiring the newly debuted Cromwell sibling? Especially one that had been kept quiet for so long. He needed a reason to explain why he was going into the Bradley casino, a nagging younger sister who had only just returned to Laurelia was the perfect cover. It was nothing beyond a scouting mission, the less I knew, the better really. It was definitely best to keep quiet on being Ryan’s sister until the latest point possible, it would never do for an aristocrat seen to be serving other people. They were always the ones being served, of course.

The following morning was more than a little shocking. Alec Bradley was grumbling into a teacup and dressed as though he was going to work at the tea parlour. I managed to stun him into gaping at me like some attraction at a fair. Then, later on, I nearly dropped my tea tray in the tea parlour as Ewan Bradley appeared as a customer.

Alec was refusing to serve him and had shoved me in his direction before I got a chance to take a look at Ewan’s face. He was just as surprised to see me working in a tea parlour belonging to the Cromwell’s. Apparently, the Byron family had already been trying to tarnish my reputation with others to ensure I wouldn’t return.

“As much as I would love to hear the exact details, I have other customers to attend to,” I started, checking over my shoulder to look over the shop.

“I’ll have lunch with you then if that’s okay?” Ewan’s proposition took me by surprise, but I nodded and smiled at him before returning back to take care of the other customers.

It was the start of my daily routine. It didn’t vary a lot. Breakfast would be spent teasing Alec, who would usually just grunt at me while I was pouring his tea. I spent my time analysing his preferences to make the perfect cup, which irritated him greatly much to my delight. Then lunchtime would be spent with Ewan in the square, where I would catch up on the gossip and chaos I had left behind at the Byron household. Then Noel was starting to come into the parlour on a daily basis now. It began as an afternoon thing, he liked to flirt with anything that moved was the impression Alec gave me, but Noel was smart enough to ensure that it was always me who served him regardless of how busy or empty we were. Then he came in one time to ask me about lunch.

His face dropped when I mentioned Ewan, an expression that clouded over and I couldn’t read exactly what he was thinking before his usual charming persona came back in full force. He raised the back of my hand to his lips, kissing the knuckles, and giving me a smile that was fully capable of making me swoon.

“I will have to start arriving earlier and intercepting you then,” he promised before we continued our daily interactions.

“Mallory,” Harry was wearing a deep frown that was silently making me panic. I’d just come back from my lunch with Ewan, and he had walked me back as he always insisted. “I need to talk to you when things have calmed down.”

I nodded solemnly, wondering instantly what it could be about as I dove dutifully into my work. The pace never ceased throughout the afternoon, keeping my feet and body busy, though my mind was still lingering on Harry’s words. I always tried to be the best I could in my work, but something had obviously caused offence at some point. I kept on my best graces as I flitted about the shop until Noel grabbed my forearm while I was taking his order.

“Your smile doesn’t reach your eyes, are you okay?” Noel was strangely sincere, no ulterior motive as I felt his eyes studying me and peeling everything away.

“I’m just tired that’s all,” I brushed it off with a twist of my lips. “It’s a busy shift.”

Then we had the biggest surprise of all as the café began to quieten down finally and we started the cleanup duties between the three of us. Ryan strolled in after ignoring Alec and me calling out to say we were closed and laughed brightly before any of us looked at him.

“I need to borrow Mallory, I assumed you two could finish without her?” It wasn’t going to be anything that Harry refused. It came from Ryan as the gesture from the head of the family was given to me to go and collect my things.

It was still taking a lot of getting used to coming up the drive to the Cromwell family manor. I was used to grandeur, but nothing on this scale, and especially not being treated as an equal and not being required to use the servant’s entrance. My usual path to go and bathe was intercepted before I had much of a choice. A couple of maids had appeared and taken my things to my room before Ryan ushered me into the family parlour.

Tea was already laid out. This had been appropriately planned I could tell, especially with the quantity of food present, since it was renown that I would eat vast amounts after working and even more after a shift like today. I had heard the joke that I could eat a horse without any assistance, but then I did do a lot of running about in general.

I didn’t even think about what I was doing. I was preparing all the tea as I would have done at the Byron household, ensuring that the blend wasn’t over brewed and that Ryan had the exact level of milk that he liked in his tea. I had seen him enough times at breakfast to know where his level was.

“You have impeccable etiquette. I don’t think most socialites are as neat as you in anything,” Ryan broke the silence that had been settled in between us as I was pouring the tea.

“Thank you,” I quietly replied. It still made me feel uncomfortable to receive compliments, the way I had been brought up and taught at the previous manor was that no comment was the sign of a job well done. Otherwise, it was risking the displeasure of the house mistress.

“We’re going to the casino tomorrow night, so you’re not at the parlour tomorrow as we need to go dress shopping,” Ryan explained as he gestured towards my well-known weakness of scones with a jar of jam and clotted cream were present. “Harry will cover for you at the parlour.”

It was comfortable between us at least. I had nothing to hide from Ryan, as I felt my body relax from the tense afternoon. He explained that he was after a painting that had originally belonged to his grandfather, and there were rumours that it was being housed in the casino belonging to Logan Bradley. But if he just turned up on his own, then he wouldn’t be able to verify anything. He would be sent back fairly swiftly, but turning up with an unknown woman on his arm who he claimed to be his sister returning from abroad would buy him time for certain. She was likely to be harassed by men who claimed to be gentlemen, which brought out a bitter laugh in time for Harry to arrive back from the parlour.

“Mallory?” Ryan’s head was tilted towards me, a deep frown of concern on his face.

“Apologies, but I’m beginning to think that the previous family I worked for had very different circumstances and ways of treating the staff,” I began. It wasn’t a pleasant story, but leaving hadn’t come to me out of the blue. Leonard hadn’t been the only issue pushing me. “The Byron family worked in ways that I assumed all other aristocratic families worked. They aren’t as influential with the Bradleys as others, but I was trained to be a Lady from the moment I was born. I was given the same education in etiquette as any of the legitimate children, but they always refused to say who was even suspected to be my father. The Head Butler was always very hands-on with any female, but then I was an exception constantly. Where he told and scolded others, he would merely correct my actions, and it ensured that I was always isolated among the maids and staff for getting special treatment. So my theory is that my mother was his favoured bed warmer, but I have no real proof aside from the way he treated me. I was also brought up mostly as the heir’s dance partner, I had to be able to perform in public perfectly. Which then also did allow for Leonard to showcase his abilities at the balls and things. It proved that he was worthy as husband material to the higher-ups, and maybe increase the standing of the family from the lower aristocratic tiers,” I paused, taking a mouthful of tea and hating that I was so predictable as my favourite blend was in the pot. “Since I was gifted the title of Governess as well, then I was to act less like the maids and more like the Ladies of the house. It was a few days after I had come of marriageable age that I was called into Lady Byron’s study. I was to assist Leonard in ‘controlling his urges’, and I accepted that with the look of the room weighing down on me. It became clear that I wasn’t expected to get married anytime soon, and especially not before the heir was engaged at the very least. It wasn’t going to be negotiable, I found out that night time anyway as Leonard didn’t even hesitate to come to my room. I was to teach him how to pleasure a woman apparently, the unspoken extra duties of Governess and why I was better kept than the maids,” my chuckle was dry as I paused for another mouthful of tea. I could feel the weight of the room on me.

“What pushed you to leave?” Harry couldn’t stop himself, disgusted with the way that some aristocrats behave.

“I had a third pregnancy scare. And I knew exactly what would happen if I was pregnant, I would be dismissed and turned out on the street without thought, regardless of what Leonard would whisper into my ear at night. His mother would simply never allow a Governess to be in such a state and unmarried. At best, I would be married to someone of their choice and stuck in it, but the general pattern when the maids were pregnant was to dismiss them without a second thought. References were never given either, so it would be impossible for them to work again in a decent house. They liked to punish the girls, they saw it as they paid their wages and thus owned them,” I frowned, staring into my cooling cup of tea. “I had also noticed that in the recent months, I had been brought along as Olivia’s Governess in some fine dresses when attending balls and the likes. I was being shown off as a breeding horse to try and ensure a relationship with a higher house. Ewan Bradley was one of those who knew me,” I locked eyes with Harry, who had a shocked expression. “He would usually be the only gentleman of the evening-”

Ryan’s scoffing noise broke my voice. His disdain at my words were apparent before I continued.

“His hands would stay in an appropriate place on me, where others would try to grope me or even force me to the corridors outside of the room for their fun, but Lady Byron was eager for me to pursue Ewan of course, so I was allowed to scold and dismiss the lower statused males,” I explained. “And Ewan became accustomed to my pleas. He was trying to get evidence of what the Byron family was doing to ensure that Logan would disgrace them, but we had to continue meeting up as we did for that. Then I was being pressured to sleep with Ewan and most importantly, ensure a pregnancy sooner rather than later to enhance the position of the family.”

“I see,” Ryan was looking thoughtful as Harry then collected all the tea together, clearing up in a hurry.

“Could you help please, Mallory?” Harry pointedly asked, his eyes flicking to the second tray with empty plates on. It was also going to give him a chance to talk to me privately about earlier I was hoping as I gathered everything together before balancing it on my hip to push through the door.

It was an awkward silence between us as we reached the kitchens. The staff were absent while we began to sort through the dirty dishes.

“I had seen you with Ewan on lunches,” Harry explained. “I wasn’t sure of your relationship with him, but you are going to be introduced as Ryan’s sister. A Cromwell cannot be associated with a Bradley,” he lowered his voice purposely. “It would create far too many problems for Mr Cromwell if someone has photos of you both.”

“I… hadn’t thought of that,” I admitted. “My apologies, I will cease.” I nodded in affirmation as Harry smiled fondly at me.
