The Past returns (1 Year blog special)
Lightning cracks across the sky just like it had done last year.  The wind blows rapidly as trees sway while someone works on their computer, Akira has returned. His finger clack away at his keyboard as he chomps down cheeseballs. There seems to be an odd celestial event occurring, the sky swirls a bit as it looks like rain is about to break from the sky, but it does not.
Tumblr media
Akira: The Samidare Paradox should allow for a weakening of the temporal barrier, at least temporarily.
He decides to test it, Akira creates another doorway, and focuses on a moment in the past before plucking someone and dropping them in 2022. As the mist subsides, a man with oddly shaped hair drops his knife on the ground.
Tumblr media
What is this place?
Tumblr media
Hello Mikado Shinsen..or should i say, chairman of the Victims Catharsis Committee?
His cold eyes look around the world. Something has changed, time had marched on.
Tumblr media
So: The disaster which was foretold of came to pass?
Tumblr media
Yes. Junko Enoshima rose like a force of nature...
he pauses as he looks at Akira.
Tumblr media
If i were alive, she wouldn’t have. The Apex Detective would have sought to her demise. That was Samidare’s problem, she proclaimed to be about the greater good, but when push came to shove, she decided to save one life over billions.
Tumblr media
If the Detective King Couldn’t stop her, then how could you?
Tumblr media
I had connections, dear boy, an entire network of recruiters, judges, politicians, union bosses and oh so much more in my back pocket.
Tumblr media
So, we should just kidnap Yui right?
Tumblr media
No. We should set in moment an event to truly engineer her downfall. Not as fancy as kidnapping her and her loved ones, but one to truly end her career as a detective, thus calling into every case she’s ever been involved in, and once that’s over, she’ll beg to be sent back to where she came from.
However, the sky soon became unstable. The fabric of time was starting to unravel, the just didn’t know it yet.

Danganronpa Kirigiri - List of Detective Library members & their monster reps
In Danganronpa Kirigiri, the Triple Zero detectives of the Detective Library were based upon/referenced four types of monsters in fiction: ghost, werewolf, vampire and doppleganger. I always thought that was a pretty cool choice for Kitayama to go down and go to thinking what other types of monsters the other detectives would represent.
Which is basically what below is - a list of every named Detective Library member and monster would best fit them, in book order. As well as who represents the four monsters I mentioned above.
Main Duo:
Kyoko Kirigiri - Angel of Death (Now for Kyoko's monster I wanted something that best represents Kyoko's relation with Death and, ultimately her benevolent nature behind her stonefaced mask. So I chose her as the metaphorical Angel of Death - someone who brings about the end of those who have Fallen by uncovering the truth behind their misdeeds. Yet, in doing so, is also saving lives of those that were in danger because of the Fallen's actions. She also attends a religious school so it ties back well with those origins.
Yui Samidare - Powers (A type of angel in Christian theology and apart of the Middle Order of angels. Her whole thing is being a detective to protect others from evil and Powers are types of angels that hold the power to dispel or defeat evil. Also calls back to Yui being from a religious school. If I had to choose something else, I'd make Yui a guardian angel to match Kyoko being an angel of death. But, for reasons below, decided to forego it to complete another set )
DRK1:
Kou Inuzuka - Hellhound (Kou surname 'Inuzaka' contains the word for dog in Japanese, and Kou himself is an arsonist. Of the reps, I think this is one of the most fitting I've come up with)
Eigo Amino - Robot (Eigo is said to have zero presence or stands out, and he's a detective that poses as a businessman AKA a cog in a machine of office life. So I figured a robot was the best thing to compare him to)
Shiita Enbi - Zombie (Based upon the whole deal with him being dead all along, and also Tadashi's deal with having no legs, so kind of shambling about, reminds me of those types of zombies in horror games or shows)
Johnny Arp - Werewolf (From DRK Vol 6 - referred to heavily with wolfish traits or personality)
Gekka Ryuzoji - Vampire (From his design & titles; he's heavily based upon Count Dracula from the titular novel)
Rei Mikagami - Ghost (Comes from his epithet of 'Ghost in the Mirror' and his own ghostly ability to seemingly disappear from the scene with ease. Honorary mention goes to 'unicorn' given that's what his alias, Licorne, means in French).
DRK2:
Taehime Uozumi - Mermaid (Made her mermaid given her surname, Uozumi, is literally 'sleeping with the fishes'...and, okay, the pun with her fake profession was too tempting to pass up)
Suisei Nanamura - Father Time (Suisei is obsessed with time and managing it, so making him Father Time seemed pretty natural
Mikado Shinsen - Doppleganger (From his epithet, the Variationist, and skills as a master of disguise. Honorary mention goes to him being referred to as a Shinigami/Reaper by Chage and the connection he does have with the dead)
DRK 3
Hajiki Yaki - Devil (His DSC card is 666 which is considered a devilish number in Abrahamic religon, and his own thing is being a detective that goes against gambling - a type of deal with the devil?)
Salvador Yadorigi Fukuro - Gorgon (Okay, now, admittedly, this one is one of my weakest, but was inspired to call him a gorgon due to his own whole thing with his special eyes, and how he stunned Keisuke from DRK4 with the look of them. Stunning? Turning people to stone? A stretch? Kind of, but I still think it also kind of works so...)
Sachi Mizuiyama - Elf (Okay, beyond her getting an elf because she's short, was also inspried to give it to her based upon elves appearing young when they're actually older - something that's been pointed out about Sachi - and how elves/fairy-ish folk tend to have skewed moralities. Something that skewed me towards Sachi and her whole deal)
Korisu Kakitsubata - Succubus (Also one of my weakest, yet this one just feels so fitting. She dresses provocatively and acts seemingly benevolent, but that's hiding a malicious front to get away with claiming a soul. Plus, another case of her being related to fire and Succubi being from Hell - it just kind makes itself work out)
Suntetsu Shirasu - Underworld Gatekeeper (Chose this after a lot of internal debating, but decided this might be the most fitting? Like Gozu & Mezu or Cerberus, Suntetsu's actions decided who remains in the living and who has to remain in the afterlife. If there was a more fitting word for this type of monster, I'll gladly hear it out)
DRK4:
Tsukiyo Nada & Nazuna Toakitsu - Dominion & Virtue (Types of Angels in Christian theology and apart of the Middle Order set of angels with the Powers. Tsukiyo is Dominion given they govern celestial bodies & Tsukiyo's name refers to the night sky itself - ok that and her domineering personality. Naz is Virtue since one of its job is to bolster faith, and Naz is the most supportive of the duo in terms of helping out Yui to Salvador to Tsukiyo as well. Plus, they round out Yui being Power and also coming from a religious school)
DRK5:
Tatsutora Oboro - Bakaneko (Ok, the weakest one out of the lot, but also didn't really want to spend too much time on a minor guy like Oboro. As such, with part of his name, 'Tora', meaning tiger the idea that came to mind was a simple monster cat!)
DRK 6:
Motosuke Suzuyari - Yeti (He's in the icy mountains, described as being kind of wild looking. It writes itself)
Ayako Saiko - Witch (@drmedicsgamesurgery holds credit for the intiial placeholder as being a 'Mad Scientist'. However, mad scientists aren't technically monsters, I decided to swap it with the mad scientist of monster: a witch)
DRK 7:
Shiroko Yukimura - Yuki-onna (I got this based upon her part of her name 'Shiro' meaning white and the fact she appeared in a snowy setting)
Senshi Kadomi - Giant (Big guy with a knack for violence to get what he wants? Yeah, Senshi was pretty much hardlocked into being a giant from early on)
Kanji Yuhain - The 1st Horseman/Conquest/Pestilence/White Rider (I went with the 1st Horseman of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, after being inspired from Yuhain riding to Sirius on top of a white horse which symbolizes conquest or pestilence in the modern age. Both fit Yuhain as a guy who seeks to conquer the detective world as the King of Detectives and given his corrupt nature, he can very much be considered a pestilence.)

I just finished reading Dangaronpa Kirigiri and I gotta say
I think the main antagonist of it Mikado Shinsen is Junkos Enoshimas dad
i don't really wanna go full theory mode on it as i saw what happened last time the someone made a theory on danganronpa kirigiri novel, but i do have my reasons for believing it i wouldn't believe it if i thought it was untrue so i guess if anyone wants to know why i think so I'll answer.

Every once in a while, I think about how Jin Kirigiri ruined Shinsen’s prophecy… (continued after explanation)
(a brief explanation for those who don’t know: Shinsen saw that Kyoko Kirigiri would eventually be the savior of the impending apocalypse, and in order to make his prophecy become true, he followed the Kirigiri family closely and put together the victim’s catharsis committee in order to pretty much give Kyoko the trauma she needed to be the ultimate detective, and then he died to fulfill the prophecy)
… by firing Kyoko right before she outed Junko and Mukuro as the ultimate despairs and planning the MTEIHH, and in theory she could’ve completed stopped it from happening and then the whole things with Shinsen would’ve had a purpose, but he obviously fired her and forbid her from pursuing the issue further, on account that she couldn’t harm herself or put herself in harms way.
So Yui and literally everyone involved in the VCC died for no reason…
Thanks Jin…

have you read the last drk volume yet? idk if you read japanese well or not but itd be cool if you could spoil the ending :3c
i haven’t finished it, bc i was going reread from the beginning but i took a look at the ending for you. im glad i did. yui’s birthday is august 31st, which is Independence Day in my country. she’s a virgo. ive been wanting that info since 2013. drk ending spoilers under the cut
yui, as theorized from the start, died. she was killed in an explosion in the Sirius observatory where her and kirigiri first met, and that’s also how kirigiri hurts her hands. some of yuis final thoughts were that she wishes that she could’ve been better, lived a life without making mistake — that she were a talented detective instead of just some normal stupid high school girl. she could’ve been able to protect kirigiri. in the end, yui thinks, i couldn’t protect a single thing.
kirigiri begs yui to stay with her, to live, that kirigiris going to make sure she’s going home alive, hold on, pull yourself together, please, but yui accepts her fate, and thanks kirigiri. her last words are her apologizing for treating her like a criminal and asking how she could make it up to her because at this rate she’ll..... and her last thoughts are about kirigiri too:
you were right all along, so stand proud. oh, cherry blossom petals. they’re beautiful, aren’t they, kirigiri-chan? you’re very.......
samidare yui dies.
kyouko kirigiri wakes up in a hospital bed with ruined hands, she wants to see yui. she ends up meeting salvador, and the girls from the saint annes academy, tsukiyo and nazuna from the libra girls academy case that was in vol 4 & 5 I believe?? (check jess’ blog bc I’m still working through them) because they also knew yui. salvador goes over her injuries—hypothermia, severe burns on her hands—and says it’s a miracle she survived
“and what about yui-oneesama?” kirigiri asked. those were the first words she spoke in that hospital.
“about her...” yadorigi turned away, and the time he spent grasping for words was more than enough of an answer. kirigiri could easily guess what came next: “It was too late for her.”
“i see...”
kirigiri turned to face the curtain, and her reaction baffled the girls and tsukiyo who was with salvador. why the fuck wasn’t kirigiri crying?! she loved yui, didn’t she? they were friends right?! where was kirigiris heart?! don’t you pity her at the very least?! are you even human?! such and such. salvador tells her to cut it out. though even though kirigiri didn’t outwardly emote, she was doing her thing compartmentalizing her emotions unhealthily which was the family way u know.
in the end, tsukiyo weeps all by herself, and nazuna holds onto her. meanwhile kirigiris low key having a crisis
even still, am i detective? kirigiri asked herself. is she willing to die as a detective? she’s not a detective for the sake of helping other people, that’s just how she was bred and raised. however, the days spent by yuis side taught her that even she could feel helpless — she thought she was proud to be born as a detective, but maybe she was just clinging onto that to compensate for something else. in the end, there’s no one to protect her, and no one, not even she herself, could save the the person dearest to her.
salvador starts talking about the committee and shinsen will being passed along to new people. they need her help. but kirigiri’s angsting really really hard and says no. in her own words: 今さら自分に何ができるというの。霧切響子はもう死んだ。あの日、彼女と一緒に。
but what can she do now, on her own? kirigiri kyouko has already died. she died that day, together with her (yui).
so yeah she’s having an awful time. and she gets discharged when the cherry blossoms start falling and covering the dreary snow. neat! the irony! she goes back to Sirius bc there was a crossbow missing from the scene, and she won’t rest until this one incident is solved. shen then figures out who fucked her and yui over so bad. it could only be him, it could only be shinsen fucking mikado.
we then learn her grandpa was detained bc he was a suspect in shinsens murder, and she talked to him about yui. kirigiri gets upgraded to dsc 910. she finally has a 0 on her card like she always wanted... she can’t feel happy about it. this number doesn’t mean anything to her, anymore.
she gets a letter from yui, that she wrote in case she died first. talking about how she knew one day that she couldn’t be there for her forever, but she hoped she could take some of kirigiris burdens from her, or maybe she just made everything worse. yui had her own baggage, and couldn’t support her properly, but yui knows one day she’ll have people who love and support her like yui did, like she wanted to. she tells her to take breaks and to take care of herself — yui says she’s knows she’s more trouble than she’s worth, so thank you for sticking with her kirigiri-chan. and goodbye.
she remembers a conversation she had with salvador—yui saved her, and now she’s gone . like all the times before that, yui used her body to cover her so she wouldn’t freeze to death after the building exploded, and kirigiri couldn’t help her.
“hey, kirigiri-chan, did I take some of that weight off your shoulders?”
everything is silent. no cars on the road, no sound.
kirigiri loses her shit, she breaks down completely despite trying so hard to suppress her feelings.
emotions are not needed when it comes to detectives... she’s been following that adage all her life, so why is it so hard to follow now? why can’t she stop tearing up? she’s ruining her bandages with how much she’s scrubbing her eyes from crying. finally she just falls to her knees and wails. she’s sorry, she’s so sorry yui-oneesama. she keeps calling her name, willing her to just pop in right next to her, because she knows she just needs to call her name, and yui will trip over herself to come to help her. yui-oneesama will definitely come save her. big sis yui. big sis yui....
so she’s not okay! and I’m not ok. I am crying. there’s a time skip where kirigiri goes to yuis hometown to visit her grave. she’s happy to see that other people gave her offerings too, she sets flowers down and prays, and asks her to keep watching over her.
She calls salvador and agrees to help. years pass and she goes to hopes peak. naegi finds her dsc after she dropped it, bc he was looking for something sakura threw. naegis like wtf is this also are u on a job how old were u when u started being a detective and kirigiris like UGHHHH go away but then she’s like... hmmm whomst is this little twink
the last lines of the book are “fine then, let’s have a chat, naegi-kun.”

Last time I asked about ranking the protagonists along with the spinoffs. Can you do a one with the antagonists?
Im going of the thought you soecifically mean like masterminds behind a thing so ill base it on that
1. Junko Enoshima (DR1, IF) how can it not be.
2. Tsumugi Shirogane (V2, V3) super interesting and also very pretty
3. Yasuke Matsuda (DR0) (using him instead of junko again since he was a major antagonistic force in the end)
4. Kyoka (KGS) its just kirigiri plant
5. Izuru Kamukura (DR2) god
6. Monaka Towa (UDG, UDH) crazy child
7. Mikado Shinsen (DRK) literally the grim reaper
8. Kazuo Tengan (DR3) his plan eould have worked if not for some dumbass factors he didnt take into account so he gets the bonk hammer
9. Shuji Fujigawa (DRGKK) just kinda stupid
10. Jutaro Akafuku (DRSF:MNWDE) kind of a nothing guy with some interesting ideas
11. Orvin Elevator (DRT) # Fuckazuya
Unless im dummy that should be it

fun Kyouko facts ! it should come as no surprise that Kyouko suffers intense bouts of nightmares due to her complex ptsd — but having someone by her side upon waking up is more likely to make things worse in her disorientated state than it is to provide any comfort.
these moments of paranoia began shortly after discovering her maternal grandfather’s body in the backyard of the Uzuchi estate when she was thirteen years old, after her second duel noir. the realization that Mikado Shinsen, her grandfather’s former prodigy and the founder of the committee for the salvation of the victims of crime, had been able to dispose of and replace her guardian without raising any suspicions shook Kyouko to her core.
while she’s managed to quell her paranoia into something manageable, the fear that such a sinister man could be hiding beneath anyone’s eyes has never entirely left her.
the disorientation of waking up from a nightmare leaves her senses clouded enough for this fear to push past her voice of reason. she’ll jump to the conclusion of her companion not being who they appear to be — the thought of them being Shinsen, or another imposter with ill intentions. it will be as if she hadn’t woken from the nightmare in the first place, feeling equally terrified and unsafe.

Oh yeah, you’re right! The back blurb is available now too.
Let’s see...
Ten years since the beginning of the series comes the final volume of Dangan Ronpa Kirigiri!
The final case orchestrated by their arch enemy and strongest assassin of the Committee for the Salvation of the Victims of Crime, Shinsen Mikado.
It will test her bond with Samidare Yui, Onee-sama?!
The girls are beset by the detective’s fate, at the intersection of the Kirigiri family’s bloodline (destiny) and Samidare’s regrets (trauma)!
This is the past of SHSL Detective, Kirigiri Kyouko, as depicted by Kitayama Takekuni--known as Physics Master Kitayama and flag-bearer of true mystery--based on direct notes from Dangan Ronpa scenario writer Kodaka Kazutaka.
And with this, we have the grand finale of real Dangan Ronpa!

Danganronpa Kirigiri (3) - Chapter 5, Part 2
Table of Contents | Previous: Chapter 5, Part 1
I left the dorm building. It pained me to leave Kyoko all by herself, but I couldn’t turn back now. Dashing out of the academy grounds, I headed towards the Kirigiri residence. Time was of the essence.
Kyoko’s house stood at the peak of a gently sloping road. The Japanese-style mansion overlooked the world from atop its high perch, asserting its dominance over the entire region. A white wall complete with an imposing gate guarded the vast plot of land. From the bottom of the hill, I watched as clouds suddenly filled the sky, casting shadows over my surroundings. The mansion was trying to intimidate me, urging me to retreat.
I mustered up the courage to scale the hill and stepped up to the gate. Knowing that nobody would appear no matter how much I knocked, I continued walking along the wall. Soon, I came across a small wooden door—Kyoko and the other residents probably used it as the main entrance and exit.
I tried opening it, but as expected, it wouldn’t budge. The lock was probably engaged.
The past me would turn around and leave, but I knew I had to press forward regardless of the dangers ahead. That conviction strengthened as I stood before the mansion.
Ever since my visit here on Christmas night, I had a nagging suspicion that something was wrong, that perhaps I had been making a grave misunderstanding.
That doubt mainly revolved around Kyoko’s grandfather.
Fuhito Kirigiri was the current head of the Kirigiri detective clan. He was said to travel around the world, solving cases at the request of foreign governments.
Additionally, he was a central figure involved in establishing the Detective Library fifteen years ago, along with the leader of the Crime Victims’ Salvation Committee, Mikado Shinsen. There seemed to be bad blood between them. What happened fifteen years ago? Only the two of them knew.
Despite being a founding member, Fuhito opposed the introduction of the Detective Shelf Classification system, believing that receiving a rank as a detective dishonored the Kirigiri name. But now, fifteen years later, Kyoko, who had inherited the Kirigiri name, was registered and ranked in the Detective Library. And she told me her grandfather was the one who registered her.
Was there a contradiction? Or did those fifteen years change Fuhito?
That seemed unlikely. He dutifully continued his detective work as the head of the Kirigiri clan. There was no reason for him to have a change of heart.
Why register his precious successor in the Detective Library? To allow her to learn and grow as a detective?
That would be too shallow of a reason. The Kirigiri clan took pride in their identity as detectives, so much that they prioritized their work over the death of family members. That was how stubborn they were, how much they were willing to sacrifice. Under no circumstances would they intentionally register with the Detective Library, knowing that they would be archived alongside countless other detectives. They wouldn’t sell the Kirigiri name short like that.
However, Kyoko had her own personal objectives, and willfully sought to boost her DSC rank. But she didn’t register herself with the Library; her grandfather did. That was what I couldn’t wrap my head around.
There was something else that aroused my suspicions.
Kyoko mentioned that her grandfather primarily was active overseas. In fact, he was currently abroad and couldn’t conveniently return to Japan. Even on New Year’s Day, he was in a different country. Kyoko had wished him Happy New Year over the phone and asked him, “Is it too early for that where you are?” She was likely referring to the time difference.
Long ago, Kyoko had also traveled and lived abroad with her grandfather for an extended period. Her mother died of illness when she was seven, but she didn’t return to live in Japan. According to her, she spent about five years traveling around the world with her grandfather. After her mother’s death, she likely found a stopping point in her work to visit Japan once, but returned to her itinerant lifestyle soon afterwards—at least, that was my theory.
She claimed to have arrived in Japan by herself two and a half months ago to attend school. I asked if she was staying in this mansion with her grandfather, and she nodded in response, adding that they employed live-in housekeepers as well.
After that, I even met her grandfather in person, but something still didn’t feel right—his location was difficult to pin down.
One thing that struck me as odd was that her grandfather was at this mansion on Christmas night, but called from some faraway country on New Year’s Day. Of course, that was entirely within the realm of possibility, but didn’t that amount of traveling seem excessive? I had disregarded that suspicion of mine, convincing myself that constant traveling was part and parcel of the life of a globetrotting detective.
I should have asked Kyoko about her grandfather back then. But she avoided talking about herself and reacted strongly whenever the topic of family was brought up, so I found it difficult to probe into her personal life.
I was on the verge of uncovering the source of all my suspicions. But the white wall towering before me was in my way. I looked up. Scaling it would be a walk in the park.
Everything around was still. For some reason, the whole neighborhood felt lifeless and barren. No cars in the street, no neighbors walking their dogs.
This was the perfect opportunity.
With my prided vertical jump, I leapt up and grabbed the edge of the wall. I hoisted myself up to my chest, swung my legs over, and climbed up. Piece of cake. All that remained was to jump down on the other side. I sprung into the air like a cat, landing on the ground without making a sound.
The temperature felt a few degrees cooler inside the premises, cold enough that several patches of snow remained in the yard. A path of stepping stones continued through the well-maintained shrubbery to the rear entrance of the mansion.
Was there nobody home, or was whoever inside trying to conceal themselves?
I prayed for the former.
Keeping close to the ground, I approached the mansion. Since the storm shutters were closed, I couldn’t see through the windows. If someone were inside, surely the shutters would be open.
Snow clouds hung overhead.
What had happened to the bright morning sun? A thin veil of darkness encompassed the mansion. If anything, this was convenient, as it allowed me to hide in the shadows.
I pressed my hand against one of the storm shutters. It wasn’t locked. As quietly as possible, I pushed it up very slightly and peered in through the window.
The dark hallway was empty.
Staying outside wasn’t going to get me anywhere, so I decided to find a way in.
I circled the perimeter of the building. As a last resort, I could break a window and sneak in. Of course, I had never done anything daring like that before, but it was do or die. There had to be something inside.
While sneaking around the corners of the building, I gazed out into the yard, when all of a sudden, a noise echoed out from behind me.
After barely managing to stifle a scream, I turned to the source of the sound.
The window I had looked through was now wide open.
Someone stuck their head out—a woman. She wore a white apron over a black knitted sweater and skirt, and was scanning around suspiciously. Her bangs were swept to the side, revealing nervous wrinkles on her forehead. Although she looked quite old, she was probably still youthful.
Was she one of the housekeepers?
I considered asking her if something had happened in the house. I started standing up, when my body suddenly froze.
The woman reached out to close the shutter—with a hand clutching a kitchen knife that gleamed dully in the shade.
I quickly retreated to the shadow of the building.
...Was she in the middle of cooking?
Or was there another explanation? Did she sense an intruder and prepare to fight back?
Even as the temperature continued to drop, unpleasant beads of sweat formed on my cheeks.
Was this my signal to leave?
I stepped out of the shadows and swiftly scuttled behind the shrubs. All around me was the open yard, with no other hiding place in sight.
I had to go back...
No, I couldn’t leave empty-handed. As much as time allowed, I would continue my investigation.
Making a break for it across the yard seemed like my best option.
My legs were ready.
Visualizing myself as an Olympic athlete sprinting down a hundred-meter track, I dashed into the yard. But halfway across, my legs stumbled over something and I fell over in dramatic fashion.
“Aargh!”
Something on the ground caused me to lose my footing. The soil here was softer and slightly sunk into the earth, something I hadn’t noticed on account of the snow. As I attempted to push myself up off of my back, my hand touched the ground.
And at the exact spot my hand touched, there lay a person in a kimono.
No... To be exact, the person was buried.
It was a corpse—one that was half-decomposed and half-skeletonized.
The clothing and build of the body seemed vaguely familiar. If my memory served me correctly, it was the man who greeted me and Kyoko on Christmas—Kyoko’s grandfather.
It had to be him.
It had to be.
It had to be!
Kyoko’s grandfather was dead.
But why?
Who killed him?
What in the world happened here?
The pain from tripping and an unnerving fear left me immobilized on the ground, with my limp muscles refusing to cooperate.
Of course, I was in no condition to realize what was happening behind me. That was why I didn’t notice the dark figure creeping up on me. Only when a shadow was cast over the ground around me did the sense of crisis finally kick in.
I turned around to discover the aproned woman wielding the knife over her shoulder.
This is it. This is where I die.
In that moment, I accepted my fate. It felt like I was detached from myself, like I was in a dream. The blade, threatening to send me back to cruel reality, came swinging down—
But the next thing I knew, the woman’s knees bent backwards.
Behind her stood a man in a suit and tie. He had swung the handle of a shovel into the back of the woman’s knees. Another swift hit to the shoulder, and the woman collapsed onto her back.
Without a moment’s delay, the man grabbed the woman’s arm, deftly flipped her onto her stomach, and restrained her hands behind her back.
As I sat paralyzed watching the scene unfold, the man signaled something with his finger: Run.
I staggered to my feet. Unable to channel strength into my legs, I limped over to the wall. Jumping over it in my current state would be impossible.
In the midst of my panic, the man grabbed my wrist and pulled me as he ran. Even as I tripped over my legs, I somehow kept up.
Before long, the wooden door came into view.
The man disengaged the lock and opened the door. He pushed me outside and followed quickly afterwards. After closing the door, he fished out a key from his pocket and stuck it into the keyhole.
“We’re leaving,” the man said as he started running down the slope.
A black car was parked at the corner of a house a short distance away. He unlocked its doors and urged me inside.
At that moment, I finally got a good look at the man’s face. He appeared to be in his mid-thirties. The determination in his eyes and his gallant expression reminded me of someone.
After I got into the passenger seat, the man started the engine. The reflection of the mansion in the rearview mirror gradually shrank. Beams of light poked through the clouds in front of us.
Before long, we arrived downtown and entered into traffic.
I finally snapped back to reality.
“Um... Thanks for saving me,” I said.
“You don’t have to thank me. However, I must ask that you forget ever meeting me.”
“U-Uh... Sure.”
A few moments of silence set in, which seemed to unsettle the man.
“I never expected things to end up this way,” he said between sighs, gripping the steering wheel with both hands.
“Um... Who are you...?”
“I cannot answer that.” He faced forward with a serious gaze. “It’s complicated. Please understand.”
I nodded sheepishly.
My eyes drifted to a black binder resting carelessly on the dashboard. The symbol on its cover looked familiar. If I remembered correctly...
It was the school symbol of Hope’s Peak Academy.
Noticing my gaze, the man grabbed the binder with one hand and slipped it into the pocket of the driver-side door.
I finally realized who he reminded me of: Kyoko Kirigiri.
Her father taught at Hope’s Peak Academy.
Then this man was...
“Are you Kyoko’s—Kyoko Kirigiri’s father?”
The man loosened his tie. He showed no interest in responding.
But I knew he had a key to the mansion, something only a handful of people had in their possession.
“What were you doing back there?” he asked.
“I’m one of Kyoko Kirigiri’s friends,” I said, intentionally repeating her name. “She’s been acting strange lately. She’s staunchly opposed to returning home. I feared something had happened, so I decided to investigate her house...”
“I see.” His response was succinct.
The car stopped at a red light.
He once again broke the silence. “Is she hurt?”
“No.”
“Good to hear.”
The car started up again.
“I think she stumbled upon that corpse,” I said. That would explain her fear and why she left her house, spending ten days wandering around and concealing her whereabouts.
But one thing didn’t make sense. The corpse was partially skeletonized, which meant the body had been buried for at least two or three months. So who was the grandfather I met two weeks ago on Christmas?
Oh...
The realization finally came to me.
Mikado Shinsen!
When had he started disguising as Kyoko’s grandfather? How long had he been deceiving Kyoko, and what was he hoping to achieve?
“Where is she?” the man asked.
“In my dorm room.”
“I see.”
“Do you want to see her?”
“I can’t face her like this,” the man answered, shrugging his shoulders.
He dropped me off at my dorm. I got out of the car without ever finding out his name. He ordered me to keep our meeting a secret from everyone, including her.
Filled with worry, I ran into my room. Kyoko had already awoken and was combing her hair on the side of the bed.
“Yui, welcome back. You’re just in time; I want you to braid my hair.”
I nodded and got behind her.
Her soft, beautiful hair was the embodiment of her purity. As I braided it into three strands, I couldn’t hold back the tears welling up in my eyes.
Why must the world be so cruel to this little girl?
I discreetly wiped away my tears.
I won’t forgive them. I won’t forgive anyone who hurts her.
—to be continued.
