🖊 + for whichever oc you'd like to talk about! :3c
!!!! :D
Okay! I thought I wanted to talk about Orym bc I love per so much but. Apparently I can only ramble to myself or in a discord chat. xP So. I'm gonna scroll through my WIPs and just ... pick.
You get: Whatever words come out about Distant Light's minor/supporting characters! (so, way more characters than 1 pen emoji, whoops. xD)
We've got Jax's crew, Serenity's team (assuming I ever get around to naming any of them), and I guess Jaylon should have at least a couple colleagues to mention/think about, huh? xP
So! (going under a cut bc ofc it got long, I decided to talk about so many characters, and didn't even get around to Jay's potential colleagues. xD)
Prism Crew: Erendiz (ey/em or it/its), Yildiz (she/they), Zesiro (he/she/they), and Test_0374 (it/its). ^^ Erendiz & Yildiz are siblings, named so purely because the names mean Jupiter & star respectively & it seemed fitting for sci-fi. xP (also, fun fact: deciding to give Erendiz it/its pronouns is what made me try them out for myself and uh, huh. xP) Zesiro is the eldest person on the ship & has a sibling of their own, though we won't be meeting them in the book. (I haven't even named them or anything. I just know They Exist xP) Test is the ship's AI, and is named Test for 2 reasons: 1) I am a lazy bitch who doesn't know science or technology terms & didn't want to spend a year trying to come up with a workable acronym, and 2) Jax is its creator and they are also a lazy bitch who didn't want to name an AI until it worked, and by the time it did (presumably attempt #374 lol), they were attached to 'test' & it stuck. Erendiz is covered in freckles, knows how to throw knives, can set fire to anything, & is the other computer genius-type on the ship. Yildiz dyes her hair blue - sometimes the ends, sometimes halfway up, sometimes all the way, it varies. But it's always blue. She's the sharpshooter, and she's ace so she might not fuck the cosmic horror but she'll absolutely try to romance it. Zesiro ... might be a cyborg. or something. I dunno, I saw a cool picture & brain said 'ooh, DL' & everything except the Main 3 & the aliens are very malleable right now. xP knows how to use a gun, prefers some kind of sword. bc Cool. nonbinary lesbian, usually playing Voice of Reason bc everyone else is like. 23, max and she is Tired. & Test! I love the idea of Test, but I haven't quite figured out what kind of AI I want it to be. Like. No 'taking over the world/sending all the humans out the airlock' kinda plot line here; we're sticking to the aliens, but. outside of it throwing Shayde & Malle under the bus as soon as they step on board, I haven't got much for it as a character of its own. Also it will probably threaten to start building itself a body to physically make Jax be a reasonable human being, but idk. xD I got Really Attached to these guys immediately after creating them, but then the inability to stick to one project came back around to bite me & the antagonist polycule took over my brain, so like. I've got nothing for them now. ;_;
The Aeris crew! They're a medical team! Funded by the gov't/one of the Main 3's family. This is another area where my knowledge is ... less than fuzzy & I haven't even started on research-type tasks bc I managed like. 2 personal rambles about the Main 3 & my brain went 'cool, cool, you're gonna think about BP now, and ooh, look at that prompt over there!' and what can I do but roll with the motivation? Anyway! I'm gonna say there are ... hmm, what's a reasonable number ... maybe 10 medical professionals total, but I'm only gonna name like. 3. because this cast is already Big & I get attached way too easily, apparently. xD So Imma just throw some names down on here & see what I can come up with. Morana, bc according to this thing it means death/illness & I like the thought of like ... I dunno if any of your teachers at school had you do this, but one of my language arts teachers in middle school had us look up the meanings of our names. I don't remember why. Anyway, I like the thought of this like, 12-year-old seeing 'death, illness' and thinking something along the lines of 'no, I don't think I will' & going on to be the exact opposite. I could probably come up with some very angsty backstory things to justify this name but we're just gonna move on lol Saren, bc I've been looking at names for a long time now & it's after midnight so. Name. Liable to change, except for how it probably never will now bc I said that. XD Went to do medical stuff in space bc ... potentially shady reasons. bc why not. Make everyone shady! Oh wait, shit, maybe -- no, wait - well. Well. Hm. might have a 'loyal to the Wrong Side except for in this one specific case' kinda deal happening here. >.> & ... Chayim. Again, bc I've been looking at names for a While. xP But also bc according to a thing it means life and, well. I have 'death/illness' up there, so why not lol. probably went to space to make First Contact, just to find out someone beat them to it. xD
...Okay. It's after midnight & I am tired. I quite literally forgot about Jay's potential colleague(s) until I scrolled back up to add the read more. xP I hope this isn't terrible-awful-difficult to read; I just didn't want a gazillion-mile long post & the way tumblr does its spacing bothers me T_T I will ... maybe remember to take notes on Reni's team at work later & might even decide on a Jaylon colleague or two xP. Or maybe I'll forget all about all this & try to figure out UWKM stuff again. Who knows? Not me!
Okay, bed. XD

blursday!!! do any of your ocs have complex family relationships (had bio family in mind, but found family works too!), and if multiple which one is your favorite?
Oh this is an interesting one. Okay. Time to infodump.
I do love the main quartet's friendship, but I'm not sure how found family it is - and since you had bio family in mind, let's talk about that! Okay so, if we're only looking at bio family, most of the pov characters' parents are dead (or simply awful, see: Darius Averwell). None of them have any bio siblings either.
However, I will say Sol probably has the most complicated family dynamic!! Or, well, most complicated feelings to his parents because they're both also dead. (I swear I'm not doing this on purpose.) See the thing with Sol's parents is that they had good intentions and they did love him, but they weren't exactly the best parents.
Sol's father, a Wolf, left to protect them, but he also left to start a Beast rebel group, and arguably leaving them on their own instead of taking them with him actually made life harder for them. No village wanted to take in a Beast lover and her Halfling son. Meanwhile, his mom tried to raise him well, but sh e had a tendency to point out how similar he was to his father (not the most tactful thing to do). And then she died protecting a Beast child when he was ten. Sol was pretty much left to fend for himself, and the AMA took the opportunity to snatch him up. And despite it all he still did love his parents, so, yeah. Complicated.
Also a less complex family dynamic but one of my favorites is actually from another WIP, Corrupted!! The mc, Sami, has a very close relationship with her big brother, Irumi, and in a way that's why the entire story goes the way it does. Because she's so close with Irumi, she's adamant he wouldn't just up and leave - so she investigates and discovers the sword. Her bio mom, Yuka, is also super nice and super supportive and - gasp - actually survives till the end!!! :0 :0 :0 (Though with a little suffering.)
Sami's father sucks though. We don't talk about him.

It’s Blursday! (Or whenever you’ve got the spoons, really)
your characters are in a horror movie. who is:
the jock
the prankster/fool
jumpy supporting girl (gender neutral)
the pretty one
the mean girl (gender neutral)
the anti-hero/pawn
the final girl (gender neutral)
— @outpost51
Blursday!! I love that I'm starting to get blorbo asks now, thank you so much! :D
So... is it cheating if I use Encore to answer this, since its gimmick is that it's a subversion of a horror movie?? I'mma do it anyway (to the best of my ability, anyway. Some of these interpretations are looser than others).
The Jock: Grant
The Prankster/Fool: Red
Jumpy Supporting Girl (Gender Neutral): Mavis and Pascal
The Pretty One: Willow
The Mean Girl (Gender Neutral): Sunny
The Anti-Hero/Pawn: Joey
The Final Girl (Gender Neutral): Cece
Ok, now that I've warmed up, I'll branch out. Let's try this for Agent Ace:
The Jock: Sophia
The Prankster/Fool: Meera (ooh, we're dropping new names!!)
Jumpy Supporting Girl (Gender Neutral): Max
The Pretty One: Jade
The Mean Girl (Gender Neutral): Bellona
The Anti-Hero/Pawn: Janus
The Final Girl (Gender Neutral): Harley
And now for EMBR of the Earth:
The Jock: Chase
The Prankster/Fool: Miles
Jumpy Supporting Girl (Gender Neutral): Tana
The Pretty One: Sidney
The Mean Girl (Gender Neutral): General Donovan
The Anti-Hero/Pawn: Dr. Clay
The Final Girl (Gender Neutral): Sage

Hey! Happy blorbo blursday! Zombie apocalypse hits which oc(s) survives, which oc dies the dumbest way, and which oc gets bit but doesn't tell anyone?
Narwhal hiiiiiiiiiii
Let's see, let's see.
Let's unleash zombies in Xatal, since the (current) ragtag crew of the Rae’dinnah has the most potential for maximum silliness. They've crash-landed, no ship to escape. (Zombies in space is terrifying but warrants way more space than one post allows probably, but if you want something similar, try this and this on for size. As Jarvis Johnson says, always be pluggin.)
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
Cap'n Suzo's surviving -- he's arboreal and depending on the zombies we're talking about, they likely can't climb high enough to get him.
Vigo's getting bit, and she doesn't want to be a bother or risk hurting anyone, so they'll wake up one morning and she'll just be gone, along with a gun, a few explosives, and as much ammo as Vigo can carry. And she can carry a lot.
Dekdek and Cosh are going out together -- the stupidity of it depends on who you ask, but they're rigging the biggest truck they can find to explode and ramming it into a whole crowd of the undead bastards. Is it dumb and probably a waste of resources? Yes, but the explosion sure does look cool as hell.
Gatha has to be convinced not to go with them, because Dekdek is about all she's got left of her old life, but she's got family to protect. Likely goes out playing distraction so the rest of them can get away.
Rees is surviving; he's got a daughter and the skills necessary to con some rich dude into selling him a whole ass bunker for five credits and a pack of smokes.
Liki's fast as fuck boiiyyyeee sorry the audio played in my head ANYWAY i don't think even fast zombies are catching her ass.
Roki is, quite literally, an organic railgun. Good luck, zombies. Xe's also like glued to Suzo's hip so they're probably both in that tree. You'll know which one it is, there's clawmarks all the way up the trunk from where they had to drag Liki up with them by her tail.

Happy blorbo blursday! What is your blorbo's (or blorbos') most treasured possession?
Hello, and happy blorbo blursday to you too!
Fallon's most treasured possession is probably either A) a hairbrush engraved with a rose that was a gift from her mother when she was 13, or B) her crown, because that's also from her mother, in a way. Of course the crown is also a symbol of everything she has to do, and the phrase "heavy lies the head that wears the crown" definitely applies to her. (Yes, I'm aware the phrase is actually, in the play, "uneasy lies the head that wears the crown." but most people say it with heavy, and that makes more sense in Fallon's case, though uneasy also applies.)
Kristopher's most treasured possession is his horse, Phillip, though he doesn't like to think of him as a possession. (He doesn't care too much about material stuff, since being a Prince, he always had plenty of stuff, but he was still miserable. He knows money can't make you happy if you life is shit.) Phillip was both an excuse to leave the castle, and a way to get out of Westcliff. He was also Kristopher's only friend for a very, very long time, and Kris would sleep in the stables sometimes when he was particularly unhappy. :'(

Jance and Teran?
Part of me is surprised that you managed to pick folks from the same project, considering I made no effort to label which stories any of those characters are from in the tags.
These two are kind of fun, because you get a different answer about their relationship depending on who you ask. They go way back because Teran was childhood friends with Jance's brother.
Jance likes Teran well enough; he doesn't think of Teran as exactly a 'Top tier' friend, but ranks him higher than an acquaintance. To Jance, he's the kind of pal that you'd invite to your wedding because you'd feel weird if you didn't, but you also wouldn't be exactly distraught over having them RSVP "No" to that. Teran is someone Jance is completely happy to see at an evening out with friends, but not someone he actively tries to spend time with. He thinks Teran's pretty reliable and an all-around solid guy, who maybe takes things a little too seriously.
Teran, on the other hand, tolerates Jance. Jance is just overall too much for him - too loud, too squirrel-brained, too present; if they were dogs, Jance would be a Jack Russell Terrier to Teran's Saint Bernard. If Teran was given the choice between a last-minute, overnight shift in an understaffed maternity ward where he alone is responsible for 17 colicky newborns, or two hours alone with Jance Rios, he'll take the babies - at least he gets paid for that. When Teran thinks too hard about the fact that Jance was considered the de facto "responsible older child" for their gaggle of neighbourhood kids growing up, he marvels that all of them survived to adulthood.

Happy Blorbsday! I was sending asks and got interrupted and now I can’t remember who I sent them to. So if I already sent you this just ignore this.
But I really want to know all the things about Kiris! Wanna tell me all the things about Kiris?
YES! All the Kiris!! I love this guy. Some random tidbits about this kid:
absolute goofball. As soon as he starts feeling even somewhat comfortable around someone, his extremely stupid sense of humor comes out.
non-violent to the core. Pretty much the only character I've ever written who takes a very firm stance on violence. Has approximately zero fighting instincts, and still feels bad about that one time he accidentally dropped a book on someone's foot.
loooooooooves his libraries. Can't get enough of them. He's basically an expert con artist and all he wants with his success is a nice little window seat and a whole stack of books within easy reach, and also maybe some snacks.
despite point number 2, he's actually competent with a quarterstaff. Quarterstaff training was the main choice of physical exercise at Cym Temple, and after nine years of several hours of it a day, even his guard, Aris, thinks he could hold his own if he ever bothered to fight. But he won't, because he doesn't do that.
when he was still at Cym, the few times he'd been "good" according to the headmaster, he was allowed into the records room to hand-copy important documents. This is how he learned forgery.
he's most proud of the fact that he can make bubbles with his magic. Like, sure, he can speak with the local gods and all that, and see the future, yeah fine, but the bubbles though.
the same magic which lets him make bubbles also makes him capable of hearing overwhelming emotions. Sometimes, it's so loud that it incapacitates him. There was one night where the Turre (the invading empire) plundered and razed an entire principality, and even though Kiris was over four hundred miles away, the noise was so great that he was completely unable to control his abilities and spent the rest of the month unsure whether he was in the human realm, in a prophecy, or was in the Other Realm with the gods.
he wishes it were safe for him to go back to his home principality, Cym. He wants to see if his mother is still alive, since the last time he saw her he was only six. He understands why she gave him to Toor Temple--really, he does--but he also wants to know how his life could have been if they'd found a way to push through his prophecies/the Realms being too thin for him without the Temples' help.
although it's possible to change the lead up to whatever he sees in his prophecies, and likewise the aftermath, it is impossible to change the events that he sees. This is one of the reasons he does his best not to fall into prophecy--he doesn't like locking in the future.
that said, he's very excited about the moon landings.

Hi sapling
It's blorbsday for another hour (for me) Do you have any silly little guys?
Unfortunately your blorbsday is over but I do have some silly little guys! If I were going to take this literally though I think there's a rough correlation between height and silliness among my blorbos, which I chalk up to the tall ones having more space for silly.
But let me tell you about one who makes an appearance in AOM and will get his own story one day: Marcus. He's a bovan who I'm tentatively basing on Maronesa cattle and who is good friends with Horatio. He's a pigment magician and impressionistic painter, and Sid ends up with rainbow hair partly to act as a test subject for his latest dye experiments. In general he's good-natured and fun to hang out with, but I think the thing that most qualifies him as a silly little guy is the fact that he does not own a plain shirt. He has a lot of different styles of shirt, ranging from button down to poncho with extra steps, and every single one of them has the kind of pattern you might see on china or a dish rag or retro kitchen flooring. You cannot separate him from his paisley, and why would you want to?

Hey everyone! So I got this idea from @writernopal, and I thought, since I often have trouble both coming up with questions for special writeblr ask days and gathering the spoons to actually send them (plus, last time I tried sending an ask to a bunch of people, I think it might've gotten eaten from a couple of inboxes). So I'll post my question here and let you all reblog with your answers!
Today's Blorbo Blursday Question: What do your characters think of lying? Will they lie? If so, how far would they take a lie?

you know what it's four minutes to blorbo blursday over here and none of the mutuals have been talking to each other lately it feels like so happy timezone! have you had any characters on your mind much lately? tell me everything :D
happy time zone !!! I agree it's been dead for awhile I think everyone is having a long 2023 lol
lately I've been really thinking about my blorbo Gabriel :] he's from my nano project, bad things happen, which. i never introduced. I WILL though I still have your ask
I've really been fleshing out Gabriel's past and familg lately. he has a really toxic dynamic with his brother---his brother was highly emotionally abusive when they were kids, up until Gabriel got kicked out of the house, and it... never got better from there. Gabriel is functionally estranged from his brother and father, though he makes secret meetings with his mom because they actually got closer after his dad kicked him out (since his mother was really upset over the whole thing and threatened divorce and shit but was too sick at that point from various health issues to be able to leave Gabriel's father). so they meet for tea like twice and it's kind of one of Gabriel's highlights of, like, his entire routine
he takes his new friend jesús to see his mom at one point and jesús' whole understanding of Gabriel's emotional state and dynamics witj other people changes bc he can barely believe how like calm and quiet and kind Gabriel is around his mom (since Gabriel's whole thing is like "brash comedic cynical reckless strange" but around his mom he's very very careful). i lobve him

Genuine Question, Y'all
Actually, there's two of them
Do you want me to tag you when I participate in tag games?
AND
Would you like to receive writing asks from me each week (Worldbuilding Wednesday, Blorbo Blursday, Storyteller Saturday)?
If you vote, please consider reblogging with a comment on what you voted for! Or if you'd rather stay anonymous, you're welcome to DM me with any specifics you'd like to give.
ALSO, if you vote yes for any option, I would appreciate it if you let me know your pronouns and what name you'd prefer to go by, just so I can cover my bases and make sure I'm addressing you appropriately!

Happy Blorbo Blursday yourself! Please, please tell me why everyone wants to drag Reeve? I love it, but I'm curious!
LMAO. Thank you so much for this, love. I'm going to include an excerpt but let me try to explain too.
The problem is everything about Reeve should traditionally make him one of those smooth, cool characters.
He's a high-level telepath
He's smart
He's a trained killer
He's had some spy training
He's queer
He's mad attractive
He's a leader
He has a classic car
He cares about his appearance
AND YET HE WILL NOT ALLOW IT.
He's a dweeb. Full stop.
Reeve was that teacher's pet. If he worked in an office, he'd probably tattle on people taking long lunches and never, ever bring stationary home with him--but he's the team leader of what is essentially a small hit squad so that makes it worse. His aloofness could be sexy but instead, he leans into pathetic-yet-pretentious. I mean, we love him to death for it but he's so easy to make fun of.
Here's an excerpt from Arc 1 (Gareth's POV) where they get after him about it:
--
Alex whistled, startling them both out of their exchange. “You’re looking spiffy.”
Reeve’s shirt and slacks, because the man actually wore slacks, were pressed with neat creases and he’d put some extra effort into his hair.
“He’s got a hot date with Julie,” Hannah teased, coming in from the living room, her hand extended to Reeve for him to take his phone.
“It’s coffee.”
“Who’s she again?” Gareth asked, passing a plate with a sandwich to Alex.
“She works at the corner store in town on Second Street,” Reeve said in a monotone.
“You know, the one we go to all the time? Brunette, little nose,” Hannah added as she plopped into the seat across from Alex.
“Oh, yeah.” Gareth leaned his back against the counter and took a bite of his own sandwich. “What the hell do you have in common with her?”
Reeve slipped his phone into his pocket and cocked his head. “Not sure if I should take relationship advice from someone who needs to check what county he’s in when going to meet a date.”
Alex turned to Gareth and quipped, “It’s really cute that he thinks you’re concerned about whether or not the sex worker is licensed.”
Gareth nearly choked. Psychometrists, telepaths, empaths, the fucking lot of them. But he was relieved to see some life returning to the kid, even if it was mostly bravado to cover up nerves.
“Alex,” Reeve started, but was cut off.
“Who does she think I am?” Alex asked. Explaining the strange set of roommates with no discernible jobs was part of why Gareth found it easier not to deal with the whole dating scene.
Hannah smirked. “My half-brother.” Alex rolled his eyes at her, but she gave Reeve a kind look. “I think it’s nice. She’s pretty.”
“She’s not that cute,” Alex muttered.
Reeve crossed his arms. “Yes, well, you’re the only person in this house not at least a little attracted to women, so I hope you won't mind too much if I ignore your opinion.”
Gareth watched Hannah’s eyebrows attempt to make an escape off the top of her head as she dropped her jaw and looked at him. Gareth wrinkled his nose at her in response. This wasn’t going to be pretty.
“Je-sus-Christ,” Alex snapped. “Touchy much?” He looked annoyed, but any fear or vulnerability he’d shown earlier by the shooting range was nowhere to be found.
Reeve closed his eyes. “I’m sorry. I can get reactive when people are purposefully embarrassing me.”
Which was an extremely Reeve thing to say.
Alex processed that for a moment. “Oh my god, you’re such a robotic nerd.”
Reeve gave an unamused frown.
Gareth shook his head then smiled pointedly at Alex. “You’ll learn to ignore Reeve. He’s just got a nasty case of T.L.S.”
Reeve’s head snapped back. “Where the hell did you hear about that?”
Hannah put her fist over her mouth as she choked on a laugh. “That was me.”
Reeve made a face. “You grew up in a Mars foster, why the hell did that ever--”
“Hey,” Alex interrupted, his face flushed. “What the fuck is T.L.S.?”
Gareth did his best to keep from laughing long enough to speak. “I’m sorry, I was just trying to lighten the mood.”
“It stands for Team Leader Syndrome,” Hannah explained.
Alex’s brow furrowed. “So it’s the big head you get from being in charge?”
“That’s not accurate,” Reeve replied from between his teeth.
“Sounds right to me,” Gareth shrugged.
Reeve let out one of his long-suffering sighs. “It’s a set of personality traits that result in being tapped to lead.”
“Like what?”
“Like being organized, detail-oriented, decisive…”
Hannah continued counting off on her fingers, “Practical to the point of ignoring social graces, a buzzkill, a know-it-all…”
“Sounding like a robotic nerd?” Gareth added.
“Okay, okay.” Reeve glared at him. “He gets the idea.” He turned to Alex. “I apologize.”
“It’s cool,” Alex said, all straight faced. “You can’t help it. It’s part of your condition and I’d be a real ass holding that against you.”
Hannah and Gareth lost it.
“Are you happy now?” Reeve asked Gareth.
He nodded, trying to rein in his chuckling, and failed.
--
[For the record, as a telepath Reeve has the advantage and disadvantage of knowing what people really think about him. So he gets the "omg Reeve why have you never heard of fun???" thoughts but also knows how much they care about him so their dragging doesn't bother him.]

Blorbo blorbo blorbo!! If you've got two wips: how would the OC groups handle being location-swapped between the two? If you've got one wip: how would the OCs handle time-travel?
Thank you for the ask!! I do in fact have two WIPs! Sadly, they are not too drastically different in terms of setting, given that they're both vaguely medieval-inspired fantasy. But nonetheless, I will talk about it!
So, if Fallon and the cast of All the Queen's Horses wound up in the world of Call of Shadows, the first and foremost problem would be that they have nothing. Fallon is used to being a Queen, and the rest of the cast is largely nobility (or at least pretending to be). So it would be a bit jarring for the group of them to end up in a place that is not only foreign to them, but also where none of them own anything or have any power or anything. That would take some getting used to, even though no one in the cast is particularly materialistic or snobby.
If Ash and Dorian wound up in the world of ATQH, they would probably be pretty relieved, to be honest. The immediate threat of the Huntsman and his pack of wolf spirits is gone, so that would give them a break. Assuming that Dorian's magic still functioned in another world, he would still have to hide it, since magic isn't a thing in the world of ATQH, at least not anymore. But that's no big deal, since he doesn't have to use it to keep the two of them alive anymore either. So, honestly, I think that Ash and Dorian would be pretty happy on the Continent. Unless Dorian got some kind of heroic notion of going back and dethroning Lenora. But so far she hasn't actually done anything wrong to the people of the kingdom. Her only crime has been her treatment of her nephew.
I like to think that Ash and Dorian would end up staying "together" (platonically, ofc) after the end of the story, but I haven't thought that far ahead yet, to be honest. I only have vague plot points up to the beginning/middle of Book 2, and then I have no idea how the duology ends. Not yet. There's a lot I have to figure out yet, lmao.

Happy Blorbo Blursday!
Please tell me about your most self-indulgent blorbo, if you feel comfortable sharing!
Happy Blorbo Blursday! HMMM... Most self-indulgent? There are two ways I could answer this. Fluffy answer first and then the Emotional Baggage answer.
Fluffy Answer Klara -- she was literally created as a self-insert to be best friends with one of my main characters (who was desperately lacking interpersonal relationships at the time)
Since creating Klara, she has mutated to be quite different from me, but at the time? Absolutely self-indulgent fluff.
Emotional Baggage Answer This is probably going to be an odd (and slightly long) answer, but the answer is probably Valen. So some context, Valen was once part of a collaborative work I shared with someone I went to High School with, and Valen was my co-author's darling. Valen could do no wrong. Ever. (There's an in-story explanation for why this is, but Valen is designed to Always Be Correct) Everything Valen said was right and true, and almost all of the time, Valen was the mouthpiece through which the characters I wrote were scolded, belittled, or put in their places. The real issue with this is that my co-author was emotionally abusive, and this collaborative work which meant a lot to me, became the thing that my co-author used to control me. She would withhold it if I acted in way she deemed unacceptable and over time it became another vehicle for her to emotionally abuse me, with our real-life dynamics playing out again and again and again in the inter-character relationships. And with Valen created as the arbiter of truth in the world, my co-author would use him to create scenarios that just became the characters I wrote begging, apologizing, and grovelling for forgiveness over petty, imagined slights. (Which is how the co-author treated me IRL)
So now you're probably asking "How in the WORLD does this make Valen your most self-indulgent blorbo?" WELL YOU SEE, a couple months ago, I decided I was brave enough to look at the old story after shelving it for over a decade. My co-author is forever out of the picture, and I decided to see what I could salvage from the old drafts -- I'm still wading through it all to see what I can save, but that's another story.
Since I've decided to try to tackle this again, I have been re-confronted with Valen. And I took his character and smashed it, like using a greek urn for a pinata. And now I'm rebuilding Val the way that I want to. And knowing that the choices I'm making to rebuild Val would be infuriating to my co-author makes me very happy.
