Napoleon Builds an Arc in Paris, France
We walked around the circle at the base of the Arc de Triomphe, surrounded by the chaos of traffic and the sound of automobile horns. There were inscriptions in the ground underneath the vault of the arch marking the location of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  Paying our respects, we happened upon the evening ceremony of the lighting of the torch.   This observance of one soldier, buried here…

Ohio Winery: Powell Village Craft Winery
Taking a seat at the beautiful rustic bar at Powell Village Craft Winery, I couldn’t help but notice the young lady sitting next to me talking into her phone.   Overhearing her conversation, she was trying to set a date to move to Colorado.  Working out the logistics, she sat in front of her computer enjoying a glass of wine. I ordered a wine flight and soon thereafter, Katie had wrapped up her…

The Mount of Olives, A Place of Death, Ascension and Everlasting Life
Standing at the overlook on the Mount of Olives, a breathtaking view spreads before me to include the Temple Mount and the city of Jerusalem.  Once flourishing with olive trees, the site has become a holy place connected with events surrounding Jesus’ death and ascension into heaven. Tombs dating back to the First Temple period remain in the Kidron Valley outside of the city walls. The cemetery…

The Upper Room in Mount Zion
Our tour bus was making its way back towards Jerusalem to explore the hillside town of Mount Zion, a short walk outside of the Zion Gate.  During the time of Jesus, it was located within the city walls of Jerusalem as noted on the Madaba Map until the Byzantine walls were erected in the 16th century. Mount Zion is most known as the location of the Upper Room where Jesus and His disciples took…

Royalty at its Finest at Windsor Castle!
Our tour bus arrived in the regal town of Windsor and parked near the train station before we stumbled out into the winter chill.  Located thirty miles west of London, Windsor Castle overlooks the fertile Berkshire landscape of England and its battlements can be seen from miles around.  One of three magnificent residences of London’s royal family, Windsor Castle, has been inhabited by the rulers…

The Apple Barn, Pigeon Forge
The Apple Barn story began in the early 1900s,  when the barn was built by the  Mullendore family.  Here, they raised cattle and planted tobacco.  Seventy years later, the barn and property were purchased by the Hicks and Kilpatrick family and they planted their first apple trees in 1976. A Visit to the Apple Barn is a tradition for the many families that visit Gatlinburg on a regular basis.  I…

Lunch at Teaberry's, Springfield, Ohio
Update:  As of December 26, 2022, Teaberry’s and Heart of Ohio Gift Shop has closed.  Restaurants can bring on a nostalgic feeling and I felt that as I entered Teaberry’s in Springfield.  I remembered visiting craft stores when I was younger and vividly recollected the menu of home-cooked meals.  I was so happy to be visiting here again to try some of the cooking that reminded me of my favorite…

The Island, Pigeon Forge
The Island at Pigeon Forge is a vibrant entertainment complex with activities, shopping and restaurants.  Located on Parkway, the main thoroughfare, our family was ready to end our day watching the sunset and exploring the Island. The girls were excited for the shopping, the guys were hungry for the restaurants and Nolan couldn’t wait to ride the Ferris wheel.   To work up an appetite, we…

Hillbilly Golf in Gatlinburg, TN
Of the handful of times we have vacationed in Gatlinburg, Hillbilly Golf is one of our favorite, family activities. Our favorite part of Hillbilly Golf was traveling up the incline.  We boarded the car and made the slow climb to the top where we reached the first hole. Before tackling the putt-putt game, we continued tradition by rubbing the wooden bear in hopes for a wine and a…

Gold Mining in Columbia, California
Planning to travel from San Francisco to Yosemite, I was excited to add Columbia State Historic Park to my itinerary.  Imagining what it would have been like to live during the Gold Rush of the 1800s, I was looking forward to strolling the streets and exploring its  old restored buildings. Located off of Highway 49 near the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Columbia was once a vibrant town that drew a…

Little Fish Brewing Co., Athens, Ohio
While visiting family in Athens, one of my favorite breweries to visit is Little Fish Brewing Co.  Opening the summer of 2015, the owners Jimmy Stockwell and Sean White focused on their mission to create beers from Ohio-grown ingredients.  The following year, their  “Barrel-Aged Woodthrush” won the 2016 World Beer Cup Gold Medal in the Belgian- and French-style Ale category. In addition to their…

The Best Italian Restaurant in Gatlinburg, Tennessee
When you are dining at “The Best Italian Restaurant”, you expect it to be “the best Italian restaurant”, right?  Who doesn’t love all of the  rich pasta dishes and foods with a doughy crust, melted cheese, garlic and rich tomato sauce? While vacationing in Gatlinburg, we visited the Italian restaurant as a recommendation from family friends.   They had just returned from their stay near the…
