don’t worry at all about that obvious awful racist antisemitic and islamophobic fascist user @shre\tl “Throughout history a great diversity of peoples has moved into the region and made Palestine their homeland:
Canaanites, Jebusites, Philistines from Crete, Anatolian and Lydian Greeks, Hebrews, Amorites, Edomites, Nabateans, Arameans, Romans, Arabs, and Western European Crusaders, to name a few. Each of them appropriated different regions that overlapped in time and competed for sovereignty and land. Others, such as Ancient Egyptians, Hittites, Persians, Babylonians, and the Mongol raids of the late 1200s, were historical 'events' whose successive occupations were as ravaging as the effects of major earthquakes ... Like shooting stars, the various cultures shine for a brief moment before they fade out of official historical and cultural records of Palestine. The people, however, survive. In their customs and manners, fossils of these ancient civilizations survived until modernity—albeit modernity camouflaged under the veneer of Islam and Arabic culture.”
this is true for colonized peoples the world over, and their “phd” needs to be publicly questioned and impeached.
Thank you for this .. I know I sound like an angry stupid person in that post but I really know my history better than them.. and I lied about the phd because theirs is questionable so 🤡 why not make fun of them

The Harbour of Truth
In the port of Muscat, two sons were born to a rich merchant. As they grew up, their enemity too grew with them. He summoned the eldest of them and blessed him, "If you quarrel like this, one will murder the other. Therefore, you should not remain in the land of your father and forefathers. Go forth to the Harbour of Truth and prosper".
Therefore, the son was sent off with enough goods and ten special "containers of treasure". He traveled to many lands, met the chieftains, kings and emperors, and requested some of them to safekeep a 'treasure' till he returns. The treasure was a container of gold covered with a layer of pickle. But when he returned, all he got were containers filled with pickle.
Tumblr media
Finally, he reached Kozhikode, made the same request to the Zamorin (King of Kozhikode) and went to Lanka. When he returned, his container was returned to him. He noticed that the container hasn't gotten lighter nor the seal was broken. He realised that he finally discovered the Harbour of Truth.
He opened the container, presented the gold to the Zamorin and requested permission to settle down in Kozhikode. Thus, were established the Koyas of Kozhikode.
********
The name "Koya" comes from the Persian honourific "Khawaja" meaning "Master/Teacher". The chief of them was Shah Bandhar Koya, the Commissioner of the Kozhikode Port. He supervised customs on the behalf of the Zamorin, fixed the prices of the good, and collected the tax to the treasury. After Zamorin conquered Valluvakonathiri (King of Valluvanadu) and attained the Rakshapurusha Sthanam (the office of the Great Protector) of Mamankam, Shah Bandhar Koya was given the right to stand on the left side of the Zamorin during Mamankam.
I am from Kerala.

The Cuman-Kipchak, Tatars and Masked Helmets
Tumblr media
In popular perception it is very common to associate masked helmets such as the ones found in Kovali (picture above) or Lipovets with the Cumans. This has been portrayed in media as well, for example in Age of Empires II and later on very notably in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. However this attribution is in reality mostly without basis, but to understand why we first have to look at its origins, and to do that we first need to talk about who the Cuman-Kipchak are and how they relate to the Tatars.
The Cuman-Kipchak are known for having a significantly powerful confederation in Eurasia which was at its height at the start of the 13th century. While sometimes claimed that the Cumans and Kipchaks were two different peoples, it is more likely that the two names are simply synonyms for the same conglomeration of people, whom would have been made up of a lot of various turkic groups living under the confederacy whose land was often called Cumania by christian sources and Desht-i Qipchaq by Islamic ones. Hence from this point on I will refer to them simply as Cumans.
The Cuman confederation was famously broken up due to the Mongol expansions, which caused groups of Cumans to flee westward. Some ended up settling in Hungary, while others ended up in Rus lands and yet others were conquered and assimilated by the Mongols. What is important to note here is that the Cumans cannot be thought of as one unified group of people all with the same customs, because they were not. This is even more emphasised post-Mongol conquest as the Cumans who settled in various different lands would have gradually adopted to the customs and culture of the lands whom they settled, and this will be important to determine where the famous masked helmets fit into all of this. But before that, let's briefly talk about the Tatars. Tatar was simply a catchall term for the Mongols, and is thought to originate from Persian though to my knowledge it is a term mainly used by European sources. As the Mongols continued to conquer people and incorporate them into their empire, the definition of Tatar would also encompass any and all groups which had become part of the Mongols and were serving in their armies. After the breaking up of the empire into the four Khanates, the term Tatar came to mostly be used to refer to the Golden Horde, which at this point incorporated lots of Turkic people into it including Cumans. Hence the term Tatar does include Cumans in it, but it is not a synonym as it would not include Cumans who were not part of the Golden Horde as it's explicitly related to the mongols. The Cumans who were part of the Tatar Horde are at this point already becoming pretty distinct from the Cumans who are not, and as time went on these differences started to grow even more. The Cumans in Hungary for example are noted to gradually adopt to Hungarian customs, and by the 15th century they cease to keep their signature hairstyles and clothes, and grave finds of Cumans from that time period include a lot of materially hungarian items.
So then, masked helmets. The two famous examples mentioned above (Kovali and Lipovets) are both from Golden Horde territories. Some older russian research tends to for some inexplicable reason associate them with Cumans whom they call Polovtsy, sometimes claiming that they potentially predate the Golden Horde. However there is not really any evidence pointing to this and the masks found bear a lot of resemblance to later 15th and 16th century Persian ones, indicating that they date to the days of the Golden Horde (the shape of the skulls are also most akin to post-mongol examples). What is even more important is that masked helmets of this type have not been found in gravesites associated with Cumans or other turkic peoples outside of the Golden Horde which would indicate that these helmets are in fact something that relate to the Mongols rather than the Cumans.
Now obviously as mentioned earlier the Golden Horde did contain Cumans in it, and so a Cuman serving as a cavalryman in a Tatar army could very well have used a helmet like this. However there is nothing pointing towards the claim that the Cumans themselves were who brought these helmets to the Horde, as no archeological finds support this argument. Rather it's that these are armours which would've been used by anyone part of the Horde, including Cumans, however would also not be found outside of direct Mongol influence. For example, a Cuman settled in Hungary would not have used a helmet like this since he wouldn't be living in a culture to adopt it from.
Which reaches the conclusion that these are Tatar helmets and should not be thought of as Cuman helmets.
Funnily enough the portrayal of Cumans in Kingdom Come: Deliverance heavily conflates Tatars and Hungarian Cumans and treats them as interchangeable, which they were not. While they in-game claim that the Cumans roaming bohemia in the game are from Hungary, their portrayal is wholly unfitting for that but would make significantly more sense if they were to be considered Tatars where the presence of the masked helmets would make sense (although most other 'cuman' gear in the game is entirely unfitting for a historical portrayal of either Tatars or Cumans in the early 15th century, but that's a post for another day).

002. BACKGROUND …
real quick and dirty pt 2 because i am always running on steam apparently.... born the only child to a young model and screenwriter couple in los angeles. apple of their eyes, doted upon endlessly, pampered and spoiled
always expected that she'd end up on screen one way or another, so her parents had her do auditions from a very young age. she got a few parts here and there as a kid in some movies, but her 'making it big' moment was a disney show when she was around 14.
bridget mendIer type of success where she was the star of a show and the show was very popular and she ended up being in a disney channel original movie as a main character. she also released some music through disney, though she cringes at it now a days.
as soon as her contract and the show ended, she refused any further contracts. her parents understood, though they were somewhat disappointed. she decided to finish up high school and got admitted into nyu as a pre-med student. drastic career change, but she really wanted to leave behind anything to do with acting and music as it didn't feel 'genuine'.
genuine or not... she ended up becoming somewhat of an influencer on tiktok and youtube as she documented her journey through school, talked about what it was like to be an actor (more specific details after her nda expired, of course), and other such things. her parents, though they love her to death, wanted her to pay for her schooling herself since she seemed insistent on leaving it all behind. she makes money through social media as well as modeling stints here and there.
has that sort of attitude where you're always questioning if she's really nice or just really good at being fake nice... (it's both).
003. CONNECTIONS …
would you hate me if i said i'll come back to this later...

Character Concept: Thief of Baghdad inspired Warforged Genielock
I mentioned this ages ago in my post on why a Sinbad the Sailor/Arabian Nights style campaign would be awesome. One of the movies I watched way back when was the 1940 Thief of Baghdad, in which there is a) a genie subplot, and b) an extremely memorable scene in which the evil sorcerer Jaffar builds and enchants a ‘Silver Maiden’ toy-slash-construct to assassinate the Sultan. Allowing for the 40s orientalism of it all, that scene really stuck with me. And I did wonder. What if that construct had been a thinking being? What if the Silver Maiden came to life in truth, not just under Jaffar’s enchantment, and grew to hate the purpose she was used for?
And with the Genie Warlock, the particular imagery of the Silver Maiden, with her blue face, gels quite nicely with the thought of a Djinn patron, another slave of the sorcerer whom she bonded with and freed when she freed herself, earning herself friendship and magic and favour from her elemental friend/patron. So. Fidah, the Silver Maiden.
(Note: playing around on PF2e’s Pathbuilder character builder has my brain thinking level-by-level, so I figured I’d change up the format and do Fidah’s build from Level 1 to Level 20)
Character Sheet: Fidah the Silver Maiden
Name: Fidah (This is an Arabic name. Persian would probably make more sense given the Thief of Baghdad inspiration, but I’m enchanted by a pair of very similar names in Arabic, Fiddah, meaning silver, and Fidah, meaning redemption, both of which dovetail with our theme so nicely. So Arabic it is)
Race: Construct (Warforged)
Age: 24
Background: Slave Assassin (custom background to fit the movie, in which the Silver Maiden lures victims close by a performance as a toy before stabbing them with a hidden knife, so we’ll take proficiency in Performance and Sleight of Hand, proficiency in a musical instrument (setar), proficiency in one language of our choice, and we’ll take the By Popular Demand background feature from the Entertainer background)
Class: Warlock (Genie)
Description: An elegant mechanical ‘performer’, Fidah looks like a feminine human made of silvery metal. Her face and hands are enamelled blue, as if she had blue skin. This was possibly intended as a taunt to her master’s djinn slave, that she was made partly in his image, but the djinn, on being freed, made the enamel more durable and beautiful with magic, essentially giving her his blessing.
History: Fidah was designed and constructed as a slave assassin by an evil sorcerer, intended to act as a magnificent mechanical toy/performer to lure wealthy targets into complacency before killing them. As the years went on, however, Fidah developed rather more self-awareness and will than the sorcerer had intended, and began to hate her role and fear her creator. At the same time, she developed a secret rapport and then battered friendship with another of her master’s slaves, a captured djinn named Azad. Eventually, unable to allow herself and her friend to be abused any longer, Fidah lured the sorcerer into complacency as she had lured dozens of other targets, and murdered him.
She took the ring in which he had imprisoned the djinn, who suddenly feared that Fidah meant to use him as her master had, despite their years of friendship. Power is tempting and addictive, after all. Nothing could be further from Fidah’s intent, however, and she immediately freed her friend as she had freed herself. In gratitude, and deep fondness, the djinn granted her a measure of his power henceforth. Initially, she feared it, for she had no desire to become a creature like her creator, a magic user to whom power was everything and lives nothing, but the djinn pointed out that he, too, was magical, and that it was what one did with power that mattered, not power in itself. So Fidah accepted his gift, and went out into the world with his ring on her mechanical finger.
Patron: Azad, the djinn who was her fellow slave under her old master.
Ideal: No one should be bound to another’s service against their will.
Bond: I will explore my freedom and honour my friend and the magic he gave me.
Flaw: The closest I’ve known to intimacy was luring dozens to die in my arms under the command of my old master.
Starting Stats: Strength 8 (-1), Dexterity 14 (+2), Constitution 16 (+3), Intelligence 10 (+0), Wisdom 12 (+1), Charisma 16 (+3)
Starting Proficiencies:
Saving Throws: Wisdom, Charisma
Skills: Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Sleight of Hand, Stealth
Armour/Weapons/Tools: light armour, simple weapons, setar/lute (instrument), poisoners kit
Languages: Common, Primordial, Infernal
Spells By Level 20:
Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Mage Hand, Guidance, Mind Sliver, Message, Minor Illusion, Chill Touch
Spells: Armour of Agathys, Thunderwave, Hex, Comprehend Languages (ritual, Book of Ancient Secrets), Alarm (ritual, Book of Ancient Secrets), Disguise Self (at will, Mask of Many Faces), Silent Image (at will, Misty Visions), Invisibility (at will, Shroud of Shadows), Hypnotic Pattern, Fly, Thunderstep, Greater Invisibility, Sickening Radiance, Hold Monster, Flesh to Stone, Crown of Stars, Maddening Darkness, Wish
(Probable) Eldritch Invocations by Level 20:
Mask of Many Faces, Book of Ancient Secrets, Misty Visions, Ghostly Gaze, Gift of the Protectors, Eldritch Mind, Shroud of Shadows, Devil’s Sight
(Probable) Feats by Level 20:
Skill Expert, Moderately Armoured, Inspiring Leader
Features By Level:
Level 1:
Warforged: Constructed Resilience (poison resist, adv vs poison, no sleep, no disease, no eat/drink/breathe), Sentry’s Rest (6hr long rest, inert but not unconscious), Integrated Protection (+1 AC, armour integrated to body), Specialised Design (1 skill, 1 tool).
Slave Assassin: By Popular Demand (find place to perform for room and board, earn popularity)
Warlock: Pact Magic, Genie Patron (Djinn), Expanded Spell List (Djinn), Genie’s Vessel (ring with compartment), Bottled Respite, Genie’s Wrath (thunder damage)
Spells: We’ll take Armour of Agathys, because the Silver Maiden’s embrace is a deadly thing, and Thunderwave, to honour her patron, as well as the Eldritch Blast and Mage Hand cantrips.
Level 2:
Eldritch Invocations: We’ll take Mask of Many Faces, because she’s quite distinctive and a quick disguise option will likely be useful, and Fiendish Vigor, because we’ll be swapping that out next level for Book of Ancient Secrets.
Spells: We’ll take Hex for our third 1st level spell.
Level 3:
Warlock: Pact of the Tome. We’ll take the Guidance, Mind Sliver and Message cantrips.
Eldritch Invocations: We’ll swap Fiendish Vigor for Book of Ancient Secrets, and take the Comprehend Languages and Alarm rituals. I did think about the Unseen Servant ritual, which would have felt rather thematic, at least in terms of imagery, but I think Fidah as an ex-slave would not really approve. Oh, she could treat her non-sentient heap-of-force very well, but I think it would still hew too close. So. We’ll go with Alarm, for when she’s in her ring and wants to know if someone comes close to it.
Spells: We’ll take Invisibility for our first 2nd level spell.
Level 4:
ASI: We’ll bump Charisma to 18.
Spells: We’ll take Spider Climb, because an ex-assassin construct crawling around the ceilings is a slightly terrifying and very cool image. For our cantrip we’ll take Minor Illusion.
Level 5:
Eldritch Invocations: I should probably take one of the EB Invocations, but I what I actually want is Misty Visions, because I think Fidah is becoming very fond of illusion.
Spells: We’ll take Hypnotic Pattern for our 3rd level spell. Because of her history, I feel like Fidah leans quite heavily on illusions and deception to render people vulnerable to her. Not necessarily out of desire to live that way, and just simply because of training and habit.
Level 6:
Warlock: Elemental Gift (thunder resistance, bonus action for 30ft fly speed for 10mins prof/day). This possibly makes Spider Climb redundant, so we might retrain that for Fly instead, so we can spread the flight around. Which will, amusingly, make Fidah the slowest flier despite being the source of the flight.
Spells: She does still want to honour her patron, so we’ll go Thunder Step.
Level 7:
Eldritch Invocations: We’ll take Ghostly Gaze. By this stage, Fidah is pretty good an infiltration.
Spells: For our first 4th level spell, we’re going to take Greater Invisibility.
Level 8:
ASI: We’ll bump Charisma to 20.
Spells: Not going to lie, I’ll take Sickening Radiance just because I love the spell. Fidah as a silver avatar of the Plane of Elemental Air might also be rather thematic for a spell of killing light, in a dark sort of way that I’m not sure she’d been happy with.
Level 9:
Eldritch Invocations: I don’t have strong feelings on the 9th level Invocations. I might go with Gift of the Protectors, because Fidah might want the chance to protect rather than take lives. Or, I could go back and take Devil’s Sight, if I’ve been struggling with darkness, or Agonising Blast, if I want some extra damage.
Spells: For our 5th level spell, we’ll take Hold Monster. Again on a theme of holding people vulnerable to attack.
Level 10:
Warlock: Sanctuary Vessel (can bring up to 5 people into vessel with me, and if they stay 10mins they get a short rest).
Spells: For our final cantrip, we’ll go with Chill Touch. I could go Toll the Dead, because ominous sound effect, but I suspect Fidah values efficiency over drama, and Chill Touch prevents healing.
Level 11:
Mystic Arcanum (6th level): I debated a couple of options here, including Eyebite, because mechanical assassin with dread eyes, True Seeing, because Fidah relies a lot on illusion and might want to be able to see through to the truth, but I think in the end I might go with Flesh to Stone, because we have been running on a theme of rendering people vulnerable, and for some reason a silver assassin construct that turns people to stone gives me strong Ray Harryhausen, Sinbad, Thief of Baghdad vibes, which was the initial inspiration for Fidah, so I’m going with it.
Level 12:
Feat: We’re going to take Skill Expert. I know there are more interesting options, but I feel like Fidah can go a little classic. So we’ll bump Dex to 15, we’ll take proficiency in Perception, I think, or possibly Persuasion, and we’ll take expertise in Stealth.
Eldritch Invocations: Either Eldritch Mind for concentration spells, or either Devil’s Sight or Agonising Blast if we didn’t take either of them at 9th level.
Level 13:
Mystic Arcanum (7th level): I mean, I want Crown of Stars. I always want Crown of Stars. But Forcecage might be the more sensible option. (Let’s be honest, it’ll be CoS unless someone leans on me – also the imagery on the blue-faced, silver construct, quite angelic)
Level 14:
Warlock: Limited Wish (once per 1d4 long rests, get one casting of any 1 action, 6th level or lower spell)
Level 15:
Eldritch Invocations: We’ll take Shroud of Shadow to get invisibility at will.
Spells: Since we get invisibility for free now, we’ll retrain that for Tongues.
Mystic Arcanum (8th level): Not going to lie, I’m not that fond of any of the Warlock’s 8tg level options. Dominate Monster would be good, but I suspect Fidah, given her history as a slave, might draw a line at actually mentally dominating someone. Holding them is one thing, but charming them another. I might go Maddening Darkness. It’s got no thematic link at all, but it’s cool.
Level 16:
Feat: Couple of options. We could go Moderately Armoured to bring our Dex to 16 and get a breastplate. We could do Metamagic Adept to get subtle spell. Might do something weird like Mobile, or supportive, like Inspiring Leader. That last one might work very nicely.
Level 17:
Mystic Arcanum (9th level): We’re a genielock, so we will be taking Wish, and happily.
Level 18:
Eldritch Invocation: Whichever of the three floating options we haven’t picked up yet. So one of Eldritch Mind, Devil’s Sight or Agonising Blast.
Level 19:
Feat: One of the ones we didn’t take at Level 16.
Level 20:
Warlock: Eldritch Master (plead with our patron for 1min to restore all our slots 1/day)

Actually @writeintrees I am not quite done with talking about the Shapeshifter Coffeeshop AU, because I can't just leave anything alone lol
Side note: the coffeeshop au world is just our world. No magic or shapeshifters or anything, just cute vibes
The shop is called Salty Dog Cafe. It started out as a joke because Carlisle was a sailor on cargo ships in his twenties, but everyone loves the name. It's near one of the city's piers, yet another reason to embrace the name. The staff refer to themselves collectively as the 'dog pack', and it's a tradition to write what kind of dog you think you'd be on your nametag - or other animal, if a dog doesn't quite fit.
The logo is a scottish deerhound wearing one of those sou'wester hats and sporting an exaggerated beard and a smoking pipe. Warrick likes to hide the logo somewhere in window murals. Currently, the Instagram-follower favorite is one he did of the hound - wearing the hat and a yellow rainslicker - standing in a little boat and facing down a kraken. Occasionally Warrick'll swap the deerhound for another type of dog (one that a staff member has claimed) to see who notices.
The Salty Dog opens at 6am and stays open until 10 at night, which is how they have such a diverse array of regulars and the whole morning/evening shift thing. Whoever is the designated baker for the day usually gets in at about 5am to start in on the morning's goodies. Kerr' schedule usually means he's working the morning baker shift the first half of the week, then flips to evenings for the second half. No one knows how he manages this but he actually get annoyed if you try and put him on all mornings.
When the second location opens, Reese calls it the Salty Cat Cafe, and has Warrick make a second logo that depicts a grizzled persian cat in sou'wester hat and pipe. A friendly 'rivalry' between the dogs and cats is born shortly after - no one takes it too seriously though, it's all for fun and publicity. The baked goods at the Salty Cat are a lot 'tamer' than the Dog, owing to the fact that Kerr mainly works at the Dog and his protege Aleksei isn't nearly as good at coming up with gross-sounding-but-tasty recipes. Yet.
Warrick and Kerr do manage to convince Carlisle to get a liquor license for the Salty Dog (it doesn't take much convincing, honestly) and create an entire menu for it over the course of a few very long, very tipsy weeks. The drinks aren't actually that boozy, just enough to get the flavor and kick from the alcohol. Jay and Portia refuse to sell more than two to a single customer, insisting that they're baristas not bartenders. The cafe only sell this 'hard coffee' option after 5pm, and usually only on nights when there's live music in house. It's more of a novelty thing, honestly, but it draws business all the same.
As for the regulars...
While everyone is convinced that Adrien Montrose is part of the mafia, he's not. The Montrose family are business tycoons, and they may have some cutthroat business tactics, but they're not criminals. Adrien starts coming to the Salty Dog because he's the manager of one of the family's businesses nearby, and one of his staff recommended the cafe. He keeps coming because the coffee is actually really good, and he secretly enjoys the way Kerr 'haggles' him into buying some of the baked goods in the mornings.
(They started dating when Adrien came in one evening on a live music night and Kerr used the opportunity of a full house to corner Adrien and ask him if he was actually part of the mafia or not. Adrien used that as an opportunity to take Kerr on a date disguised as a 'come to this address and find out' challenge. They just ended up hooking up in Adrien's office. The animals.)
No one is aware that Adrien is a Montrose at first, and they definitely don't know that he and Lucas are related. Lucas only appears occasionally, almost always when he's made it his goal to make Adrien's day difficult. He's set to inherit the CEO title for the Montrose Group, and likes to make sure his youngest brother knows his place as a simple manager.
Along that line, while most of the Salty Cat staff are pretty sure Luka Kovac is a mafia enforcer or something, he's actually a giant nerd working at the local planetarium. He just looks scary as hell. He likes the cafe because it's quiet and has a cozy atmosphere, and someone on the staff keeps stocking the 'take one, leave one' bookcase with vintage sci-fi. He starts leaving his own sci-fi books in exchange, and slowly everyone catches on to the fact that he's just a giant, soft dork.
Calypso de la Fuente is a nightclub owner, which is why she only ever shows up in the hour or so before the Salty Dog closes. She'll only come in when she's had to be awake during the day for something, which happens every couple of weeks. Whoever is stuck making her horrifying twelve-shot, amaretto-drizzled monstrosity usually also has to navigate her trying-to-be-nice-but-too-tired-for-niceties conversation. Then she'll down half the drink on her way out the door and head to her club until the wee hours of the morning. She and Jay have definitely flirted with each other, but Calypso already has a girlfriend and Jay just likes flirting with terrifying women.

HEADCANON // HOLIDAYS / CELEBRATIONS
quite a long HC post, as a warning.
Although the Sumeru region pulls on quite a few locations, most of my research surrounding Sylvie has been more focused on Ancient Persia and modern day Iran, so a lot of my research for what holidays Sylvie would know / have celebrated or been a part of is rooted there.
They do not super actively take part of the celebrations as often ( just due to the fact of their travelling + having felt some disconnection from their old identity and history ) but if they are in Sumeru during these times, or do remember, they will partake and draw in friends into it and will happily babble about the holidays ... or optionally learn about the new celebrations that have been put in place due to their 500-year absence.
Some of the holidays include ( with their real world counterpart names and traditions ):
Nowruz ( نوروز, new day ) — the celebration of the new year which takes place on the spring equinox; if often falls on the 21st of March, but may vary between the 19th and 22nd of March. Often celebrated through a thorough spring-cleaning of the house and buying new clothes for the year, visiting family, and preparing certain dishes such as Samanu.
Something Sylvie has not been acquainted with is the practice of setting up 7 items on the table ( Haft-sin ) all which start with the letter sin (س) in Persian,
Sabze (Persian: سبزه) – wheat, barley, mung bean, or lentil sprouts grown in a dish.
Samanu (Persian: سمنو) – sweet pudding made from wheat germ
Persian olive (Persian: سنجد, romanized: senjed)
Vinegar (Persian: سرکه, romanized: serke)
Apple (Persian: سیب, romanized: sib)
Garlic (Persian: سیر, romanized: sir)
Sumac (Persian: سماق, romanized: somāq) – a type of flower.
And then waiting for the exact moment of the spring / March equinox with family to begin celebrating. This celebration lasts 13 days for them.
Chaharshanbe Suri ( چهارشنبه‌سوری, 'The Scarlet Wednesday' ) — a prelude to Nowruz and is often celebrated on the eve of it, often denoted by jumping over fires ( as a purification practice ), spoon-banging ( which is relatively equivalent to going door to door in disguises and hitting spoons against plates to receive snacks ), and smashing the pot ( quite literal! The practice to smash a pot into the made fires is believed to transfer the misfortune of the house to the pot. Some may place a coin in the pot, others may drop it from the roof of the house instead, minor variations exist based off location ).
Other events include fortune-telling, the burning of rue seeds, and for some, dropping the end of a sash in the house of someone they are romantically interested in; pending on what the family ties to the end of the sash will show if the family is favourable about the union.
Sizdah Be-dar ( سیزده‌بدر, 'Getting Rid of Thirteen' ) — denotes the end of the Nowruz celebration after 13 days, often celebrated with a big picnic outside. Some customs include releasing sprouted greens into moving water ( often ones that were used for the Haft-sin ), playing pranks ( akin to April Fool’s ) and tying grass knots to release into moving water ... which is more-so done by young single people who wish to find a partner.
Yaldā Night ( شب یلدا ) — takes place on the winter solstice and is a celebration shared with friends and family. Fruits and nuts are prominent foods, especially pomegranates and watermelon; the colour red in these fruits symbolizes the crimson hue of the dawn and glow of life. The origin of this celebration was to keep evil away due to the day being seen as inauspicious, but in due time that has been lost in meaning.
Mild superstitions exist based off regions, such as whoever eats carrots, pears, pomegranates, and green olives during this time will be protected from insect bites, especially such as ones from scorpions. Activities common to the festival include staying up past midnight, conversation, drinking, reading poems out loud, telling stories and jokes, and, for some, dancing. Candles are also often used to decorate the house during this time.
Sepandārmazgān ( سپندارمذگان ) — an ancient tradition celebrating the Amesha Spenta ( Spenta Armaiti ) who is given the domain of "earth"; this day is often denoted as a day for women, where men will often give them presents and women will take the day to rest. In Persian, it is called Mardgiran and means ‘possessing of men’.
In modern days, it is a celebration day of love towards mothers and wives, prayer for good harvest, honouring the deity of Earth Spandārmad, and putting signs on doors to destroy evil spirits.
This is an example of a name-day feast, which are festivals celebrated on the day of the year when the day-name and month-name dedicated to a particular divinity intersect.
( Which is neat because the Spenta Armaiti is associated with earth and sacred literature describes her role as a Mother Nature character, thus, she is linked to fertility and to farmers, and is associated with the dead / death. Amurdad / Ameretat does not have any solid research on a tradition / celebration for the name day, but is another deity that is intrinsically linked directly to immortality and plants. I proceed to gesture gently towards Sylvie who is linked to fertility, the life cycle, and immortality. )
Ramadan / Eid al-Fitr — the tradition of month-long fasting ( from dawn till sunset ) from the beginning of the first crescent moon to the next, of self-reflection and contemplation, and of celebrating with loved ones. Eid al-Fitr is the celebration of breaking the fast that lasts for 1-3 days, and is denoted by large feasts and gift exchanges, charity work, and gathering together in prayer.
Sylvie does not often practice these celebrations on their own, but while they lived in their personas, they did.
By extension, Sylvie is equally excited to learn about the holidays of the other nations as well! Although they’ve learned of many due to their travelling and remaining in a spot for a human generation, they still have many they have missed.
( I am always happy to fix stuff if it’s incorrect!! It is not my culture, but I do want to give it due respect. This isn’t the extent of all the celebrations, but it’s more prominent ones. )

weird ascension of darius the great
Tumblr media
have u ever heard of Darius the great. i  mean people who are passionate in middle east’s history might or probably do know about this king since he was the first Persian ruler who actually unified the what is now known as persian empire and under his rule it went onto great heights. he kinda reminds me of Julius creaser since their story is pretty much the same :- great majestic prime then died tragically.
anyways back to the topic, what really makes me laugh about his case is not his empire and his rule but the hilarious chain of events that led to him becoming king.
never heard about this...buckle up since this is going to be a hell of a ride.
the story starts with Cyrus the great
yes that Cyrus the first to ever write a human rights tablet. great ruler. salute to this man. he was actually a distant relative of Darius.
one day he dreamed of Darius with wings behind his back one wing shadowing Europe the other Asia. Cyrus fearing that Darius might be plotting against him send him away. though Cyrus's story ends tragically i dont really feel bad for him. he died at the hands of queen Tamarius. badass lady seriously dont mess with her as Cyrus learned the hard way. she cut off Cyrus's head after he killed her son and dipped his head in the pool of his own blood. i think the exact words she said were i always keep my word and    "Drink your fill of blood!. Badasssss i say with a capital B. well she had aright to be angry since Cyrus got her son slaughtered.
HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE A WOMAN SCORNED!!!!!
ANYWAY I ALWAYS GET A LITTLE TOO PASSIONATE IT SEEMS.
SO after Cyrus death, as the custom dictates his eldest son should inherit the throne the problem was Cyrus had 2 sons Cambyses and smerdis.
while Cambyses was the elder one he was also a short tempered spoiled  and paranoid man who had a habit of going into fits of rage and doing things he later regretted. in my opinion he was also an idiot.
there is actually a story of how when a close comrade of him told hm that he drank too much. and he was like ,”ok if i drank too much then i wouldn't be good at shooting a bow and then he had the comrade’s son stand against the wall and used him as a target board. he said that if he drank too much then he will PROBABLY miss the shot and then proceeded to shoot the comrades son in the heart IN FRONT OF THE COMRADE.
WHAT.    A.     DICK.
kinda like Joffrey from got.
smerdis was....
his brother?? he is not the focus here and is irrelevant.
so... FFUUUUUCCCKKK OFFFF SMERDIS!!!!!
ANYWAYS, he also had a weird mind considering he sometimes had very crazy plans that always ended in disaster.
case in point in his new years of crowning himself  he had this awesome (not) plan of invading Egypt by basically sending his army through Sahara desert. SENDING AN ARMY THROUGH SAHARA DESERT!!!! l
LIKE. DUDE. WTF. IS. WRONG. WITH. YOU.?
even today i think people have not fully travelled through Sahara desert through foot or on horses and camels imagine in that time.
understandably this ended in disaster as i think we still haven't found the lost army of king Cambyses as people have named this mystery.
though he did end up conquering Egypt during the reign of pharaoh phastmik 2?? i think the name is. but the first attempt and its consequence still remain a mystery. (probably)
So when he visited Egypt he took his brother with him because he had a dream of smerdis on a throne and his form  big enough to touch the heaven.
(i swear this family has weird dreams).
this nightmare made him fear that smerdis will usurp him in his absence so he ordered smerdis to come with him. now the most logical decision in these circumstances would be to go yourself and in order as to not have a power vacuum in your empire u leave a close family member to rule temporarily. but what this idiot dd? he took his brother with him and put a magician aka a complete stranger to rule in his absence.
i.  am. done.   with.   this.   guy.
soon his paranoia reached its limit and he had his brother assassinated.  througha trusted confidant of his - perxasspes. after the deed was done prexasspes returned to egypt to give his master the good news.
also fun fact i dont know where this comes in the story but the guy who assassinated smerdis, perxasspes his name was i think, his son was actually killed by Cambyses.
PLOT TWIST!!!!.
when Cambyses was to return to his Syria after a successful conquest of Egypt he received very surprising news considering the circumstances - in his absence his throne has been taken by..... SMERDIS?? yeah smerdis.
or is it??
continue if u want this mystery solved. HEHEHEH......MWAHAHAHAHAHA
Cambyses at first was confused by this recent development until someone reminded him that this must be a power grab by an opportunistic usurper.
i. am. honestly. loving.  this.  whole.  situation.  really. so.  far.
in his haste to reach his kingdom Cambyses accidentally  stabbed his thigh with his sword  while mounting his horse and died in Egypt. BUT BEFORE DYING HE INSTRUCTED HIS NOBLEMEN TO SEIZE HIS THRONE FROM THIS SMERDIS...
OR IS IT???
since he had no heirs the power vacuum that was created and the fuckup events following it are finally here so lets get STARTTTTEDDDD!!!!
the problem the Cambyses men faced was that this smerdis was an extremely popular king and majority of the population believed him to be real son of cyrus. yes this is fake smerdis. i really suck at keeping suspense *sigh*.
perxasspes the one who killed the real smerdis could have resolved this confusion but he kept his mouth shut most likely to keep himself innocent because no one is going to leave u alone if u admit that u killed a prince on his brothers orders. most likely this would have created a scandal. or because perxasses was sadist who enjoyed peoples suffering.
the smerdis on throne also kept himself in seclusion whenever possible and surrounded himself with people who never met the real smerdis so as to further protect his identity.
enter one nobleman named otanes, otanes had a sneaking suspicion as to who this imposter was. years ago during cyrus’s reign a man had his ears cut off. otanes believed that this man could be the imposter. but to find out if this was true was very difficult since the imposter king always had a turban on which hid his ears and thus he could not confirm if he had ears or lack there of. so otanes had his daughter who was part of imposter kings harem sneak up on him  while he was asleep and and check if he had ears.
NOOOOOO EARSSSS!!!!!
OTANES HAD HIS SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED. THE MAN ON THE THRONE IS NOT IN FACT THE REAL SMERDIS BUT A MAN ALSO NAMED SMERDIS.
HISTORY TWISTTTTTT!!!!!!
it gets worse btw.
turns out i the magician who was tasked to keep an eye on the empire had a brother whose name was smerdis and he  in the absence of cambyses and smerdis crowned his brother king. its awesome timing since the real smerdis had just been secretly murdered.
otanes now gathered a bunch of men to overthrow the false king and one of them happened to beeee.........
DARIUS!!!! our man is finally here.
it seems that darius had pieced the plot together himself and came to assist the noblemen in their rebellion.
meanwhile the fake smerdis and the magician were getting nervous because the rumors of their scheme were spreading and so to get control of their situation they enveloped perxasspes in their scheme to make a public formal announcement that the false smerdis is the real smerdis and that the real smerdis had not been killed but the weight of his lies and betrayals finally began to crumble upon the assassin. he decided that he will no longer follow the line filled with betrayals and falsehoods. he climbed on a tall building and openly denounced the false king and confessed in front of the astonished crowd that the smerdis sitting on the throne is indeed an imposter. he urged to those who were listening to him to rise up and destroy the false king and restore the true persian royal family line. then in a dramatic exit he jumped and fell to his death. he must have realized he was fucked any way so death seems like a better alternative.
back to otanes and his men, after storming the royal palace and killing the imposter and his magic bro. the noblemen took to the streets and explained the evil plot to their people and urged people to cut down any magi they see. by morning, almost every magi was slaughtered.
the people seem easily impressionable tbh.
after their successful rebellion the noblemen had to decide who will rule them. in order to decide who will be king they determined that they will mount their horse  and whoevers neighs first on the sunrise will be the king.
well at least there wasnt another war. that is a very effective yet childish way to do it.
according to one version of the story darius turned to his horse master obareus  for help who proceeded to help his master by rubbing his hand on one of darius horse’s favourite mare’s vulva and then just before sunrise bought it close to darius’s horse nose which caused the horse to immediately snort and whinny.
ughhhhh so disgusting!!!
and thats how my friends darius the great became the ruler of persian empire after a chain of hilarious clusterfuck of events.
well his intelligent reflects from his actions. piecing together a conspiracy theory from abroad which turned out to be accurate is pretty sherlock holmes stuff.
darius my pal hope u are proud of yourself. u really left a mark on history and ur legacy.

What fascinated you to combine both Greek and Persian mythology?
Seems such an interesting setting and to be truthful I don't remember any ya book having a Persian "retelling" mythology. Asia minor is being misrepresented and in literature at least it's used as a medieval setting mostly looking like Aladdin without the magic 😅 or has the stereotypes of modern day slightly diminishing the countries.
Which is a shame because persian culture was as amazing like ancient Greece. It had epics in literature and rich mythology and gods.
Hello! Thank you so much for the ask!! First I need to clarify that my book is not a YA; The two MCs are a Financial Accountant in her late twenties and a literal Dad who is more than two thousand years old 😁 For those who don't know, the setting is our modern era.
This Dad, Raphael's character, is what made me consider adding Persian culture. Sometimes characters pop into your head a certain way. His modern name would be Raphael either way because this Semitic name is widespread or recognizable in the parts of the world he travels and he wants to be a "chameleon" (as I write in the book). His personality also appeared set and fixed in my mind.
I wanted Raphael to have a big influence and ancient presence in human societies. Such prominent civilizations were first developed in antiquity near the fertile crescent of the near east. In the beginning, I was thinking that perhaps Raphael would be an Assyrian but when I was researching a bit and got introduced to Persian culture I realized Raphael IS the definition of a Persian man 😂
While there are - of course! - so many types of people within an ethnicity and people are people everywhere, I felt the character has a set of traits that were more representative of the outlook of the Persian culture. His type of savviness, his love of poetry and romanticism, his type of cosmopolitan attitude, his type of drama, the type of luxury he loves, his type of tenderness towards his lovers and his children, his neverending quest for progressive change which coexists with certain traditional values (as I know them in Greece), are all things that I could envision in an immortal who lived different eras of the Persian history.
In the book there are many different Persian characters. Raphael just happened to fit a certain mold from the beginning. The more Persian content I saw, the more I felt he could fit there. I also got to write hints or references in the story about Persian mythology and Persian epics, which was great!
Persian culture is a delight to explore because it has sooo much in common with Greek culture (words, customs, attitudes)! It's like learning more things about your cousin. I could describe Greeks as "depressed, unhinged Persians who do 20% less tarof and 80% less poetry" 😂 (at least North Greeks)

THE TRANSFER FROM EDESSA TO CONSTANTINOPLE OF THE NOT-MADE-BY-HAND IMAGE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST (944)
Tumblr media
The Transfer of the Icon of our Lord Jesus Christ Not-Made-by-Hands from Edessa to Constantinople occurred in the year 944. Eusebius, in his History of the Church (I:13), relates that when the Savior was preaching, Abgar was the ruler of Edessa. He was stricken with leprosy all over his body. Reports of the great miracles performed by the Lord spread throughout Syria (Mt.4:24) and even reached Abgar. Without having seen the Savior, Abgar believed in Him as the Son of God. He wrote a letter requesting Him to come and heal him. He sent his own portrait painter Ananias to Palestine with this letter, and commissioned him to paint a likeness of the Divine Teacher.
Ananias arrived in Jerusalem and saw the Lord surrounded by many people. He was not able to get close to Him because of the large crowd which had gathered to hear the Savior. Then he stood on a high rock and tried to paint Christ's portrait from afar, but this attempt did not succeed. Then the Savior saw him, called him by name, and gave him a short letter for Abgar in which He praised the ruler's faith. He also promised to send His disciple to heal him of his leprosy and guide him to salvation.
Then the Lord asked for some water and a cloth to be brought to Him. After washing His Face, He dried it with the cloth, and His Divine countenence was imprinted upon it. Ananias brought the cloth and the Savior's letter to Edessa. Reverently, Abgar pressed the holy object to his face and received partial healing. Only a small trace of the terrible affliction remained until the arrival of the disciple promised by the Lord. This was Saint Thaddeus, an Apostle of the Seventy (August 21), who preached the Gospel and baptized Abgar and all the people of Edessa. Abgar attached the Holy Napkin to a board and placed it in a gold frame adorned with pearls. Then he placed it in a niche above the city gates. On the gateway over the Icon he inscribed the words, “O Christ God, let no one who hopes on Thee be put to shame.”
For many years the inhabitants had the pious custom of bowing down before the Icon whenever they went forth from the gates. Later, one of Abgar's great-grandsons, who ruled Edessa, fell into idolatry, and decided to remove the Icon from the city wall and to replace it with an idol. In a vision the Lord ordered the Bishop of Edessa to hide His Icon. The bishop came by night with his clergy, lit a lampada before the Icon, and placed a ceramic tile in front of the Icon to protect it, and then he sealed the niche with bricks.
As time passed, the people forgot about the Icon. But in the year 545, when the Persian emperor Chozroes I besieged Edessa and the city's position seemed hopeless, the Most Holy Theotokos appeared to Bishop Eulabios and ordered him to remove the Icon from the sealed niche, saying that it would save the city from the enemy. When he opened the niche, the bishop found the Holy Mandylion, and the lampada was still burning before the Icon, and an exact copy was produced upon the tile protecting the Icon.
The Persians lit a huge fire outside the city walls. Bishop Eulabios carried the Icon Not-Made-by-Hands around the city walls, and a violent wind turned the flames back on the Persians. The defeated Persian army retreated from the city.
In his Church History, the sixth century writer Evagrios Scholastikos refers to the Holy Mandylion (or Napkin) as The Icon made by God (Η θεοτεύκος εἰκών).
In the year 630 Arabs seized Edessa, but they did not hinder the veneration of the Holy Napkin, the fame of which had spread throughout the entire East. In the year 944, the emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitos (912-959) wanted to transfer the Icon to Constantinople, so he paid a ransom to the emir of the city for it. With great reverence the Icon of the Savior Not-Made-by-Hands and the letter which He had written to Abgar, were brought to Constantinople by clergy.
On August 16, the icon of the Savior was placed in the Pharos church of the Most Holy Theotokos. There are several traditions concerning what happened later to the Icon Not-Made-by-Hands. According to one, Crusaders stole it during occupation of Constantinople (1204-1261), but the ship on which the sacred object was taken, perished in the waters of the Sea of Marmora.
According to another tradition, the Icon Not-Made-by-Hands was transported to Genoa in 1362, where it is preserved in a monastery dedicated to the Apostle Bartholomew. It is known that the Icon Not-Made-by-Hands repeatedly produced exact copies of itself. One of these, named “On the tile,” was made when Ananias hid the Icon in the wall on his way to Edessa. Another, imprinted on a cloak, wound up in Georgia. Possibly, the various traditions about the original Icon Is explained by the existence of several exact copies.
During the time of the Iconoclast heresy, the defenders of the holy icons, who shed their blood for them, sang the Troparion to the Icon Not-Made-by-Hands. In proof of the validity of venerating icons, Pope Gregory II (715-731) sent a letter to the Byzantine Enperor, in which he mentioned Abgar's healing, and the sojourn of the Icon Not-Made-by-Hands at Edessa as a commonly known fact.
The Icon Not-Made-by-Hands was put on the standards of the Russian army, in order to protect them from the enemy. In the Russian Orthodox Church it is a pious custom for a believer to read the Troparion for the Icon of the Savior Not-Made-by-Hands when entering the temple, together with other prayers.
According to the Prologue, there are four known Icons of the Savior Not-Made-by-Hands:
Abgar's original Icon at Edessa (August 16).
The one at Kamuliana (Καμουλιανά), which is mentioned by Saint Gregory of Nyssa (January 10).
According to Saint Νikόdēmos of the Holy Mountain (July 14), the Kamuliana Icon appeared in the year 392, but it resembled an icon of the Mother of God (August 9).
During the reign of Emperor Tiberius (578-582), Saint Mary Synklitike (August 11) was healed by the Icon on the tile (August 16).
The Feast of the Transfer of the Icon Not-Made-by-Hands is observed along with the Afterfeast of the Dormition. The commemoration of the third Icon Not-Made-by-Hands mentioned above is called the “The Savior on Linen Cloth.”
The particular reverence for this Feast in the Russian Orthodox Church is also expressed in iconography, and the Icon Not-Made-by-Hands was one of the most widely distributed.
THE MONK ANTHONY, PILLAR-DWELLER OF MARTKOPS
Tumblr media
Our holy father Anton of Martqopi arrived in Georgia in the 6th century with the rest of the Thirteen Syrian Fathers and settled in Kakheti to preach the Gospel of Christ. He always carried with him an icon of the Savior “Not-Made-By-Hands.” Anton made his home in the wilderness, and deer visited him every evening to nourish him with their milk.
One day the deer arrived earlier than expected, and they were followed by a wounded fawn. Clearly something had frightened them.
When Anton retraced the animals’ path, he discovered a nobleman, the head of a nearby village, hunting in the fields. Astonished to see the old monk with his icon, standing amidst a gathering of deer, the nobleman, being a pagan, became convinced that he was dangerous and ordered his servants to take him to a smith and chop off his hands.
Anton was led at once to the smith, but when the craftsman heated his sword and drew it above the monk’s hands in preparation, he fell down suddenly and his arms became like wood.
The daunted smith fell mute, but blessed Anton made the sign of the Cross over him and he was immediately healed.
Having heard about this miracle, the nobleman perceived that Abba Anton was truly holy, and he began to hold him in reverence. “Tell me what you need, and I will provide it for you,” he told Elder Anton. The monk requested a single piece of salt, and they brought him two large blocks. He broke off a small piece and placed it near his cell for the deer.
After the incident at the smith’s, many people began to visit Anton, and the holy father constructed a monastery for the faithful.
But before long their attention became burdensome, and Elder Anton fled from the world to the peak of a mountain. There he began to preach from the top of a pillar, where he would remain the last fifteen years of his life.
When God revealed to Fr. Anton the day of his repose, the monk-stylite gathered his pupils, imparted to them a few last words of wisdom, blessed them, and died on his knees in front of his beloved icon.
St. Anton’s body was taken down from the pillar and buried in the monastery that he had founded, before the icon of the Theotokos.’

LUKE 9:51-56; 10:22-24
51 Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, 52 and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. 53 But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. 54 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?" 55 But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. 56 For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives but to save them. And they went to another village.
22 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.
COLOSSIANS 1:12-18
12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

With intricate maps, vibrant illustrations, and in-depth descriptions, it's an essential companion for any Marvel fan.
However, as we explore the pages of the Atlas, one notable absence stands out – the lack of information about Iran. Despite the Atlas's meticulous attention to detail in depicting lands from around the world, Iran's rich history, culture, and geography are notably absent from its pages.

As fans of the Marvel Universe, we appreciate the effort put into creating such a comprehensive guide, but we also recognize the importance of inclusivity and representation.
We hope that future editions of the Atlas will rectify this oversight and shine a spotlight on the diverse landscapes and peoples of Iran, enriching the Marvel Universe even further.
The persian/iranian faravahar:
Tumblr media
A vital lesson of history is the Biblical magi(plural for Magus):The distinguished wise men who journeyed form lands of the East to visit Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh in homage to his birth.
"After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:1-2)
Below: The Three Magi, Byzantine mosaic, c. 565, Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Ravenna, Italy (restored during the 19th century). As here, Byzantine art usually depicts the Magi in Persian clothing, which includes breeches, capes, and Phrygian caps.
Tumblr media
Their identities, and their exact number is a mystery. However  prominent figures within the Christianity; they are venerated as saints or even martyrs in many Christians communities, and are the subject of numerous artworks, legends, and customs. Both secular and Christian observers have noted that the Magi popularly serve as a canvas for various ideas, symbols, and creative interpretations
There are legends and narrations bout the prominent three*:
Caspar or Gaspar (and several other Greek or Latin variants such as Gathaspa,[6] Jaspar, Jaspas, etc.)from India .
Melchior (Melichior,[6] Melchyor) from Persia(todays Iran)
Balthasar (Bithisarea,[6] Balthassar) from Arabia.
In the meantime, let's continue to celebrate the MARVEL Atlas for its expansive scope and immersive storytelling, while also advocating for greater diversity and inclusion in our favorite fictional worlds. Excelsior! 🚀📖
*: These names apparently derive from a Greek manuscript probably composed in Alexandria around 500 CE, and which has been translated into Latin with the title Excerpta Latina Barbari.[6] Another Greek document from the 8th century, of presumed Irish origin and translated into Latin with the title Collectanea et Flores, continues the tradition of three kings and their names and gives additional details.
