Mini-review:

Damn, this is one masterful piece of television. It's outstanding in pretty much every regard (save for one, but I'll get to that later). From the very first episode, you can just tell the show's cast and crew poured all their passion into making this. The sets and costumes are amazingly detailed, and the writing is nothing short of spellbending; it's pretty much impossible to pry your eyes away from the screen. And the acting... just WOW. This is one superb ensemble. Everyone is so f**king good that I can't even pick an MVP. As for the one thing I didn't like, that would be the cinematography. This show falls prey to the Hollywood trend of making some scenes so dark that you can't see anything. But still, everything else is absolutely incredible, so I can forgive them for the darkness. Anyway, if you haven't started Shōgun already, you really should do it as soon as possible. It's a true must-watch.

Dune: Part Two (2024, USA)

Director: Denis Villeneuve

Writers: Denis Villeneuve & Jon Spaihts (based on the novel by Frank Herbert)

Mini-review:

I don't know if I've said this before on here, but Denis Villeneuve is arguably the greatest science-fiction filmmaker of his generation. He had already proven it before, but Dune: Part Two is yet another sublime reminder. For starters, the cinematography is stunning. And I love to see there are still some people in Hollywood who know how to light the hell out of a movie. The writing is just as superb; there's not a single boring moment, even though the film is almost three hours long. The whole cast is as good as they were in the first one, or even better. In particular, Rebecca Ferguson's performance is chilling in the best of ways, and Timothée Chalamet's work in the final act is quite possibly the best acting he's ever done. In short, this movie more than lived up to my expectations, and I'm really excited to see what they will do next with this franchise.

Mini-review:

The Greatest Hits presents a very interesting idea, approaching grief through the lens of music and time travel. Unfortunately, it kind of fails to live up to that potential. I don't know, I feel like the script and the characters are just too bland to really make this work. It's certainly watchable, cause it's pretty short and Lucy Boynton has great chemistry with her two co-stars. But still, I don't think this movie offers anything particularly impressive or engaging, besides a good cast and a solid concept.

her explaining to darren that she’s just having a hard time adjusting and darren immediately saying she’s going to have to get used to change was a moment i related to more than anything.

she wasn’t saying it to imply she’s unhappy or upset or anything like that but as a way of getting across that she’s struggling and needs them to be patient with her as she adjusts because, at the end of the day, people with audhd know that we have to conform to a certain expectation most times, if not all, but it takes us a lot longer than most but it doesn’t mean we don’t want to every time, just that we’re having a hard time and trying to communicate that clearly with people without them immediately making assumptions is difficult.

Something I haven’t seen people talk about (surprising since I have so many Australian mutuals) is how important it is that Heartbreak High has multiple First Nations characters. We hear so much about how FNAus take up 1% of the Australian population and that statistic is so often used against FNAus and I love that Heartbreak High chose to include more than one important FNAus character.

Also, the fact that they have such distinct personalities and interests. It is so important to me that these guys are main characters. It is so important to me that Malakai is sweet and funny. It is so important to me that Missy is sassy and strong. It is so important to me that Zoe is temperamental and smart. It is so important to me that their race is acknowledged and integral but that they still get distinct story elements.

Malakai, Missy and Zoe are so important to me.

Mini-review:

Heartbreak High is finally back! Look, I'm not gonna say this season was perfect; it was less focused than the first one, a bit more all over the place. I feel like some of its messages ended up muddled because of they way they're handled, and some storylines just don't get the time and space they deserve. BUT, all this messiness and feelings and juicy drama are just so f**king fun to watch. It definitely helps that the show boasts such an incredibly diverse cast of characters, all of them played by superbly talented and charismatic performers. I just love them, even when their decisions and choices get a tad too frustrating. So yeah, while this season might not have been as brilliant as the first, I enjoyed every single second of it and I will be thoroughly crushed if we don't get to see more of these characters.
