Shadowhunters 101
*Ahem!* Alright, so y’all hopefully know that my current fandom gameplay is inspired by a series of novels by cassandraclare, that were adapted first into a movie (The Mortal Instruments) and currently a tv show, Shadowhunters (Season 3 has been pushed up to March now, rather than April -- I’ll take it!).
My faaaavoite character in the books, movie, and on the show is Magnus Bane (I’ve gone off on a whole tangent about my love for him in Part 1 here). He's a “freewheeling bisexual Asian warlock“ who is the High Warlock of Brooklyn -- arguably the most powerful warlock in America if not the world -- I’ll fight you on this.
In the story universe warlocks are part of the Downworld (supernatural realm). The Downworld includes all beings created through demonic influence -- the Faeries/Seelies are half angel half demon, and Vampires and Werewolves are humans who were bitten and infected with demonic viruses that manifested as either vamps or wolves. Like demons and angels, faeries, vampires, and warlocks are all immortal. Werewolves are not immortal, for whatever reason.
Demons are evil monstrous creatures from Hell, that plague the Earth. They are different from Greater Demons, which I’ll get to. They are dangerous to mundanes (hapless humans), Downworlders, and Shadowhunters alike.
Shadowhunters are the Nephilim (mortal, angel-blooded humans) whose job it is to hunt demons, and try to keep the Downworld in line (though they’re really a sad sack of hypocritical bigots who harass and persecute the Downworlders almost as much as they do regular demons, let’s be real). They are covered in holy Rune tattoos imbued with angelic powers that help them fight demons, but they have no magical powers beyond a few supernatural perks they get from their Runes (super speed, senses, etc) and weapons.
The Nephilim/Shadowhunters aren’t Angels, which live in Heaven, but they’re the closest you can get on Earth, basically. They live and work together under the authority of The Clave, in what they call Institutes (abandoned glamoured churches) around the world, where they monitor demonic activity and deal with Shadowhunter-Downworld politics.
Powerful warlocks like Magnus are often hired out at different Institutes to help create magical wards that shield Institutes from demonic attacks, and create portals so Shadowhunters can quickly get to places and do their thing. Vamps and wolves have no magic, and the fae stick to themselves, so warlocks are left as the intermediaries a lot of the time.
Ideally, the Downworlders and Shadowhunters are supposed to work together to fight demons, but again, the Nephilim are bigoted speciesists (some even went so far as creating The Circle, made up of shadowhunters led by effing Valentine Morgenstern that mofo, who actively hunted Downworlders and collected their Marks -- see below -- as trophies). The Downworlders are strong independent peoples don’t need no Clave, and don’t put up with that mess, so they’ve been fighting each other for hundreds of years rather than their common enemy, the Demons/Greater Demons. Just bad feelings all around.
More on Warlocks & Magnus
Warlocks are the children of human women who were raped/deceived/coerced by demons. They are usually born with “Marks” on them that make it obvious that they have demon blood (horns, fangs, claws, wings like Elias, crazy skin colors or scales like Barnabas, etc), as well as a whole host of magical abilities.
For warlocks like Ragnor Fell, or Max Lightwood-Bane and Catarina Loss, who are covered head to toe in green or blue skin (and Max even has horns, like Ragnor & Elias), they have to learn spells to disguise their marks so it’s safe for them to go out in public amongst mundanes. Most are born with their marks (like Max, whose mother abandoned him as a baby), though others develop more as they grow older (Magnus’ eyes, Max’s horns, etc).
Some warlocks’ marks are luckily not as obvious (like Madzie Lightwood-Bane, who has gills on her neck, which she covers with scarves). In the books Magnus has two marks -- he lacks a belly button, and he has glowing yellow-green cat eyes.
On the show they just give him the cat eyes, which he glamours away to blend in. (And laaaaaaawd the view we got of that belly button~! *squees* Harry Shum Jr. is HAWT!)
(And YES, that Oscar worthy scene directly inspired the post I made here:)
But yeah! *clears throat*
Magnus sometimes tends to flash his real eyes when he’s either intimidating stupid Clave/Circle members, powering up his magic, or accidentally looses control during sexy times with his husband, the shadowhunter Alec Alexander Lightwood. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
KILL ME DEAD WHY DON’T YOU!?
On the show Magnus’ habit of concealing his real eyes everyday is a big deal, as it’s all wrapped up in the insecurities and guilt and self-hate he’s carried around for literal centuries, and how his human mother and step-father treated him as a child, and what happened to them (no spoilers; watch the show, it’s awesome).
For Magnus to flash his eyes not as a weapon/scare-tactic but just to be himself is something he was only ever able to do once he started a relationship with Alec -- a Shadowhunter born and raised to hate Magnus and all his kind and even himself for being gay WTF I’m dead this show got me all kinds of weak!
But he still harbors a lot of deep-seated insecurity about his demon blood, which we get to see in full force in the book City of Heavenly Fire -- and hopefully in Season 3 on the show -- when the main characters all get trapped in Edom, a segment of Hell ruled by the Greater Demon Asmodeus, Magnus Bane’s biological father. (Dun dun dunnnnn~!)
Greater Demons are fallen angels that fought with Lucifer and were kicked out of Heaven. They created/rule the realms of Hell with their hellspawn, the lesser demons that are their minions. Asmodeus is one of the 9 topmost Princes of Hell, and has fathered (and killed) hundreds of his warlock children over the millennia, whose powerful immortal souls he uses to further fuel his kingdom.
Magnus summoned his father only once before in his entire life, long before the events in TMI/CoHF, and both times came with grave consequences (no spoilers! I can’t wait to see how the show handles Asmodeus showing up.)
We’ve yet to hear who the show has cast to play Asmodeus, but no matter who they choose my stubborn headcanon says that the perfect guy to play Magnus Bane’s father is none other than Magnus Bane himself. Namely, Godfrey Gao, who played Magnus Bane in the movie version.
Yes. GAWD. <3
In Asmodeus Part 1 I just found a bunch of pictures that helped show how my brain was picturing him -- I’d like it if he kept the horns and the tail and the fangs and the lion references and cat eyes.
In Asmodeus Part 2 I gave sim!Asmodeus a pair of pet hellhounds, in contrast to Magnus, who loves cats.
In Asmodeus Part 3 I was toying with a scenario in which sim!Magnus met with his father, and how the two of them would just end up butting heads when Magnus ultimately would end up refusing to turn to the dark side, just to make his dad happy.
Good times. :P
I. Can’t. Wait. For. Season. 3!!!
So yeah, I hope this helped clarify things for those of you who are still like wtf is Murf even doing???

max gao’s article: a summary from tim and kristen (co-runners of the show)
i highly suggest that you read the article because max is a brilliant writer and he always asks fantastic questions especially in regards to buck and eddies dynamic
if not, heres a summary/some important quotes:
-the members of the 118 are going to be involved in eddie’s journey to healing himself of his trauma
-the co runners agreed that christopher is already aware of the will and they don’t expect to ever discuss the will ever again because it would only be brought up if there were to be a major accident with either buck or eddie
-they don’t intend to string anyone along with buddie but they also think that the perspective of how the fans view buck and eddies dynamic is very different than the ones they intend when writing the scenes
-buddies relationship is akin to kristen’s relationship with her best friends in her life, one of that reflects family
this is the big quote from the article that has me disappointed but not surprised:
“But I think the struggle with the Buck and Eddie relationship is, we write a thing and we have an idea in our head of what the scene means and what those lines mean and an intention behind it, and then it goes out into the world," Reidel added. "People may receive it in a way that we had not expected or that we had not planned on, and I'm not gonna tell people that they're watching the show wrong because people see what they see. But I think that they're very good friends, and in a lot of ways, they are family, and I think that's where they are right now."
little edit: please don’t be a dick and send hate towards max because of an article that he published. be respectful and kind pls.
also, this doesn’t mean that people who want to cant still hope for, and ship buddie. like kristen said in the article, what you believe is what you believe.
