1,3, 4, 24 and 25 for Kyrahlise and Blade for the OCxLI OTP asks!

When I saw your ask I had to do a double-take, because I figured that you’d ask about Kyrah and Chase! But Kyrahlise and Blade are fun too! And so frustrating before they get together, lol! Now, without further adieu, here are the answers to the Romance Asks *dramatically gestures towards the answers*

1. What drew your character to their LI and vice versa?

Blade was drawn to Kyrahlise because she’s kind, hardworking, always trying to do what’s right, and keeps improving her combat abilities and magic. She also acts like she feels at ease around him and teases him. (Which gets to my headcanon that he likes it when people aren’t afraid of him and act normal around him.) 

Kyrahlise was drawn to Blade because despite all he’s done and seen, he’s still very kind and considerate. Also he’s incredibly fun to tease! He respects her abilities and knowledge, and she feels safe speaking her mind to him because he gives what she has to say due thought. What seals the deal is in Chapter 4 when he’s so angry about what happened to her. It’s been a long time since anyone has given a shit if she were safe, or wanted to protect her.

3. When they are having a fight, what is it about and how do they deal with it? 

The number one thing these two would fight about is Kyrahlise feeling like Blade is overprotective of her, and Blade feeling like she is too independent and reckless. Once Kyrah understands just how scared he is of losing her, and that he needs to know she’s safe, she’s going to take a long hard look at how she acts. She’ll agree to work on making her safety a higher priority, and communicating better before she runs off. When Blade realizes that she feels a little stifled and like he doesn’t fully trust her, I’m sure he’ll agree to reign in his protectiveness to some degree. Of course it’s something they both have to work on to find a balance, but they will eventually.

The silly thing about this argument is that she likes that he’s protective, and he likes that she’s independent and wants to tackle problems! They just both think the other takes it too far.

4. Their favorite physical feature on each other?

According to Lena, romanced!Blade loves MC’s eyes, hair, and lips (or just face in general), and we know he’s into a nice butt! I change my mind regularly as to which is his favorite, but right now I'm going to say her eyes!

Kyrahlise loves Blade’s smile! It fills her with joy to see him happy and relaxed enough to genuinely smile. She has an internal ‘got the stoic, ex-assassin to smile’ counter! Overall she thinks he’s a very beautiful and handsome man, but his smile is her favorite.

24. Is there any moment that happens between them that you know happens and just makes you melt? 

One time Kyrahlise sat on Blade’s lap briefly as he’s working to tell him something and give him a little kiss before getting up to read. (He’s a head taller than her, so she uses whatever she can to make it easier to kiss him!) But Blade doesn’t want her to go, so she’s like “fine, I’ll just read here” thinking that he’ll eventually get tired of her sitting on his lap. She severely underestimates how much he likes having her close. But he’s warm, and she feels very safe and cozy, so she falls asleep. Since he doesn’t want to wake her up, he stops working. And he’s probably having a hard time not staring at her because he thinks she’s very cute!

25. Share any headcanons about their relationship.

As soon as Blade lets her, Kyrahlise starts cutting his hair. She secretly thinks his haircut is atrocious. Though once she gives him a better haircut she realizes she played herself because now he looks even more handsome! (Kyrah’s been cutting her own hair since her mother died. Most people can’t be trusted to cut curly hair right, and she’s a touch vain about her hair.)

They trade books of poetry with each other and then talk about which ones they like and why. It’s like a little book club with just the two of them!

Blade’s office stops looking quite so bare, because Kyrahlise makes him some art to put up. If anyone dares to criticize it or make any disparaging remarks about it in his presence they get his death glare!

I finally finished Kyrahlise's MC template! It was languishing in my documents and only needed a few touches. Thanks to Lena @shepherds-of-haven for commissioning this beautiful template for us to use! And thanks again to Yuki @yuuugay for the sketch of Kyrahlise!

The quote isn't something Kyrahlise would say, it's more a philosophy she lives by.

She has two tattoos, though they are both hidden by normal clothing so I didn't include them.

The anonymous reference isn't Prihine. They mention a blade because the circumstances of that job meant she mostly used a sword (her second weapon of choice).

Yes, 'Flameheart' is a reference to Chapter 4. And it was a rough time for her.

I see all of her traits as things that can be helpful, harmful, or neutral, hence making them all just 'traits'.

Honestly I struggled to come up with weaknesses, because I realized most of hers aren't going to really affect her job.

"Why is Kyrah afraid of mangoes?" Because she's very allergic to them!

The stats are from a save I made at the beginning of Chapter 8 before fair math got nuked, and are rounded to the nearest multiple of five. (Because I wanted to match the chart!)

The relationship section is platonic relationships only. Based on the friendship stats Kyrahlise is best friends with everyone, lol!

Red's description is a lot different just because I couldn't think of another way to put their friendship and shared history concisely.

Caine isn't on the last page, but Kyrah loves him like a younger brother. She would do almost anything for that kid! This was a lot of fun and it turned out beautifully! (Apologies for no image ID in the ALT.)

An Unlikely Engagement

A little fic I wrote for Shepherds of Haven based on this Tumblr post.

Someone is surprised to find out the kind and friendly Hero of Haven is engaged to the cold and distant Commander Bronwyn. (There is a very, very light spoiler for Chapter 8. So I'm putting the preview and the Ao3 link under the cut.) Edit: I'm sorry I forgot to thank @emeraldgreaves for posting a meme in the discord server that inspired a small part of this! Thanks for the extra inspiration, Em!

“What can I do for you, Finn?” Commander Kyrahlise Niriviel watched the recruit who sat on the other side of her desk shift in their chair. She could almost taste the nervous energy rolling off of the young Mage who’d requested a meeting. About what she wasn’t sure. Apparently Finn hadn’t been forthcoming with Shery when the meeting was set up. 

They shifted again before taking a deep breath. “So I’ve been having a problem – maybe it’s more of a situation – with my…” An unmistakable sharp knock on the office door interrupted them.

“Do you mind if I take this?” Finn shook their head, though they seemed confused. A lot of recruits were surprised by her personable demeanor. She flashed a smile in thanks then projected her voice towards the door. “Yes?”

Blade opened the door before he silently strode into the room, face cool and impassive. His glance quickly moved past the person seated across from her. When his eyes found hers, warmth seeped into his gaze. His voice was tinted with gentleness when he spoke. “Kyrahlise.” The way he said her name was a hidden message of affection for her alone. It never failed to make her feel comfortable, loved, and safe. “There is a matter I need your assistance with. It’s not urgent, but it’s best if we handle it today. Are you free for lunch? My afternoon is spoken for.”

16, 30, 31! for your Booksmart MC,

14, 40, and 23 for your SoH MC!

For the Character Development Hard Mode asks. First up, Amira, my Booksmart/Hot MC from Scarlet Hollow: 16. Which does your character idealize most: happiness or success? In the past, Amira put more value in success. That's part of why she became a lawyer, and she wanted to make Vivian proud. Over time she's come to idealize happiness more. After working her ass off in law school and now working 80 hours a week with a quarter of a million in student loan debt, and her mother's death, yeah success isn't looking so great. Sadly, she feels like happiness might be a pipe dream for her. 30. What does your character find repulsive or disgusting? Ditchlings! Amira is both skeptical and fastidious, and she isn't handling the horrors well, she finds a lot of what's been going on this week repulsive. Also cockroaches, and people who are very messy eaters. Well a lot of insects really, while she can manage around them and understands their necessary ecological role, she can never get rid of that ick factor. 31. Describe a scenario in which your character feels most comfortable. Sitting outside on a nice sunny day reading a good book! It's when she's at the most peace and feels the most comfortable. For how easily she can come across as a pretentious snob, she's actually quite happy and comfortable with the simple pleasures in life. For Kyrahlise, my Shepherds of Haven MC: 14. Does your character remember names or faces easier? Kyrah's quite good with both, though she's a little better with faces. Probably because of her artistic side, she's a very visual thinker. 23. What does your character dislike in other people? Whether she likes someone or not mostly comes down to how they treat other people, and animals. So anyone who's a bully, purposely rude, cruel, very discriminatory, is mean to kids or animals, abuses their power over others, or is just generally a jerk, she really dislikes. Not that most people would realize this, she's too polite to let it really show the majority of the time. Otherwise she's pretty easy going and gets along with most people just fine. 40. How does your character treat people in service jobs? Very well. Kyrahlise is naturally a friendly and understanding person, and a lot of her jobs over the years have essentially been service jobs. So she especially has a lot of empathy for service workers. She's been a maid, bodyguard, clerk at an art supply shop, and a waitress, so she's gets how much it can suck. (Some may argue that being a bodyguard isn't a service job, but you are providing a service and I'm sure have to use a lot of customer service skills in doing it.)

The Best Proof of Love is Trust

A short introspective fic for Shepherds of Haven. After Kyrahlise wakes from the 'nightmare' at the beginning of Chapter 3, how does she answer Blades question? And how does a memory of her mother affect her decision? (Please note there are vaguely referenced suicidal thoughts.) If you would like a beautiful instrumental song to listen to while reading this, I recommend Ursa Minor (Caroline's Theme) by Tambour, it's from the album Constellations (ou comment arrêter le temps). “Has anything like this happened to you before?” Blade’s question hung in the air as Kyrahlise considered her answer. Could she trust them with her deepest secret? Would she lose this new family once they knew the truth, once they knew she was the reason Vale and everyone it in disappeared? A tendril of the past threaded its way into her thoughts, vigorously sprouting into a full memory from her childhood. She was nine and sitting on a small stool in her room while Mama stood behind her. As was part of their morning and evening routine, Mama was brushing her rose gold hair. Often it was a time when Mama would tell her a story or impart some tidbit of wisdom.

“Ahlise,” a bloom of warmth unfurled in her heart when Mama called her that special nickname, “you have so much love in you. Someday it will save people.”

“I didn't know that love can save people.” It was such a strange thing to be told, but Mama was kind and insightful so she believed the words were true even if they didn’t yet make sense.

Elegant fingers started to braid Kyrahlise’s loose curls. “It can. How yours will I can’t say.” There was a pause. Elves weren’t known to rush their speech, and Mama was no exception in that regard. “Love and hope are the most important things to keep alive in your heart. They will give you reason to push forward in these dark times our people face.” After tying off her braid with a thin strip of dyed leather, Mama kissed the crown of her head. “Put your trust in love and hope my little flower petal, and you will always find a way through whatever hardship you face.”

“I will Mama, I promise," Kyrahlise had said with all the solemnness a nine year old can muster. Though the oath of a child shouldn’t be given much weight – not when they can’t truly comprehend what they are vowing.

Aaaaaaaaaah! Omg she's so cute! I freaking love how the curls above Kyrahlise's forehead almost make a heart! You always do such a good job of making her look genuinely happy! I love it, thank you so much, Yuki! Well it's about 11pm my time as I'm writing this, but thank you for the sweet sentiment! Today was really random. Though yesterday was his birthday, and it was a lovely day. The baked potato wedges I made to go with supper were a huge hit with him, lol (He loudly said "Oh my god!" when he ate the first one! Generally the most he'll say is a quiet "this is really good", so that was a resounding success!)

I was actually trying to decide between Shery and Tallys before I finished reading your whole ask. So Tallys it is! And I agree, we need more love for the ladies! (Romance Asks)

1. What drew your character to their LI and vice versa?

I’m pretty sure Tallys thought Kyrahlise was hot, so wanted to bang her, lol! Tallys found that Kyrah was good company, relaxed and steady, kind, and thoughtful (both thoughtful of others, and insightful), which certainly helped things along. Kyrah being raised by Elves also made Tallys a little more open with her.

Kyrahlise found comfort in being around someone with a shared culture. Frankly if that hadn’t made her feel at ease so quickly with Tallys, I don’t think she would’ve been okay starting a FWB with her so soon. (Kyrah is demisexual.) Tallys’ calm demeanor, subtle wit, and intelligence, along with their shared interests, like cooking, being out in nature, and being around animals were also big draws to her.

5. How do they comfort each other when they are sad?

Kyrahlise will let Tallys vent if that’s what she needs, but the whole time she’ll stay physically close. Also hugs, lots of hugs, or hand holding! If Tallys initiates an emotional support makeout session after, well Kyrah won’t complain about it in the slightest! Tallys quietly holds Kyrahlise until she’s calmed down some. Then she’ll make her a cup of relaxing herbal tea. Kyrah isn’t much for talking when her emotions are running high, but once she’s come down some she’ll often talk about what’s bothering her. And that’s just a little easier to do with a cup of tea in her hands.

12. Do they have similar goals? If they clash, how do they deal?

They both want to live on their own terms, and adjacent to that, make the world a better place for their fellow Diminished. The possible issues come with their ideas of how to achieve those goals, especially the latter. Kyrahlise doesn’t have the negative view of Norms overall that Tallys has when the game starts. So she's happy to work with Norms to change things, whereas Tallys wouldn’t be to begin with. 

Kyrah has been nudging Tallys towards being less harsh on Norms, and seeing things with more nuance. Hopefully it’s enough to get Tallys to change, because if she stays hating them, that will be a dealbreaker for Kyrah. Indiscriminate hatred of Norms feels too much like some of the hatred Kyrahlise has endured. There’s no way she can stay in a relationship long-term with someone who holds those views, even if those views don’t personally harm her.

24. Is there any moment that happens between them that you know happens and just makes you melt?

So I’m pretty sure this moment will happen in-game, but I think about it a lot. It’s when Tallys first calls Kyrahlise “elan”. Kyrah is going to melt inside, and I will too! I’ve thought of different ways it’ll happen, but I doubt any of my ideas will be as satisfying as the real thing. Otherwise I’d probably try and write a fic about it!

Of course the moment will be especially impactful since Kyrahlise knows exactly what elan means. Plus it’s been so long since anyone has called her that. Her father called her ‘elan’ almost as much as her name. Hearing it again is like a stab in the heart, it brings up a lot of pain but it’s also so very comforting. (Her mother called her something that would translate to ‘little flower petal’ or just ‘little petal’, on account of her hair being rose gold.)

4, 37, 19, and 29 for Kyrahlise or any OC of your choice, please!! 🫡🫡✨✨

For the Character Development Hard Mode asks. 4. Has your character ever witnessed something that fundamentally changed them? If so, does anyone else know? Understandably what she saw on her 13th birthday changed her a lot. Kyrah went from a very happy, but diligent child, to being really closed off and filed with a lot of guilt and self-blame for what happened. Finding her way to the Circle in Capra helped her heal some over the years. All of the captains, Blade, Pan, Neon, and Raven know. Of course none of them know how much it changed her. Once when she was a bodyguard for a shitty noble, she caught someone sent to assassinate him. She was ordered to find out who sent the assassin. So she sucked it up and tortured them*, but it made her sick. Eventually she took a big risk and Enchanted the person to get them to talk. Luckily no one caught her. This fundamentally changed what kinds of jobs she took, and she maintained firmer boundaries after that. It also added to her guilt complex. No one knows about this incident yet. It's one of those things that she will eventually tell someone. Not that she's hiding it, more that she tries to let it lie in the past where it belongs. * Edit: She tried every non-drastic method of getting them to talk she could think of before going to torture. 19. What is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before? Answered here. I actually wrote the answer late last night/early this morning but thought I should give it a look over when I was more awake. Sorry about that! 29. What did your character dream of being or doing as a child? Did that dream come true? Also answered here. You and Brit were on the same page, lol! 37. Is your character more concerned with defending their honor, or protecting their status? While her honor is more important to her personally, she doesn't put much effort into defending it. Since it doesn't really impact others, why put a lot of work into changing someone's mind about her? Whereas she only sees status as a tool, but will protect it! Kyrahlise tries to maintain her status because of how it can affect others or her future. So she always worked hard to get good recommendations from her former employees, making it easier to get future jobs. Now she's keenly aware her status can affect the Shepherds. She always keeps that in mind on missions, and when interacting with the public, and other branches of the government.

Omg Yuki, she's so cute! I love little chibi Kyrahlise! <3 All of the chibi drawings of characters you do are freaking adorable, and I want to pinch their cheeks! I imagine she's chasing after Good Boy with Caine. Probably to keep Blade from finding out about him! (It will never stop amusing me that the dog's name is literally Good Boy! 18, 19, 29, and 41 for Kyrah for the Hard Mode OC questions ask pls!

For the Character Development Hard Mode asks. And here's where I answered 14, 23, and 40 for Kyrahlise last night (along with 16, 30, and 31 for Amira, one of my Scarlet Hollow MCs). 18. Is your character more likely to admire wisdom, or ambition in others? Between the two, Kyrahlise admires wisdom more. She's seen people's ambitions turn them into terrible people in the course of her travels. As much as she is fairly ambitious herself, wisdom is much more important to her in others and herself. 19. What is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before? After her 13th birthday, she became very slow to trust. I think if Red hadn't been gently persistent in befriending her at 14, she would've kept people at arms length for many years. There were people she met between her flower day and before joining the Circle who would've helped her, but she quietly pushed them away. Kyrah has a tendency to hide how she really feels behind being polite. While it was a good survival tactic for a long time, it's not great now. It kept her from becoming close to others during her travels. Though she's pretty honest with folks in the Shepherds due to trusting them. (Yes it's ironic that she's helping Shery with almost the same thing. But it was a very deliberate calculation in Kyrahlise's mind, never an ingrained habit. There is an impulse for her to hide her emotions, but she can choose not to.) 29. What did your character dream of being or doing as a child? Did that dream come true? As many kids do, Kyrah had a lot of dreams. Being an artist was one, as was being a scholar or teacher, she even dreamed of becoming Speaker of Vale after her father. Zori talked so much about going on adventures that she wanted to do the same. She's sold individual drawings and paintings over the years, but she wouldn't consider herself an artist. As for a scholar, she once forged academic credentials to get a job as an assistant research librarian! (The art skills came in handy for that, lol!) Given how often she's in diplomatic roles since joining the Shepherds, that's not terribly far off from being Speaker. She's certainly been on adventures, so that's adventurer-adjacent. So her dreams partly came true, just in wildly different ways than she ever could've imagined! 41. Does your character feel that they deserve to have what they want, whether it be material or abstract, or do they feel they must earn it first? Oh Kyrahlise absolutely feels like she has to earn things to deserve them! As a child she put a lot of pressure on herself to try and measure up to the Elves around her, and to live up to being the Speaker's daughter. When she got to the Circle, she worked her butt off to be the top student as a way to prove she deserved to be there. (And deserved the safety and relatively comfortable life she had there.) This stance has relaxed some over the years, but it's still what she believes about herself. She's a massive hypocrite, because she freely gives to the people she cares about and never thinks they have to earn anything from her. This is actually a large part of why she's uncomfortable with being the Hero of Haven. She doesn't think she's earned the praise she receives. Thank you so much for sending this ask, Sierra! Because I tried answering it four different times before I got sick yesterday and it always ended with me being frustrated and confused about why I couldn't answer. Well, it turns out that's because I kept starting it in the wrong place! So you actually saved me a lot of time and effort, because I haven't started this fic yet. Now when I do write it I won't be struggling because I'll be starting it from the right point!

The gist is that it's little first kiss fic. Kyrahlise and Ayla are out having fun, I don't know yet if it's just the two of them or they are out with the other Shepherds. When they decide to leave, Kyrah grabs Ayla's hand to lead her home and makes a joke about "not wanting the former guide to get lost", there's playful banter/bickering between them with some underlying tension.

At some point on the walk back to the compound Ayla is mentally like "fuck it, I'm just going for it", pushes Kyrahlise against a wall says something like "you're so hot it pisses me off" and kisses her. Kyrah's brain takes a second to catch up to what's happening, but once she's sorted it out, she's very happy about this development! It turns into an impromptu make-out session before they make it back home. (I mean it's Ayla, she's definitely not a soft and sweet first kiss kind of woman!)

Cut to the next morning and Kyrahlise wakes up, thinks she had an interesting dream for a few seconds until she registers arms around her and clothes on the ground, lol!

One of the things I have to decide is if it makes more sense/is more interesting if it's all from Kyrah's perspective. Or if the all but the last bit should be from Ayla's perspective. Either way, I just can't get the mental picture of Ayla getting fed up with not knowing where they stand and just going in for that kiss! The idea amuses me way too much, lol!

Omg, she looks sooo good! The smile! <3 Someday she will beat Blade in a sword fight, and that will be how she smiles! Actually, it was a really good choice for clothes! They look great, and it's very similar to what I picture her wearing when training and when she was a bodyguard. On her days off, she wears casual yet elegant dresses, blouses, and skirts a lot. Now that I think about it, that actually ends up being a good representation of different sides of her personality. I love her! 2. What is/was your character’s relationship with their mother like? Very loving! Kyrahlise was a mama’s girl! Telessa* even had a special nickname for her, Ahlise, that no one else used. Her mother taught her a lot, including how to use a bow, and ride ahfuri and horses. She gets her love of reading from her mother as well. When Telessa passed away it gutted her. Honestly, if Zori and the rest of the clan hadn’t been there it would’ve taken much longer for her to come back from her mother’s death. There are lots of little ways that Kyrah keeps her mother’s memory alive – keeping up with using a bow, the way she dances, her little gestures and mannerisms, how she puts her hair up, and baking bread (it’s the only thing she can bake without it ending in disaster, lol). Actually, the first part of The Best Proof of Love is Trust has a little memory of her mother that I think gives an idea of their relationship.

3. What is/was your character’s relationship with their father like? From the outside Kyrahlise didn’t seem as close to her father as her mother. Their relationship was very good, just different. Valendil* was more of the stern, proper parent, as befitting the political leader of the clan. Though she always knew he loved her very much, and he was never unfair or harsh with her. From him she gained her love of art and creating it, cooking, as well as diplomacy. While her mother was her beacon of light, her father was her rock. But even a rock can crack under the right circumstances, and he did when his wife died. This put a wedge in their relationship for a time. Not because they loved each other less, but they were both in so much pain and he couldn’t be there for her the way he once was. The relationship did heal eventually. His death on her Flower Day was another huge blow to her. As I mentioned in another ask, I don’t know how she would’ve come out of that if she hadn’t ended up at the Veiled Circle and eventually made friends there.

19. What is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before? Answered here. I love how y'all really wanted to know this about her! <3

34. Is your character more likely to keep trying a solution/method that didn’t work the first time, or immediately move on to a different solution/method? This can depend on the context. For instance, if it’s more of an academic problem Kyrah’s facing, she might try the same method more than once in case she made a small error the first time. In a social situation, if one way of handling it didn’t work she’ll drop it right away and try something else. In general she’s quick to move on to other ideas. Unless she thinks it’s possible she made a mistake, and fixing that mistake would cause the first solution to work.

44. How easy or difficult is it for your character to say “I love you?” Can they say it without meaning it? In the timeline of the game, she says it very easily! Kyrahlise has a big heart, and once she trusts someone and feels like she has a decent grasp on who they are, loves easily. This is probably a lot of why she’s so close to the other Shepherds. Telling her friends she loves them is as easy to her as breathing, and she means it fully. The only way she could say “I love you” without meaning it, is if it got her and/or others out of a really bad situation without things escalating. If somehow the only viable choices were to lie or violence, she’d choose to lie. Otherwise I don’t think she can say she loves someone without it being true. *I didn't come up with her parents names, I got it from this ask Lena answered about how MC's parents met.
