Celebrate their first anniversary with Sébastien by  having him finally meet Andy and Quynh in person—Yusuf’s parents usually   aren’t free this time of the year, but they’re coming to visit during   Sébastien’s Christmas break. There was going to be Niccolò’s best   risotto and an apple cake, and it was going to be great. Instead, now,   they have this.

This AU is dense and layered and every single time I read it, I gain something new from it. Please mind the tags and the end notes, as they are relevant, but I think this fic is such a fascinating world and such a beautifully wrought snapshot of a family that’s as complicated and complex as the one we see in the movie. @terresdebrume is on tumblr as well and has written a couple of other fics for The Old Guard!

I keep meaning to but real life really dealt me a sucker punch at the end of 2020 (and, y’know, a large part of winter 2021) and I lost track. HOWEVER. I read the first 5 or 6 chapters and was captivated because I cannot tell you how few times I have read and felt the struggle of being a single parent the way that goldheartedsky writes it. Nicky’s struggles are so real and so realized that it’s gorgeous. It feels...gritty, in a way. I’ve started rereading it and I love how the interplay between all the characters feels like a quilt just coming together. SO while I haven’t read the whole thing (imagine my delight to see it’s (A) finished and (B) THERE’S A SECOND ONE??!!), I do think that this is a gorgeous read, just from what I read of the beginning. @goldheartedsky is on tumblr and has written other fics for The Old Guard!

Tags: Angst, Fluff, Introspection, angst, Kidfic Pairing: Joe/Nicky Rating: Gen Word Count: 4,820 Why I Love It: Okay, this isn’t strictly Joe and Nicky being parents, but I think that it counts because it shows what downtime for Joe and Nicky can look like at times. Nicky with his big heart and Joe with his vibrant soul deciding, we can make a difference here. It’s a sweet, sweet fic but it has some melancholy moments in the way that you would expect. My favorite way to think about this one, in particular, is thoughtful. It gives such care to how these men think about things and, in this instance, children. I could not find anywhere if mehm was on tumblr or not, but mehm has written more for The Old Guard on AO3!

Hear me out: I know that TECHNICALLY, this is not Joe and Nicky. I know that it may also not be what you’re looking for, but I feel like I HAVE to rec it. This fic is WONDERFUL. It’s wonderful and so well done that you don’t have to have seen either movie to understand it - single father Paolo reaches out and gets help from single father Daan. It’s incredibly slow burn but it’s so well done and I love that it feels like a facet of Joe and Nicky, to be honest. Fadagasaki does a great job of grounding it within the fandom at large and the movies themselves. My vote is to always give a chance and I hope you do! I could not find anywhere if fadagasaki is on tumblr, but they have written more for The Old Guard on AO3!

Porn with feelings, Going Back To Malta, long-haired Nicky, hair-pulling, anal sex, anal fingering, tender and sweet loving Joe/Nicky | Explicit | 4,430 words What I Loved: Okay, so first and foremost, this is definitely just straight up porn. And it is legit my favorite kind - It's so full of love and care and the sheer dedication they show for each other makes this fic sing.  It's absolutely lyrical and poetic and so spot-on. There are so many moments that take my actual breath away, in so far as how this fic has been written and how much care is given to their love. I said, in my original review of this, that it's like the warmth of Malta infuses the whole fic. It is breath-taking. For all of these reasons and more, this is one of my favorite cheer-up fics. @aphroditestummyrolls is on Tumblr and has written other fics for The Old Guard.

What I Loved: This fic fits in so perfectly with my headcanon that the team frequently plays games like capture the flag to learn how they fight together, especially once Nile joins. I love love love how Nile is exasperated but eager and how much fun the others have with her. This fic feels like a romp - Like, the most fun thing ever. It makes me want to play capture the flag and I suck at that game. This feels like a favorite movie, comforting and fun. AirGiodSLV is on AO3 and has written other fics for The Old Guard.

What I loved: This is the “How Quỳnh left the ocean” missing scene fanfic that I haven’t stopped thinking about since I read it. Quỳnh’s experience as a traumatized woman is treated with such care and respect, and I am utterly in love with the POV of the outsider through whom we engage with this story. It’s a love letter to marine science, an exploration of deep care and compassion making a difference when it’s needed most, and has moments that are deeply funny. The author is on Tumblr as @sixth-light and has written other fanfic for the Old Guard!

Setting aside, the care and joy that is written into this fic has stuck with me since I first read it a few months back. I love the way that they care about each other and how it develops from there. It’s such a great sports AU with The Old Guard as the main cast and I’ve recently reread it and had such a great time doing so. There’s three other fics in the series that are also SUPER enjoyable! Nicky’s taken her phone again, booking it down the terminal while speaking in soft, rapid Arabic. Nile trails after him, and idly notes the blood stain on the neck of the guitar case Nicky has slung over his back. Nicky’s arm must not have been fully healed when he zipped it shut. She hopes her own case (smaller, for a banjo, though it doesn’t hold a banjo the same way Nicky’s doesn’t hold a guitar) is blood-free.

They come through the doors into the main entry, stop, and Nile is halfway through a survey of the crowd when a small figure in overalls goes streaking toward them.

What I loved: On the surface, this is a sweet fic about a kid who loves her family and is meeting Nile. As you read more and more, it becomes slightly horrifying (if only because of the implications of it all) and sad. This is a perfect mix of melancholy feelings and I think about this fic A LOT.

It’s melancholy but it just settled in right under my heart and I love this fic.  The “Partners Weekend” at Merrick Industries was a bit of a joke, and in more ways than one. Who actually had time to spend a long couples weekend with people you worked with? But Joe had slaved away too many hours at his desk to blow off his chance at a promotion just like that. Particularly when all he had to actually do for it was spend a weekend in some manor house in the English countryside with his colleagues.

 Which led him to his current predicament: Who of his friends would agree to pose as his spouse for four days – and at one week’s notice?

Double fake-dating AU: Joe asks Quynh to pretend to be his wife for an important work social at Merrick Industries. Andy brings her good friend Nicky under a similar guise. Only of course none of them is actually straight, and of course none of them is willing to admit that.

A dumbasses-to-lovers story.

Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Alternate Universe - No Powers, Co-workers, Alternate Universe - Office, Office Party, Fake/Pretend Relationship, Secret Relationship, Secret Crush, basically something straight out of an early noughties British rom-com, only with nothing straight about it of course Joe/Nicky, Andy/Quynh | 81,601 words | Explicit What I Loved: Fake dating is one of those things that’s hit or miss for me and this one hits it dead on. I love this fic so much, it’s so perfectly wonderful. The miscommunication here isn’t so much that it feels disingenuous but it’s so much fun - it’s fun even when it’s frustrating. I was taken in by “dumbasses-to-lovers” and I never stopped adoring it. It’s a heist fic, of sorts, it’s a modern AU, there’s flirting, it’s got everything. The hilarity of the situations that each couple find themselves in is an actual delight. There’s a care here that renders these characters so very true and real to what you read - they feel like people I’d be friends with. This fic is fun and I savored it over multiple days as a treat to myself for hitting my word goals with my Big Bang. This does a great job of showing a different type of mission the team might take and I just adore it. That there are things out there that can threaten the characters in meaningful ways

Quynh is scary and barely features, but she’s still hella scary the way she should be

A Booker reconciliation with the group that feels very real and not like he was let off the hook

Mod Notes: Both mods discussed this fic at length during our review! The story focuses on Booker and his relationship with the team; specifically his and Joe’s friendship, and on Booker’s redemption. Neither of us typically seek out fic where Quynh seeks revenge on the Old Guard, but this fic felt like it explored the impact such a role would have on other others. As the submitter noted: Quynh is a background character of this fic and the antagonist! As such, reader discretion is advised.

It’s peaceful and quiet, and shows the love between Joe and Nicky in a completely unique way.  I can’t even start to describe it properly, other then recommend absolutely everyone in the fandom reads it.

What I loved: Okay, you know when you’re in a Mood and you just listen to sad music and watch sad things because you need to just Be Sad For A While? That was me the other night. I needed a good wallow, so I found some fics that made me sad but made me feel better at the same time. This fic is poignant and lovely. It shows the changes that Nile goes through over her long, long life, but it also shows all the ways she stays the same. This is such a great take on Nile and Nile’s future and I really loved it. It feels very introspective, as it should, and I really was impressed by just how immersive it is.

Synopsis: this story begins directly after their first meeting/first deaths and is a slow burn up to consummating their love for one another. Backstories are fleshed out, religious themes are touched on, and there is a villain, Andy and Quynh do show up.

Note: as it is now, it could be a completed work. I haven’t decided yet if it ends where it is, or if I will add an epilogue, or if I will continue it with more episodes from their lives through the years. This is partly what has stopped me from sharing it here.

Just submitting one of my own and one that I loved. This one is mine.

Title: the forest begins with a tree by loyaulte_me_lie (also on tumblr @if-fortunate). 

Summary: Sometimes being immortal is about fighting. Sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes it’s about stories and homes and justice and closure. There are, after all, many different ways to live forever.

Warnings: (non-explicit) violence, mentions of (but no depictions of) slavery, drowning, grief.

Pairing/Character: It’s Joe/Nicky and Andy/Quynh, but it’s a general character study of each person in turn.

Nile has had it. She’s tired and she’s telegraphing her moves and she’s done caring. There is nothing that matters except beating her. She crowds up to Andy and swings for her face; Andy leans out of range. Nile puts everything she’s got into the backstroke, and Andy raises her stick to block with her hands set wide. It snaps in half. That doesn't count as a point, but damn if it doesn’t feel great anyway. Andy steps back, staring at the two halves. Nile puts the tip of her stick under Andy’s chin. That’s a point. There’s something new and electric in Andy’s eyes. She nods, as if to the beat of a song Nile can’t hear, and tosses the broken pieces away.

What I Loved:

Full disclosure - I love any and all AUs and especially Pacific Rim fusions. I love the way that the history of both Pacific Rim and of The Old Guard is woven into this fic. It’s a rich and wonderful bit of world-building, and - who doesn’t want to see Nile in a Jaeger?

After the lab, they go back to Malta. Creator chose not to use any archive warnings. It’s Nicky and Joe, about 15,000 words, and it is rated mature. I love Godspeed because it’s warm, I think. It’s comforting, and it’s soft, and it’s quiet. I thought that Nicky and Joe deserved some peace, and so I hope the story communicates that peace. - pastandpresent
