Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot is desperate to get his hands on the Europa League trophy this season.

The Red Devils start their campaign at Old Trafford against Astana on Thursday – and Dalot wants a winning start.

“It’s a big competition, but not as big for this club,” Dalot told the United App. “This club needs to be in the Champions League every day, every year, winning the Champions League and in Portugal it’s a little but different.

“Of course it’s a big competition that if any team wins it’ll be a great achievement, but for this club when we are in it we just need to win it.”

Maddison meltdown

Manchester United fans are pleading with James Maddison to move to the Red Devils after he posted on Instagram with Old Trafford set as the location.

The 22-year-old’s post had no caption attached to it and the picture showed the midfielder playing at the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday for Leicester.

All pretty harmless but his post has sent United fans wild, with most pleading for the former Norwich man to follow his ex-team-mate Harry Maguire to Manchester.

One said: “Please force the move fella.” Another wrote: “You’re welcome here whenever.” Someone else went with: “You’ll be posting plenty of photos at Old Trafford next season pal.”

DDG savings?!

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract in a deal which may have saved the Red Devils a huge chunk of cash.

The Spaniard will be earning around £375,000-a-week, making him the club’s highest earner following the loan departure of Alexis Sanchez.

The goalkeeper will now stay at Old Trafford until at least June 2023 on his current contract, which will be worth £97.5m if the option of a fifth year is taken up, including add-ons, according to the Mirror.

United boss Solskjaer may have saved the club £100m in securing De Gea’s future, as he’d need to break the bank to sign a replacement.

United have agreed to spend £97.5m on De Gea’s contract, assuming he stays for the four years of his current deal, and the added one-year extension.

He’s a disgrace

Gary Neville has labelled Paul Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola a “disgrace” and believes the Frenchman is still ager to leave Manchester United.

“Pogba wants to leave. He has made it clear,” Neville told Norwegian TV. “His agent is a disgrace and has been a disgrace all over Europe – not just for Manchester United.

“They must stop working with him. He doesn’t have the values you want in your club. My opinion is that Manchester United need not negotiate with him.

“He will try to fix a transfer for his player, and will try to take part of the transfer sum himself. That’s how he operates.”

Neymar wanted Barca

PSG star Neymar has admitted he wanted to join Barcelona during the transfer window for ‘personal reasons’.

“Everyone knows I wanted to leave,” he said. “I made it very clear. I won’t go into details though, because it affects others.

“But I’m still a PSG player and my intention is to be happy on the pitch. My mind is on PSG.

“I always made it clear that I don’t have anything against PSG or the fans. They were personal reasons. I had my reasons and I tried my best to make it happen, but unfortunately they didn’t let me.”

Christian Eriksen snubs Spurs

Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen is prepared to snub any contract offers from the club.

Eriksen, 27, was tipped to leave north London this summer with the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona all linked at some stage.

The Dane admitted he would like a fresh challenge elsewhere – but the deadline came and went with Eriksen failing to secure a transfer.

Now, Spanish newspaper Marca claim he’ll refuse any late approach from Tottenham to enable him to leave for free in the summer of 2020.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic contract

Lazio are set to tie Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to a new contract.

The Serbia international has been on the radar of multiple European heavyweights including Manchester United and Real Madrid.

But it looks like the 24-year-old will be staying in Italy.

Calciomercato claim Milinkovic-Savic will sign a new five-year deal worth £51k per week.

Wanted: Logan Pye

Arsenal look set to beat Manchester United to the signing of Sunderland teenager Logan Pye.

That’s according to The Sun, who claim Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had been tracking the 15-year-old for some time.

It’s said the Gunners will ‘pounce’ during the next transfer window when Pye turns 16 and is eligible to sign a professional contract.

Pye, who can play centre-half or full-back, has mad five appearances for Sunderland’s Under-18 squad – netting once.

Matic to Juve?

Juventus are keen on bringing Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic to Serie A.

Matic failed to make an appearance under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season until Saturday’s win over Leicester.

But with Paul Pogba to return from injury, the Serbian will likely see his services reduced to bench duty once again.

And according to The Sun, Matic may not have to try his hand at cracking the first XI, as Juventus are in for his signature.

The report states that Matic’s lack of playing time for United has put Juve, who wanted to bring Pogba back to Turn, on alert for the Serb.

James Maddison & Jadon Sancho

James Maddison and Jadon Sancho are top of Manchester United’s wishlist.

That’s according to ESPN FC, who claim Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to bring the pair to Old Trafford next summer.

Maddison, 22, is thought to be valued at £80million by Leicester, while Borussia Dortmund’s Sancho could cost upwards of £100m.

Solskjaer’s side spent £150m on Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James last summer – and the Red Devils want to continue with the same transfer strategy.

David de Gea pens contract

David de Gea has signed a new four-year contract with Manchester United that will keep him at the club until June 2023.

The deal also includes the option to extend the contract for a further season.

De Gea told United’s official website: “It has been a privilege to spend eight years at this great club and the opportunity to continue my career at Manchester United is a genuine honour.

“Since I arrived here, I could never have imagined I would play over 350 games for this club. Now my future is fixed, all I want is to help this team achieve what I believe we can and win trophies again, together.”

Sandro Tonali – the new Pirlo

Manchester United are monitoring Brescia midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Italian publication Calciomercato claim United representatives were in attendance to watch him in action during Brescia’s 4-3 defeat to Bologna on Sunday.

Tonali, who has been compared to Andrea Pirlo by the Italian media, is also being assessed by European heavyweights Ajax and Borussia Dortmund.

“I hope Tonali remains in my hand as long as possible. If he wants to stay in Brescia, I am willing to keep him forever,” said Brescia president Massimo Cellino.

“No one has called me yet for him, but it is logical that everyone likes him”.

Dzeko wants Mkhi

Edin Dzeko wants Roma to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan on a permanent basis.

The Armenia international arrived at Roma from Arsenal on a season-long loan and it didn’t take him long to settle in when scoring 22-minutes into his debut.

“I [expected the good performance] from him. I know him as a great player, and he is a very good addition to our attacking team who wants to play football,” Dzeko told reporters after the game.

“I am one 100% sure he is going to be a big help for us. I was definitely happy to see this transfer happen.”

Timo Werner pursuit

Bayern Munich will try to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner next summer.

That’s the opinion of ex-Germany midfielder Michael Ballack.

Werner, 23, has been linked with Atletico Madrid, Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund.

“He has expressed his gratitude to Leipzig with his contract extension. But I think next year a switch to Bayern could be on again,” Ballack told TZ.

On fait le bilan : Serie A 2017/18

  L'équipe : Juventus Turin

Pas besoin d’être impressionnant semaine après semaine pour remporter un titre. À sa façon, sans pratiquer un jeu incroyable mais avec une défense solide et une attaque aux multiples menaces, la Juve a continué sa série, décrochant un septième championnat de rang. L’un des plus disputés, même si la profondeur d’effectif et la capacité à ne pas perdre de points inutiles en route ont fini par faire la différence. D’abord lancée par son armada offensive, avec un Paulo Dybala exceptionnel, l’équipe de Massimiliano Allegri a ensuite serré les rangs, ne concédant qu’un but entre le 19 novembre et le 31 mars, grâce notamment à sa recrue Medhi Benatia en défense centrale. Si Dybala sort du lot, ce sont surtout les inspirations des jokers Douglas Costa (quatre buts et douze passes décisives) ou Federico Bernardeschi (quatre et six) sur les côtés, et la capacité des milieux à se projeter (neuf buts pour Sami Khedira!), qui ont fait basculer les matches serrés.

      La star : Mauro Icardi

Co-meilleur buteur du championnat avec vingt-neuf réalisations, l’Argentin ne sera pourtant pas au Mondial. Outre son efficacité dans la surface, en augmentation constante, l’enfant de Rosario a surtout progressé dans sa compréhension du jeu, montrant une belle entente avec l’ailier Ivan Perisic – joueur autrement plus intelligent dans le jeu qu’Antonio Candreva, son pendant côté droit. Entouré de partenaires au niveau inégal, avec deux des meilleures individualités qui jouent derrière (le défenseur central Milan Skriniar et le gardien Samir Handanovic), Mauro Icardi a souvent dû faire la différence seul. Jorge Sampaoli voulant des attaquants capables de combiner avec Lionel Messi, son absence de la liste, qu’un caractère affirmé a dû faciliter, n’est pas scandaleuse vu la profondeur du réservoir. Mais rares sont les joueurs qui finissent autant de demi-occasions et sentent tous les coups.

    Le coach : Maurizio Sarri

Son aventure à la tête du Napoli s’est terminée par une deuxième place, forcément décevante tant ce titre de champion était désiré, au point de mettre de côté une Ligue Europa qui aurait fait figure de jolie consolation. Du passage de l’ancien banquier, il restera donc les souvenirs d’un jeu léché, où la recherche permanente de construction au sol se marie avec la verticalité, offrant notamment deux spectaculaires duels contre Manchester City en Ligue des champions. Sous ses ordres, tous les joueurs ont progressé, au sein d’un système en 4-3-3 au cadre rigide mais qui responsabilise ses rouages. Et cette trouvaille, forcée par la blessure d’Arkadiusz Milik: le repositionnement de Dries Mertens en pointe. Parfois stériles, pas aidés par la blessure de Faouzi Ghoulam, leur seul latéral gauche de très bon niveau, les hommes de Maurizio Sarri ont parfois tourné en rond. Et, malgré des progrès et l’excellent total de 91 points, n’ont pas suffisamment su gagner quand ils étaient dans un jour sans.

        La révélation : Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Le terme révélation est peut-être exagéré pour le Serbe, vingt-trois ans, qui était déjà un joueur important de la Lazio la saison dernière. Mais le milieu de terrain box-to-box, auteur de douze buts dont cinq hors de la surface, a changé de catégorie, prouvant semaine après semaine qu’il est déjà parmi les meilleurs à son poste. Hormis Paul Pogba, personne ne combine un tel potentiel physique (neuvième au duels aériens gagnés, plus de tacles et récupérations que Radja Nainggolan ou Sami Khedira) et technique dans l’entrejeu. Si son équipe a raté la qualification pour la Ligue des champions lors du dernier match – où il envoya un coup franc sur le poteau –, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic est, avec Ciro Immobile, la principale raison pour laquelle elle est restée dans la course jusqu’au bout. Et sa valeur pourrait atteindre des chiffres aberrants.

    La déception : AC Milan

Il faut donner du crédit à Gennaro Gattuso: jusque-là inquiétante, avec une insistance sur l’état d’esprit qui ne compensait pas des consignes tactiques difficiles à cerner, sa carrière d’entraîneur va dans la bonne direction. À Milan, il a pris la suite d’un Vincenzo Montella qui a beaucoup d’idées dans la construction mais dont le jeu peut devenir caricatural, et a remis de l’équilibre dans le onze. Il n’empêche: après un été passé à dépenser, et alors qu’il va falloir rembourser l’argent prêté par le fonds vautour Elliott, terminer sixième est une déception légitime. Plus que l’équilibre collectif, se pose désormais la question des individualités. Leonardo Bonucci s’est remis la tête à l’endroit après un début de saison gaguesque mais que valent réellement André Silva et Nikola Kalinic, huit buts à eux deux, quand le jeune Patrick Cutrone émarge à dix? Rares sont les satisfactions dans une saison où la plus constante menace en attaque fut Suso, ailier espagnol qui joue souvent tout seul et aime beaucoup frapper, mais a le mérite d’apporter le tranchant qui débloque les matches.

        Le Français : Jordan Veretout

Huit fois buteur avec la Fiorentina, l’ancien milieu nantais, spécialiste des coups de pieds arrêtés, a également fortement progressé dans la discipline. Défensive, avec une science du placement qui lui permet de récupérer des ballons (il a fait plus de tacles et d’interceptions par match que Blaise Matuidi), mais aussi offensive, ses choix de relance étant souvent bons et ses projections arrivant dans le bon timing. À vingt-cinq ans, il ne deviendra sans doute jamais un fuoriclasse mais son jeu s’est parfaitement adapté à la Serie A et son profil de milieu axial complet, technique mais agressif, a séduit plusieurs grands clubs. Même si Jordan Veretout ne regrette pas son passage à Aston Villa, on le préfère là.

    La stat : 29 buts pour Sassuolo

Mine de rien, l’ancien club d’Eusebio Di Francesco continue à faire sa route en première division malgré un effectif limité. Cette saison, seuls Swansea, Huddersfield, Caen, Las Palmas et Malaga ont pourtant marqué moins souvent que Sassuolo, onzième de Serie A avec une improbable différence de buts de -30. Un classement très flatteur, majoritairement dû à Matteo Politano. Alors qu’un problème de paperasse au moment de finaliser son transfert à Naples en janvier (pour 28 millions d’euros tout de même) l’a obligé à rester dans son club, l’attaquant a inscrit sept buts entre fin mars et mi-mai, permettant aux siens de battre l’Inter, la Sampdoria et la Fiorentina et de tenir en échec Milan et… Naples. De quoi donner des regrets aux Napolitains et compenser l’inefficacité de Domenico Berardi, auteur de saisons à seize puis quinze buts dès sa majorité, et qui n’a marqué que seize fois en trois ans depuis.

    Le point hipster : Kevin Lasagna

Après trois saisons à Carpi, l’attaquant au nom un peu ridicule a rejoint l’Udinese, terminant dans le top 10 des buteurs avec douze réalisations. Habitué à jouer à gauche, Kevin Lasagna, venu du monde amateur, a été replacé en pointe par Massimo Oddo en cours de saison et y a montré des qualités inattendues. Passeur médiocre mais capable de se mettre facilement en position de marquer, il fait partie, avec les milieux Rodrigo de Paul et Antonin Barak, des rares satisfactions d’un club qui a vécu une saison très compliquée, marquée par une série de onze défaites de suite au printemps. Et dont l’entraîneur, Igor Tudor, est plus jeune que le gardien, Albano Bizzarri.
