Mini-review:

Tbh, I didn't like this as much as I expected. It started out fun and everything, but I think it ran out of steam with each episode. The last few episodes were particularly mediocre, with some of the characters suddenly acting like completely different people. It just made no sense to me. Also, I didn't like how they handled the whole "idol in a relationship" thing. It made me feel like the show was saying idols belong to their fans (and the group) and shouldn't even think of having lives, as if they aren't humans like everybody else. I don't know, it gave me a weird, upsetting feeling. On top of that, while I really liked the characters for the most part, the acting was uneven as hell, and sometimes I didn't even know what the female lead's expressions were supossed to mean. Oh, but one thing I did love is the effort the writer made to include queer characters in a way that felt super-positive. I hope other j-drama writers take notes, in this regard. So, overall, it's not a particularly good drama, and I would only recommend it if you're a big fan of any of the actors.

Is watchmaker clockmaker anything to do with that "Watchmaker of Filigree Street" book? and can we see a snippet regardless? :D

It is a Downton Abbey Watchmaker of Filigree Street AU! I came up with a plot that I really, really liked and then unfortunately as I started writing I was like "hm. not sure how to make this work, structurally."

[SPOILERS FOR THE WATCHMAKER OF FILIGREE STREET]

So the premise of the book is that the main character, Thaniel, a Victorian telegraph operator, comes home one night to find a pocket watch on his bed, and a few weeks later, the watch sets off an alarm. He goes outside to try and turn off the incredibly annoying alarm, and is thus saved from a bomb attack. He goes to meet the watchmaker, Keito Mori, and eventually learns that Mori is psychic; he "remembers" the future, with more probable futures being stronger and less probable ones being fainter, and when a future is disproved, he forgets it.

He left the watch for Thaniel deliberately, because he knew that the bomb would go off, and because he's had visions of their life together and knows that Thaniel would be the best romantic partner for him. He literally structures ~ten years of his life around meeting Thaniel at the right moment, when they have the best chance of happiness. There's a lot of "if a butterly flaps its wings"-type scenarios in the book; Mori previously worked for the Japanese government, and did things like planting a certain type of grass in a certain part of a lawn, because if the grass is there, then in six month's an assassin's horse will standing in that particular spot eating that grass, and when the branch of a nearby tree falls, it will kill the assassin when he tries to mount his horse.

IT'S SUCH A NEAT IDEA.

but also like, he's not perfect, because people can act irrationally or surprise themselves or waver between different possibilities, and if they do that, his vision is less accurate--if someone flips a coin to determine what they're going to do, he's absolutely useless.

my idea for a Downton AU was Chris Webster, psychic, does little things that shape Thomas's life over the course of several years, waiting for that Moment when they should meet. it culminates in leaving him a pocket watch that gets them out of Turton's in time, but he's thwarted by Thomas's crisis of conscience that leads him to insist they go back and warn the others when he realizes the police are nearby. Bittersweet ending wherein Thomas ends up with Richard and Chris decides to let them be happy, even if it means he'll forget what would have been many happy years for him and Thomas together.

this would have been the opening:

If Thomas Barrow is still in France on November 13, 1916, two bullets will strike him in the upper thigh and lower back, causing him to fall in the middle of no man’s land and slowly bleed out over the course of three-quarters of an hour until he succumbs to shock. But if Staff Sergeant Jonathan Banks spots two forgotten cans of condensed milk trampled into the mud by the mess hall in the first week of November, he will trade the second to Thomas for fewer cigarettes than usual--a small enough amount that even Thomas, inveterate smoker that he is, will happily part with them. If Private Freddie Frank is playing the accordion on the night of November 12, then Lieutenant Matthew Crawley will turn right as he weaves through the trenches, and he will come across Thomas, who will use the condensed milk as an excuse to talk to Crawley and form a plan to return home from the front.

If he settles on the northwestern end of the line, a nervous young German soldier will forget to account for the recoil of his rifle, and the bullet will miss Thomas, but the crack of the shot will attract British soldiers who scold Thomas for his carelessness but remark on how lucky he is to have missed when he was the only thing worth hitting. They will wince when they recall this on the night of November 13th, when he is dead. If there is a large contingent of soldiers gossiping in the northwestern quadrant, Thomas will settle on the southeastern end, an expert marksman will shoot through his hand, limiting the grip of his pinky and ring fingers and causing arthritic pains beginning in 1939. But he will be sent home, and he will live. Assuming SSgt. Banks finds two cans of condensed milk in the mud, rather than one.

In early October, Corporal Chris Webster suggests to Pvt. Frank that he ought to play his accordion on Sunday nights, to give them all a bit of cheering up even if the war doesn’t recognise the Lord’s Day. In early November, he steals a can of condensed milk from the officer’s mess, and a day later places it in the mud beside its fellow. On November 12, he rouses some of his friends and squadmates and settles around the northwest end of the trench, claiming that it’s drier even though there is, objectively, nothing to recommend it any more than any other spot in this godforsaken place. He is boisterous at first, but as the minutes pass he goes quiet. He takes out his pocket watch, more for the comfort of it than because he needs it to tell time.

He flinches a second before the shot rings out.
