To my dear descendant,
If you are reading this, it has been at least 100 years. That means it is now at least the year 1994 (if not later). I hope life has been treating you well. I’m not sure what all I should say in this letter, except for one thing that I can never, ever tell anyone but you. My dear husband would never believe me, and might even have me committed. I’m sure you know how the mental health industry is in the year 1894! I’d be locked in a room and told I was hysterical. Perhaps in a room with yellow wallpaper. Ha ha! That story just came out two years ago. It was amazing to read it when it was still new. The first time I read it was in Mr. Gillman’s AP English class.
I suppose you’re confused upon reading that line, and I understand. I would be too. It still is strange to think about to me sometimes, and I lived it. I am going to tell you something that beggars belief, but I ask you to read this letter to the end. You, yourself, will see the truth of it. After all, you know where this letter came from - it came from a Brindleton Bay time capsule. Whether you still live there or have moved somewhere else, this letter will find its way to you.
Tumblr media
My name is Marley Ness. Or, that was my name Before. You will know me as Mary McQuarrie (nee Ness). Yes, the wife of Thomas McQuarrie, married in 1892 - well, if you know anything about your family history. If not, you will have no idea who I am, and in that case, I will tell you. I am your great, great grandmother. I think. Maybe just great, maybe three greats. It depends on how many generations removed we are. I do know that I will be long gone by the time you read this.
When I was Marley, I was born in the year 1999, which you may have not even seen yet. Goodness! It’s strange to think that if you went to San Sequoia in 1999 you could meet me when I was but a babe in arms. I grew up there, and have many good memories there. If you happen to visit, have a splash in the water park for me, will you? I miss it.
Now, you probably still don’t believe me. But I haven’t finished my story, and I just ask that you keep reading.

Problem with the AOT fandom and a lot of other shonen animes is that it’s full of a lot of well…men. Emotionally unintelligent men. That make zero efforts in trying to understand complex characters. Not all but…too many.
oh. then to answer your last ask? i think? it’s weird over anon lol
isayama has said (and i’ll dig up the interview if someone asks) that if it weren’t for the survey corps after isabel and farlan died, levi would be “a very irresponsible person” lol.
i imagine with no goal or desire to do anything besides survive, without knowing what freedom there is outside the walls, he would coast along making enough money (by illegal means) to survive while avoiding getting arrested, and he’d do that until he gets tired of it. you probably know what i mean.
in that same vein, i just can’t imagine a scenario where levi would choose to leave the survey corps; fighting for freedom and humanity becomes the reason he lives and fights.
but if he did leave, the only thing next to do is leave the walls and abandon everyone, or decide he’s tired if you know what i mean.
so u see why it takes a special sort of brain dead-ness to say levi doesn’t have feelings, or levi doesn’t care about his friends. it just doesn’t make the most bare minimum sense for his character.
before i get into the men thing, it’s also extremely important to remember that the sheer size of any fandom WILL negatively affect its perception due to the number of fans. there will ALWAYS be a vocal crazy person, and a small subset of non-vocal crazy people, but this is EXTREMELY heightened by the size of the aot fandom in this case. it’s a landmark in animation in general and a cultural phenomenon, that can’t be argued.
but, what exacerbates that inevitable issue is
1 isayama very very rarely tells us the audience that ‘x is this way because of y’. it’s shocking how much of aot in every way is up to interpretation, and what’s more can fit multiple interpretations. it’s obvious how this popularizes discourse.
but, because of that, in general, shippers (for example) will take all the crumbs that suggests their ship is canon as they can get, and so they feel validated. they want to shout it from the rooftops. this type of shipper pisses off another shipper, which pisses off another type of shipper, and so it’s a mess constantly.
this mainly happens with the popular ships - so all of the levi ships lol.
2 popularity opens up the doors for children/minors to get involved in the fandom and wreak havoc with what amounts to their immaturity (especially morally), and tendency to feel indignant for no good reason.
this is different from bad takes in general, because you really can’t teach them any better when they don’t have the processing power to understand what you’re saying. (that sounds condescending, but think about yourself at 12 years old compared to now yk?)
so it’s frustrating. and that’s putting aside minors invading adult spaces.
3 the politics that do and don’t apply to aot. that’s a major one. (that’s way too broad to get into in this post.)
4 finally the role (western) (white) men play. i’ve stewed on this before on this blog, but i won’t get into the weeds.
idk about you, but western white men is the image that pops into my mind when i think of emotionally unintelligent men with toxic masculinity making dim-witted opinions of aot.
it’s a culture that goes wayyy beyond anything that you can quite comprehend bc of how ingrained it is in america in particular.
but so then, when the issue is popularity, what attracts these types of men? well… eren’s actions do. there’s really no question about it.
what these men seem to think - generally - is that eren should’ve done and was validated in committing genocide because of the way marley oppressed his friends, family, and paradis.
…not to get psychological but that’s literally how tweens aged 11-16 comprehend morality, the entire story considered… and the probable demographic for these men has to be late teens to young adults. (but again, i’m generalizing based on my experiences.)
it’s immature, short-sighted, sadistic, and frankly moronic. i think the major deal here is 1 the culture issue, 2 immaturity, and 3 eren’s genocide is about a power fantasy for these guys.
(i’m really not prepared to get into the weeds on this, but hopefully you know what i mean.)
this type of man goes on to affect the popular perception of women like mikasa, who’s strong, a woman, very loyal, and morally nuanced.
the popular perception of erwin, who’s extremely complex as a character. imo he’s the hardest to understand next to eren. but he’s reduced to this unfeeling sociopathic tyrant. it’s absurd.
and levi, of course. because levi is the strongest, and a man, as a hero there’s the expectation that he also doesn’t have feelings, that he has to be aggressive or dominant, that he needs a female love interest in the end, and so on.
but of course, those expectations aren’t true.
it’s the media illiteracy, on top of the unwillingness to understand any other perspective, on top of harmful biases they possessed already.
sometimes… it is partly the anime/manga’s fault for perpetuating harmful things, or bad writing. but in the case of aot, isayama plays such a minuscule role - if any - that it shouldn’t account for the controversy at all.

Fen ref 🌿
Additional info and voice claim under the cut!
———————
ADDITIONAL INFO:
• She’s an American college student pursuing her degree in graphic design
• Her preferred name is Fen, which she chose for herself/started as a shortened version of her middle name. She was never a fan of her given name cause she felt like it never really suited her
• Most of her family still calls her Marlowe though, or nicknames based off of that (ie Marmar, Marley, Marmatode)
• As far as first impressions go: most people assume she’s a lot more standoffish than she actually is (because of the style of clothes she likes, the piercings, the tattoos, and her default expression). In actuality she’s a very timid but very kind individual
• She’s more of a listener than a talker, and is usually the “quiet”/“shy” one in a group. But once she warms up to people or starts talking about something she’s passionate about she can and will talk for hours on end. Although she’s also a nervous talker, and has a tendency to ramble or over share at times
•Often times gets described as “too kind for her own good” and can be a little naive and overly trusting. She tries to see the best in everyone, and is a very patient and forgiving person, but has trouble standing up for herself and setting boundaries.
•ADDITIONAL PERSONALITY DESCRIPTORS: timid, reticent, non-confrontational, compassionate, sentimental, inquisitive, empathetic
•INSECURITIES: She’s not an overly confident person but she’s learning to accept herself bit by bit.
She’s mostly embraced her appearance at this point in her life, and has started wearing and changing things in the way she wants rather than to appease other people, but she’s still a little insecure about her tooth gap. She’s embraced her hair’s natural curly-ness at this point though! (She used to straighten it every day when she was younger)
Her other big insecurity is being seen as overly emotional, and she’s definitely the type to bury her emotions deep down whenever she’s upset. And that is something she still struggles with
•As noted in the third photo, she has a tendency to scratch at her hands when she’s anxious (a bad habit she randomly picked up when she was younger and still hasn’t totally squashed). She has some faint scars on the backs and palms of her hands from this and wears fingerless gloves a lot to stop herself from scratching herself up subconsciously (she also wears them to hide the old scars, and also just cause her hands get cold very easily)
•FAMILY MEMBERS: Gerald (dad), Tilda (mom), Carmen (eldest sister), Syerra (older sister), and Rian (Syerra’s twin)
She’s not very close to her family (figuratively but also literally as they all still live in Wisconsin and she goes to Uni on the west coast) due to some interpersonal problems (read: mindset differences, not the best childhood experience, etc) but she still loves and cares about them deeply and keeps in touch
• She grew up in a Presbyterian household but she’s agnostic
• She’s Demi/Ace (as in Demiromantic Asexual)
• She wasn’t allowed to have pets of her own when she was younger (although that didn’t stop her from befriending all the neighbors’ pets or the stray cats that would take shelter in the garden shed) but plans to get a cat and Newfoundland dog eventually
•One of her favorite activities is ice skating! She used to take figure skating lessons when she was younger, but now she just does it for fun
•she’s somewhat touch averse. She likes having her own space and doesn’t go out of her way to seek out physical contact with people. She’s not a fan of hugs (she’ll tolerate them but doesn’t really enjoy them). and if she’s in a bad mental state being touched will sometimes cause her to have a panic attack. However, with people she’s comfortable around she does on occasion seek out physical affection/doesn’t mind it as much. She’s still not really a hugger or cuddler, but she will sit close or casually lean against them (coexisting in the same space as a sign of love 🤝)

New Pinned Post... Whatever
Wassup. My name's Marley. I'm 26, and I use he/him pronouns.
Some bullshit before I go in-depth:
Art blog: @ancalimearts | Space Blog: @spacesuits | AO3: Ancalime1
Ko-fi
IMPORTANT: No shipping discourse, please. I don't have the brain-space for that because I have like actual problems and a job and stuff. Also, do not follow me if you are under the age of 18. This blog isn't explicitly nsfw but I have been known to indulge in a little horny on occasion. You have been warned.
More about me if you're curious:
I'm a psychology grad (ew) who is going back to school 2: electric boogaloo. After a great deal of waffling, I’ve decided to brush up on some med school prerequisites before trying my hand at the real deal. So… yeah. We’ll see how far that takes me. Update: This is now on hold. I'm looking to start some time in the Fall, hopefully... maybe... sighs.
I like space. A lot. Do I know anything about it? Absolutely not. I'd say "call me an armchair astronaut," but I don't actually have an armchair. That part is a bit of a work in progress - I'll own real furniture some day. Update: I moved in with my friend and we now have armchairs! Hooray!
I also like other shit. BG3 is my main interest right now, as is DND. My brain is also like the world's most dysfunctional Tolkien database (try Tolkien Gateway instead if you want real lore). Sometimes, when I'm feeling bold, I'll read a book. As you might have guessed from my chronic online-ness, this does not happen often. Currently working through "Being Mortal" and one of my all-time faves, "Jane Eyre."
I also have a bunch of ocs that I never do anything with. Maybe one day I'll write a book about them. I should probably start by reading one first, though. For now, I'll settle for fantasizing about what I COULD be doing with them and going on my poorly knitted-together meta rants. Surely that will prepare me for the hefty task that is establishing a manuscript.
Lastly: I'm fucking mentally ill, and pretty badly so. Won't specify as to what (but you can probably guess). Maybe I should write a book about that as well, lol. Yeah. If I outlive the Brontë sisters, it is so fucking on.
Anything else, just ask.

One of my pet peeves in film is when a movie is good but it could’ve been great.
Spirited (2022) was an honesty brilliant concept and almost flawless execution, with some missed opportunities and one glaring fault. I wanna go over what I loved about it and what I would’ve changed.
This will contain spoilers.
First of all, I love that it’s a musical, and furthermore how much it embraces the fact that it’s a musical. I mean the choreography is incredible, and the music is catchy and doesn’t shy away from its musical theatre-ness at all. In fact, I could see this translating into a stage adaption really easily.
Secondly, I love the concept. Seeing the inner workings of the afterlife in this universe is fun, and adding the layer that the Ghosts of Christmas were once alive adds intrigue, and on top of that adding the element that the Ghost of Christmas Present is Ebeneezer Scrooge himself is brilliant. It gives new meaning to Jacob Marley running the operation, and seeing them working side-by-side adds some complexity to the relationship.
Speaking of I ADORE Patrick Page as Jacob Marley. He is the perfect fit for the role, both in his haunting form and out of it. I wish he had gotten more screen time in his chains and they hadn’t kept interrupting his song because you know he was cast for that deep, haunting voice of his and I wish we’d heard it more.
I think the secondary cast was very good. Past and Yet-To-Come were funny and Octavia Spencer was charming and lovely as Kimberly, it’s wonderful to see her in the role of the love interest. Clint’s family tugged at the heartstrings perfectly, and Ryan Reynolds played a very entertaining douchebag but secretly lovable softie.
I think the themes of this movie were a natural continuation of the themes from the original book and, while not always consistent with the canon of the original book, felt faithful in its message.
Here’s my main contrivance though. The one main thing I’d change if I were able to.
Will Ferrell was wrong for his role. For one thing, I personally don’t think Will Ferrell is very funny. On top of that he’s just not a good singer. Like, at all. I mean everyone in this movie was at least a little auto tune, even the professional singers, but even all the auto tune in the world can’t stop Will Ferrell from sounding mediocre at best. Fine for musical cameo, but not for a leading role. Additionally, he’s not a very good Christmas Present, or Scrooge.
I mean, it makes sense for Ebeneezer Scrooge as we see him at the end of the book to become the Ghost of Christmas Present. He’s awfully jolly after waking up. But at no point in this film is Will Ferrell playing “jolly.” Present should be big and boisterous and loud and the kind of person where you can’t help but smile when you see them.
Someone like Patrick Page.
That may sound out of left field but hear me out.
I know I already said he was perfect for Marley, and he is, but I think he would’ve suited the role of Present/Scrooge so much better than Will Ferrell does. Patrick Page has played Scrooge many times before so he has good experience with the character. While Page is known more for his cold, cruel characters he, plays warm, soft, and joyful well too. And this very movie is proof of that fact. I mean…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at that smile.
And perhaps most importantly, Patrick Page is fully capable of carrying a musical as its leading man. You know why? Cause he can fucking sing! Boy can he sing. And while the deep, gravely tone he’s known for may not be your first thought when you think Ghost of Christmas Present, it would work well for Ebenezer Scrooge, that’s for sure.
I know this movie is a comedy and Will Ferrell is a comedic actor, but honestly, I think this movie would work well if Present played a bit of a straight man to contrast with Clint’s constant jabs, with his joking being a way of him deflecting. That’s not to say Present can’t be funny, but I think Present being depicted as warmer, kinder, less witty and more of a guiding hand to Clint would make him a character you care more about and want to see succeed.

★Alma enamorada!★
Perco noites olhando pro teto hora a hora e nada
Minha alma enamorada comanda meus sentidos
Alma enamorada tão bom viver neste estado
Sentir minhas versões unificadas
Nesse amor por desejos dominado
Sei que venho de vidas passadas
Para deixar-me totalmente enamorada…

Outra noite que se vai
E você se faz presente em mim. Estou observando a lua cheia, o meu astro favorito. Me emociono.
Me diz alguma coisa? Sei lá, me dá um beijo na boca e depois me leva pra tua casa...
Quanta coisa a gente faz pra depois querer voltar atrás? Saudades do tempo, daquele nosso tempo.

It’s time to go to the SID library! What books will we check out today?
(A funny side note: I’m used to how, when American productions need to stuff a bookshelf with nonsense, they use law books - which is why all the spines on all your favorite fictional bookshelves look eerily uniform. I’m not surprised to see China with its own favorite go-to filler options, many of which appear to be bound periodicals.)
Visible titles include:
IMPERIAL CROWN
Bloody Harvest: The Killing of Falun Gong for their organs
Unicist Organizational Cybernetics
The American Journal of Medicine, Vol. 93 No. 44
Cancer, Vol. 47
Arletta
CLASSICAL NOVEL
THE PEOPLE'S LAWYER
The Statue of Liberty
Justice of the Peace
BloodRite, by Dominique
OUYE Sofa Furniture
The 10Ks of Personal Branding
GLOWIENKA, by Bogusław Guzik
THE HOTEL BOOK
A Treasury of World's Classics | Marla Stuart Stafan Zweig: CHARLES DARWIN'S THE DESCENT OF MAN
HOLLYWOOD DECORATED
CENTURY
ROCKY
The Knife of Never Letting Go, by Patrick Ness
TIME
MONET
KELLY HOPPEN HOME
SPACE
CINDERELLA
Wandian Book
Van Gogh
Black Dagger, by J. R. Ward
500 Ceramic Sculptures
Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel
LET IT BE
EUROPEAN [...]
THE DEVIL [...]
HOME
Read in [...]
BOB MARLEY
LUXURY HOTELS
I don’t read nearly enough Chinese to draw any conclusions about those titles, but I find it charming that the English-language books on the show tend to be one of three types:
Obviouly fake books, like Wandian Book and that “Treasury of World’s Classics” Descent of Man. If you go searching online for fake books to buy, both of those will come up.
Bulk books, like THE HOTEL BOOK and KELLY HOPPEN HOME, which are non-fake books with pages of content, but which no one outside of an Ikea has ever bothered to open.
Single copies of actual books people might actually want to read, like Wolf Hall and The Knife of Never Letting Go, or the Tom Clancy novel in Dr. Miracle’s office - except they aren’t particularly notable books, which leads me to believe they started life as airport reads that someone didn’t deem worthy of hauling all the way back home.
I don’t know if it’s more interesting to believe that Falun Gong book was a deliberate plant or a complete accident.

There was an entire world hidden within the arch at the waterfall. A mysterious, mystical world that still boggles my mind the more I think of it. I am not telling you this for you to seek it out - I am not even sure it works all the time. I just know that at the time, it took us to a place where the air crackled with magic.
Tumblr media
A large building had loomed in front of us, and once more we decided to venture into somewhere we probably should never have gone. As we walked, we saw people eyeing us as though we were the strange ones, instead of the people literally walking around a magical portal world. Eventually, a woman approached us, and asked us what we were doing there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We should have apologized, allowed her to escort us out and wipe our memory, but we weren’t aware of what she could do. My friend explained to her what we were doing there, and she gushed about how cool the place was, telling the strange woman about how she never knew that there was a place like this in the world. I’m not sure exactly how it happened, but the situation got out of control. My friend reeled back, and the woman whipped out a wand of some sort. It was gnarled and wicked looking, and I felt a rush of fear go through me and the next thing I knew I was trying to grab the wand away from the woman.

Here’s a long ask you might have to think about but I’m bored and interested in your answers too so what the heck! 😂
What are your top 5 countries you’d love to visit and top 5 cities in those countries ?
Top 5 songs that you listen to when you’re sad?
Top 5 movies?
Do you have a top 5 actors or actresses who you love and same goes for bands/ artists? :)
ANON, MY GOODNESS —
first off, I only think I can give 1-3 max cities for each country so I hope that's okay with you!!!
Top 5 countries I'd love to visit and will visit at least two or three in my lifetime:
1. Germany!!
Cities:
Möttingen, Germany - why? Because of 'The Romantic Road'!! Obviously driving can be a nuisance and take a toll on you BUT it seems like a nice 3 - 4 day vacation? here's a link that I read and saved a while back. It's not a must for me but something to think about.
Erfurt, Germany — why? Unlike the rest of the countries and cities, it will be because one of my friends live there and it's better or at least it seems wiser to visit my friend and spend time with them as they show me around and I experience their culture, the location, etc!!
2. Scotland!!
1. Edinburgh, Scotland - it's obvious because it's a popular or seems like a popular tourist attraction and I really want to walk those stairs I keep seeing in Instagram reels!! Aghh
Another reason would be because my mom is a HUGE Outlander fan and she stated that she would love to visit that place sometime so I'm like !!!!!! YES. I want her walking around Loch Ness, Old Course, and anywhere near the vicinity of Edinburgh. Have her enjoy a different scenery for once.
3. France!!
I actually tried learning French 5 years ago and that's pretty much why haha. I know that France, well I don't know, but I have been paying a little attention that there seems to be a revolution or disagreement with their laws or government and I don't know where it would be a good place to visit just to experience a life in France (I don't want the fake experience) but if someone can help me with that and just help me find a place where I can walk around, shop groceries, park walks, thrift shopping, and etc then I'd greatly appreciate it!!
4. Canada
British Columbia is just above Washington State and I've been looking around there and it's not necessarily that I would like to travel there for a week or so but more so give it a day or two of walking around there and then heading back to Washington. I guess it's more for me to say that I've "been" to Canada 😆
5. Japan/South Korea
I have no particular reason as to why, HOWEVER, if I can visit any of these two places then I will — I'd like to learn about their culture, the things they teach in terms of manners or beliefs, way of living, etc.
Top 5 songs I listen to when I'm sad:

* by the way, it's not me intentionally listening to sad music but moreso the music I like to help me feel better ARE sad music. I'll honestly listen to anything really when I'm sad. The point or more important question is AM I WALKING, PLAYING BASKETBALL, OR JOGGING while listening to music?!
