On G-Witch and the "Giant Space Laser"

Seeing a bunch of new fans who's first experience with Gundam has been Witch from Mercury be either confused or even angry at the big laser:

So I thought I'd take some time to explain the history of Space Lasers and Gundam and how every long time fan has basically had it on our bingo card since the show started. Note: I'm not including Victory's Keilas Guilie or G-Gundam's Statue of Liberty Cannon.

The first one was called the Solar Ray and it appeared in the original Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979, it was a converted colony from Side 3, and used by the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War:

The second one appeared in 1985's Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam as the Colony Laser and it was called Gryps 2, it was created out of the husk of the colony of Side 7 and used by the Titan's during the Gryps War:

The next time we'd see one was in 1996's After War Gundam X, an AU timeline which was almost a "What If?" universe of the original Universal Century timeline that asked the question "What if Char had succeeded during the counter attack?". The colony laser in question was created out of one the abandoned colonies left over during the 7th Space War. It also had one of the coolest destruction scenes in a show IMHO:

2002's Mobile Suit Gundam SEED has not one, not two, but three different stand-in's for the old Colony Laser in the form of the the "Cyclops System", which was a powerful targeted array of microwave satellite weapons that vaporized all water it was pointed at, this included inside of human bodies. The effects in the show were graphic.

The second from SEED was GENEIS or Gamma Emission by Nuclear Explosion Stimulate Inducing System, which was essentially a huge gamma ray cannon that used nuclear explosions as the fuel to generate the gamma ray bullets. Just like before the results of it firing are VERY GRAPHIC.

Moving on to the third from SEED we have Requiem, which was a large cannon installed on the dark side of the Moon and used reflecting relay stations positioned around the Earth to hit targets with pin-point accuracy:

Leaving SEED behind finally we move on to 2007's Gundam 00 and their Memento Mori system, which in a departure from previous superweapons in Gundam was mounted to the Earth's orbital ring and used by the Earth Sphere Federation organization A-Laws to destroy basically the entire Middle East. Silly fact: because it was mounted to a ring the first one had a conical field of fire which gave it a blind spot that they could sneak up on.

Circling back to the Universal Century we have 2010's Gundam Unicorn trotting out Gryps 2 again, and in a scene that Witch From Mercury directly pays tribute to: a character face tanking the blast to save their friends and family:

And now we're at today and Witch From Mercury has used the reference wonderfully.

I hope this explains a little bit of the history of these things and how they fit into the Gundam Franchise and how they don't come as a shock or surprise to the long time fans. Rather if anything it's like seeing an old friend back in the mix.

It’s a tie! 🥳

I stated earlier that this is not every time they were injured and not every time they went to the hospital. Instead, it is every time we saw them while they were admitted to the hospital as a patient.

As with everything, this can be calculated in different ways.

There were instances where we saw them go to the hospital for something temporary (Blood, Gesthemane) and there are episodes where they definitely went to hospital, but we didn’t see them (Zero Sum, Never Again).

This also doesn’t take into account variables like length of hospital stay or injury v. illness. It’s impossible to know the full circumstances in some cases and overall to estimate who spent the most *time* in the hospital.

All to say, this was just for fun and I acknowledge it is not comprehensive based on different criteria (so don’t come for me), but I do believe it is every time we see them on screen admitted in hospital gowns.

txf30 day 4: favorite dynamic (besides the obvious): scully/mulder/skinner

y’all mind if i ramble for a second?? there are so many connections that are so important to this story, but i always come back to these three. i think everything does.

i say that memento mori is the most loving episode of the series, but when i think about that one, it’s not even the kiss in the hallway that stays with me. it’s skinner coming in to work, the first time scully was in the hospital, and finding mulder sitting in his office. and he’s just been sitting there. bypassed the secretary (lol), and just sat and waited. he doesn’t have anywhere else to go.

and the way that skinner tells him, no. don’t do it to yourself under any circumstances. that he is not to risk himself to try to save scully. ultimately, it’s not mulder that made the deal with the devil, it’s skinner who didn’t follow his own advice. (gave up everything he has, to save them both).

and these are just two weirdos who work for him in the basement!! he doesn’t owe them anything. but he’s the one there, at the end, no matter what. he’s the one who comes to get them when they’re hurt, or lost, or need help. they’re his emergency contacts, the people who show up, the people who advocate for him. the people who know him. (the bigfoot division are a.d. skinner’s silly rabbits etc etc etc)

in iwtb, after six years away, it’s skinner who comes to get scully, on the side of the road, next to mulder’s flipped car. tells her that they will find him, that he’s okay, to breathe. it’s skinner that holds mulder on the ground, in the end.

when mulder went back to bellefleur, it's skinner that scully sent with him. that girl has never trusted a single soul to so much as breathe mulder's air, but "i won't let you go alone," is immediately followed by skinner packing the car.

like trish said last night:

i think telling scully he "lost" mulder was the hardest thing he ever did. skinner loves mulder too, but mulder is scully's entire world. and this time around, he won't let scully be alone the way mulder was.

my favorite moment in requiem is the final scene, the two of them crying together. the only two people. the only two people who know.

when she tells him that she's pregnant, he's the first to know. the only person to know, for most of her pregnancy. 18 years later, he's still the first person thinking of their baby, looking out for him.

honestly, it always comes back to sein und zeit for me. when after 7 years, after 27 years, mulder says that it's just too much, and he wants to go home. he wants time away from work. the sequence in the car: mulder in the backseat, skinner behind the wheel, scully on the passenger's side. for so many years, mulder had to be searching, so that he wouldn't be alone. but now he stands in front of two people who love him, and admits to needing a break. to wanting it to stop. he's guided, he's guarded.

skinner is a hardass. it's not easy to manage their madness. it's not easy to write the footnotes, to be the person waiting, in this particular story. but like he tells mulder, 14 years after they last worked together: not a day goes by where he doesn't just wish they were there, trying to make things better.

Analysis #1: Bladee's Requiem

An analysis of Bladee's Requiem: a single comprising two songs, Requiem and Obsessed with Death.

Requiem and Obsessed with Death are the two songs released under Bladee’s recent single, titled “Requiem”. Considering their status as a single, it was expected that they would sound similar to one another or that they would revolve around the same subject matter. And they do both speak to the same subject – though it is not entirely evident at first. Regarding their sound, they are quite different. Requiem has the clear, distinct Bladee style, whereas Obsessed with Death – while still very clearly Bladee – moves in a different direction, and stands out from the rest of Bladee’s discography, where it has clear gothic influences. And yet, the two songs feel like two sides to a coin. The exploration of both sides, the embracing of duality, and the unboundedness of Bladee are some of the highly respected qualities of the artist and make his work an undeniably unique experience.

Again, the two songs are very different – their lyrics, melody, etc., but it’s super cool that their linking tie is death and the idea of death. Obsessed with Death states this clearly in the title, Requiem too. Requiem – meaning a mass for the dead – is a Catholic Christian ceremony performed to grant the dead eternal rest. Obsessed with Death could be seen as the chasing and desire for this eternal calm.

Looking at the lyrics, Requiem takes a much more positive view of death, where the discussion of “memento mori”, “we’re victorious, I am very fortunate” (nice reference to his song Victorious with lean as well lol, where they discuss being fortunate + victorious even though they have faced much turmoil) “very blessed by Elohim” (the name for God in biblical Hebrew), etc. The song takes an almost absurdist outlook with “Trauma ties the bond in an unbreakable knot/The door behind is locked, we forever fall apart”. Bladee’s statements sustain that this route is undeniable, that the past is something you cannot escape nor return to, and that the future is set. And while this may seem very depressive, the context of the song allows these lyrics to become more absurdist rather than nihilistic.

“Love should be like war, and this war must be like art” references the H.L. Mencken quote “Love is like war: easy to begin but very hard to stop”, to say that love should be a powerful force, and not just that, but it “must” – it is a requirement – that it be like art, encapsulating beauty and creativity, otherwise, it is not love.

“Victory is ours, written in the stars”, again, the positive outlook is made clear, victory is his God-given right, it is his fate, and has been his fate since the birth of the stars. This line reiterates the idea that the future is set, as stated previously.

“Life is on the line, purpose beyond time” truly speaks to me on a personal level. “Purpose beyond time” is undeniably beautiful. Too many people arrive on this earth wondering what their purpose is, why they have been sent here – and not just wondering – but looking, searching for their purpose, thinking, believing it is an essential part of who they must be and an integral part of life itself. But it is not. Purpose is irrelevant, and not just that, but it is not limited to this earth. Purpose may find you in another lifetime. If at all. And there is nothing the matter with you. “Life is on the line” could be interpreted as a lifeline. A purpose is sometimes made to be a person’s lifeline. It is often thought that without a purpose, you are unimportant and unneeded. Hence, your life is on the line when you believe that a purpose will be enough to sustain you.

Looking at Obsessed with Death, the song has a much darker outlook. Requiem discussed “very blessed by Elohim”, while obsessed with death discusses evil and sin. Truly two sides of a coin. “The city's evil lights, like evil eyes/Like ice, I'm cold, I'm cold, I'm cold (I'm cold, I froze)”, the personification of the city - which is likely a reference to society in general - brings it to life, furthering the dreadful tone. The cold, dead eyes of the city cause Bladee to be physically cold, and the “I froze” could be interpreted as either that the coldness of the city has caused him to become emotionally cold and distant, or that the corrupt attitude of the city has entirely overpowered him, and he is frozen in place, unknowing of how to react, or even that he is dead, physically frozen.

“And it's like it demands life, it demands life/To die, to die, to die tonight/To die tonight, a sacrifice/A sanctioned kill”. This lyric is spectacular. The diction “demands” is very striking. That it demands life. It is truly weird if you think about it. This idea could be applied to God as well. That god demanded life of us. The allusion to God would not be unusual in a Bladee song, but in this context, it seems to be to sacrifice. Sacrifice demands life, and it’s “sanctioned”. Someone or something demands life, and most likely Bladee’s life in particular. This could be interpreted as general dislikers of Bladee attempting to pull him down, or even as something such as a deal with the devil, which would further the duality previously discussed of Requiem speaking on blessedness and God, and Obsessed with Death communicating evil and sin. Additionally, the imagery of death links back to the idea that “I froze” could mean death, and the cold that overtakes one's body in death.

“The buildings commit, it slits your wrist, you cease to exist/You feel nothing, you feel nothing, you feel nothing/The curtains are ripped, the cranium split, and in the blood spill/A temple is built, a tower of guilt, a tower of sin”. The use of imagery in these lines and Bladee’s delivery of these lines are beautiful, genuinely poetic. He furthers the personification, the buildings come to life, “it slits your wrist”, the ambiguity of this line furthers the dark tone of the song. Do the buildings slit your wrist? Or is this something you do to yourself? This method is generally one of suicide and is referenced in a previously released Bladee song Wrist Cry, though it could also be interpreted as both – the cold, evil city pushes him to the edge, and he commits. But delegating to the buildings the blame of the committing of the actual act is very powerful. To not take responsibility for your own suicide. The actual act of it. A very strong line. Next, “cease to exist/You feel nothing”, when you die is it over? This seems to imply so, especially with the repetition, but revisiting Requiem, “purpose beyond time” tells us differently, reinforcing the duality between the songs.

“The curtains are ripped, the cranium split, and in the blood spill/A temple is built, a tower of guilt, a tower of sin”. The imagery of the curtains being ripped reminds of a theater - when the curtains open to indicate the beginning of a show. But here, the curtains are “ripped”. This is a lot more violent, as though someone has been forced to perform before their time, and before they were ready. “The cranium split, and in the blood spill a temple is built”, to have the brutal imagery of a split cranium and a blood spill, right next to a temple – a sacred place, a place of worship – is crazy. It emphasizes the viciousness and the sinfulness. And these images have not just been placed next to one another, but the temple arises from within the blood, built on it. Does goodness come out of bad? Or is it a guise? A guise of goodness that capitalizes off of a bad situation, makes it seem pretty, to be more digestible to the public? Bladee furthers this imagery, “a tower of guilt, a tower of sin”, it is inferable that this is the capitalization of a bad situation – and not positively where you see the silver lining, but in a way where evil benefits off of a good person’s bad situations, leaving goodness in the dust. The tower – it's of guilt, but it goes beyond that, it's of sin. It is made of sin. It seems as though the guilt simply passes through, it is not there to stay, it’s a fleeting feeling that is quickly dismissed, to make space for further sin. Additionally, the negative connotations of a tower – a tall, spindly building, beginning in hell and reaching for the heavens in the sky.

Bladee then goes on to say “Destruction, desolation/Desperation, despair []/Destination nowhere”, the alliteration of the letter “d” creates hard, plosive sounds, where the abruptness emphasizes each word, furthering the eerie mood of the song. This all works to reinforce the ideas of evil and sin, and by ending the lyric with “destination nowhere”, ending it with a single word that fails to fall into the alliteration, “nowhere” holds a lot of power. Additionally, it is a beautiful line, as though you’re running with no direction, you just need to get far away. The whole song feels like a dark, thunderous, rainy night, where the only hints of light come from the intermittent flashes of lightning. There is some irony in that as well. That the only sense of reassurance emanates from someplace frightening.

And of course, it’s Bladee, so he must bring in and end on, “Yes, I must confess, (I want your flesh)” – cannibalism as a metaphor for love. Though it may not necessarily be love this time. It could also be him taking on the perspective of the city. But why does the city want him dead? And specifically him? What is it that he has? Or is it a generalization?

Reverso — Shooting Star-Étoile Filante (self-released)

On previous recordings, Reverso has explored the music of French composers Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Ravel, linchpins of the early 20th century classical repertoire. Here, the trio of trombonist Ryan Keberle, pianist Frank Woeste, and cellist Vincent Courtois are inspired by another French composer, Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), the short-lived but prodigiously talented artist who was the first female to win the Prix de Rome. Such was the grief of her sister Nadia that she gave up her own promising composition career, devoting herself to pedagogy, a teacher to many Europeans and a raft of American expats. Reverso titles the recording Shooting Star as an acknowledgement of Lili’s extraordinary gifts. While the composer would likely have heard little jazz, her work serves as an excellent starting point for the original tunes written in response to it by Reverso. One wonders about balance issues a trio with this complement might encounter, but it never seems to be an issue, with Reverso careful to make every note heard.

“La Muse '' opens the album with liquid ostinatos from Woeste and legato melodies traded between Keberly and Courtois. “Obstination '' has a syncopated Iberian cast that recalls the craze for Spanish traditional music among the Impressionists. The solos use distinct registers, with Courtois flying high and Keberle playing resonant pedal tones. Woeste’s solo is a modal post-bop excursion that celebrates the off-kilter rhythms of the piece. Likewise, “Resilience” explores rhythmic variety, with alternations between quick polyrhythms and solos that vary it. A slow tune serves as an overarching motif. There is a bridge where small, repetitive segments take over before a return to the opening material, Keberle playing the main tune in octaves with Courtois.

The “Nocturne” is a venerable form, usually for solo piano. Reverso captures the mood with sculpted delicacy. A repeated tenor note in the piano underscores a chromatic bass-line alongside melancholy chords, as well as corruscating melodies between trombone and cello. Woeste brings out a filigreed soprano register melody in the bridge before returning to harmonies from the opening. Doubling of the melody by Keberle and Courtois gives way to another varied duet between them, culminating in a high trombone cry and a quick outro of repeated passagework. “Ma Jolie” has a bluesy trombone solo that is repeated with the cello playing liberal slides. The central section is led by Woeste, playing a zesty bit of cabaret music. Keberly returns to his solo while Courtois plays a pizzicato bass-line. The piano drops in with tasty harmonic fills. The quick cabaret music returns, and the piano and cello provide a sinuous take on the main tune to close.

“En Avant” deftly channels the texture and melodic approach of Impressionism, a style that, while not encompassing, appeared in Lili’s music. Courtois’s solo features Eastern sliding tone. Gamelan and other non-Western artists fascinated French musicians, notably Debussy, at the 1889 Paris Exhibition, and they continued to incorporate its signatures for decades. Keberle’s solo, on the other hand, is a more raucous affair, and Woeste plays dexterous small cells and a repeated stepwise progression. The close returns to referencing Impressionism and ends with halting utterances.

“Requiem” is a touching memento mori for Lili, with a haunting minor key melody that is deftly varied in its doublings. “Shine” too has a melancholy cast. However, the somber mood doesn’t prevail. “Lili’s Blues” imagines an introduction of Lili to “Le Jazz Hot,” with a plethora of glissandos and rollicking swing.

The recording closes with “Dernier Moteur” (“The Final Action”) in which bucolic riffs and mysterious, angular melodies are played by Woeste, Courtois adds a sumptuous solo, and Keberly provides countermelodies with slow glissandos that distress the crispness of the rest of the proceedings. A denouement is completed surprisingly, with the piano simply stopping to conclude the piece.

Creating “new standards” of early twentieth century music would be a far less imaginative choice than the approach taken on Shooting Star, where Lili Boulanger’s biography is as much an inspiration as her music. Reverso inhabits a musical space both of homage and innovation.

The below might seem like I'm gassing you up or being overly sugary and sweet; but I cannot underestimate how much I mean every single word. Your fics were in my first round of xfiles fics ever; and they were cemented into my cracks before I ever got adventurous enough to feed the addiction and read 800+ authors.

This'll be long, so I included a cut.

I spent 15-20 minutes grabbing link after link after link because... quite simply, your fics are grafted into my brain because of how many rereads I've done-- I can't separate them from each other, I can't pick favorites, I can't. I had to go by my tip top, cannot-pass-by-without-reading fics:

Whispered Words (Tumblr): Everything about this is perfection. Every time I read someone else's cancer fic, I immediately think of this one (and hunt it down for a reread.) Scully's symptoms, how and when Mulder notices; the blend of sickfic and angst and fluff together, no parts outrivaling the other... it's, again, perfection.

A New Day Has Come: It's such a cornerstone of my earliest cancer fics that this is how I always expect Mulder to react in other fics I read-- it's automatic programming at this point.

Every. Single. IVF fic you've written. I kid you not. To name a few (because it's not fun to just read "I liked it, lol" without some examples):  Name Calling/Archive is the pinnacle post IVF failure: the best, ohmyword. Unnamed post IVF treatment fic and Five Minutes - Chapter 1 are seared into my brain as a part one and two; but if it's a sheer numbers game? Five Minutes - Chapter 2 wins out. It's just... how do you hold a moonbeam in your hand, y'know? How can I describe something that IS me? I refer you to Scully's Memento Mori speech-- she says it more eloquently than I do. ;))))

Every. Single. AU Requiem fic and S8 fic and S9 fic and S11 fam fic. You do loving relationships so well: they talk, they breathe, they exist like real people. I treasure the S8 fics you wrote from my prompts and reread them frequently--though I forgot to label the second and need to find that link hmmmmmm. I'll close this by thinking of random moments in your fics that twirl around and around in my brain and put them down here:

Mulder waking Scully up by sneezing in her hair in Rain King.

Mulder and Scully crying after her recovery in Redux II.

Scully's annoyance and Mulder's complete stillness in the airport while waiting for their luggage in Five Minutes Chapter 2.

The hilarious way you wrote Mulder and Scully and Krycek and Doggett and Reyes in an Essence AU (Will is born in the car while they drive away from the FBI.)

Scully's head being squeezed like an orange in the baseball bat attack fic, and Mulder's irate panic from afar ("HE HIT HER")

Mulder's tie got stuck in a copier and Scully has to help him out (and Skinner doesn't even want to know.)

Maggie's not a fool when she catches Mulder and Scully a day or two after Chimera.

Mulder sobbing and holding Scully after the other agents tricked him into thinking she'd died in a car accident.

Diana locks Mulder and Scully up in the One Son fort for the night; and Scully's hurt and Mulder's hurt and their reconciliation and re-understanding is one of the fics I turn to when I need to sleep but also need a story to focus on. Makes my brain go wild.

TFWID Mulder having nightmares of his past lives with Scully. Another one of those stories that sets my brain on fire.

Revival Mulder's psychic powers comes back and he tells Scully in the restaurant (part I) and later senses their daughter's heartbeat (part II.)

An ending

Je vois que je ne suis pas le seul à penser ainsi vis à vis des anniversaires et je m'en réjouis! Encore pourrait-il s'agir d'une occasion de célébrer la mort, d'autres occasions sont plus essentielles et adéquates aux requiems...

Ne serrait-ce pas mieux de tenter de trouver des moments de célébrations - à sa propre façon - au sein de toutes les autres semaines de l'année et à côté de cela, faire une sorte de memento mori spécial le jour de notre anniversaire plutôt que de prétendre à "célébrer" en cette occasion (trop) rare? Ou juste faire en sorte qu'il s'agisse d'un jour comme les autres puisque après tout, c'est le cas!
