i am such a miles and maya friendship truther. they are best friends. they binge the entire steel samurai series occasionally. they freak out over pink princess news together. they stay up late arguing about steel samurai theories and lore. they team up to tease phoenix. they share stories about franziska. they bond over their shared trauma of losing a parent to dl-6. their friendship is everything to me and is sooooo underutilized in the games

Christmas isn’t as big as a holiday in Japan, but in Turnabout Goodbyes when Maya was all like “I forgot it was Christmas” it’s localized and assumed to be in the USA, and I’m literally like Girl How because if this was REALLY America there would’ve be Carol of the bells playing on max volume in every store since October getting louder as Christmas looms closer

Writing Maya getting angry is just so weird because there is just never any real instances of her being angry in canon. Like, she's gotten annoyed, frustrated, and has definitely gotten snarky on occasion, but never truly angry. Probably doesn't help that the only scenario I can realistically see her going off on someone is one in which said character only lives because of localization errors.
Would she go off on Redd White? Yes, but a haunting is just as likely, not to mention funnier.

(W)Right Answers
Summary: An ex-lawyer listens to his voicemails.
Rating: T
Warnings: Unhealthy coping mechanisms and depression. Also Kristoph, even if he’s not *as* terrible as he could be.
Notes: I had the idea for this and really wanted to go for it. I’m all about the seven year gap and the lead-up to AA4. Nick’s such a meeeeess! <3 It’s p short but it’s not so sweet. </3
***Alternate Ao3 Link*** Commission? Donate?
He’s gotten into the habit of letting a lot of calls go straight to voicemail.
It’s not self-isolation, he tells himself. It’s just plain laziness. If the person calling isn’t Trucy, it can’t possibly be that important. It’s not like he has anything else going on in his life.
But Phoenix Wright still gets voicemails, so no one else has gotten that memo. Or maybe they have, and it’s why he still gets voice messages and calls. It’s hard to parse, so he just doesn’t bother.
He doesn’t have the time or energy to bother with a lot of things.
Except he still finds himself cycling through the voicemail.
“Niiick! You’re not answering your phone again, you loser! You should at least let me know what you think of the Steel Samurai reboot!”
Sometimes, he catches himself feeling nostalgic and he shakes his head. It’s more just that Maya’s voice hasn’t lost that childish inflection even now.
“Nick, dude! I just met the hottest girl ever and we totally hit it off! You gotta call me back so that I can rave about her!”
...Larry hasn’t changed much either.
“N-Nick... Hic, hic... It turns out...she’s married... D-Don’t call me back, actually...”
Larry hadn’t changed at all, unfortunately.
It almost brings a crooked smile to his face, even now. Back then, he would’ve just been exasperated or annoyed, but he was too used to being surrounded by people to know better. Even after Miles, he still had Larry for what that was worth. Even after Dahlia, he still had Mia. Even after Mia, he still had Maya—and Mia never really left.
And Miles—
Edgeworth, rather...
In the next voicemail, he recognizes Edgeworth’s voice in just the little hitch of his breath. What a bizarre way to identify someone, especially when...
“Wright.”
Edgeworth always said his family name like it was necessary to compose himself immediately. Ever since they met again in the courtroom. That hasn’t changed.
“I’m leaving this message because...”
But rather than nostalgic, Phoenix can’t help but feel bitter.
“Skiiiip for now,” he drones and pauses the message to go to the next. It’s from Maggey, checking in on him because something she remembered and cheerfully recounting how well she and Gumshoe are doing. They had looked pretty happy at their wedding, and Trucy enjoys performing acts at the birthdays for the little ones. She gets paid better than Phoenix expected, too, which was a nice bonus.
Nice. Safe.
(He really should hear Edgeworth out. It’s not like the guy has done anything. This time. He’s just not in the mood. It’s not Edgeworth’s fault, it’s—)
Next message is Trucy calling him from her friend’s number. She already gave him an earful for not picking up, albeit she was playful about it. Joking about how it must’ve been Don’t Answer The Phone Day—which is practically every day.
Maya left another message, saying that Phoenix should call her back whenever he can. Something. Something. Steel Samurai.
She actually has changed. She’s much more mature. Her voice isn’t even shaking.
Phoenix throws an arm over his eyes to block out the bright lights of the Wright Talent Agency. Trucy’s out doing a show, and he couldn’t go in tonight. He should just catch in on some much needed shut-eye, but instead he’s flicking through his voice messages mindlessly.
It’s almost like being in a fun house. Hearing such familiar voices in a world that’s gotten so distorted. He thinks that—and the heavens think it hilarious to smite him for his pretentiousness.
“Mr. Wright, this is Attorney Gavin.”
A purring voice. Seemingly warm and affable. Pompous beyond belief, but it wasn’t an ego completely unearned.
“If you were going to miss our arrangement, I would’ve appreciated some prior notice.”
Overly polite. Still too proud to even let in a little bit of pitifulness. Yeah. Gavin was definitely pissed.
“I understand what you’re going through. Still, we are friends, aren’t we?”
He was so beyond pissed.
“I’ll be awaiting your next call. If I don’t hear from you, I may worry enough to visit. I’m quite busy, but I can make time for a friend.”
Click.
Phoenix let out a sigh, and he’s already moving on auto pilot. Thumb going to hover over the callback button. He should hesitate a little.
He doesn’t.
Ring, ring.
Keep your friends close, and hey, if they happen to also be your enemies—
“Yo, Gavin. It’s me. I got your call...”
--
“Wright. I’m leaving this message because... Quite frankly, I don’t know when I’ll hear back from you again. Rather regrettably, it seems we’ve been speaking less and less. I understand the physical distance is a part of it, but I... Ugh.”
--
“Yeah, yeah, I already said I’m sorry. I’d offer to make it up to you later, but I’m lacking funds at the moment. Unless you’d like me to play a tune free of charge? Haha. Thought not.”
--
“This is ridiculous. I don’t even know what I’m doing anymore. Once again, you’re weighing down my heart in a way that I cannot deal with easily. Why are you like this? Are you angry at me? And what exactly is your relationship with Attorney Gavin?”
--
“No, seriously, I’m fine. You don’t have to check up on me, Kris—Gavin. Sorry, I know you’re all about manners. But we are supposed to be friends, right? You can call me Nick, if you want.”
--
“I suppose it’s none of my business. Please. Call me again when you can. It’s not urgent, but... I do think it’d do us both a bit of good to chat as friends are supposed to.”
--
“I’ll talk to you later, Gavin.”
He always waits for Kristoph to hang up first, or else he’ll never hear the end of it the next time they talk. It’s always a tedious tightrope, but Phoenix has been getting at lot better at the balancing act.
Hell, he might even be good enough for the big top one of these days. If they’ll ever take him.
(Probably not. And he really doesn’t want to with how much of a circus that trial had been.)
He’s already got enough on his plate. Trucy, Kristoph, maybe even that kid...
What was his name again? Something weird.
It’s getting late. He should head to bed soon. He’ll apologize to Maya and Larry later.
...and Miles?
Tomorrow’s another day. He’ll burn that bridge when he gets to it.
