All this talk about Satan got me going. There are two Silly Symphonies that stick out in my mind.

1929 Disney animated an entire short called Hells Bells and another was created during 1934 which was called The Goddess of Spring. It's like a cross between Greek and Judeo Christian beliefs if you take a look at it.

Persephone's husband is basically Old Scratch.

Oh I knew of Hells Bells! Sweet memories :)

Now the Goddess of Spring I vaguely knew of, because I saw the thumbnails here and there (and some pictures were used in Lanal del Rey's fan made video clips). I just decided to watch it due to your ask, and this is fascinating because this actually proves further a point I was making.

Aka how Disney pushed the envelope when it came to confusing Hades with the devil, and have doing that since 1934!

And we went from the myth of Persephone being reinterpreted as the devil stealng away the spirit of spring:

... to the Hercules movie where Hades is a stand-in for Satan. I mean just look at how the concept art originally wanted to depict him!

In fact, this reminds me of something I wanted to talk about before, with Disney's depiction of Hades - and I don't recall if I said it before or not?

You can see how Disney tweaked the role of Hades into becoming "the Ancient Greek Devil" by having being associated with fire. It is MASSIVELY revealing because fire isn't inherently associated with death or the world of the dead in Greek mythology. It is true that there are bits of fire in the Underworld (the Phlegeton, the punishment of Ixion), but this is really rare - because the Greek Underworld was actually perceived as a place of darkness where no light could shine, as a realm populated by shadows and thus without the warm of bodies, as a place of silence where you need to give blood to the dead to allow them to speak again... Fire in Greek mythology was rather tie to life, activity and more positive things - Hestia and the hearth, Hephaistos and the forge...

So Hades becoming a being of fire was again, adding a very clear Christian subtext to the movie. Heck, depicting Hades as "fiery-like" and constantly getting angry was also a strong misinterpretation of the original character - which paved the way for many more incarnations of Hades in meda who is just the devil by another name - because the main thing with Hades was that he had no emotion. He was this harsh, cold god with a heart of steel - who did not know pity, kindness or joy, but the same way he ignored things like rage and anger (which were more Poseidon or Zeus' territory). It took something exceptional to make him feel pity (Orpheus' song), and likewise it took something exceptional to make him feel angry (the removal of Persephone). It all tied to ths characterization of the Underworld as a place of darkness and silence, a sort of still and quiet emptiness devoid of all the feelings and emotions of the world of the living.

for your request, that album is deeply associated with autumn for me (also I know it's your favorite season 🥰) so all the paintings I chose are very autumnal. in general, there's this kind of beautiful sadness on the album that I visualize as wide grey skies and empty landscapes that you watch out the car window as you drive through the mountains when everything is dying. there's beauty but there's also loneliness and sadness, but the kind you almost enjoy - the kind you sit in for a while. idk if that makes any sense at all, but that's the general vibe I tried to go for when I picked out these pieces. also, in my descriptions of each image, I added a little commentary on what song/lyric it reminds me of ☺️

"passed alger brook road / I'm over the bridge / a minute from home / but I feel so far from it"

this piece for me especially captures that kind of loneliness that I tend to feel in late autumn that Stick Season captures so beautifully. I absolutely adore fall, but by late autumn there always comes a time where I feel like I'm floating. the leaves have all fallen but it hasn't yet snowed. the sky is always grey and the air is cold enough to nip, but not yet strong enough to bite. there's this sense of both mourning something lost and anticipating something to come. idk if this makes any sense at all but that's what this piece brings to mind for me. of course, I loved that this figure is crossing a bridge - perfect for the "over the bridge" line - but I feel like this painting also captures the feeling of being a minute from home, but feeling so far away. we can see a house in the background of the piece, but it appears flat and distant, with the vertical lines of the trees seeming to push it back even further from both the figure and the viewer. also the light in this work is such a quintessentially autumn light that I can just feel it. like, I know exactly what it would feel like if I were to step into that scene. again, idk if that makes sense, but those are my unhinged ramblings on this piece lol 😅

"forgive my northern attitude / I was raised out in the cold"

I like this one because it has the same atmosphere of the We'll All Be Here Forever edition cover. there's a dusting of snow and frost, but not enough to make it feel like a "winter wonderland." we still see all the drab, damp browns of the foliage beneath, kind of breaking that stereotypical image of the "ideal" winter scene. I guess I feel like the album kind of does that too - demystifies certain things and experiences. also, this is exactly the kind of image I picture when listening to "Northern Attitude," which I why I chose these lyrics for it. as someone who was raised and has lived in a more northern climate for most of my life, I find this song super relatable, and the scene depicted in this painting is totally something I could see while out taking my dog for a walk in November

Autumn Landscape by Charles Ethan Porter (ca. 1890-1891)

"I saw the end / it looked just like the middle"

this one I picked for the vastness of the spaces. that sweeping light grey sky and the field fading off into the distance are exactly the kinds of scenes that this album brings to mind. this is also a scene that I feel I've seen from a car window about a thousand times. I'm often traveling in late November (going to and from school for the holidays) so this image feels familiar and yet distant in the sense that I've seen it so many times, and yet never truly known it. I've seen it from a car on the highway, but never really stepped out into it. that's also why I picked this lyric for it - there's this sense of sameness and yet change that just resonates so much with both this album and just the general vibes of late autumn

okay I'm so sorry I feel like all of these descriptions are just me weirdly rambling about late autumn 😅. but this one I picked to be a little more on the happier side, even if Stick Season is kind of a soul-destroying (affectionate) album. I do absolutely adore autumn foliage and there is something so calming about this scene for me. additionally, I adore the song "You're Gonna Go Far" and I love the sentiment that's kind of like "I know you left but I'm so happy for you and I'll always be here for you." this is a very placid, still scene that feels like a calming breath. I paired it with these lyrics for that exact reason - they are a reassurance that everything will still be as you left it, that you can come back and sit in this autumnal forest and just rest and breathe.

The Times of Day: The Morning by Caspar David Friedrich (ca. 1821-1822)

"it's just me and the curve of the valley"

I also love "The View Between Villages" - there are so many emotions in that song, but I guess I always ultimately take away a feeling of coming home to yourself. there might be all these complications and messy feelings, but there's also a deep sense of comfort that weaves its way into your bones and pulls you back to wherever it is you need to be. so for another more positive one, I chose this image with mist rising from the water and blanketing the pines as the crest of the mountains rises behind them. it seemed perfect for this lyric, as it sort of literally depicts the curve of a valley, but to me it also feels welcoming. the sun is rising and turning the sky pale pink and yellow as you wind your way through the valley, the mist beginning to lift to show you the way back home.

The Trout Pool by Worthington Whittredge (1870)

"we'll be waiting for you, love / and we'll all be here forever"

this image gives me similar feelings as Autumn in the Catskills, and thus I paired it with lyrics from the same song. this scene just feels so warm and welcoming, with the light dappled on the soft moss and calm water. even more so than Autumn in the Catskills, this to me feels like a place I could walk right into. I can hear the leaf litter crunch beneath my feet, smell the pine on the crisp air, hear the chirping of birds and skittering of squirrels, feel the warmth in the patches of sunlight and a welcome chill in the shadows. it's a moment you want to stay in, linger with. that's why I wanted to close out with this one. this place - whether exists in real life or just in your mind - is there for you, waiting forever. autumn for me is a season that lets me step back into myself, and one of the themes I pulled from Stick Season is a sense of homecoming - whatever that means for you. the seasons will spin on and you may wander far, but this place, these memories and feelings and experiences, are here for you always. the wind picks up, rustling the branches above you. a few leaves break free from their branches, spinning lazily to the ground below. you think you hear something on the breeze - a voice, a whisper, a song: "we ain't angry at you, love / we'll be waiting for you, love / and we'll all be here forever"

I hope that wasn't too ramble-y and/or based too much on my personal experiences/interpretations 😅 I really love this album so this was such a fun request and I had a fantastic time looking for all these fun autumnal paintings!

In a move surprising literally no one, I am once again thinking about Philippa Eilhart. Dress and how Philippa is dressed in the books as a whole are very important to her characterisation but the outfit I think is peak characterisation is her Thanedd Banquet Dress.

We consume this banquet from Geralt's point of view, we see the politics at play, are told the politics at play, but Geralt does not have a wider understanding because he is not a politician. The outfits are meant to describe a lot about the characters, they're easy to pick out at first, Sabrina, Keira with her Ankh juxtaposing her dress so sheer you can see the mole on her left breast, etc. And then Dorregaray of Vole talks with Geralt. Geralt has been pulled every which way told everyone is spying for someone and Dijkstra and Philippa are the most obvious yes? No. Dorregaray points out Philippa's dress is trimmed with an extinct fur, Diamond Ermine. When Philippa comes to steal Geralt away he points it out explicitly, he even adds that the species was officially declared extinct twenty years ago. No, corrects Philippa Eilhart, it was thirty years ago. She even mocks it, saying that she thought about instructing her dressmaker to trim it was raw flax, but then the colours wouldn't have matched.

This says nothing to Geralt, this says EVERYTHING to the reader. The two most notable aspects, the trim of her dress is a fur that is extinct now. The trim of her dress is ermine.

Ermine has historically been defined by heavy sumptuary laws and is a status symbol of royalty. The pointing out of its extinct nature serves to show you the reader she's been at this longer than we suspected.

This dress trim tells us many things about Philippa Eilhart Geralt doesn't know, that he will see through Keira's eyes next chapter more clearly. Philippa Eilhart is not Redania's spy, Dijkstra is. Philippa Eilhart is Redania's Queen Regnant, a puppet master. She has brought Redania's spy, and is there dressed as Redania's Queen in the interest of Redania as well as to have an alibi for the usurping of Vizimir the Second of Redania.

As Tissaia says in the next chapter, Redania hasn't had a King, not for a very long time. This dress shows that.

yes!! i have a handful of ideas about these guys. my thoughts on the anime are a lot more fleshed out than my thoughts on the games, but i'll talk about both of them here

update this got really long so to spare everyone the pain of scrolling past:

so within the universe of the show, galacta knight was released from his crystal by nightmare and hired at NME. this is just capitalizing on the 'greatest warrior in the galaxy' thing; if you've got the most powerful warrior on your side, nothing really stands a chance. nightmare knows astrals are very powerful creatures, and after a while he manages to get ahold of meta knight as an infant. he gives him to gk to raise and later train.

since meta knight is less than useless at this age, gk is stuck with him for a while. he only has him for about a decade (10 years ages an astral the same amount as roughly 1 year for a human) before nightmare decides to take matters into his own hands. young astrals are little rays of sunshine that are meant to spread positivity and someday protect the galaxy, there's no way mk is going to agree to fight for nightmare if another astral is raising him as intended. nightmare separates him from gk for a while (like 25-30 years) to sort of instill his own philosophies in him. mk returns as his stoic, quiet self, supposedly influenced to be part of nightmare's army.

(also unrelated recent hc update of mine is nightmare named him andromeda?? can i say that?? like. you guys see the galaxy connection obviously but also like meda/meta and then galacta knight inspiring meta knight can i make this real???)

the problem then is that meta knight is still very young and can't possibly fight as nightmare wants him to. gk tries to convince nightmare of this while also attempting to train mk, but both to no avail. gk eventually plans to escape with mk, nightmare catches him and puts him back in the crystal. mk is left with NME for about another decade before he runs away and is found by the GSA.

i have some other things that happen between this and nightmare's eventual defeat, but this post is already getting way too long so i'll spare you the details this time.

for the games, my ideas are a lot less clear, which is partially because galacta knight doesn't have much (or any) canon lore, and because my interest has been mostly focused on the show over the past year. i have had a few things come up recently, though:

gk finds mk somewhere on another planet while he's scouting for a mission. he's afraid to bring him back to halcandra because he doesn't want to ancients to raise him to be a weapon like they did with gk. he comes back to the planet pretty often to hang out with the kid and bring him things, generally help him out because he's stuck here alone.

it gets pretty blurry here, something something the ancients know about mk and are also trying to seal gk away, gk gives mk a warp star and sends him away so he'll be safe. i have plenty of thoughts about the warp star that are completely irrelevant to this, and mk wanders the galaxy until just before the events of adventure, where he gets to dreamland and meets the rest of the meta-knights.

i'd like to think he still fought with gk at some point down the line, be it for the actual reason of facing the greatest warrior, or he was trying to find him, whether or not he recognized him, etc. maybe gk gets freed eventually, that'd be cool. but right now my thoughts on the game universe sorta end there.

those are my crazy ramblings about backstory which. i realize probably isn't exactly what you were expecting? but i've wanted to write them down for a while to be honest. i hope we get some more info about galacta knight in the future, canon or not, cause i'd love to expand on or change my game-universe theories. animeverse is pretty solid, though, big fan of that one.

I’ve thought about this for a while but when do you think the danonation fandom had like appeared less on TikTok bc I feel like he gained popularity only during when the Batman came out and there were all the edits I just find it strange like I bet there are a few ppl on there but not many especially when stranger things season 4 dropped and everyone turned their attention over to Eddie but on here it’s the exact opposite! there are so many blogs dedicated to Paul and the character’s he plays lol idk just wanted to hear your take on it bc it seems like it was just another trend on TikTok..

I get what you’re describing!! Personally, I still get a decent amount of Paul content, but maybe that’s just my for you page. But I think the plateau of Paul content on tiktok is less about him and more about the nature of Tiktok’s algorithm. For example, as popular as Joseph Quinn is, I’m now seeing the pendulum swing into the algorithm promoting Pedro Pascal more now that The Last of Us is out. That doesn’t mean that his fandom is dying or anything.

It’s the fact that’s Tiktok’s algorithm is literally designed to keep promoting the next best thing so that people will be more likely to discover new interests so they will then spend more time on the app. Tumblr isn’t like that. Yeah, there are big booms of different fandoms, and that’s natural. But more than anything, tumblr helps fandoms build these massive archives of content that anyone can search for at anytime. That’s beauty of this platform. You can go be and find things from years long past and it can be continually spread for years to come. Tiktok is not like that. Tiktok needs you to keep scrolling and keep consuming what they think you’ll like because that’s what serves their bottom line.

I think Paul’s fandom has almost always been a bit more niche from my observations and that can be attributed mostly to his more lowkey persona. But The Batman was the big thing that shot him up into space, especially on Tiktok. But I think that’s just the nature of the beast. We might not have Joseph Quinn or Pedro Pascal kinds of numbers, but just like any other more niche fandom, this community means something to a lot of people and I like to think that it will always exist in some form or another.
