what should I be doing: working
what am I actually doing: brainstorming Mors' backstory.
specifically, his three very fucked up marriages.

Wanna hear a crazy idea I had for a BitW au?
A version where Regis is completely right about Mors having a bastard and Completely Wrong about who that bastard is! It's not his fault, really, Nyx is just so much in-your-face that most people focus on him.
Meanwhile, Crowe No Clan Name is quietly vibing in the background and making another overpowered fireball spell to throw at Nifs. She always was good at Elemancy, barely needed any training at all!
(I'm not saying that Mors learned about a weird creepy possibly-immortal witch living in backwoods of Galahd and decided to find out if she knows anything about the Accursed. . . but what if?)
Now that is an idea
In that verse Crowe would actually look very much like her paternal grandfather, which is why she doesn't look like a classic Lucis Caelum. (Mors's mother would have been the reigning King of Lucis, while his father would have married into the family.)
Mors would definitely want to meet the Whise One. And then make a deal with her. That man would treat this as something purely practical, which the Wise One might actually appreciate.
Oh, oh!
Let's combine that with the Secret Desks AU!
Where Regis eventually finds a birth certificate for a sister. The name of the mother is listed as Kraja Horwalt. And by this point Regis has already met Kraja.
By Bahamut, his sister is a semi-goddess. Holy shit, he has a sister. His father slept with a goddess, Gods damn it!

This is gonna be pretty much stream of consciousness because I Have An Idea But Words Are Hard. Anyway.
In Spark verse, if Ramuh is aware that the prophecy was irreversibly derailed because Ifrit happened, he might be willing to intervene more directly in the world. Not by showing up in his Astral form, oh no. But, more subtle stuff could be happening. (Let it be know that Astrals have a different definition of "subtle" than humans.)
Like say. Niflheim's initial invasion, the one right after the Wall got pulled in, getting completely wrecked by some storms.
Everyone thinks that it's just hurricane season starting early but still. The emperor can't just order another invasion right away, because they just lost a huge amount of resources with literally nothing to show for it. In fact, if Besithia's research was sufficiently derailed by Ardyn and Ifrit's escape, those were human soldiers and not MTs who died in the invasion. So the support for war is also low.
Anyway, this is where your post about Lucis-Galahd fealty comes in. Because this Galahd still has access to their copies of the treaty. And they are not above bringing out diplomatic guns to get some help from the Mainland. They don't think Mors will actually send soldiers but sending some financial and medical aid would be nice.
Mors' answer is Very Much Not Diplomatic.
In fact, it's pretty much just saying "you are on your own" but with fancy wording.
The Chiefs all look at each other, look at the treaty and shrug because it that's how Mors wants to do it then ok. Hard way it is. They send another message, this time stating that they consider Mors to be breaking the terms of the treaty that assured Galahd's conditional fealty to the King. (Copies of this message might be send to various regional governors of Lucis. And to Tenebrae. And to Altissia.)
And then they put stop to all export of Galahdian goods to Lucis. Because if we are not part of the kingdom anymore then all those trade agreements are not valid anymore, you know how it is, they say to all traders who complain. This all will have to be negotiated again.
Meanwhile nobles and commoners alike are side-eyeing Mors, because they might not care about some island savages but the price of chocolate just increased 10 times. And prices of spices, and of silk, and of gemstones, and of exotic hardwoods and...
(Basically Mors gets screwed over but Eos' equivalent of brexit)
Not sure if this is the direction I'll take this fic in, but I am always entertained by Mors getting screwed over by his own poor decisions. Now, if only more of his poor decisions affected him instead of everyone else that would be fantastic.

went on a bender again and now I'm going to subject you all to it.
So this is a slide from Episode Ardyn showing the area that the New Wall covered before King Mors scaled it back, but it's a little unclear exactly how much of the mainland was covered.
Tumblr media
Prior to the DLC's release, canon said that only the area of Cavaugh, the island that Insomnia rests on, was covered by the New Wall and King Mors scaled it back to Insomnia's ramparts. (Granted, this is at odds with how you can find an Almanac in the Keycatrich ruins saying that it was protected by the Wall) Now, based on the image above, and following the exact line of how big we're shown, the New Wall covered the entirety of Leide, most of Galahd to the north, and half of Duscae, as shown by the black line.
Tumblr media
Notably, the settlements for Lestallum, Galdin Quay, and Angelgard aren't included, as well as it leaves out a decent portion of the bigger island of Galahd. So I propose the white line, which encompasses all of those settlements, as well as the Meldacio hunter's HQ and most of Duscae.
It's entirely possible that the New Wall encompassed the entire continent, but that feels a little farfetched, especially because of how much ocean it would cover. (From what we know the Wall only seems to expand in circular directions.) Anyways, due to the Great War 30 years ago, King Mors pulled back the Wall a significant amount, all the way to the city's Ramparts, shown in red.
Tumblr media
Mors died roughly four years after this event, and his passing is noted as "untimely". His actual age isn't known, but we can assume he was in decent health before the Wall was scaled back. It's extremely likely that complications with scaling back the Wall led to his death.
Now, we know that it's canon that the fueling of the New Wall drains the life force out of the reigning monarch, with 50 year old Regis' body failing him and looking to be somewhere in his mid 70s. However, given how this Wall was maintained for 150 years, and likely put up by the 108th King, Optimus Lucis Caelum, otherwise known as The Wise, each monarch would've had it for about 25 years or so.
Based on Episode Ardyn, Insomnia has multiple pylons inside the city that enhance the magic of the Crystal and strengthen the Wall, forged out of Adamantite. You only need to destroy 3 to progress the story, but there's 7 total in a small section of city surrounding the Citadel. Due to the difficulty of their construction, and how many were destroyed, it's likely that Regis' health declined much quicker than it should've, despite managing to rule for about 25 years under the Wall. Presumably, Mors intended to let each monarch live longer under the strain of only protecting a much smaller area, but Ardyn made sure that didn't happen.
I'm going positing that the greater continent and region of Galahd also had these pylons, which is what allowed the Wall to be held for 150 years. Like, it's the only way it makes sense, considering the size that's covered. Furthermore, the invasion of Niflheim in the War of 30 years ago was likely to destroy multiple pylons that were erected on the continent, thus forcing Mors to withdraw the Wall (rather than the assumed "mors was a lil bitch" route). Lucis had already set itself up in a siege position, and had one major city, Keycatrich, that was under the protection of the Wall, as well as outer territories like Galahd. If the Wall was maintained for over 120 years with no real issues (that we know of), what else could've forced Mors to scale back the New Wall to less than half it's original size?
Anyways I don't really have a fucking point to all of this nonsense, except for trying to figure out more of the scant backstory that XV has via very loose lore and vague ideas that only sort of connect. Also a lot of wiki hopping and tracking down sources. Do with this what you will.

itd be really funny if i included the ffxiv crossover into ffxv while deidre was there. Y'jimei thinks deidre is just some other adventurer who got stuck in this world because so few people know the Warrior of Light's name off the top of their heads, and even fewer people could pick her out of a crowd.
But then Garuda gets summoned. And this random adventurer from her world gets them out of tempering range and goes HAM And Oh Gods That's The Warrior of Light And this might be how the bros find out the weirdo who helped and befriended Noct isn't just some girl she is THE LEGENDARY HERO OF HER REALM and didn't tell them.

*grins* AtB reveal AU where the Crystal makes a grandiose magical announcement whenever a Lucis Caelum is born. (Mors is seriously considering making Regis retake sex ed as the announcement comes again - and again - and again - in a matter of months. Regis is just wishing that the Crystal mentioned things like names or locations, not ‘Hail the birth of the son/daughter of the Stone! Hail!’)
More stares at Regis.
Regis is would normally meet his fathers gaze head on but-
Well.
Apparently Regis has eight children he that he lost track of.
“If this happens one more time,” Mors says with an expression on his face that would lead to Regis getting sent to his room when he was younger, “I’ll make sure you never step foot out of Insomnia again.”
-
Katrina sees the headlines announcing the birth of one of Regis’ children.
Then she sees those headlines again and again and as she carries Ace around her and Carly’s home as he babbles she wonders if she should head to Insomnia and tell Regis.
Ace makes a low whining noise in the back of his throat when he realizes his mother isn’t paying attention to him and Katrina laughs and showers him in kisses until he bursts into giggles again.
There are too many variables, Katrina decides, she’ll wait before introducing Ace to his family.
-
Ardor is found first, they find a scrawny child scavenging for food in the streets of Lestallum. They only catch him because he runs into another boy - slightly older - who sees Ardor throwing fireballs at the Crownsguard and joins in.
Cor stares at the report. He then stares at the red eyed child in front of him who is accompanied by a woman who looks like she would be more at home in a lab than in Cor’s office. She has a tight grip on her child and hovers close enough to Ardor to grab him and run if anything happens.
Her bright eyes stare at Cor and show no fear. She seems perfectly willing to fight Cor if the situation calls for it.
Cor wonders why he - at 19 years old - was put in charge of this.
-
Jules is found next. She had thrown a grown man into a wall with magic when said man attempted to harm her mother. Cor and Regis watch as Ardor takes one look at her and her mother and promptly decides that he’ll die for her.
Thanatos must be of the same opinion as he begins to bring her books.
-
Bard isn’t found so much as brought to Insomnia by her mother after Bard had decided to test out fire breathing.
“I figured,” her mother says in a voice that has seduced Regis in the past, “That if anyone can help her it’s the one who she inherited the magic from.”
Regis thinks of the part of the Citadel dedicated to his children and their mothers and thinks he must have to expand it.
-
Mercury shows up with an Imperial noblewoman who is currently seeking sanctuary.
“May I ask why the Empire has an arrest warrant out for you?”
“Well,” the blonde noblewoman says with a slight grin, “They can’t put one out for a child can they?”
In that moment Mercury must decide that she’s had enough of not being near her mother because she phases through the door to the interrogation room and demands her mother make her popsicles.
“Oh,” the noblewoman says and her grin widens, “There’s that too.”
-
Persephone and her mother walk into the Citadel as if they own it.
Persephone has her father sit down for tea and Regis has never been intimidated by a ten year old until now.
“If you hurt my mother,” Persephone says in a tone that is too mature for her age, “The Astrals themselves won’t be able to hide you from me.”
“Does your mother know you are threatening me?”
“She tried to discourage it.”
Regis feels a bit faint and wonders if Noctis will grow up to be like the rest of his siblings.
“I see.”
-
Jupiter and Ace arrive together having barely reached adulthood. They don’t exactly want to ask Regis to stop being a fucking tool and to ease restrictions on Galahdians seeking refuge but-
Well, listen, sometimes you have to do something uncomfortable to make change. They even made an appointment, they have proof of the appointment.
If only this fucking gate guard would believe them when they say they have an appointment.
Jupiter, because she has never bothered to pay attention to the lessons their uncle taught them in politics and diplomacy, decides that force is the right choice.
“If you don’t let us through,” Jupiter says, “I’m going to freeze you in place, and then I’m going to let my brother decide whether or not to electrocute you.”
“Please don’t tempt me,” Ace mutters under his breath.
“Threats? As if I can’t have you arrested for threatening a standing member of the military see if the Astrals will take pity on you-“
“Oh,” Jupiter says as she eyes the rapidly darkening skies, “I think they might.”
The formerly sunny day turns dark, thunderheads gathering directly above the Citadel. Jupiter watches as the guard does a double take when he realizes Ace’s eyes are glowing a bright gold-
“Shit,” the guard curses and scrambles away from them. The siblings watch amusedly as he frantically reaches for his com.
Rapid footsteps reach their ears and both Ace and Jupiter turn toward the sound. Princess Persephone looks like she just came from a sparring practice dressed in sweatpants and a tank top with her hands wrapped.
“I would prefer it, dear brother, if you didn’t summon Ramuh to wreak havoc on the city this fine morning.” Persephone speaks as if she knows them and Ace and Jupiter exchange a look.
The gold fades from Ace’s eyes and the weather clears.
“I wasn’t going to summon him,” Ace protests, “I was persuading the guard here to let us in for our appointment.”
Persephone raises a brow.
Ace meets her stare head on.
Jupiter cackles.
“He doesn’t have enough energy to summon Ramuh anyway,” Jupiter says, “Not after, well, you know.”
Persephone takes stock of her siblings appearances. They both look like they’ve been on the move for weeks without rest and the beads in their hair are all too telling about where they are from.
“We heard, I would extend my condolences but I expect they mean nothing.” Persephone turns toward the guard. Her eyes are ice as she looks at him. “I will be taking my siblings in to meet with our father. We will deal with you later.”

The fire burned low. With dinner long since finished and the glow of the campsite’s protective barrier casting a soft blue over them, Gladio didn’t bother to feed any more wood into the flames. There was no need - the night was warm and balmy. Noct and Prompto were huddled into each other across from him, shoulders pressed together as they scrolled through something on Noct’s phone. The little screen lit their faces with a light that felt harsh compared to that of the wards. Ignis was finishing up what little cleanup their dinner required. It was peaceful and familiar. Until Gladio broke the silence. “Too bad we had to stop here…”

Noctis, I love you, but my job goes beyond our companionship or relationship! At the end of the day, you knew I would have to not only be your partner, but your advisor still!” Ignis threw back, gritting his teeth as he, too, fought against the tears that burned his eyes. “Can’t you just be my boyfriend for two minutes without being my advisor at the same time? Are you even capable of that?! Six, sometimes I wish those stories my dad read us as kids were real and the fae could just take you away and bring someone else!” Ignis, whose mouth was open to throw back a retort, shut quickly as his jaw set tight. There were wet spots on his glasses to go with the tear tracks that now shone on his face. “Sometimes I wish the same thing, if only to see you happier.”

Out of all the parents that Crowe can claim, Mors is somehow the best one. Which says everything about how bad the other two were.
Aerugo Altius is definitely a piece of shit.
For me personally Kraja is a lot more ambiguous because I don't see her as having human morals. She was born human, and technically still is human, but she bound herself - magic and soul - to the land of Galahd. That changes people. She's part of the Spirits, now. They protect Galahd, human inhabitants included, but that doesn't mean they follow human morality.
Kraja knows Galahd will need someone with a connection to the Lucis Caelums. So she makes sure Galahd has someone with a connection to them.
And that connection is Crowe.
But the connection needs to be more Galahkari then Lucian, so Mors cannot take her. And she needs to be human, so Kraja herself cannot raise her beyond a certain point.
Enter Aerugo who wants to strike a deal.
It's unfair and hurtful. It's tragic.
But I agree with you that Mors would definitely be the best parent out of all three. Which is just wild. That man is as emotuinally unavailable as they come, but he would make sure his children have everything else. Which is a step up, yes, but still a very low bar.

What is Besithia doing in Spark!Ardyn au? Considering his pet projects got thoroughly torched by an annoyed Astral, along with his lab.
Besithia doesn’t strike me as the type to let an Astral throwing a hissy fit get in the way of his goals. Well, not for long, anyways.
Haven’t played through Episode Ardyn yet and it’s been awhile since I watched a walkthrough, but iirc Besithia books it either when the Royal Guard shows up to have a go at killing Ardyn, or when Ifrit wakes up pissed as fuck. Either way, Besithia is too busy running to avoid getting flambéd to see that Ardyn did not get immolated with the rest of the lab.
So with his lab turned to ash and charred and melted scrap - and assuming Ardyn’s ashes are in there as well - Besithia is back to not square one, but like, square two with his daemon experiments. Only now there’s the issue of Ifrit being awake, and that Astral isn’t known for being fond of humans.
And Besithia doubts he’s on the Astral’s Winter Solstice card list.
First Besithia has to fess up to the Emperor about his colossal fuck up - lost an expensive lab, lost the experiments he’d invested so much money in, and there’s now a pissed off Astral on the loose - and hope Iedolas doesn’t decide to cut his losses where Besithia is concerned. Besithia is in luck. Iedolas isn’t pleased with Besithia, but the Emperor gives Besithia a chance to mitigate his mistake by coming up with a way to counter an Astral.
So begin Besithia’s experiments into countering divine magic. With the added difficulty of finding a source of divine magic to test his results on.
Niflheim can already clone food, surely humans can’t be that much more difficult? Ardyn’s genetic samples all burned up in his lab, so Besithia starts with his own dna to perfect the process.
Once he gets that - the successful subjects are placed under observation to monitor development even as they are placed in various homes - Besithia moves on to acquiring a suitable genetic sample from either the line of the Oracles or Lucis Caelums.
Depending how long it takes Besithia to reach this stage, his options are Sylva’s Fleuret parent, Sylva herself, baby Ravus, Mors, or Regis. At which point Besithia starts trying to clone subjects in the hope of them inheriting magic so he can test countering divine magic on them. Instead of having to test it on a fully aware Oracle or a trial by fire on an angry Astral.
Only, it turns out magic doesn’t really play well with cloning attempts so Besithia’s gonna be at this for awhile.

thinking about kingsglaive and the way we portray mors in fanon. thinking about the line of lucis caelum and recessive genes. thinking of the first and only meeting between regis and ardyn.
mors is often portrayed as cynical and a little loose in the head. he was a king at the end of his rope, pulling the wall back when the rings strain grew stronger than he could handle.
mors died when regis was in his 20s, it was said to be sudden. it's theorized that most lucis caelum's don't make it to their 50s.
thinking about recessive genes and regis' reaction to when ardyn entered the throne room. the hitch in his breath, the subtle flinch, the surprise in his eyes.
i don't think it was solely based on the fact that it was the chancellor of nifleheim that was the envoy.
what if mors bore a resemblance to ardyn, just enough to be near identical. maybe his hair was a darker shade of red, his cheek bones not as sharp, but the eyes, oh the eyes match perfectly.
what if when ardyn izunia, chancellor and envoy from niflheim, stepped into the throne room, it wasn't him regis saw but rather the ghost of his father.
edit: a small thing i wrote

So, do you remember that ask with baby Prompto being adopted by Regis because a DNA test showed he's somehow related to the LCs? An off-shot of Nyx Regisson au, I think.
Anyway, how much chaos would it cause if Prompto actually used his own magic?
not that much, honestly
like okay, if the general public found out that prompto, as a somewhat distant blood relation, had his own magic there'd definitely be some chaos cos they generally think that magic is half the bloodline and half the blessing of the draconian and so is limited to the mainline of the lc
but actual lucis caelums know that mostly it's the blood and the proxmity to the crystal. if someone distantly related has the right markers in their blood and the dormant magic of the bloodline and spends enough time in the citadel, they can usually do some magic eventually even if not to the same strength of those born with active magic
so it's more the strength of prom's magic that has regis pausing. cos that suggests more than the crystal sparking dormant magic, that says he's inherited it from someone who could use their own. which means prompto's dead parent had magic
which probably means he's more closely related to regis than they'd thought
course it still doesn't change much cos blood tests really aren't that specific so like. they just think he's regis' cousin by a bastard of mors or smth
(instead of yknow, regis' grandson)
