A dead rival is no fun
”YOU ARE SO ANNOYING!”
”Heh, heh.”
An umbrella and katana clashed. A pretty ordinary sight in Edo's park. Two rivals going at it with full force. Kagura of the Yorozuya and Okita Sougo of the Shinsengumi, the most infamous duo of Edo. Sometimes they were on the opposite sides, sometimes partnered-up, nevertheless people knew to stay far away from them.
Sougo had managed to piss Kagura off, though it didn't require much of an effort. She threw kicks at him, but he dodged them all. He tried to hit her, but she blocked him every time. Everything seemed to be a well choreographed dance routine. Kagura was always very vocal about killing him, never actually meaning it. Every attack aimed to hurt, but never lethally.
Kagura launched another attack, carried over by a loud battle scream. Sougo smirked and readied his katana. She jumped at him and he read her movement. To Kagura's surprise he dodged instead of blocking. Her sides were open and Sougo landed a kick on her. She dropped her umbrella from the impact and her body slammed on the ground.
Kagura grunted from the pain, cursing his name in her head. She heard him laughing. Her fists clenched and she jumped back on her feet. Sougo had that same sadistic look on his face as he always did. So annoying. Kagura's eyes studied him from a distance, noticing something purple on his hand. Her eyes widened slightly and she gritted her teeth.
”Hey bastard! That's mine, yes!” Kagura shouted.
Sougo swung Kagura's umbrella in his hand, toying with it to make her more angry. ”Oh, not anymore China,” he said casually. ”Finders keepers.”
Kagura felt furious, there was no way she would let him have her umbrella. Sougo made the mistake of turning his back to Kagura. He thought he had a second to mock her verbally before she would attack him again. He thought wrong. Kagura didn't make a sound, she just charged at him.
”I wonder what I'll do with this, maybe I sell it or-,” he managed to say before Kagura's surprise kick hit his back. He hissed and crashed down on his stomach. She grinned victoriously and stomped one foot on his back. She reached to pick her umbrella up and aimed it at his head.
”Hah! The great Gura-san has won again! Admit your defeat Sadist!” Kagura gloated. His answer was silence. ”Oh...did you finally drop dead bastard?”
Still no answer.
”Hey! Sadist?”
She jumped down from him. Kagura felt nervous for some reason. This wouldn't be the first time he had fooled her, but this time something felt wrong. Kagura kneeled next to his head. She poked his shoulder. ”Sadist?” Kagura asked, but no answer.
”Stop playing dead or I'll kill you,” Kagura said. She groaned and rolled Sougo on his back. Kagura gasped from the sight. There was a bleeding wound on his forehead. Then she saw a sharp rock on the ground, tip of it bloody. ”Oh no, not again.”
Kagura realized that she had pushed his head to the rock. Did I kill him? She thought to herself, brows furrowed and eyes filled with regret. This wasn't the first time Kagura had accidentally killed her pet...not that he was her pet, or hers to at all. Still he was sort of her play-mate. ”Dammit,” Kagura hissed and grabbed Sougo by his jacket. She shook him gently, calling his name (not his real name obviously). ”Sadist! Wake up!”
Someone ran next to Kagura. ”What happened here?” he asked. Kagura looked at the strange man.
”He, uh, I, umm...” she stuttered.
”I'm a doctor, let me help,” the man said and moved to examine Sougo. Kagura observed his actions; he checked his breathing, the wound, his pulse. She glanced at Sougo every now and then. His eyes were shut close, the bleeding wound smudging his forehead entirely. He still looked quite peaceful, like he was sleeping.
The doctor turned to Kagura. ”Well, your friend here has a wound, but the bleeding has already clotted quite nicely. There's only a little bit of blood coming out. He is unconscious and needs to rest. I would be more than happy to help you to take him somewhere peaceful.”
Here's what Kagura heard: ”Well...BLOOD...REST...PEACEFUL...”
Kagura glared at the doctor in utter horror. ”I KILLED HIM?” she yelled. The doctor went speechless for a second. Kagura couldn't believe herself, she didn't mean to hurt him.
The doctor came back to his senses and tried to calm the shaken girl. ”No, no. He's not dead, only unconscious.”
”That's even worse, yes?” Kagura asked and hastily pushed the doctor out of her way. ”I'll save him!”
”Bu-but,” the doctor mumbled on the ground. Kagura slipped one hand under Sougo's back and the other one under his knees. She used her monstrous strength to pick the passed out captain from the ground. The doctor's jaw dropped. Sougo was much taller and heavier than Kagura, but she still hoisted him up.
”Thank you mr. doctor!” she said, voice not affected by holding a grown man with her arms. Then she ran towards the Shinsengumi compound. The doctor got up and dusted his clothes a bit. He stared at the strange sight of a girl carrying a man.
”Hey! He's just unconscious, he's going to be fine!!!” the doctor shouted after them, but Kagura was already too far away to hear. The man thought is was best to follow them, just in case.
Kagura ran with full speed across the streets. She had Sougo in her arms, jiggling with her steps, remaining unconscious. Maybe it was better that way...being carried bridal style by a woman might be a blow to certain someone's ego.
Gintoki and Shinpachi were taking a walk as well. ”Gin-san, why did you buy so many JUMPs? They are the same copy after all,” Shinpachi said.
”Yare, yare Shinpachi...it's my new side business,” Gintoki said with a smug smile. ”I'm going to buy a lot of JUMPs in mint conditions, and then I'll sell them to collectors, mh.”
Shinpachi sighed. ”Gin-san...JUMPs aren't that rare...it could take years before-”
”Silence! You're just jealous Patsuan,” Gintoki said confidently. Shinpachi rolled his glasses, I mean eyes, I mean glasses rolled their Shinpachi and left the matter at that. Then they saw a red beast running with a cloud of dust after it. ”HUUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAHHHHH-AARUUUUU!” the beast howled as it passed them.
Gintoki and Shinpachi stopped walking. ”Gin-san?”
”Shinpachi?”
”Was that...Kagura?”
”No.”
”Carrying...”
”No.”
”Okita-san?”
”No, absolutely not. Let's go home Pachi-boy.”
*
*
”Hang in there sadist!” Kagura shouted as they entered the Shinsengumi compound. All the officers that saw them froze on their spots, mouths gaped open, eyes even wider. Kagura carried Sougo inside the quarters and saw Kondo and Hijikata drinking some mayonnaise and banana flavoured tea. ”Mayora! Gorilla-stalker!”
Hijikata and Kondo turned to look at her and spat their drinks like fire-hydrates. Kagura leaped over to them, huffing and puffing from all the running. ”Help me! I accidentally killed the Sadist!”
Both men got up and hurried to Kagura's aid. Hijikata was the first to notice the blood on Sougo. ”What happened?” he asked with ever growing worry. ”What do you mean you killed him?”
”No, he's not dead!” a panting man said. Kondo and Hijikata glanced at the man who was walking to them. ”I tried to explain to her, he's only unconscious.”
”And who are you?” Hijikata asked.
”It's not important. I'm a doctor and I saw these two youngsters at the park,” the man said. ”I checked it, his wound isn't serious.”
Kondo and Hijikata felt great relief, but Kagura was confused. She turned around with Sougo. ”Wh-what? Why didn't you tell me-aru?”
”I did tell you, I think you went into shock, actually you still are,” the doctor said.
”You did good China-girl, you brought Sougo back home,” Kondo said and patted her head. Kagura's body trembled a little, sweat glistening on her forehead. ”Ma, you must be exhausted.”
”She's clearly in shock, paleness, shaking and her behaviour is confusing. All of those are symptoms of a shock.”
Hijikata felt her forehead with his hand. ”It's coldsweat,” he said. Kagura looked at all three men talking around her. Then her eyes dropped to Sougo. She felt really happy that she hadn't killed him, a dead rival wasn't as fun as a breathing one.
”So he just needs rest?”
”That's right. And so does her.”
”Okay, do you mind patching up his wound doc?” Hijikata asked.
”I'm happy to be of service.”
Hijikata turned to Kagura, he saw her gazing Sougo, there was something in her eyes, a feeling Hijikata recognized. He had to slap himself mentally to focus on Sougo. ”Alright, I'll take him off your hands, now.”
Kagura's eyes darted at him. ”NO!” she said and took a step back. ”No.”
The doctor and Hijikata shared a look. Kondo walked next to Kagura. Her hands digged into Sougo's clothing, it was like she was protecting him, not wanting to let go. ”Kagura-chan, how about you take Sougo here to his room, he needs to rest,” Kondo said calmly. Kagura looked at Kondo, then Sougo and back at Kondo. She nodded a couple of times. Kondo patted her back and guided her to the right direction.
An hour later at Sougo's room, he had been placed to rest on his futon. His forehead was patched up by the doctor and everything seemed to be fine. Kagura was sitting against a wall, curled up and shaking. Hijikata brought her a blanket. The doctor had advised them to keep her warm and make sure that she gets some sleep.
Hijikata lowered himself to Kagura's level. ”Are you okay?” he asked, she nodded slowly and forced a small smile on her face. Kondo placed a hand on Hijikata's shoulder.
”Let's go Toshi.” Hijikata got up and the two men left. Kagura snuggled better with blanket, feeling a little sleepy. So she gave in and closed her eyes.
*
*
A few hours later, Kagura woke up. It was already pretty late, the only source of light was a small lantern on the floor. It must be night already, she thought. It took a moment for Kagura to realize where she was and why she was there. It all came back to her as her eyes landed on Sougo. He was still sleeping.
Kagura left her blanket and quietly crawled closer to her sleeping rival. She kneeled next to him and watched his chest heaving peacefully. She felt glad that she didn't kill him, but she never wanted to injure him, not like this. It was an accident, but so were those other times I hurt something that was important to me. WAIT, did I just think that Sadist here is important to me? Kagura thought to herself.
Maybe he is, she admitted. The thought of saying it to him made her heart flutter for some reason. Kagura was sure that he would laugh her off if she would tell him anything.
Kagura decided to leave, to go home. Before that, she had something important to do. Kagura leaned closer to Sougo's ear. ”I'm sorry,” she whispered. Then she backed away to leave.
A hand grabbed her hand. Kagura gasped from surprise. ”China?”
Sougo's eyes were open, he was looking at her. Kagura pulled her hand away from his grip. He was quiet, he didn't resist her action. ”Oh, I didn't know you were awake...”
Sougo hummed. ”I woke up a moment ago, then your knees stomping against the floor took care of the rest.”
”I didn't stomp!”
Sougo hushed her by pressing his finger on his lips. ”Don't yell dummy, it's night-time,” he said. Kagura pressed her lips together and looked away from him. Everything he said felt like he hated her, for what she did to him.
Sougo sat up, gently pressing his forehead. Kagura observed him secretly. He hissed a bit when his hand found the wound. Kagura's head popped up. ”Are you okay?” she asked hastily. Sougo glanced at her, eyes a bit confused.
He reached his hand to touch her forehead. ”Are you sick?” he asked.
”No...”
Sougo pulled his hand back. ”Then why are you being so weird?”
”Huh? Don't you remember?”
Sougo scratched his head and shook his head. Kagura swallowed nervously, she wanted to tell him. ”I-I thought I killed you...”
”What?” Sougo asked, eyebrows rising.
”I mean...I pushed you and you hit your head,” she explained, avoiding his piercing sight. ”Then a doctor told me that you were dead, or so I heard...and then I carried you-”
”Carried me? You?” Kagura's made a quick eye-contact with him. Sougo was in between amused and embarrassed, it was hard to tell.
”Yeah, I carried you from the park to here and then the doctor followed and then you weren't dead, then Mayora tried to take you away and then you were all bloody and then-” heavy, almost hysterical panting drowned her words. Kagura had to stop talking as she couldn't breath properly. She dropped her head on her lap. Sougo reacted quickly and he shifted closer to her.
”Hey, hey. Calm down China,” Sougo said calmly. He raised his hand to pat her back, after a second of hesitation he touched her. Kagura didn't even notice at first when he comforted her. She tried to calm her breathing. It became very clear for her how afraid she really had been at that moment. ”Are you okay?”
Kagura exhaled deeply and raised her head up, only to see Sougo up close, very close. Their faces were inches apart, the sensation making her heart race. ”Uh, yeah...” she said quietly and sat back up, covering her warm cheeks with her hands.
Sougo was still looking at her. ”What was that China?” he was too curious to pretend nothing happened.
”I-uh...”
”You're still shaking. Were you that worried about me?”
Kagura took another deep breath, she couldn't talk her way out of this one. ”Yeah...I though I had accidentally killed you...” Sougo tilted his head a bit. Was this the same obnoxious girl he knew? She was almost...adorable, he thought.
”I didn't mean to-”
”Stop it.”
Kagura jumped a bit, he sounded angry. ”Stop it...don't be stupid.”
”Stupid?”
”Yeah. We have fought many times before. I know you wouldn't do anything...you know, too serious,” Sougo said, his voice quieting down a bit.
Kagura's eyes brightened up a little. ”You do? How-aru?”
Sougo turned his face to his side. He mumbled something, but she couldn't even get one word clear. ”Did you say something?” she asked.
Sougo sighed, looking very frustrated. ”I SAID that I wouldn't ever hurt you seriously. That's how I know you wouldn't either.”
Kagura's heart jumped. Why it made her feel so giddy when he said that, she wondered. Sougo rubbed his forehead a little. Kagura recognized his facial expression, it was pain. ”What's wrong?” she asked and leaned her whole body closer to him.
Their arms brushed a bit, making them both twitch a little. ”It's my head, just a little headache,” Sougo said.
”I know what to do,” Kagura said cheerfully. She backed away from him and crawled at the end of his futon. His eyes followed her every movement. Kagura removed his pillow and kneeled on the spot. ”Come here.”
Sougo frowned his brows. What was China girl thinking, he though. Kagura patted her lap twice. ”Get here dummy, I'll help you, yes,” Kagura said. Sougo moved closer to her and she patted her lap again. Sougo pointed at her lap with his finger and then himself. Kagura nodded and smiled.
Sougo dragged himself very close to her and softly and a little nervously laid his head on her lap. She felt softer than he had expected. As it was a reflex, his whole body relaxed. Last time he felt that blissfully calm was when his sister held him like this. Their position felt very intimate for him, he wouldn't lay his head to just anyone's lap.
Kagura looked down at Sougo, his eyes closed and face completely relaxed. She hummed quietly, this was very intimate for her as well. Kagura knew her mother had done this for Kamui and Umibouzu. For her it was a gentle affection of love...
Kagura stroked his head, feeling his soft flaxen hair tickle her nicely. She would have expected his hair to be rough and slimy, but no, smooth and clean all the way. Kagura sort of pulled his hair back. She traced her fingers gently from front to back, carefully avoiding his forehead.
Sougo let out a loud breath of satisfaction. His eyes popped open. Their eyes locked. Kagura was smiling at him, making him blush. It wasn't like him to show his emotions so openly. Sougo tried to escape, but she kept him in place.
”Don't move,” Kagura said to him, voice soft, eyes softer. Sougo pulled his blanket up to his chin. Feeling this vulnerable around someone felt scary...but at the same time, it felt good. Kagura ran her fingers on his cheeks, barely touching him. Sougo grabbed her hands immediately.
”China, you're freezing,” he said. Kagura shrugged and glanced at her blanket on the floor.
”It's a little chilly here...doesn't the Shinsengumi have enough funds to keep the place warm?” Kagura teased. Sougo snorted and let go of her hands. ”Hold on Sadist,” she said and prepared to fetch her thin blanket.
”Wait,” Sougo said firmly. Kagura halted her movement at his word. ”Uh...China.”
”Mmh?”
Sougo felt his face burning from the thought he had. He tried to talk himself out of it in his head, a futile effort. His brain wasn't the one giving orders at the moment, it was his heart. Sougo grabbed his blanket with one hand and pulled it partly off him. She looked at him intensely. Sougo almost pulled the covers back and planned to brush the whole thing off as a joke. But he didn't.
”Come here.”
Kagura's eyes widened, heart racing faster than before. ”W-what?”
”You're cold...and it's warm here. That's all,” he muttered, voice not even close to casual, almost sweet actually. Kagura smiled at his bold suggestion.
”O-okay.”
Sougo swallowed. Okay, get yourself together, this isn't like that, it's only practical, he convinced to himself. Kagura motioned him to lift his head. She replaced her lap with his pillow. Sougo didn't know where to direct his eyes. If he stared at her, it would be too weird. If he looked away, it would be too weird. He felt ridiculous.
Kagura wasn't cool as cucumber herself either. Heart beating out of her chest, cheeks burning hotter than the sun. I'll be there for just a couple of seconds, to warm myself up, uh-huh, she thought to herself. Sougo got up for a second and Kagura sat right next to him. To her surprise he began to strip. He took his jacket off, then his vest, and then his cravat.
”Oi! What are you up to?” Kagura asked, ready to jump off the futon.
Sougo side-eyed her. ”I don't want to sleep with my entire uniform on,” he said casually (mentally face-palming himself a thousand times for being so stupid. He wasn't undressing for her, but it seemed to her like he was). Kagura had her black pants, red cheongsam and a light pink top underneath. She turned her back to him and took off her cheongsam, it was a pain to sleep in it. That appeared to be the moment Kagura decided to sleep next to him.
Sougo left his pants on for obvious reasons, he also left his white shirt on, but opened up some of the buttons. Sougo turned to face her. ”You know China, I  didn't-” he almost choked on his spit as he saw Kagura. She had removed her hair ornaments, letting her shoulder-length hair run wild. She had black pants a teeny tiny top on her.
Kagura placed her hands awkwardly on her chest. Did she look so ridiculous in his eyes, she wondered. Sougo pulled himself together and tried to ignore her appearance. ”Alright then,” he said.
Sougo laid on the bed, giving her half of the space and half of the pillow. Kagura laid next to him, arms and legs almost touching with his. Both had a hard time breathing normally, weird right? Sougo turned to his side and pulled the blanket over them. Their eyes met briefly, making the situation somewhat tingling.
Kagura turned to her side, her back facing him. ”Don't try anything funny, yes,” Kagura said. Sougo's default answer would have been ”No worries China. I wouldn't touch you even with a foot long pole.” But no, he didn't say that. That would have been a lie, he had a growing desire to touch her. It wasn't a sexual desire, it was actually an emotional desire to feel her closer to him.
”I won't,” he said, voice as neutral as possible, but silently cursing himself for being a wuss.
”Yup, good night Sadist.”
”Night China.”
The little lantern's light was very dim. It gave the room an orange light. Kagura was used sleep in total darkness. It was a little harder to fall asleep with a light on. Also, it might have had some effect, that she had a man next to her, Okita freaking Sougo was sleeping next to her.
It was hard to tell, but maybe a half an hour later Kagura was still wide awake. She was still freezing and it kept her up. Kagura pulled the cover up to her neck and she shivered a little. ”Are you still freezing?” Sougo asked quietly.
Kagura turned to look at him, his eyes were as awake as hers. ”Yeah, sorry if I'm keeping you up,” she said. Kagura jumped as Sougo’s hand landed on her shoulder. She felt him pulling her, and she let him. Sougo pulled Kagura on her back and then to lay on her other side, now she was facing him.
Sougo moved his hand over to hers. Kagura's hands were curled up against her chest. His hands felt warm. ”I'll warm you up,” Sougo said and motioned her to come closer. Kagura felt like her heart was about to burst out of her chest. He pressed both of her hands against his chest. Sougo covered her hands with both of his. He warmed up her hands, but more than that he warmed up her heart.
Kagura stared into his crimson eyes, unable to look anywhere else. His orbs were glued to hers as well. She smiled bashfully as Sougo stroked her hands. ”Getting any warmer?” he asked.
”Uh-huh, but...” she said.
”But what?”
”My legs are still a little cold.”
”Wrap them around mine,” he said without thinking about it.
”O-okay,” she said and tangled her legs with him.
The silence returned between them. Only glances were shared and small innocent touches.
”Do you feel weird?” Kagura asked. She was being the brave one to address the situation first.
”A little yeah,” he admitted.
”...Do you want to stop?”
”...no...”
”Me either-aru.”
Those were the last words exchanged that night. The warmness of the bed they shared did it's job. Both Sougo and Kagura began to drift asleep, with idiotic smiles plastered on their faces.
*
*
The next morning an angry resident barged into the Shinsengumi compound. Hijikata was the first one to see the silver-haired samurai, followed by walking glasses. ”WHERE THE HELL IS OUR KAGURA?”
”Good morning to you too,” Hijikata grunted.
Gintoki walked to the vice-commander and yanked his jacket. ”Don't you good morning me, where's Kagura?” he asked. ”I know that sadistic bastard has tricked her to come here.”
Hijikata pushed Gintoki away, face annoyed to the max. ”Oi! Would you calm down,” Hijikata hissed. ”She's here.”
Gintoki and Glasseschi were shocked, they were only almost certain that Kagura was there. ”She is?” Gintoki asked.
Hijikata lit up a cigarette and explained the whole thing from beginning to end. ”...after I turned on the lantern and checked the room for the last time, both were sound to sleep, SEPERATELY.”
Gintoki and Shinpachi sighed from relief. ”Come, I'll take you to her,” Hijikata said. Later he would regret doing so.
Hijikata slid Sougo's door open and slammed it close right away. Gintoki frowned his brows. ”What's wrong?” he asked.
Hijikata laughed nervously. ”O-oh, silly me. Wrong room!” he said. Gintoki and the person made of glass weren't buying Hijikata's act.
”Move!” Gintoki said and Hijikata stepped away. The angry samurai yanked the door open. Gintoki saw his life flashing by him. He was so dead. Umibouzu was personally going to take care of that.
Glassman pushed the stunned Gintoki out of his way. He walked into the room. ”What are you freaking about Gin-san, It's only Okita-san and OHMYGOD!”
The situation seemed far worse than it actually was. Sougo's shirt was partly open and Kagura's dress was thrown next to the bed. They were sleeping face to face. Her head was burrowed against his chest. His left hand was supporting and holding her head. The other hand was on her lower back, keeping her closer to him. Kagura had even thrown her other leg over his hip. They looked like two lovers snuggled up.
”God dammit Hijikata! How could you let this happen?” Gintoki roared and shook the officer by his shoulders. The glasses had already left the building, the sight was too much for a love-sick virgin. Kagura woke up to Gintoki's screaming.
”Shit...” she mumbled.
”Pretend you don't hear them,” Sougo whispered, apparently he had woken up too. To Gintoki's further horror Sougo pulled the blanket over his and Kagura's heads. The samurai heard a familiar girly giggle sound come under the blanket.
”You're so dead Souichiro-kun! Kagura! Stop torturing me!” Gintoki shout-cried, which earned him a sweet giggle and a malicious chuckle from under the covers.
*
*
Meanwhile in space. Umibouzu felt a strange feeling in his gut. A striking, ominous pain. ”What's wrong baldie?” A cheerful voice asked.
”Oh, Kamui. I think something terrible has happened to Kagura, I can feel it.”
Kamui laughed. ”Stop being crazy old man. It's not like Kagura got a boyfriend or anything, right?”

OkiKagu Week 2018: Day 1 - Red
Author’s Notes: Drabbles because school, work, and everything in life is complicated. Most likely I will not post daily, but I’ll try to get it done.
Kagura thought she would never see the day when Sougo’s hair would be the same color as hers.
It wasn’t the exact color, but the sight got to her.
She attempted to touch it, only her hand to be slapped away.
“I said I was fine. Leave it alone.” He sighed, stammering onto the chair.
“But you’re not! Let me see it!” She forced her way on to him, holding his face with both hands.
He fidgeted until Kagura applied pressure to his cheek, knowing she’d break his skull if he didn’t cooperate.
The cut was deep.
The blow shaved away half of his eyebrow and bangs, dying a quarter of his blond hair to a dark red.
“I told you, I—” He looked up seeing the melancholy written all over her face. He softened a little, pulling her in to embrace.
Kagura clutched his vest holding back tears, “You idiot.”

OKIKAGU WEEK 2018 DAY 5: Death.
He gave her a pink rose, similar to the ones he prepared for her 'supposed' funeral.
"But red is my color sadist you know that" she retorted.
"Red is blood and we both have too much of those already. Plus its cliche. Plus its my color too so you dont get to claim it as yours"
"Till death do you part" announced the priest. Sougo stole a glance at Kagura and she smirked and said "he meant your death" so Sougo knocked her on her head and then haul her for a deep kiss.
They both knew they were the death of each other.

Day two: Unrequited Love
Her feelings
It felt like she knows him since the start because they never needed words to understand each other. Kagura remembers how they met under the cherry blossoms tree, and how they started to brawl on the grass expanse for no reasons. They didn’t need reasons to fight each other either, everything is natural, fluid and absolutely logical.
They fought together a lot, her and Sadist. At this time, she was only fourteen, and she likes his company because he’s insanely strong for a human, and he’s willing to be her sparring partner. Even if cruel words, and insults come along with the mess; she’s fine. The funniest moments she lived, it’s with him.
She notices how much he mattered to her only when he leaves for Bushu. She has always been emotional, of course, but she almost wanted to cry back then. She doesn’t, though, they are not weak, the biggest battle is approaching so they just promise.
She is not supposed to lose against anyone, but him, ever again. And so is he.
Kagura remembers his words, she grows, and she feels like he’s defeating her every time. It’s not a bad feeling or a good feeling, but she keeps his rare smiles and grins into her memory for her to hold on them when night comes. She doesn’t tell anyone, but at fifteenth, Kagura is in love.
Her dreams
She doesn’t see what’s wrong with loving him. Of course, she’s prideful, and she doesn’t want him— or anyone— to learn about her secret garden, but she knows he’s not a bad a guy deep inside, and perhaps he can even be sweet. He’s always sweet when he’s thinking of his late sister, and when she learns about his story Kagura understands that they’re closer than what she initially thought.
Maybe, she thinks, maybe they will be together one day; as in together together. She doesn’t mind keeping their rivalry; however, she wants intimate moments as well. She’s fine with him, how he acts, what an idiot sadistic prick he is, and that he never speaks a lot. He shows, but doesn’t speak, and it’s fine too.
Her stomach feels all too funny. Kagura wishes for a family, and she thinks the Sadist just might be good as a father. Would he be loving? She wonders, would he be a caring kind? Or perhaps, slightly tsundere?
When Gin-chan and Shinpachi ask her why she’s smiling all alone, and so suddenly, Kagura doesn’t explain. She says men are blind idiots.
Them, growing
She waits for when they’re more mature and ready. Her body shows that she’s still a brat at fifteen, and she wouldn’t be able to bear any children at her age anyway; lot of time is ahead for her to enjoy their childish rivalry. As years pass on the Earth— it always go quickly, because really, the Yorozuya always have awesome adventures— she grows.
She’s now a woman, or so everyone deems her to be now. Admiringly, Kagura is beautiful, and as womanly as she wished for. Maybe she just takes after Mami, because she’s got the same model’s body, and a face to be swooned over; long lashes, chiselled face, red lips, and hypnotizing azure eyes. Now, she wants to be noticed by him.
He isn’t much taller than her, but he’s even handsomer than before. His baby-angelic face had left for a manlier Sadist with his hair growing longer. She likes men with long hair so Kagura just likes him even more.
Him, not a prince
She knows Okita is imperfect, and a sadist. The prince of sadists. It doesn’t matter to her when he plays with other women, because Kagura is confident that they don’t mean anything to him and that they never go further than SM plays. He just likes inflicting pain. It doesn’t surprise her when she catches her with a willing M on Edo street. When it happens Okita makes fun of her singleness, she scoffs, sticks her tongue, and then leave them.
She doesn’t need to worry, because if he could have such deep feelings of attachment for Mitsuba or the Gorilla; why would he spoil his first time, and his body with someone meaningless? Kagura nods to herself. She goes to a girl’s shop and buys a pretty Qipao for her to enjoy. She’ll make him see.
When they fight, she knows he’s distracted over her curves. Of course, because they’re not as discreet as before, and she loves feeling pretty to his eyes. She wonders if she should make any moves soon; since he doesn’t make any either. They just fight, sometime eat or discuss together, and separate.
She’s not very patient, so she decides to take the first time when the right opportunity show up.
Her, a rival
Kagura walks onto the streets of Yoshiwara, as she wants to ask Tsukky about her plan to make Okita Sougo definitely grovel at her feet. And maybe proposing, too.
It’s a coincidence when she meets him and a girl entering a hotel. He doesn’t notice, probably because he’s too into ‘it’— the woman with him is really beautiful. She has long wavy honey hair, her eyes are golden, and she wears an equally pretty dark kimono. She seems very sweet, and delicate.
Okita laughs and smiles at her, but not like what he does with Kagura. He looks glad, maybe excited. They enter the hotel, and Kagura is still frozen because she doesn’t expect this to happen in her plan, but she tries to be positive. It may be a woman, an M, since Okita is also a healthy and hormonal man he could be tempted with a pretty girl. It doesn’t mean she have no more chances with him.
The girl is called Miki Sugawara. They met when he saved her from some perverts in the streets, and it’s a coincidence but they have the same preference on sex. Okita says he might be serious this time, because the girl understands him and his desires, and that they have a good feeling together. Besides, he says and grins, she’s more elegant and pretty than any other woman he knows.
Kagura stays silent as he makes fun of her, but the joke is not funny anymore.
She wonders if he only sees her as a rival, and that maybe, when he’s distracted over her body it’s only because she might be challenging in bed, and nothing else. She could only blame herself for reading too much into their bond, but she feels betrayed. She tries to keep the good face still; it won’t do her good to cry in front of him when all hopes are terminated.
“You know, she’s different. She’s an M, but she’s not clingy. She knows when I want to have fun, and when I’m not so I think she’s my ideal wife; or something. I don’t believe in love, but I believe that I hold some affections for her.” He says, and looks at her lost face. “What? Are you jealous because you’re still single China?”
“I’m not!” She argues and gets up. “The Queen of Kabuki-Cho can have anyone; whadd’ya think? It’s just that, well, I’m not like you.”
“What, are you doing to wait for the ‘right one’? You do realize that the perfect prince doesn’t exist.”
“Yes, I know,” she turns her back and bits back a tear, a hesitation. “My perfect prince or whatever, doesn’t exist. Gin-chan’s gonna be worried if I don’t go home. Ja—ne, Sadist!”
Her, disappointed
When she comes to the Yozoruya she’s already spilling all the tears she held down until now. Shinpachi and Gin-chan panick, of course, because she doesn’t cry this much at sixteen. She’s become a fine and a big girl now, but it doesn’t mean she has no weaknesses.
She cries, cries, until there’s no water left to cry. Gintoki and Shinpachi exchange a knowing glance, there may be idiot men in Kagura’s peripheral, but the only one they know is a certain officer. They noticed she has feelings for him, it becomes very obvious with her big grin every time she sees him, and they know it has to do with him if she comes so devastated.
“What’s wrong?” Gintoki pats her head as she trembles on his lap. It’s late night, but he’s ready to hear what happened.
“H-He’s an idiot, Gin-chan! He’s a damned idiot! I-I-I thought we c-could, no, that we w-were something but it’s all wrong. It’s unfair! Why am I the only one in love? Why am I the only one to feel the pain?” He shouts, grips at his kimono. “Never! He’s never seen me like I see him. I’ve been the only one to love, I feel like an idiot.”
“Well, well,” Gintoki sighs. “What should we do Shinpachi? The man must be blind to not fall for our Kagura-chan right?”
“Right, Kagura-chan, he’s an idiot. A big idiot. It’s okay to cry; there’s plenty of other boys in the world! This one doesn’t deserve you.” Shinpachi tries to hold down his hate; because his little sister is crying and in such a state— because of one idiot.
The biggest of all idiots.
“B-But I love him; Gin-chan, Shinpachi, it hurts to not be loved back.” She tries to muffle her hiccups but in the end, she gives up and cries for the night.
When she falls asleep, Gintoki and Shinpachi swear together to beat down the officer the morrow.
Her name
When she wakes up, her eyes are all puffy. She feels dead and tired, but she gets up nonetheless, and tries to think in the solitude of her close; of what to do now. She lost her man yesterday, but it wasn’t the end of her life, and with all the willpower of the world, she tries to think of plans. Maybe, she thinks, she should focus on her career.
Seeing space, fighting aliens of all kind: this should leave her enough time to recuperate from him, and for the scars to be healed. After all, it’s also her childhood dream to follow her father’s steps, and she’s old enough to go and see the wonders of galaxies. She doesn’t want to feel like it’s because of her heartbreak, but it is, and it would be lying to say the contrary. It’s fine, she guesses, to be weak at this kind of times.
Kagura. It’s a prestigious name to be of the Ka— family. She’s born from Kouka, and Kankou, she doesn’t have anything to be complexed about. She’s young, powerful, kind, and pretty so she doesn’t have to envy this Miki.
There are plenty of fishes in the sea, especially in space. She lies to herself, because she knows it doesn’t matter if there are other males in the whole universe; when she wants one especially. An unreachable man, she abandons her ideas with him. They don’t belong together, she understands, and he wants another woman than her so she can’t do anything, but accept.
She tells her closest friends, and Earth family, about her plan. Becoming the best alien hunter there is in the universe; since she’s Kagura. Gin-chan and Shinpachi don’t agree at first because it’s too brisk, and they know why she wants to leave so fast. She convinces them by promising to send them a lot of letters, and that she will come back.
Kagura prepares her bags— there aren’t many— and knows where to start.
She leaves in two days, and tomorrow is going to be her party before she goes up to play with the stars. Anego and everyone plan a big party, but Kagura refuses. She says she wants something less big, and just want to spend fun times before leaving.
Party would mean seeing Okita off, and she doesn’t know if she could take it; if she were to be honest.
Her love, to them
It was a fun day all thorough, everyone is smiling and don’t betray their true feelings. They laugh, they drink, they go to the attraction park, to Yoshiwara and to the pool. Kagura feels like it’s the best day ever, and she won’t be there anymore by tomorrow’s morning. She’s suddenly nostalgic, all these years living on the Earth sure are fun. It’s her favourite, little blue planet, and it’s such a shame she leaves because of one single idiot there.
Love is powerful, indeed.
On the night, they sing songs together at the karaoke. Gin-chan and Shinpachi are grinning with her because it’s not a farewell. It’s …A leave of absence, but she will definitely come back when she would be a recognized alien hunter, as well as when she’ll be able to face a married Sadist.
It’s not ‘Sadist’ anymore, because he’s not hers. Never been hers. He’s Okita, a friend, an ally, and now a regret.
She tries not to think too much of him, or she’ll cry again, and focus back to her family and friends. She’ll remember forever this day.
The morrow, she’s up at six of the morning with all her affairs and Sadaharu, her loyal pet. Everyone but the Shinsengumi’s there for the goodbyes, at the Terminal, she looks brilliant if she believes Gin-chan’s words. They hug one last time— before long— and she goes up on the spaceship with a big grin.
She looks through the windows as Edo becomes smaller, and smaller, until becoming nothing but a stain of colour in the picture. Here is it. She’s really leaving the Earth, her family, her everything, for a new start. She’ll surely learn a lot and gains more experiences in life before she comes back.
She’s saying her goodbye to the big blue planet and wishes for everyone to be well when she returns.
His (un)doubt
Okita thinks he should apologize to China. A week already since they spared last because he wants to deepen his relationship with Miki. They spend the time together, from Edo’s sights and restaurants to shady love hotels together and he feels good. Of course, a bit guilty too because China might just break a building or two if they don’t fight out all of their frustration.
When he comes to the park, at their bench in the afternoon he’s surprised she’s not here. It’s weird because he knows well her routine, and she’s always there— not for him, but sometimes she meets her other friends there or goes to buy Sukonbu. Instead, the wooden door is here and very much empty.
He sighs and comes back to the compound, maybe is she in a request with Danna and Megane. He’ll apologize later. It’s not like China wouldn’t forgive him just because he gave more attention to another girl; they are not anything like that.
He’s back at the compound but turns out Kondo-san is missing, and it’s up to him and Hijikata to go find him. The man’s probably at Boss Lady’s house anyway, so it’s not really a hard task to do. When they arrive, Danna and Megane are beating the gorilla already— probably on Boss Lady’s demand.
“Oi Danna, it’s not that, but we have to recuperate him.” It may be him, but as soon as his words leave his mouth it’s as if the mood tensed. He shrugs it off.
“You should jail him, it’s not our fault if he stalks this gorilla—Ouch! All the time!”
“We can’t do that Danna,” he deadpans, “he’s our chief.” Okita looks around, no red dress in his sight. “Is China not with you? I have to talk to her.”
“Kagura’s gone,” Danna replies dryly, and Okita wonders why he’s suddenly so sour. Men do not have periods. By gone, he doesn’t really understand, is she gone off to a mission? Vacation? Something else?
Kondo-san wakes up and wonders too, “I didn’t hear of the Princess going to any travel, did she visit her family? They’ve made up after all.”
“Kagura-chan is gone for a long time. She left to become an alien hunter a week ago, we don’t know when she will ever come back.”
Her, not here
He learned the news hours ago, but he’s still shocked that his rival’s gone so suddenly. He knows about her dreams, and how she wants to chase aliens in space, but it’s just so unexpected now. But more importantly, there’s something else to this. She didn’t inform him.
She leaves without telling him beforehand; China?
Okita’s not sure on why, or if she just doesn’t care— doesn’t want to bother him? It doesn’t fit her nor sound like something she’d do, and he’s confused. He has mixed feelings about this, it feels suddenly empty to imagine a life without her because he’s so used to her company now that…
He sits on the room, silent, and Yamazaki looks weirdly at him. He feels down because his most important rival doesn’t consider him as important enough to know of her sudden departure, and it hurts for some reasons. If he’s gone to her when he had to leave Edo, why does she not reciprocate?
Hijikata interrupts him with a growl. “You’re the only one not noticing what’s around you.”
“I don’t know what you mean Hijikata-san. Please die. And don’t talk of me.”
“Anyway, what are you doing to do with this other girl?”
“Miki? She’s nice, I’ll keep her for now. Are you interested in my life now, Hijikata-san?” He makes a disgusted face, earning him an even louder growl from the concerned.
“You settling down is a miracle, even if…” He pauses. “Never mind, this Miki girl, are you seriously into her? An officer shouldn’t fiddle around women so easily; it will ruin our reputation.”
“Our boss is stalker Hijikata-san. I’m not into anyone, but this one pleases me enough and can bear me; I don’t see why I shouldn’t settle down with her. I need more time before knowing, but she’s fine.”
Hijikata roses up to his feet and glares at him before closing the door. “I guess it’s not like you need to think twice before choosing now. You can go with this girl.”
Okita stays silent and ponders on what Hijikata-san meant. He doesn’t understand.
Him, missing
Life is less fun when China’s not around to be teased, Okita wonders what she’s doing at the moment; killing some aliens or eating? Maybe both at the same time. On one hand side, he’s still bitter about her not telling him that she’s leaving, and on the other hand, he has his own life to worry about first.
Instead of meeting China, he sees Miki now. The girl is enjoyable to stay with because she doesn’t ask or bother him too much and she knows how to read his mood. He’s not into sweet-looking girls like her, but it doesn’t bother him a bit; since she’s just…Great to be with. Okita doesn’t want a happy-happy marriage life; he just wants to build a family with a comprehensive wife.
She makes a good one but he finds himself less and less glad to meet her. It feels weird to see her face instead of China’s devious grins, dating instead of fighting, it’s as if she’s slipped away from his life without leaving a single trace. Well, it’s wrong. He has traces of her on his body, scars she’s left on him through their rather dangerous sparring.
Miki’s holding his arm, and they’re talking in the main shopping district. He decides to buy a kanzashi that suits her elegant Japanese style, as well as her shiny hair. But he picks on randomly; everything suits her right? He doesn’t need to especially care, and the girl’s happy so no complaints.
He walks with her to a restaurant next, she’s talking of some nice toys she’s seen on the new edition of SM ProMag. She doesn’t even blush at the mention of them; he likes her straight-forward ways with him. No need for PDA.
Straight-forward… China’s still on his mind, and he tries to not remember but the fact she’s not here anymore makes his stomach feels weird and uncomfortable. He apologizes and says he’s not feeling well, pays for the food and leaves.
He notices their relationship, him and China’s is not as good as before. He remembers to be often, if not always, with her and bickering. He wonders when they stopped being this way? Lately she’s always somewhere else, doing something else. Maybe when he started playing around girls.
He’s a bit sour and bitter when he comes to the compound. He feels like he should have enjoyed those moments with her now that she’s not here anymore.
Them, a family
Danna and Megane break into his room. They look angry for unknown reasons, and Okita wonders if Hijikata-san did something, or maybe Kondo-san? If that’s so, he doesn’t know why they broke into his room.
“I’m working here, Danna.”
“The work can wait, you damned idiot.” He’s never seen him so angry, it looks like he could kill him at this instant, and so is Megane. “I just learned from your two bosses that you were playing around a girl.”
“First of all, I’m not playing around her. Second, what’s got you in a bunch Danna? That I’m with a girl? Never knew you harboured homo-homo feelings towards me.”
“You’re…I can’t believe it…” Megane stares hard at him. “Didn’t you know Kagura-chan she…You don’t even deserve to know why she left. Okita-san, we’re going to tell you something. If you ever hurt her ever again, when she comes back, it won’t be settled as peacefully as this time. Gin-san, let’s go, he has no clues.”
“Wait Megane, China? Why did she leave? Wasn’t it to realize her dream?” He asks panicked.
“It’s too late to ask now, you will see when she comes back…If she ever does. But can I ask you a question?” Danna looks at him. “How would you feel if she chooses someone else over you? You know, she’s a pretty girl and surely, she won’t come back alone.”
Before he could answer, both of them were gone.
The question troubles him.
She, changed
It’s only four years later when he sees her in the street, buying Sukonbu of all things.
At first he can’t believe his eyes, that she’s here and standing a few feet ahead of him. He’s mesmerized by her sole presence and stands like an idiot in the middle of the street just to admire her. She’s grown even more but is still shorter than him, and her hair is even longer. There’s only one bun to cover her as the red strands reach her back, on her white dress that shows much of her legs.
She bows to the vendor, an old lady, and upon turning she notices him. China smiles slightly and closes in.
“Long time no see,” her dog barks after. “Okita.”
He feels weird when she calls him like that; he feels distressed over their lack of closeness, but he remembers it’s been four years, and they are not sharing any special bond now. “...Hello to you too, China.”
She looks healthy as ever, but he can’t but notice her eyes that look duller than before. They aren’t as glowing as before, and she bears a calm face that doesn’t suit her at all.
“So...You are back?”
“I thought it was the right time to go visit everyone, but I won’t stay for too long.” He feels like she’s drawing a line between them, and he doesn’t want it. “I still have to see Gin-chan and Shinpachi first, so—”
“Why?” He grabs her wrist and stares, hurt, at her. “You didn’t tell me that you were leaving. You just disappeared like that! Like nothing!”
“You were busy at that time, Okita.”
“But we were...You can’t just leave me outside. We’ve fought countless battles together and against each other. Even if I was busy, I would have gone to see you off.”
China stays silent, she seems mixed before talking again. “It’s not like we would have kept our former rivalry longer, so I thought it wasn’t any use to bother you. Now, I have to go.”
“Can’t we talk more? It’s been four years since I’ve seen you. China. Please.”
“Okita. We are former rivals and friends, but nothing more, and it’s impolite to be so insistent with a girl that’s not your wife. I have important news for Gin-chan and Shinpachi.”
She talks so coldly. He feels the distance between them, and he can’t accept it. He doesn’t want this, after four years; four years!
“Do you hate me? Did I do something wrong back then? Why did you leave?” He feels all the questions he’s been asking with time, but she doesn’t reply.
He feels bad.
“I don’t have any like or dislikeness towards you. For the other questions, I’m not willing to answer.”
“I’ve done something, didn’t I? I know I can be dense when it comes to understanding those around me. Tell me—”
She pushes him away and walks ahead. He feels at loss for any words to describe the inner turmoil he feels at the moment. Something is breaking in his body.
He missed her, but she’s now indifferent towards him, and he can’t understand why.

Chapter 1
The terminal was packed with people. Left and right, everywhere Kagura looked, humans, amantos, friends and families reuniting. There was even an overly sweet couple kissing and hugging each other. ”Yuck! Get a room, yes!” Kagura yelled at the couple and acted like she wanted to hurl.
”Kagura-chan!” Shinpachi said and covered his face with a hand. ”You're embarrassing us.” Kagura rolled her eyes and tightened the grip on her umbrella. She didn't need Shinpachi's complaints today, she didn't need to see any annoying lovebirds anywhere, she just needed this day to be over.
”Yare, yare. Calm down you two,” Gintoki said and picked his nose without any shame, like usual.
”Gin-san, please don't do that in public.” Shinpachi said and poked Gintoki's arm a bit. The older samurai yawned lazily and stopped walking.
”Oi, oi! I'm not doing anything, what are you talking about?” Gintoki said and flicked his bugger behind him. Shinpachi stopped walking too and went on to rant something useless to Gintoki. After a short while Kagura noticed that her earth-family had vanished somewhere. She stopped her movement and looked around for them.
Few meters behind Kagura, Gintoki and Shinpachi were having a stupid argument. She couldn't hear what they were saying, but she didn't really care. Kagura glanced at the big screen showing departures. It was almost time, time for her flight to leave.
Kagura had finally made the decision on her 18th birthday, she was going to leave to space and become the most badass alien hunter in the whole damn Galaxy. She though that somebody had to continue the ”family business” Umibouzu had started. Kamui already held the title of craziest baka aniki and Kagura thought that he should stick to that.
Umibouzu had promised Kagura that he would come and pick her up one month after her birthday, and that day was finally here. Gintoki and Shinpachi were first against it, but they knew nothing would change her mind. Shinpachi had asked Kagura about her sudden decision to leave. She told him that this was what she needed right now, more than anything else she needed to leave earth.
Kagura closed her umbrella and placed it next to her bag. She let her eyes roam around the terminal. Big windows of the terminal revealed parts of her beloved home. She had so much there, friends, family, ”a job”, everything a person would need, she had here. So why was she leaving?
Kagura glanced at the clock on the terminal's notice board, time was running out. ”Oi you two! I'm going to be late, thanks to you two idiots!” she shouted, but Gintoki and Shinpachi didn't hear anything. ”Geez...”
Those two had insisted that they wanted to escort Kagura to the terminal and see her off. She liked the idea that her family would be the last people she would say goodbye to.
For the past week Kagura had seen everyone she knew in Edo. Many wished her a happy trip and pleaded for her to return. To return, she asked herself. Kagura hadn't really thought about her return to earth, maybe it was an option, maybe it wasn't.
Otae and Soyo had been the most difficult ones to see. A lot of tears were shed and beautiful words were said. She had said her goodbyes to everyone important to her...everyone but one. Him.
Kagura got fed up with Gintoki and Shinpachi. She cleared her throat and inhaled. ”LET'S GO IDIOTS!” she yelled. Amazingly, they still didn't hear her. All the people around her sure did, but she didn't really care if strangers looked at her weirdly.
”China?” an all to familiar voice asked behind her. Kagura gasped a little and turned on her feet. There he was, the man she had been avoiding since her 18th birthday. Her rival, Okita Sougo, the prince of all sadists. ”Yo! Where have you been hiding?”
Kagura looked at Sougo and tried her best to act casually and pretend that she hadn't been hiding from him for the past month. ”What's up Sadist?” she asked and crossed her arms over her chest.
”What are you doing here?” Sougo asked.
”Nothing much,” she said and shrugged her shoulders. Kagura had gotten so used to see Sougo in his Shinsengumi uniform, so it was quite weird to see him wearing normal clothing, a greenish yukata that suited him well.
Sougo eyed her suspiciously, his eyes dropping to her bag, then returning to look at her. ”Are you going somewhere?” he asked, face as deadpan as the bottom of Gintoki's shoe. ”China?” his voice slightly demanding this time.
Kagura turned her eyes away from him. ”So what if I am?” she muttered quietly, hoping he would just leave her alone.
Sougo's eyes widened for a micro-second, which went un-noticed by Kagura. He placed his hand on his neck and stroked it lightly. ”I didn't know.” A small silence landed between them, both wanting to say something that had been left unsaid. ”China, I-”
”Sougo! There you are!” Kondou said with a cheerful smile. He was approaching the young captain. Sougo glanced at his superior gorilla over his shoulder.
”Just a sec Kondo-san.” Sougo said and shifted his eyes back to his rival. Kagura was looking at him aswell. ”China, I don't know what you've heard, but-”
”I don't know what you're talking about Sadist,” she said to cut him off. She couldn't take it, this wasn't a thing she wanted to talk about. ”In fact-” Kagura said, but her words got stuck in her throat. Sougo frowned his brows a bit in confusion. Kagura's eyes were looking past him, over his shoulder. Her eyes are wide from...shock, he thought to himself.
Sougo turned around to see what was something so surprising that the loud-mouthed Kagura couldn't even speak. As he turned he saw Kondo and someone else. There was a young, fair-skinned woman standing next to Kondo. Sougo took a closer look at the woman. She had cerulean blue eyes and black hair, she was simply stunning.
”Here she finally is Sougo! I'm so happy!” Kondo said and squeezed his hands together and pressed them against his cheek. The young woman bowed shyly to Sougo and giggled sweetly. ”Sougo, meet your fiancée, Haru.”
Sougo bowed out of good manners and stared at the beautiful woman. He realized what or rather who Kagura had been looking at. His suspicions were confirmed then and there, Kagura had known about the arrangement. Why else she would have avoided him for the past month?
Sougo turned quickly to check on Kagura. Unfortunately, the only thing he saw was a crowd of people with meaningless faces. She was gone...Kagura was gone. Sougo wondered was he going to see her ever again, the thought pained him. There was still so much to say.
”Sougo! We have to get going now,” Kondo said and motioned for Haru and Sougo to come with him.
Kagura had run as the first change came to her. She was so shocked to see that woman, Sougo's fiancée. It was a very confusing feeling to experience, her heart couldn't bear the thought of him fit another woman. She didn't stop running until she saw her father standing near the gates.
”There you are! My daughter,” Umibouzu greeted Kagura. She ran to hug her father tightly, tears watering her eyes a bit. She thought that he would think that the tears were for him and nothing more.
”It's good to see you Kagura-chan,” Umibouzu said. Kagura pulled away from the hug and flashed a small smile.
”Are you ready to go?” Umibouzu asked. Kagura lifted up her luggage and hummed.
”Kagura-chan!” Shinpachi's voice called behind her. Gintoki and Shinpachi had finally managed to stop their argument and had tracked her down. ”You're really leaving, huh?”
Kagura turned to face her earth-family. ”Uh-huh, but I'm going to miss you guys so much.”
Gintoki pulled the trio into a huge bear hug. ”We'll miss you too Kagura. Just, remember to pay us a visit every once in a while,” Gintoki said.  Kagura remained silent, focusing on their family hug. She didn't want to admit that never returning was an option she had in mind. Kagura pulled away and walked to her father's side.
”Let's go, yes!” Kagura said and put on a brave smile, covering all the conflicting emotions. Umibouzu grabbed her luggage and the Yato duo entered the gates to the security check. Gintoki and Shinpachi were left watching the disappearing back of their beloved Kagura.
”Gin-san, why did I get the feeling...that she isn't coming back?”
”Have faith Shinpachi, I don't think this is the last time we'll see or hear from her.”

Kagura entered Umibouzu's spaceship after her father. She sat down on one of the passenger seats. ”Kagura, are you okay?” Umibouzu asked. She glanced at her father and silently lifted one thumb up. ”Good, we'll depart shortly, make yourself comfortable.”
”Yes papi,” she said and played with her short ponytails. This was finally happening. No-more seeing Sadist, no more thinking about him. The problem was that he seemed to be the only thing on Kagura's mind. She remembered the day that ruined everything, the day of her 18th birthday.
*
*
It had been a fun night, Kagura's friends had thrown her a surprise party at Otose's bar. Even Okita Sougo and couple of Shinsengumi members had been there. Drinks were flowing all night, Kagura had taken some, but not nearly as much as Sougo.
Kagura was supporting Sougo on their way to the Shinsengumi compound. He was rambling the entire way, he was telling her about his greatest plans to snatch the vice-commander position and how he loved fighting. Kagura listened and laughed at him, he was quite mellow when he was that drunk.
”CHIIINA! You're a great person you know. You're helping me home and I'm so drunk. You're so nice and pretty.”
”Shut up idiot!”
”So pretty,” he said and chuckled to himself. Kagura shook her head, she tried to remember that he was drunk and drunk people say whatever comes to mind.
”We're here Sadist,” Kagura said as they reached the gates of the compound. ”Let's get you to your room.”
”SHHHH! Remember to be quiet! You're not allowed here. No women, said Hijibaka-san,” Sougo said. Kagura shook her head again, feeling very amused about his dumb behaviour. They made it inside the main building. Sougo stopped their walking and lifted Kagura's arm away from him. He straightened his posture and dusted his jacket a bit.
Kagura stared at him, his eyes were no-longer drowsy, he seemed to be fine. ”What's up Sadist?” Kagura asked quietly. ”Sobered up already?”
”Heh, I observed how much you took and followed your lead,” Sougo said, voice quiet but perfectly clear. ”I don't get drunk so easily.
”Huh? Well I thought you were. On the way here you were mumbling such weird things, yes,” Kagura said.
”Such as?”
”You said I was pretty...” Kagura said and blushed, luckily the dim hallway hid her face.
”True, I said that.”
”Then, if you aren't drunk, why the hell am I here?”
Sougo smirked and glared at her so deeply that Kagura felt small shivers. ”I wanted to give you a birthday present, privately.”
Kagura had to swallow, her heart began to beat faster. ”Oh.”
Sougo moved a step closer to Kagura. ”Do you want your present, China?”
Without a moment of hesitation, she answered. ”Uh-huh.” Sougo inhaled at her answer. He took another step closer to Kagura and traced his fingers on her cheek.
”Are you sure?”
”Uh-huh.”
The he pressed her against the dark hallways wall with his body. Kagura gasped slightly, but not in a bad way. It felt good to feel him so close, like it was something she had been wanting for a good while. ”China.”
He cupped her cheeks and leaned to kiss her. His eyes were closed, but Kagura's were wide open from surprise. His lips felt soft on hers and her heart jumped at the feeling. He opened his eyes and stopped the kiss. ”Close your eyes.” Then he kissed her a bit more passionately. The pure feeling of his kiss forced her eyes to flicker close. She placed her hands on his waist.
This wasn't a birthday present she was waiting for, but it was the best one by far. He grabbed her hands from his waist and pressed them against the wall on each side of her head. She arched her back from the sensation of being under control, it was surprisingly exciting.
Sougo broke their kiss and Kagura opened her eyes. He was breathing heavily and Kagura couldn't help but smirk. ”Mmh, China?”
”What bastard?”
”Do you want to stay the night?” he asked. Kagura stared at him, eyes telling him of her surprise and slight hesitation. ”Don't worry, I won't do anything you don't want me to.”
Sougo let her hands go and she let them drop to her sides. Kagura thought about his sudden suggestion. It seemed a bit rushed, but her curiosity won. ”Maybe I'll stay,” Kagura said in a coy voice. He smiled at her and took her hand.
”Come, but quietly.” Kagura nodded and felt her heart racing faster. He lead them deeper into the hallway. When they reached a two-way turn Sougo stopped them.
”China, my room is in this direction,” he said and pointed her the way. ”Last room on the left, I'll be there in a moment.” Sougo let go of Kagura's hand and went to the other direction. Kagura sneaked quietly towards his room. She had to pinch herself. At that moment, everything felt like a dream.
She finally reached his room and was about to slid the door open. Kagura heard voices and froze on the spot. They were coming from a room across Sougo's room. Her curiosity won again. Kagura sneaked closer to the room and slid the door open just enough to peep in a little.
Hijikata and Kondo were sitting side by side, backs facing the door. ”It's best for him Kondo-san,” Hijikata said.
”Yes. I think so too.” Kondo said and nodded his head. Kagura wondered what they were talking about. ”She'll calm him down, I'm sure of it.”
(”She?)
”An arranged marriage is the best choice for him, he isn't going to settle down with anyone if we don't make him,” Hijikata said.
(”An arranged marriage? Poor guy.”)
”Then it's settled Sougo and Haru will meet in one month, we should let him know as soon as possible.”
”I agree Kondo-san.”
Kagura's eyes widened as Sougo's name came out of Kondo's mouth. They had arranged a marriage for him. Kagura felt sick to her stomach, she had to get away from the compound, quickly. Kagura ran, she ran across the halls and by instinct she found her way out. She ran all the way out and to the street.
He was spoken for, belonging to someone else. He never was hers in the first place, but still it hurt to think about it. For months before Kagura's birthday, there was something blooming between them. After the kiss, that feeling of something got bigger, but after what she heard, all of it came crashing down. Kagura wanted to get home, to escape the pain.
Meanwhile Sougo reached his room and slid the door open. ”China?” Unfortunately, no China anywhere. Sougo got worried and stepped back into the hallway. He heard voices coming from the room where Hijikata and Kondo were. Sougo opened the door and the two men turned to look at him. ”Yo! Did you by any change, hear or see anything out of the ordinary?”
Both men shook their heads. ”Sit Sougo, please.” Kondo said.
”I'm actually busy and it's getting a bit late so...”
”Sougo, sit down. We have something to tell you.”
”I really have to go-”
”We have arranged a marriage for you,” Hijikata blurted out. Sougo looked stunned. ”Would you sit down now?”
Sougo entered the room and sat in front of his two superiors. ”What are you saying?” he asked. Kondo and Hijikata explained to him all the details and why he had to accept the marriage. Sougo felt sick to his stomach. He wondered if Kagura had overheard Kondo and Hijikata. He hoped that wasn't the case, maybe she just got really tired and left...maybe?
When Kagura got home, Gintoki was already sleeping. She slipped into her closet and laid on her bed. She had expected the pain to go away as she got away from him. It actually felt worse. After hours of tossing and turning in bed she made the decision to leave. Escape the pain to space, become the best alien hunter and forget about him.
Kagura wrote her father a letter. He answered quickly and promised to pick her up in one month. She convinced herself that leaving earth was going to heal her heart. For the last month Kagura prepared to leave and made sure she avoided seeing Sougo. She seriously couldn't bear to see him.
She knew they only shared a kiss and nothing more than that, but it had been something that felt like it was bound to happen sooner or later. They had been partners in crime and rivals for such a long time already. Maybe she had been in love with him for much longer than she had thought. It wouldn't have felt that horrible if there wasn't love for him in her heart
*
*
After 3 months of intense alien hunting, Kagura felt a little better, still fragile but better. Umibouzu saw that her daughter's heart wasn't fully on the hunting business, but somewhere else. He tried his best to show her the most interesting planets to hunt and Kagura saw his effort and appreciated him for it.
The Yato duo was on their way to planet nearby earth and Kagura was watching her precious planet from the spaceship. ”Kagura-chan, I have something for you.” Kagura turned around to look at her father.
”Yes papi?” she asked. Umibouzu fumbled something from a pile of papers he was carrying.
”A letter from earth.”
Kagura's eyes lit up and her lips curled into a smile. ”Who is it from? Gin-chan? Shinapachi? Anego? Soyo-chan? Who?”
”It says, from the Shinsengumi vice-commander Hijikata Toushiro, for Kagura of the Yorozuya. Urgent matter,” Umibouzu read. ”Do you know him?”
Kagura snatched the letter. ”It's from Mayora, but why he would write for me?”
”I don't know, it came today.”
Kagura sat down and ripped the letter open and began to read.
”Kagura,
I'm asking for your help. So, Sougo is missing and I know you two were sort of close. Maybe you know where he is. Yesterday was his wedding day. When I went to get him, he was frantically walking around his room, rambling that he couldn't do it, that he absolutely wouldn't do it.
I tried to calm him down and told him to stay in his room. I went to get Kondo-san to remind Sougo why he was doing the wedding in the first place. There were some political and financial reasons, but I won't bother you with those.
After one minute me and Kondo-san entered Sougo's room, he was gone. There was a small note on his desk saying: ”Sorry, I can't do this. I'm going to find her.” You are the only alive woman I know he cares about. So, I'm begging you Kagura, please find Sougo and make him return to earth.
His bride's family is long gone, they left on the same day Sougo disappeared, so he isn't getting married anymore. We are just worried. Bring him back to us, please.
Sincerely, Hijikata Toushiro of the Shinsengumi
PS: Kondo-san is crying here non-stop because he blames himself. I can't take it any longer.
Kagura was shaking as she read the letter. She was speechless. Sougo had run from his own wedding. Did he do it for her, Kagura thought to herself. She felt a rush of adrenaline pumping in her veins. There was no longer any pain, only enthusiasm. ”PAPI!”
Umibouzu almost fell off his chair. ”What?”
She ran to her father and jumped up and down. ”We have some hunting to do! We have to hunt down a missing person!”
”Okay, where was the person last seen?”
”On earth, he's actually looking for me.”
Umibouzu looked at his daughter and a smile forced it way on his face. His daughter seemed more like herself again. ”Let's start from earth then, buckle up.”
Kagura jumped on the co-pilot seat and squeezed the letter in her hands. ”I'm going to find you chihuahua,” she said quietly and smiled from her heart, something she hadn't been able to do in months.

The scariest man on earth.
Okikagu week 2018, day 5: death.
Okita Sougo.
The most feared man on the entire planet. The man with a billion of stories to tell and no one to listen, because he’s scary. That’s what people say about him, anyway. They never even met him in person, but they still like to spread rumours around, half of which aren’t even true.
But he knows that’s how people are generally; scared out of their minds by someone who exists as a villain in their heads. He can understand, he has fears too. For example, the ocean makes him shiver in fright. What’s even at the bottom of that vast water?
He wasn’t a villain, though. Not as much as the next person.
Still, he continued his journey, doing his job like he always have, but also searching for a kind soul who would be willing to listen to his tales.
It didn’t happen for a few years until his job called him in a hospital located in Japan. He had business there for a few days and that’s where he met a strange girl.
Her name was Kagura and she was the most intriguing creature he had ever laid his eyes on. Her hair were a bright vermillion and her eyes as blue as the midday sky. She was a bit smaller than him and she was always talking.
But the most important thing about this girl was that she listened to him. She didn’t fear him, she let him approach her; she even let him into her room. Well, her hospital room, that is. Kagura talked to him first, which surprised Sougo because he always thought himself invisible.
“Why are you so gloomy?” Were her first words, strangely enough.
“That’s my regular attire.” He answered coldly. He wasn’t expecting a conversation about his clothes.
“If you say so, weirdo.” She giggled and walked past him.
“Hey! Don’t talk to me like that, do you know who I am?” He was sure she’d say yes, like everyone he asked the question to.
“No.” She waved her hand around, dismissing him. He stood there, watching her as she limped her way to her room. This was a first. Never had he encountered someone who doesn’t know him.
-x-
He came back every day to the hospital, if only to see Kagura for a second. Sometimes he talked to her and he—or she did, he wasn’t sure—received many suspicious looks from nurses and other patients. She didn’t seem to care, so he didn’t, either.
He didn’t tell her his identity. He didn’t want to scare her off. He liked her company and he appreciated the way she was so carefree. It was a big change from the usual dark aura the hospital carried. She seemed at peace with her disease.
Kagura didn’t talk about it often, but Sougo was able to catch nurses talking about her condition. She inherited her mother’s illness and even if Kagura was only in her twenties, she was bound to die from it sooner or later. Her chances leaned more towards sooner, though. And that saddened Sougo greatly, who finally understood why the girl could communicate so easily with him and why he was here.
-x-
Sougo liked Kagura a lot. He doesn’t know how that was possible, but he did. He loved her and deep down, he knew the feeling was reciprocated.
On his last day in the hospital, he decided to maybe share his secret with Kagura. He was welcomed with an empty room, no more flowers decorating the desk and no more posters smiling at him from the walls.
His heart hurt; he was too late. He was never too late, he was always perfectly on time.
He set off in the halls of the hospital and that’s when he found what he was searching for; Kagura.
“Kagura…” She was crying besides her corpse, softly sniffling. When she heard him, she jumped up and looked at him with teary eyes.
“How is this possible? I’m—” She struggled with her words, not able to utter the word.
“You passed away. You succumbed to your disease, at exactly 2:33 p.m. I’m here to take you with me.”
“W—what? What are you?” The sadness in her eyes changed into fright and Sougo’s fists balled to his sides.
“I’m your guide to the other side. I’m death.” The shock on her face broke his heart. He knew this would happen. She was as scared of death as the next person, after all.
“No, no, no! I can’t die, not now, not now!” No matter how she pretended when she was alive, Sougo knew she didn’t want to die. It was only natural that she’d hate him for taking her away. But it still pained him. It still hurt. “I hate you, why did you kill me?”
He didn’t kill her, this wasn’t his doing. Death only existed to help guide people to another place. It wasn’t his fault, but with his experience, people usually don’t care about his side.
“Let’s go, Kags. It’s time to go.” He grabbed her hand, forcing her out of the room. She struggled and tried to set herself free, but there was no tricking death. She screamed, cursed and begged. Sougo kept walking and whispered. “I’m so sorry.”
As he guided Kagura to her final destination, Death, Okita Sougo, shed his first tear since his cruel creation.

OkiKagu Week 2018: Day 3 - Routine
Author’s Notes: PG-13, Limey?
Drabble, drabble, drabble.
It was every Tuesday after 7PM at the love motel about 5km from their respective work places. Sometimes, when Okita had a weekend off it would be an endless marathon.
Room 312.
Okita would be the first to arrive to the room, lounging on the sofa with his uniform half way undone.
Kagura would always be late making the excuse that her own work kept her up.
He would complain, and she would refute as she undressed.
Arguments would get loud and turn into soft moans.
Kisses on the mouth weren’t allowed. Kagura wanted it to be her first to be special. Everything else was free for the taking.
Okita didn’t care, all he wanted was sex. He was fine without the kisses on the mouth. Though, he loved kissing her other lips to make her toes curl.
Kagura was in it mostly for curiosity.
She fought aliens and other monsters, however, the male anatomy was puzzling to her. She was too embarrassed to ask her father, and when the subject of sex came up with Gintoki he pretended to hear nothing and shut her up with more food. Shinpachi was a forever a virgin, so no luck there.
The subject came up after a sparring session at the park. Taking a water break, Kagura blurted the topic, rambling it was not fair that she was not formally educated about it and didn’t have anyone else to talk about it. Okita coolly offered to answer all her questions, even use himself has a demonstration, and suggested that they use each other for practice.
Initially, she was thrilled to learn, now it became an unhealthy, empty habit. Her libido was through the roof and Okita was happy to oblige her cravings. However, in her heart, it felt like something was missing…
