i will be honest i think winter holidays are fun. christmas is lame in practice but i like sparkly lights and hot chocolate and candy canes and snow. and most importantly i like having an excuse to plan presents and cook for all my friends.

Nilou Fan Art!

Disclaimer: Get ready for some more reading than you usually have to do on this blog, because I’ve been given a golden opportunity to talk about my Persian culture and Zoroastrian upbringing!

My art:

This drawing is of Nilou dancing, with a fireworks and an ocean in the background.

I decided not to change anything about her outfit except her veil, which I made sheer and added some glitter. All of the veils I have worn for traditional dance have had a sheer texture and shining embroidery and/or some beadwork, so I tried to incorporate this as best I could.

Nilou as Zoroastrian Representation: My take on it.

Since I was raised in the Zoroastrian belief system for a good amount of my formative years, I think I’m qualified to talk about what Hoyoverse got right and wrong.

Positives about Nilou’s design and characterization:

If the goal of Hoyoverse was to represent steadfast adherence to the Asha, the threefold path of “Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds”, then Nilou is excellent representation. Overall, we are shown that Nilou is a good-natured person, and most other characters and NPCs in the game seem to share that opinion of her.

There aren’t too many rules in modern Zoroastrianism for how a person should dress, except a blanket requirement that both men and women should cover their head for religious activity such as praying or visiting some temples; a veil like Nilou’s is acceptable for such, as would be a cap that covers the top of the head only. Personally, I used to wear a sheer veil in green for dance, and a white cap to visit the fire temples, and leave my hair uncovered for all other occasions.

The horns on Nilou’s headpiece date back to the Sassanid era, which was a really cool detail to include.

It doesn’t look like Nilou is wearing a Sedreh (a white blouse made of a singular piece of cotton) or a Koshti (a white belt made of wool), which typically are given to a youth at the ceremony of Sedreh-pushi. This could either be due to Nilou not having undergone this ritual yet, or because she wears her theatre clothing more often. However, she is wearing a mostly-white blouse, which indicates at least intent to dress for Zoroastrian festivals or rituals; I used to do the same thing when I was younger, it’s fine.

I love how determined Nilou is to celebrate Sabzeruz, a festival based on the Zoroastrian Norooz (Nowruz, noruz). The only criticism I have with how this celebration was handled in game was that no one gave us free mora or primogems as a Norooz gift, the inaccuracy, smh (/j)!

This is a really small detail, but it looks like Nilou has blue-green eyes in her character art, which were a prevalent feature in the tribal group my grandfather is from. It’s a subtle detail, but it is still something I noticed right away lol. Additionally, Nilou’s signature red hair may be a nod to the culture of dying one’s hair with henna, since it was and still is believed to be beneficial for one’s skin and hair.

My complaints about Nilou’s design and characterization:

Again, how dare they organize a Sabzeruz festival and not give us mora and primogems at the venue smh /j

So…much… detail…it took me all week to finish drawing this! /lh

Seriously though, nothing really. She’s not doing anything impermissible by the standards of what she is supposed to represent.

Overall conclusions: I think Nilou is good representation considering that there is virtually none other for Zoroastrian Persians, especially in a game as big as Genshin Impact.

Persian Parade

Nowrūz (Persian language: نوروز [noʊruːz]), meaning ‘New Day’) is the traditional ancient Iranian festival and also the start day of Iranian "New Year".

Nowruz is celebrated and observed by Iranian peoples and the related cultural continent and has spread in many other parts of the world, including parts of Central Asia, South Asia, Northwestern China, the Crimea and some ethnic groups in Albania, Bosnia, Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia.

Nowruz marks the first day of Spring and the beginning of the year in Iranian calendar. It is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox, which usually occurs on March 21 or the previous/following day depending on where it is observed. As well as being a Zoroastrian holiday and having significance amongst the Zoroastrian ancestors of modern Iranians, the same time is celebrated in the Indian sub-continent as the new year. The moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator and equalizes night and day is calculated exactly every year and Iranian families gather together to observe the rituals.

The term Nowruz in writing, first appeared in Persian records in the second century AD, but it was also an important day during the time of the Achaemenids (c. 648-330 BC), where kings from different nations under the Persian empire used to bring gifts to the emperor also called King of Kings (Shahanshah) of Persia on Nowruz.

The UN’s General Assembly in 2010 recognized the International Day of Nowruz, describing it a spring festival of Persian origin which has been celebrated for over 3,000 years.In 2009 Nowrūz was officially registered on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Since 2010, the United Nations General Assembly recognizes March 21 as the "International Day of Nowruz".

Persian New Year, also known as Norooz, Nowrooz or Nowruz, is a thirteen-day festival of joy celebrated annually by Iranians world-wide. For those who may not know much about the most important holiday in the Iranian calendar, here are todays.... #GlobeFacts!

Persian New Year always begins on the first day of spring (this year it is tomorrow - March 21st) – the Vernal Equinox – which is symbolic of new life, rebirth, new beginnings, and renewal.

The celebration has its roots in Zoroastrianism, and has been observed by the Iranian people (once known as the Persians) for at least 3,000 years.

An important tradition is the Haft Sin or Seven S’s, items on a table which symbols spiritual virtues.

Customarily, the Haft Sin consists of apples for beauty (Sib), dried lotus tree fruit for love (Senjed), vinegar for patience (Serkeh), sumac berries for sunrise (Somaq), garlic for health (Sir), sweet wheat germ porridge for affluence (Samanu), and a dish of sprouted wheat barley for rebirth (Sabzeh). Additional items that may be included are coins (prosperity and wealth), decorated eggs (fertility), goldfish (life), and hyacinths and tulips (spring).

The colours of Persian New Year are red, white, and green – the colours of the flag of Iran.

Hajji Firuz is a singing, dancing figure playing the trumpet and tambourine who heralds Persian New Year. His face is painted black and he wears red. His visit to a family’s home is supposed to bring happiness, blessings, and abundance in the coming year. Hajji Firuz is also the assistant of Amoo Norooz, who, like Santa Claus, brings gifts to children.

A divination ritual practiced by some during Persian New Year is to hide somewhere and eavesdrop on other people’s conversations. Hearing good news or a positive conversation means good fortune.
