Another piece of fanart, featuring toddler Esteban with his father figure, young sailor Mendoza (who’s not captain yet). Because this is one of the biggest plotholes in the original season : technically, Mendoza could not have brought Esteban to Barcelona before having returned from Magellan’s voyage around the world. Therefore, Esteban would have been a toddler, and certainly not a baby anymore. Anyhow, I’m thinking of writing a few oneshots (in French) to explore this particular period of time, and the budding father/son relationship between these two. :-)

Due to coronavirus crisis, area cancels trips abroad
(photo: Antnio Cunha / Esp. CB / D.A Press)
Gol Linhas Areas decided, this Tuesday (3/17), to suspend all international flights, from March 23. The initiative, according to the company, is a security response in relation to the coronavirus, decreased demand and restrictions imposed by foreign authorities.
A leader in the Brazilian domestic market, Gol interrupted flights abroad until June 30, as a way of “guaranteeing the safety of customers and employees and adapting to the new scenario of demands for air transport, given the advent of the coronavirus (Covid -19) globally ”.
In a note, the company said that, in addition, “it is complying with the travel restrictions imposed by the authorities of the countries in which it operates, in South America, Central America and the Caribbean, in addition to recommendations from the authorities of the United States”. “With regard to the domestic scenario, Gol is currently engaged in adapting its offer to the new pace of flight search, and expects to reduce its area network by 50% to 60%. (…) In total, between national and international operations, the company expects to decrease its operations between 60% and 70% by mid-June. ”
The company stressed that it closely monitors the recommendations of the responsible bodies, not only with regard to the health and well-being of those who choose it, but also linked to the flexibility of national and international travel rebooking and cancellation policies, on their own flights or carried out in connection with partner companies.
Yesterday, Latam and Azul, two other large companies operating in the country, had also announced dramatic reductions in international flights. The Brazilian Association of Business Areas (Abear) released a note with measures necessary for the sector to maintain itself. In the opinion of Flavio Serrano, chief economist at Banco Haitong, the government will have to postpone tax collection from airline companies. “The profit margin in this sector is very tight. If there is no demand, it is better to leave the plane stopped. For this reason, they are announcing the cancellations ”, he explained.

Road transport wants help
After the airlines asked for help, yesterday it was the turn of the road transport sector to warn of a possible collapse with falling demand. The National Association of Passenger Road Transport Companies (Anatrip) reported that, without the support of the federal government and state governments, the public road passenger transport service could collapse in up to 90 days. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the reduction in passenger demand is estimated at 60%. The cargo sector, which is fundamental to supply, announced precautionary measures to ensure continuity of service.
For the preservation of companies and guarantee of continuity of services, Anatrip proposes the suspension for six months of the collection of PIS / Cofins and of the Contribution of Intervention in the Economic Domain (Cide), incident on fuels, in the federal scope, and of the Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS), both levied on diesel oil and levied on passengers, at the state level. The entity is also asking for payroll tax relief in order to preserve jobs. Anatrip calculated that, if the companies do not withstand the crisis, 100 thousand direct jobs and 400 thousand indirect jobs will be reached, as the demand for passengers has already fallen by approximately 60%.
NTC & Logstica, an association of cargo carriers, has already taken internal measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Meetings and events are suspended and crowds inside the establishments should be avoided.
