okay well first of all i am assuming that's a underscore which is not on our list because i had assumed it to be not a punctuation mark.

but obviously i had to check right i mean like, living on assumptions is the number one way to not know anything so i checked and the answer is kinda interesting so lemme just say it really quick because i think maybe people would be interested

so firstly there are a few usages i would feel bad not mentioning, it's used as a diacritic in some languages (diacritic being an accent sign basically, like the little hat over the â here or the thing under the ç cedille) as well as being used in mathematics for stuff like vectors

but here's the interesting bit (to me at least) is the underscore was meant to be used for underlining things back when we had typewriters. like you'd type out the line and then retype the underscores on the same line by taking the page out and typing the underscore underneath the words!

now (though sometimes it's used in proofreading to mean that) because that's not how computer typing works, that means that the mark is fairly useless except as blank space. which i mean. isn't that kinda neat? the underscore is kind of like a relic of typewriters and it's still sticking around.

anyways yeah i am not adding it though it's not really a punctuation mark i don't think
