Shuichiro Yoshino vs Masayoshi Nakatani
Shuichiro Yoshino (16-0, 12 KOs) is probably not a familiar name to most American boxing fans, but Masayoshi Nakatani should be. Nakatani most recently appeared on US television as a rebound KO victory for Vasyl Lomachenko, but prior to that was best known for giving Teofimo Lopez the hardest rounds of his career and KOing piece of literal human trash Felix Verdejo. Well, Shuichiro Yoshino starched Nakatani in late 2022 to announce himself as an international talent.
As such, Top Rank is continuing the tradition of bringing in Japanese talent for their stars. Yoshino will fight in the U.S. for the first time ever as he will welcome former super featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson (16-0) up to lightweight. Yoshino and Stevenson will meet this Saturday (April 8) on ESPN.

Haney-Lomachenko & PPV undercard fights will be broadcast live starting at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT   Tickets go on sale Friday, March 31 and will be available to purchase at axs.com
LAS VEGAS (March 28, 2023) — Two of boxing’s pound-for-pound best will battle for lightweight supremacy as Devin “The Dream” Haney defends his undisputed crown against Ukraine’s three-division world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko on Saturday, May 20, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.   Haney vs. Lomachenko will stream live on Top Rank on ESPN+ PPV, the exclusive digital distributor for the event in the United States, beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. The PPV will be priced at $59.99 and additionally be available via cable and satellite pay-per-view providers.   Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Devin Haney Promotions and DiBella Entertainment, tickets starting at $104, plus applicable service charges, go on sale Friday, March 31 at 10 a.m. PT and will be available to purchase at axs.com. “Devin Haney is the sport’s brightest young superstar, and he’s taking on a tremendous challenge against one of this generation’s best pound-for-pound fighters in Vasiliy Lomachenko. This is what boxing is all about,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Devin and Loma are sensational boxers, and I’m sure it will be a memorable fight."   Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) will fight in the U.S. for the first time since defeating George Kambosos Jr. in Australia twice last year to capture and retain the undisputed championship. The 24-year-old has been on a unique path since turning pro in Mexico in 2015 when he was 17. He made his stateside debut on the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley III undercard at MGM Grand Garden Arena in 2016. Following a fourth-round stoppage over then-undefeated Zaur Abdullaev, Haney was awarded the WBC lightweight world championship. He defended that strap against unbeaten contender Alfredo Santiago and former world champions Yuriorkis Gamboa, Jorge Linares and Joseph Diaz Jr. He became the undisputed king last June with a 12-round tour de force in Melbourne in front of more than 40,000 Kambosos supporters.    “Lomachenko is a good fighter and future Hall of Fame candidate,” Haney said. “I take nothing away from him or what he has done in the sport of boxing. Although he didn’t give me a shot when I challenged him in 2019, I won’t be petty. This is the fight the fans really want, and I made it happen. I’ve gotten two times better since the Kambosos rematch, and believe it or not, the better my opponent is, the better I perform. I can’t wait for this fight. I know Lomachenko has an extremely high boxing IQ, and I will show the world on May 20 that I’m the best fighter on the planet. I’m ready to defend my undisputed title in devastating fashion.”   Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs) is a two-time Olympic gold medalist who compiled a staggering 396-1 record as an amateur before winning world titles at featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight. As a lightweight, he knocked out Jorge Linares to capture the WBA and Ring Magazine titles, won the WBO strap against Jose Pedraza, and added the vacant WBC title to his collection with a 12-round decision over Luke Campbell in London. The 35-year-old lost his belts in a close fight against Teofimo Lopez in October 2020 but regained his form with one-sided drubbings over Masayoshi Nakatani and Richard Commey the following year. After a nearly 11-month layoff spent serving with a territorial defense battalion in his native Ukraine, Lomachenko held off unbeaten contender Jamaine Ortiz last October. Lomachenko said, “My goal is to become the undisputed lightweight champion, and Devin Haney is the man with the belts. I respect his boxing IQ and am excited for this challenge.”

Editor's note: This story contains graphic descriptions of physical violence.
A former Olympic boxer was arrested in Puerto Rico on Sunday in the kidnapping and murder of a woman who was pregnant with his child, amid a troubling and persistent rise in violence against women on the island that has triggered a state of emergency.
Puerto Rican boxer Félix Verdejo Sánchez, also known as "El Diamante" or "The Diamond," appeared in court Monday morning, where he was ordered by the judge to be held without bail. He had turned himself in on Sunday after officials announced they had identified the body of the woman believed to be his girlfriend.
Officials say they discovered the missing body of Keishla Marlen Rodriguez on Saturday and made a positive identification using dental records, according to aforensic report released on Sunday.
Sanchez, who competed in the 2012 London Olympics, is charged with kidnapping resulting in death, carjacking resulting in death, and intentionally killing an unborn child. Each charge carries a lifetime sentence or the death penalty. The FBI criminal complaint states that a witness whose name has not been released has "firsthand" knowledge of Rodriguez's disappearance and is cooperating with the agency.
FBI Special Agent Lorenzo Vilanova Perez chronicled the gory details of the alleged kidnapping and killing in an affidavit filed in court on Monday. According to the agent's testimony, Verdejo contacted the unnamed witness on April 27 to ask for help in terminating Rodriguez's pregnancy, which she had confirmed after taking a pregnancy test. Two days later, Verdejo made plans to meet Rodriguez near her home. "Verdejo and the witness drove to the meeting in the black Dodge Durango SUV." The federal document adds that Rodriguez drove herself to meet Verdejo in a gray Kia Forte, then got into his vehicle.
After a conversation between the two, Verdejo allegedly punched the pregnant woman in the face and injected her "with a syringe filled with substances purchased" in San Juan. With the help of the witness, Verdejo reportedlyrestrained the woman's arms and feet with wire and tied a block to her body. According to the affidavit, Verdejo and the witness then drove the two cars to the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge in Puerto Rico's capital of San Juan, where they tossed Rodriguez into the water. "Verdejo shot at the Victim with a pistol from the bridge," the affidavit states.
Puerto Rican police officers discovered Rodriguez's abandoned Kia on April 30, using cellphone records and surveillance footage from the bridge. Police also found at least one shell casing on the bridge. It was a day after her family had reported her missing.
The 27-year-old boxer has been married for about eight years to a woman named Eliz Marie Santiago Sierra, and the two have a child named Miranda, according to postings on Verdejo's Instagram account. He was hoping to stage a career comeback but lost his most recent fight with Masayoshi Nakatani in Las Vegas in December.
El Nuevo Dia reported: "His wife, Eliz Santiago Sierra, was also interviewed and confirmed to authorities that she was aware that Verdejo and Rodríguez Ortiz knew each other and had a relationship."
Keila Ortiz, the victim's mother, who was aware of Rodriguez's pregnancy, immediately suspected Verdejo and urged authorities to investigate his whereabouts after the 27-year-old woman disappeared on April 29.
Tumblr media
She called him a murderer and told reporters, "He is not the diamond. The diamond was my daughter!"
Ortiz urged officials to find justice for Rodriguez and her unborn grandson, as well as all of the other women across Puerto Rico who are brutalized by men.
In one of his first orders of business in January, Puerto Rico's new governor, Pedro Pierluisi, declared a state of emergency over an intensifying tide of violence against women. The executive order was hailed by advocates who have spent years calling for wide-ranging policies to combat gender abuse and femicides. The order gives Pierluisi broad authority to implement policies across government agencies aimed at preventing and responding to violence against women.
The emergency declaration was prompted by another murder: the killing of Angie Noemi González Santos, a nurse from the mountain town of Barranquitas. The mother of three was found dead in a ravine and her partner of 16 years later confessed to the crime. González's death outraged communities across the island and reignited calls for changes in the criminal justice system to bring perpetrators to justice.
I’m usually anti death penalty but in this case I hope he fries.

Vasyl Lomachenko vs Jamaine Ortiz Fight Preview

Published: October 28, 2022
On Saturday, October 29 at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater, Vasyl Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KO’s) will look to secure an undisputed lightweight showdown against Devin Haney by overcoming unbeaten American Jamaine Ortiz (16-0-1, 8 KO’s).
Lomachenko lost his lightweight titles in an upset defeat to Teofimo Lopez in October 2020, but has since mounted his comeback with dominant victories against Masayoshi Nakatani and Richard Commey, showing he is still an elite fighter.
“The Matrix” was one of the absolute pound-for-pound elite before the Lopez loss, arguably Number 1 in the world, and a three-weight division champion.
On his day, Lomachenko is still arguably the best fighter in the world at 135 lbs and below. Exquisite footwork, balance, hand speed, angles, head movement, constant perpetual motion, the ability to make you miss and make you pay in an instant, ring IQ, and accuracy which gives the Ukrainian underrated power. Lomachenko is a complete fighter.
Lomachenko had agreed to a deal to fight then-unified champion George Kambosos Jr on June 5 in Melbourne, Australia, before Russia invaded Ukraine and Lomachenko decided to remain in Ukraine with his family and fight for his country.
“I just wanted to bring a little bit of sports attention to our country and Saturday, in Ukraine it will be Sunday morning, Ukrainian people, it will change a little bit their mind on good emotions,” Lomachenko said at the final press conference.
Lomachenko is looking for another world title shot as soon as possible, but Ortiz must be taken care of beforehand.
Ortiz is no slouch. The American is unbeaten and his last fight was a career-best win, a unanimous decision victory against Jamel Herring in May 2022. Although Herring was on the decline, the impressive fashion in which Ortiz beat Herring showed that Ortiz can hold his own. It would be a huge upset if Ortiz defeats Lomachenko, but he can certainly be expected to make the Ukrainian work for the win.
Ortiz has had his eyes set on Lomachenko for a long time, and will now have the motivation and determination with his long-time goal finally being delivered.
“This is something I always manifested into my life, eventually fighting Lomachenko,” Ortiz said at the final press conference. “The time has come. Here at the Mecca of boxing, at Madison Square Garden, everything I’ve asked for, and God has delivered it.”
Lomachenko is now 34, has been relatively inactive and has had numerous shoulder surgeries. How much does he have left in the tank? With an undisputed bout against Haney potentially on the horizon, this Ortiz fight will show us a lot.
Ortiz has nearly four inches reach advantage on Lomachenko and is a thudding body puncher. Those aspects of his game will trouble Lomachenko the most. As a lightweight, Loma has a greater size disparity against his opponents as opposed to 126 lbs and 130. His punches affect his opponents less and the Ukrainian is more prone to getting hurt himself.
Regardless, in Lomachenko, we are talking about one of the most skilled fighters of this generation.
If Loma prevails as the victor, as he is expected to, he is in the final chapters of his illustrious career, and huge fights await. Loma has the true heart of a champion, and will seek the most challenging, meaningful fights, which right now, would be Haney for all the marbles at 135 lbs.
Times have now changed. Loma is no longer viewed as the clear favourite against potential opponents in the same way he would have been in 2018. Despite his impressive resume, Loma would no longer be clearly favoured against the likes of Haney and Shakur Stevenson. Young, hungry champions who will have undoubtedly had their eyes on Loma for a while, much like Ortiz, looking to boost their legacies by beating the Ukrainian boxing icon, who is ageing by the day.
If Lomachenko deals with Ortiz conclusively, looking like his former self, then the whole lightweight division… tread with caution.
If Ortiz manages to pull off the upset, then it may be time for Loma to call time on a stellar career.

Minimalism (aside from some sponsors) from Anthony Joshua and Kubret Pulev in London on 12/12/20 for AJ’s knock out win. More intricate looks were on display later in Las Vegas in the match between Felix Verdejo and Masayoshi Nakatani. Nakatani’s come-from-behind win is almost certainly a fight of the year candidate.

#whatshot #djblaze #onthewatch It's All About @lomachenkovasiliy vs @masayosinakatani #fightnight #lomachenkonakatani #boxing 🔥☝🏿🥊 Blaze-Loma” came into this bout with a chip on his shoulders and showed us what a fully healed driven fighter can accomplish when no existing lingering injuries are present. No disrespect to Nakatani, but last night Masayoshi was merely a prop for Loma’s 2.0. version of the “Matrix” inside that squared circle. Loma broke down the bigger, rangier and taller combatant piece by piece at will from head to body round by round. There was absolutely nothing Nakatani could do to stop the smaller “Loma” from having his way with him inside that squared circle. Punches were coming from all corners with speed and precision. “Loma” looked surprisingly sharp for someone who just came back from shoulder surgery.Nakatani looked lost and puzzled with no real “game plan” to stop the offensive onslaught coming his way. By the 9th round Nakatani was pretty much out on his feet from the barrage he was absorbing and eventually dropped to the canvas which then prompted the referee to stop the bout. This was a masterful performance by “Loma” hands down against a worthy opponent. With this convincing win “Loma” has rightfully reinserted himself back into title contention once again.
