when the show suddenly places heavy emphasis on themes of mortality and responsibility for others while a plucky newcomer repeatedly tries to prove themselves to the rest of the characters in increasingly risky ways that go against their original values coming into the show

Recently finished devouring the Mentalist and it was not until season 7 that I found a dynamic compelling. Beyond the overarching mystery and general episodic adventures.
Season 7 introduced rookie agent Michelle Vega, played by Josie Loren. I was highly skeptical about this at first. Before she even appeared on screen, I worried she would be another pretty face to spark a controversial office romance. Keep in mind that I like Grace Van Pelt, but did not want a repeat of her and Wayne Rigsby. Fortunately, wee Agent Vega was a pleasant surprise. Yes, Wylie developed a romantic interest in her, but it was Michelle’s relationship with Kimball Cho that hooked me.
Admittedly, I waited with baited breath that they would have a ridiculous love triangle with Wylie or have this impressionable young agent date her senior. So very thankfully, neither of those scenarios resulted. Michelle latched onto Cho for mentoring. Due to Patrick Jane’s antics, the FBI proved nothing like she expected. However, Cho does his best to go by the book and this greatly appealed to Michelle. As a military daughter, Cho likely reminded her of the best parts of her deceased father.
Though she always tried to present herself as a serious professional, Michelle could not mask her childlike glee at any opportunity to work alongside Cho. Her admiration for him felt so refreshing. Finally, someone who truly appreciated Cho instead of fawning over Jane’s every whimsical stunt.
Genuinely contrite for deceiving Cho, Michelle apologized profusely and worked hard to regain his trust. I liked this because the situation did not demonize either of them. Michelle showed no resentment towards Cho. To the contrary, she only strived to do better in the future.
I love Cho as Michelle’s mentor. Again, it would have been so easy to have her fangirl Jane. Not every youngster thrives under the extremely free-spirited type. Some need the consistency of the stickler. Cho is honest, does not hand out kudos easily, and has a protective streak as part of his tutelage. For those like Michelle, this adds up to the perfect package.
While Cho tried to maintain his usual aloof demeanor, he took a clear liking to the newbie agent. She quickly became his Padawan of sorts. This came with some drawbacks for Michelle, particularly when Cho punished her for lying to him. He started the reprimand by praising her good work, but her performance did not get her off the hook. Cho’s displeasure with her made Michelle very sympathetic. Compared to everything Jane gets away with, her lie about having permission to go into the field seemed fairly harmless. That’s likely the reason Cho did not let her off easily. Jane has special snowflake immunity, but Cho would not want the younger agents developing similar dishonest habits.

no. NO, I refuse this. Not if Cho’s gonna cry. Nope, not canon.

Listen, I'd already been spoiled that Vega was gonna die, but that was, no joke, the stupidest death possible.

People out there saying that Jisbon will name their daugther Michelle if she is a girl when everybody (A.K.A Me) knows that Michelle will be the daugther of Cho/Jason.
