Is it just my imagination, or is there something off with this bird?
Meet the Eurasian dotterel (Charadrius morinellus) whose name is actually quite lovely in English, too, but which has a fun Finnish name keräkurmitsa. I have no idea, where the name originates from, but do not confuse it with kesäkurpitsa (= zucchini).
(I f’d up a bit and used a marker that wasn’t water proofed as I thought... So it is messy.)

Bird of the Day #2 - Dotterel
Tumblr media
Today's bird of the day is the Dotterel, specifically the Eurasian Dotterel!
Dotterel (Charadrius morinellus)
The Dotterel is an interesting bird in that the females are brighter in colour than the males. In nature, typically the females are more drab, due to the fact that they usually incubate the eggs and take care of the young, and therefore need camouflage to avoid predators. However, in this bird, not only are the females brighter, but they take the lead in courtship, and leave incubation and care of the young to the males. Once the eggs are laid, she takes no further interest and may even find another mate - how rude.
Should danger threaten the nest, the male Dotterel has a smart tactic for distracting the predator. He will run along the ground crouching, fly at the intruder aggressively, and then flop back onto the ground, feigning a broken wing. This takes attention away from the nest and, hopefully, allows the chick(s) to escape.

Dotterels mainly feed on insects but also occasionally eat snails, earthworms and spiders. When they migrate in spring, they are often seen in groups called "trips" at traditional stopping places. They are known to be surprisingly tame, and the scientific name morinellus means "little fool". A region in south Cambridgeshire apparently has a "Dotterel day" in the second week of May, inspired by when the birds would stop for rest whilst migrating.
See you next time!
