Amidst the cool stones of the Western Wall, little prayers lay curled up between yellowing pages of hopeful notes. From all over the world, people write down their innermost feelings and burry them in the gaps along the face of the Western Wall.
The Western Wall forms part of the retaining wall of the Temple Mount and is considered the holiest place in the world for Jews. It is here that thousands of crinkled notes can be found stuffed into its cracks.
For centuries, Jews would inscribe their prayers on the Western Wall’s bricks, but during the British Mandate period, it was decreed that the Western Wall may not be defaced. A new solution had to be found for people to continue leaving behind lasting memories of their prayers, and the famous tradition of prayer notes was born.
There is, however, much dispute about the origins of inserting notes into the Western Wall, with Rabbi Getz, Rabbi Zalman Koren, Rabbi Gedaliah of Semitzi and the Ramban all recounting different ‘first’ instances of prayer notes in the Western Wall.
These letters are treated as holy, so twice a year the Western Wall’s Rabbi pries over 100 bags of notes from the bricks, and takes them to be buried.
As well as inserting one’s notes in person, letters to the Western wall can be sent via the Western Wall website, email or fax, where they are printed anonymously, on size 4 typeface in an illegible font to prevent anyone reading them, and hand-placed into the wall. The Western Wall Rabbi also receives hundreds of letters annually, addressed to "G-d, Jerusalem,” and of course, an entire department exists in the Israeli Postal Service for the thousands of letters sent to Israel simply addressed “to G-d,” which are all put in the wall, too.
Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have publicly placed their prayers into the wall. But most famously, in 2008 when Barak Obama inserted his note into the wall, it was removed and publicized by an Israeli newspaper, to the anger of many.
Not everyone agrees with the idea of putting notes into the Western Wall. Some say that this practice “pollutes” the holy space and others even argue that it might be idolatrous.
But what is for certain is that the practice of placing notes into the Western Wall is a source of comfort, hope, and encouragement for so many thousands of people who have no where else to turn.

If we're already talking about the National Library of Israel it has one of the most heartbreaking displays for the hostages held by Hamas etc. that I've seen.
A circle of chairs, a different one for each age (a highchair for Kfir, a preschool chair for Ariel, dining room chairs for the adults (there are still so many of them held hostage that to write their names would take up the majority of this post)), and on each chair is a book that the person likes or is relevant to their interests or what was going on in their lives before 7/10.

Are you related to the Foonly F1 or is that a coincidence?
THAT WAS MY FATHER!
okay so jokes about being "related" to a computer, yes. kinda.
The Foonly (computer/computer company) and Foone (my name) both date back to the metasyntactic variable "FOO", part of a series of Foo/Bar/Baz/Qux/Quux. These are meaningless placeholder variables used to indicate that you're taking about a generic thing. Like you might write a technical manual saying "to add 1 to FOO, you'd write FOO+=1". So basically they serve the same purpose as, like, X in algebra.
"Foo" got into programming through the 1930s surrealist comic Smokey Stover, which used Foo as a nonsense word. Smokey Stover droves a Foomobile, for instance, and and he calls himself a Foo Fighter (instead of a fire fighter). That made it into WW2 slang with "foo fighters" being what radar operators and pilots called unidentified things in the sky, what we'd now call UFOs. The Dave Grohl band is named after this term.
Anyway, I being a programmer of questionable namery, sometime in the early 2000s I was playing a C64 game and I lost, and it told me to enter my name. I assumed it meant "enter your initials", and rather than my actual initials I just put in FOO. I then tried to hit the joystick button to start a new game. Because of how the C64 joystick is wired (it's connected through the keyboard matrix), this means that trying to press the joystick button while moving it around made it enter letters. It entered NE, turning my "FOO" initials into "FOONE", and I thought that was a cool name, and used it the next time I needed to log onto IRC (which turned out to be talking to some weirdos about a 4chan-related project that did similar-image searching against anime pictures).
Two decades later, it's my legal name.
Anyway, Foonly and the Foonly F1 got their name from a PDP-10 assembler used at SAIL, the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (which is about 45 minutes from where I live now). It would give you a FOO NLI error, meaning "Foo is Not a Legal Identifier". The successor to their PDP-10 project was called the Super-Foonly, and after DARPA cut funding for the Super-Foonly project, some of the team left to found the Foonly Company and build the Foonly F1-F5 line of PDP-10 compatiable computers.
The F1 was a model and a computer: They only built one. But that one computer was used to generate some of the imagery in Disney's Tron, so it definitely has a place in history.

Let there be light! by National Library of Ireland on The Commons For seafarers throughout the millenia lights warning of hazards have been a blessing and a life saver in so many cases. The Commissioners of Irish Lights have been active in Ireland's waters not only with Lighthouses but also with buoys and other warning devices. Today's image is a workshop with the lenses or optics for light at Rue Point and Straw Island wherever they may be. These lights were to be powered by acetylene gas as set out in the title and by the tank in the image. Photographer: Ball, Robert S. (Robert Stawell), 1840-1913 Collection: Commissioners of Irish Lights Photographic Collection Date: Circa 1890 - 1909 NLI Ref: NPA CIL482 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie https://flic.kr/p/2o4Fbyc
