I think the most pertinent, fundamental question to ask at this point is: How canon do we want to make the 1981 musical Cats by Andrew Lloyd Webber to Better Bones? Since you've done so fantastically well at fleshing out alternate but no-less-viable systems of belief, that door has been left wiiiide open. Stripped of the zany dance numbers and stage actors in copious makeup, you can't deny that the underlying Jellicle cat religion / Heavyside Layer wouldn't be out of place. Don't lie to us. Don't you dare.

We don't know when the musical takes place, but as for where, the Jellicle Cats and their religion are centralized in a junkyard somewhere in London. Depending on how far their area of influence extends, there could be a few cats in a sect or two of BloodClan who practice the faith of a land to the south, or otherwise believe in the existence of the Heavyside Layer. Or say, the junkyard is done away with in the late 90's and a diaspora of Jellicle Cats spreads across the land. Their descendants hope one day to make the pilgrimage for one last ball, and are invariably seen as Rather Offputting by everyone. (In-story it'd all amount to rare sequiturs from a nameless extra or two which increase in probability the further one heads south.)

If you're going to put the Jellicles in the BB Universe, you fucking BETTER be taking inspiration from the cancelled 1997 Steven Spielberg animated musical adaptation which places the cats in postwar London sometime circa 1945 and implied that the cats had heavily cultural emphasis on song, dance, and performance

Which btw would place Grizabella's Jellicle Ball pretty firmly in the Code Era of my adaptation (built around the canonical tidbit that Turtle Tail was hit by a Ford Model T meaning the Dawn Era was pre-war).

It would be before the main Warrior cast is born (Except Holly due to infamous Time Travel Shenanigans)-- but Jellicles, after all, were there when the Sphinx was built, so it's safe to assume they'd still be around in the future as a cultural group.

Really the biggest barrier is that they live in bloodbourne London. Too far southeast to communicate with Clan cats or even BloodClan, who are northwest. Park Cats are from further south, but no further south than Gloucestershire at most.

So, serious answer, they can absolutely be canon in this universe, or at the very least they can be slotted in easily. I built a brand new religion system exactly to accommodate the existence of multiple cultural groups and honor the afterlives of each.

In fact, Jellicles fit perfectly into it.

They have a heaven (Heavyside Layer) but no hell, exactly the way that a "vanilla" type religion can form on its own. Really there's just one question-- what's their leader power?

These both seem like versions of the same power, really. It makes sense, too, that culturally they would value agility to the point of veneration. It ties into dancing, avoiding cars and dogs, stealing things.

In any case though-- you begin to lose these sorts of abilities the further you go from a group, without some kind of token. The Sisters are the example I've written so far; Tree needs some kind of item in order to see ghosts when he's not near the rest of the Sisters. The Jellicles are also a pretty proud group, I can't see them making these "tokens" for any old wanderer.

So maybe there's just a few of them, and Macavity has one stolen?

WASSERMAN’S HOLLY ROWLAND ON THE RISE OF LOUIS TOMLINSON

"When I say I've booked a 39-date arena tour for Louis, people can't believe it and they can't believe his ticket sales," says Tomlinson's agent

Wasserman Music agent Holly Rowland has spoken to IQ about Louis Tomlinson’s 2023 European arena tour.

The former One Direction star is to embark on a 39-date outing across 28 countries next year, having recently completed a pandemic-delayed tour that spanned 57 dates in Europe, South America, Asia and Australia.

“Louis wanted to go everywhere,” says Rowland, who represents Tomlinson with Wassmerman’s Alex Hardee.

“One Direction never really toured Europe extensively – they did the major cities and the stadiums – but they never went to Eastern Europe for example. During their solo careers, Harry Styles has never done it and Niall Horan has never done it.”

Rowland believes that unlike Styles and Horan, who have also carved out solo careers since the best-selling boyband disbanded in 2016, Tomlinson’s worth is often underestimated.

“When I say I’ve booked a 39-date arena tour for Louis, people can’t believe it,” Rowland tells IQ. “They don’t believe his sales or the fact he has his own festival.”

If Tomlinson was overlooked before, it all looks set to change now. Last Friday (18 November), the star beat Bruce Springsteen to score his first solo UK No. 1 album with ‘Faith In The Future’ via BMG. At the same time, ticket sales for his forthcoming tour are “really strong” despite going on sale a year in advance.

“It will sell out,” says Rowland. “London’s The O2 [cap. 21,000], for example, is on 90% and even markets which are typically late sellers, like Greece, are nearly sold out even though the concerts are still a year away.”

Rowland says it’s thanks to a symbiotic album-tour campaign that Tomlinson’s sales are strong on both the recorded and the live side.

“You wouldn’t typically go on sale with a tour so early but we needed to go out before the album so we could get the pre-orders,” she explains. “Synchronicity with recorded and live has sometimes been missed before but now, more than ever, it’s so important. An artist does well because their whole team is across everything and is communicating with each other.”

Rowland and Tomlinson’s team are particularly proud of the ticket prices for the tour, which start at £27.50 regionally.

“He’s a man of the people,” she says. “For example, he won’t do any golden circles or platinum or flexible ticketing or increased isle seating or paid meet-and-greets. That’s his philosophy.

“The issue nowadays is costs are going up so you have to cover your base but also keep it fair for the customer. The promoters crunched the numbers on their side and there was a lot of back and forth on the ticket price but obviously, the tour is spread across multiple dates so that helps. Plus it’s something Louis really wants to do.”

Promoters working on Tomlinson’s forthcoming tour include Live Nation (Slovenia, Hungary, Bulgaria), 8 Days a Week (Baltics), Pop Farm (Greece), Follow The Step (Poland), Charmenko (Romania), Fource Entertainment (Czech Republic) and SJM (UK).

The Faith In The Future 2023 outing is the follow-up to Tomlinson’s first world tour, which concluded in September, having been pushed back due to the pandemic.

Highlights from the tour include South America – “one of Louis’s biggest markets” – which saw the star sell 30,000 tickets in Brazil, 30,000 in Buenos Aires and 21,000 in Mexico.

Rowland also notes an open-air show in Milan, Italy, at the beginning of September, which saw 34,000 tickets fly off the shelf in 48 hours.

2022 also saw the evolution of Tomlinson’s own festival, Away From Home, which launched last year in Crystal Palace Park, London, and was free to attend.

This year the event moved to Malaga in Spain and featured The Vaccines, Sun Room, Stone and Hinds, all of whom performed alongside Tomlinson. This time around the event was ticked and Rowland says it sold 15,500 tickets in two days.

“I programmed it [alongside Louis] so it was quite fun to be on the other side of things, being the promoter and offering out supports to agents,” says Rowland.

Launching a festival was the natural progression for Tomlinson, who is known to hand-pick his own tour supports – many of whom go on to see great success, according to Rowland and Hardee.

“His fanbase is so loyal and they hang on every word he says,” says Rowland. “He’ll go onstage after the support acts and say ‘How amazing were they, go out and follow them,’ and that’s what his fans do because they really believe in him and trust him.”

Rowland notes that Tomlinson’s fanbase is surprisingly young – between 14–18 years old – which translates into strong merchandise sales, thanks to the parent pound.

“What’s crazy is that his fanbase is so young, they weren’t even around when One Direction were having their heyday. They must’ve found the band through siblings or something…” she notes.

When asked if it has been difficult to extricate Tomlinson from his previous work in One Direction, Rowland says: “He can’t hide from his past – One Direction were one of the biggest boybands of all time – but we need to respect his path and see him for the artist he wants to be and not who he was.

And as for comparisons to his former bandmates’ solo careers, she adds: “Harry is pop, Niall is more singer-songwriter and Louis is indie. That’s the music he loves and you can see that through the acts he requests to support him. It’s time now to shine the light on who he is.”

Culture Defines South Central: Geography limits that characterization, a puzzle explored.

The area is flanked to the north by downtown Los Angeles as Washington Boulevard marks the invisible limit between the two, and by Vernon Avenue to the south, the Harbor Freeway to the west and historic Central Avenue to the east. Tom’s Market, a brown-brick building with a green roof stands one-story high, steps away from the intersection of Florence and Normandie Avenues. The building is located at the epicenter of the infamous 1992 unrest caused by the verdict in the Rodney King trial. It sits within the imaginary border of cultural South Central, but it is outside of the 2.55 miles that define historic South Central geographically. 

Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw-Leimert neighborhoods are also located outside of that perimeter. The city council changed the name of South Central to South Los Angeles in 2003, according to a KCET report. The perception of South Los Angeles as a haven for something “less” crossed the ocean. The British press did not make the distinction between the historical and geographical South L.A. In an article published by the Daily Mail in Sept. 2016, titled “(Almost) Straight out of Compton,” reporter Ruth Styles wrote about the area where Meghan Markle’s mother lived. “Plagued by crime and riddled with street gangs, the troubled Los Angeles neighborhood that Doria Ragland, 60, calls home couldn’t be more different to London’s leafy Kensington.” 

Markle’s mother lived in the Crenshaw neighborhood of View Park, where houses list from $800,000 to $2 million. The homes are mainly mid century gems with oddly shaped swimming pools and sweeping views of the downtown L.A skyline. The majority of the homeowners there are Black. Race Trumps Location, Geography Crenshaw Boulevard stretches 23-miles long. Cars travel the boulevard from Mid-Wilshire near the affluent Hancock Park area to the north through Central Los Angeles. It passes the Crenshaw district that includes View Park and Windsor Hills ending in the affluent Rolling Hills area in Palos Verdes. 

Crenshaw is a boulevard crossing a cluster of neighborhoods, not a city. In other words, most anywhere there are African Americans east of the Interstate 405 is regarded as “South Los Angeles” culturally and often with a derogatory connotation. Compton, Inglewood and Long Beach all border cities with similar demographics and similar stories. Geographically, they are not South Central. Some people in these places live mundane, ordinary lives. Others have interesting and even extraordinary lives that have nothing to do with the popularized imagery of movies, music or even real life events like the 1992 unrest.

Travis Lacy is a writer and doctoral candidate of African American music and culture. “South Los Angeles is not unlike many other L.A. neighborhoods,” Lacy said. “There are multiple types of people … that hold all sorts of employment positions from simple retail positions to management, hospital staff, nurses.” South L.A. properties with mortgages account for 76 percent of homes. 

The median value of a home with a mortgage there is $467,350, according to Point2Homes.com, an Internet real estate site. Lacy says South Los Angeles is working class, and it is not so different from other L.A. neighborhoods. “It has its collection of well known people as well, Ray Charles, lived not too far from here, in the Baldwin Hills-View Park area,” he said. “Tina Turner and her husband [Ike Turner], Stevie Wonder had a house up there too … it burned in a fire.” “Culture Cures” is the title of the mural painted on the wall of a brick pre-World War II building that pays homage to the Black Panther party at 41st Street and Central Avenue in historic SouthCentral Los Angeles. 

SPRING 2022 Collegian Times 19 However, there is crime, and there are street gangs, illicit drugs and violence. African Americans are the image of “who” lives in South Central Los Angeles, but they make up a mere 10.1 percent of the population of the historic core South Central Los Angeles, according to the 2000 U.S. census. Latinos are at the top with 87.2 percent. South Central Los Angeles has never been “ghetto,” by definition. The “Black Beverly Hills” as it has been called in the past, Baldwin HillsCrenshaw District along with Leimert Park are the only areas in the city that are predominately African American. Windsor Hills, Baldwin Hills and Ladera Heights are the most affluent African American areas on the West Coast. 

However, African Americans’ place in South L.A. continues to disappear. James W. Johnson has been a resident of South Los Angeles for almost seven decades. He and his family migrated to South Los Angeles from a small town in Texas in 1955. “That’s the biggest problem the Black community is having right now, getting [their] parents’ leftovers, and selling them, ” Johnson said. “I had a buddy of mine, he sold his [grandma’s house], a duplex. He was living in one of ‘em rent-free for years. For years, but his grandmother passed away. He sold the house and moved to Moreno Valley.” History and Culture Live in South L.A. The Crenshaw District became home for many Japanese families after race-based housing covenants were ruled unconstitutional and A mid-century home sits atop a breezy quiet hill in the picturesque Windsor Hills-View Park neighborhood in South Los Angeles. 

In striking contrast to popular imagery, this South Los Angeles area is the largest most affluent African American neighborhood on the West Coast. unenforceable. Not illegal, just unenforceable. Pre-WWII South Central Los Angeles was diverse, very much like the farther eastern neighborhood of Boyle Heights. Blacks, Japanese, Italians, Mexicans, Chinese and Jews all lived together, as they were not allowed to live in the whites-only areas of the city. Lacy grew up in South Los Angeles and in the unincorporated area called Lennox, south of Inglewood near LAX. Lacy, his wife and baby daughter moved into their 1922 Spanish revival bungalow in South Los Angeles near the Los Angeles and Inglewood border in 2005. 

Their purchase is located one mile away from the epicenter of the 1992 Los Angeles uprising. He says his neighborhood is “pretty quiet” and most of his neighbors are elderly. “The neighborhood does not fit into what you might normally hear about in South Los Angeles, [as] far as drugs and violence or anything like that. It’s been pretty quiet,” Lacy said. “[The elder neighbors], they moved in here before the 1966 restrictive covenants were removed and have been here ever since.” South L.A. is home to more than 140 architecturally and historically important places, like the 80-year old Vision Theatre in Leimert Park. The Spanish style art deco movie palace was once operated by Fox West Coast Theaters, according to culturela.org. The Los Angeles Coliseum, site of the 1932 and 1984 Olympics, the Watts Towers—a group of 17 interconnected structures built by Italian immigrant Simon Rodia over a 30-year period, and the 1930s planned community of Baldwin Hills Village are all national historic landmarks. 

Christian Brake is a 16-year-old high school student studying software coding. He says people are surprised by the fact that emblematic institutions are located within the South Los Angeles area borders. “There is the Natural History Museum and really good universities like USC here,” he said as he swiveled in his gaming chair and commented on his neighbors. “They can be rough, I grew up with some of them, and some of them are nice. Some can be unsafe too.” The people of South Los Angeles are thought to be less than, and not worth caring about. It is emblematic of systemic marginalization. Politicians often run on platforms of being tough on crime, which usually means a heavy-handed approach where everyone is guilty and no one feels safe. Beneath the Mediterranean climate however, there is also abandonment of good neighborhood policies. There is a lack of ground level interest in the people and their needs by local policy makers. It is a disservice to just paint all of South Los Angeles and its inhabitants as bad people in a bad area. Bloods and Crips live in parts of these areas. So do anime nerds, doctoral candidates, teachers, students, celebrities, dentists and lawyers. There are families who struggle and families who are thriving. As Snoop Dogg says “you ain’t up on thangs” if you believe everyone in South Los Angeles is just someone to be avoided. They are not pillars of hopelessness, nor decay.

Description: "'No Ball Games' alludes to a liberation of childhood and children's exemption from life's rules and expectations. The children are in an area not zoned for fun and play, but do so in defiance, going so far as to toss the sign as if it were a toy. 'No Ball Games' was sprayed in the same year on a shop wall at the junction between Tottenham High Road and Philip Lane, North London, but has since been removed and sold by the Sincura group in 2013, at an estimated £500,000, with the profits going to help disadvantaged children. It was taken down by the group as part of their controversial Stealing Banksy project. Many argued the work's meaning would be lost by its removal, but also that a piece of the area's heritage would also be taken. Banksy condemned the group's removal of the work, saying in a statement: "The show has nothing to do with me and I think it's disgusting people are allowed to go display art on walls without getting permission." This piece first appeared on canvas in 2006 at Banksy's Barely Legal exhibition in Los Angeles. Barcode Leopard (2003, stencil)

Description: "Banksy's 'Barcode Leopard' originally appeared on the side of a house in Bristol on Pembroke Road before the stencil was mysteriously removed in August 2010. After four years, it unexpectedly resurfaced during a local school exhibition in Somerset. This minimalist image holds significant symbolism. The leopard depicted in the artwork is seen breaking free from its cage, which takes the form of a barcode. Carl Nwazota was born and grew up in the London suburb of Wembley to parents from Jamaica and Nigeria. For 26 years, he was a UK citizen with a British passport – until it was confiscated by the Home Office after he tried to renew it in 2000, he told CNN.

For the next 22 years, Nwazota lived in constant fear of being deported as his life began to unravel.

His business was closed because he was prevented from working by the Home Office, and he could not gain employment or social housing due to his lack of documents, he said. He was forced to live in temporary accommodation, with intermittent periods of homelessness. He watched the world pass him by from the fringes of society: sleeping in a tent under a shop window, or in an abandoned van in a supermarket car park. Often, he would go to bed hungry due to his benefits being stopped, he recalled – as “no fixed abode” became his new identity in the corridors of the job center.

Christmases and birthdays passed by for almost two decades until the Home Office acknowledged that Nwazota was a British citizen over a phone call in 2018, he said.

For the next four years, Nwazota says, he remained homeless while he struggled to regain his passport. Many of his documents were lost after he claims the council threw away his tent, and he could not receive response letters from the Home Office as he had no permanent address.

“I had been told I was a British citizen – but I was still waiting to get back my passport, waiting for an apology from the Home Office – all while living in a van. I’m not a weak guy but I had no hope. I tried to take my own life,” he said.

Nwazota has since recovered and received his passport from the Home Office in 2022. “The first thing I did when I got my passport back was get a job – and I’m proud to say, I work as a bin man (refuse collector). But even though I’m back in the real world – it’s too late for me. I’m 49 years old now. The Home Office has taken my life from me.”

Nwazota is one of thousands who found their lives derailed in what became to be known as the Windrush scandal, which saw the British Home Office deny residency rights and citizenship to many people who had been living in the UK legally for most, if not all, of their lives.

The victims were members and descendants of the so-called Windrush generation – mostly Caribbean migrants who moved to Britain in the post World War II-era in answer to a call for labor shortages, with the first arriving on the Empire Windrush 75 years ago Thursday. Citizens of former British colonies in South Asia and Africa also became entangled in the scandal.

Like Nwazota, many of their children had been born in Britain and have known no other home, yet also had their UK citizenship revoked.

Experts told CNN this was due to the UK government’s “hostile environment” policy – a government crackdown on immigration that misclassified the Windrush generation as illegal immigrants.

This has led to multiple generations suffering often devastating harm: job losses, home evictions, no access to healthcare, detentions and even deportations, as outlined in the government commissioned Windrush Lessons Learned Review. In 2018, the Windrush Compensation Scheme was set up to provide compensation to victims of the scandal.

In April that year, Britain’s then-Prime Minister, Theresa May, apologized for her government’s treatment of some Caribbean immigrants and insisted they were still welcome in the country.

But on the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush, thousands are still struggling to access compensation despite the Home Office reinstating their British citizenship.

In April, a report by the NGO Human Rights Watch stated that the Windrush compensation scheme “is failing victims and violating the rights of many to an effective remedy for human rights abuses they suffered.”

Nwazota has applied to the Windrush Compensation Scheme four times – but his application has always been rejected.

In documents seen by CNN, Nwazota was told by the Home Office that he meets the eligibility criteria to apply for compensation but that it has been unable to determine “whether he suffered detrimental impacts” due to a lack of evidence.

Nwazota is currently struggling to find a lawyer to take his case due to his lack of documents and funds.

According to the latest Home Office statistics, 1,518 people have received compensation so far. Another 381 have had their claims refused or withdrawn due to ineligibility and 1,988 have claims that “meet the eligibility criteria” but have been awarded zero compensation. This suggests that of an estimated 15,000 victims believed to be eligible for compensation, some 90% have yet to receive any payout since the scandal broke five years ago.

Anna Steiner, a lawyer and academic who represents Windrush claimants, told CNN that the Windrush compensation scheme is “not fit for purpose.”

“The government has access to all the victims’ documents: health records, information from the passport office and their employment history. These are British people who have paid tax and national insurance, have worked for all their lives and the government has confirmed their status as UK citizens, and yet, victims are still being denied access to compensation for the harm caused to their lives,” Steiner said.

“Even when you’ve spent months gathering evidence, drafted clear statements, and have demonstrated a clear impact on (victims’) lives, applications are not assessed properly by the Home Office. There seems to be a bureaucratic tick-box attitude to the claims where people are not recognized as human beings,” Steiner added.

Thomas Tobierre was stripped of the right to work after being told he was not a British citizen and has subsequently received compensation, but his wife Caroline, who was also entitled to compensation under the Windrush scheme, only received her payment after she died with cancer.

“My wife had to work while she was ill – because I was not allowed to work because of the Home Office,” Tobierre told CNN.

“The level of evidence you have to produce is ridiculous – it is almost impossible to prove your status,” said Charlotte Tobierre, Thomas’ daughter. “Because they took so long to compensate, we ran out of time to enjoy life with my mum. The last year of my mum’s life was ruined – the Windrush scandal overshadowed my mum’s battle with cancer.

“When the compensation arrived, it just about covered the cost of her funeral.”

To make matters more complicated, the Windrush Compensation Scheme does not make allowances for legal costs in making claims, Steiner told CNN.

This means that many of the applicants who have been out of work and accumulated debt cannot afford the legal representation they need to help with their claims, Zita Holbourne, co-founder and national chair of anti-racism group Black Activists Rising Against Cuts and a Windrush campaigner, told CNN.

“Approaching its 75th anniversary, the government should be doing something to make the scheme accessible – and the scheme should take it out of the hands of the Home Office. People have no trust when applying because they are the same institution that detained, criminalized and deported the applicants in the first place,” Holbourne added.

Anthony Bryan,now 65, was 8 years old when he moved to Britain from Jamaica.He told CNN he was detained by the UK government on two separate occasions in 2017 – and was going to be deported to Jamaicaby the Home Office until a last-minute intervention from his lawyers. He had also lost his job after he was asked for a right to work permit, he said, and he had been stripped of healthcare access after falling ill. Bryan could not claim benefits, as he did not have the required documents, he added.

His British nationality has since been reinstated. The Home Office has offered him – after deductions – £65,000 and he is appealing. His wife Janet, who is also entitled to compensation, is also appealing her offer under the scheme. Windrush Lives, an advocacy group and victim support network which is helping Janet, says the Home Office is currently disputing the £300 she is claiming for expenses after she repeatedly traveled to visit Bryan while he was wrongfully detained for five weeks.

The Home Office has not yet responded to CNN’s request for comment on these cases and its wider handling of the Windrush Compensation Scheme.

According to the latest government statistics from the Home Office, 1,227 claimants are seeking a review. Meanwhile, the number of people being awarded zero compensation is continuing to rise – particularly over the past year. While in April 2022 there were only 26 applicants eligible but receiving zero compensation, a year later this number had risen almost six-fold to 152.

As the backlogs and rejections grow, Home Secretary Suella Braverman issued a statement in January that rowed back on three of the recommendations from the government-commissioned “Windrush Lessons Learned Review.”

These included the appointment of a migrants’ commissioner and the commitment to hold a series of “reconciliation events” with people affected, to “listen and reflect on their stories,” the Windrush Lessons Learned Review stated.

Subira Cameron-Goppy, who works as part of the Windrush Justice Clinic, providing support to victims, told CNN: “The UK government consistently double-down on their own mistakes and have failed to rectify their errors. These failures are a part of a continuation of the government’s hostile environment policy.”

In February 2023, the Conservative government published an assessment of the hostile environment policy’s impact between 2014 and 2018. The report concluded that the five nationalities most impacted by the policy were of Brown or Black heritage and all five were visibly not White.

Ramya Jaidev, a co-founder of Windrush Lives, told CNN that the hostile environment was not simply about “two or three specific policy errors but is the result of a series of increasing legislative push-backs that started in 1962 with the reduction of the rights of Black people.
