When we lived in Seattle, we tried to take an annual late winter trip to a sunny place, usually a week in Southern California. Sadly that tradition was broken when we returned to ole Virginny in the mid-aughts, and, although we went to SoCal for a wedding last winter, no such trip in 2024. I miss the desert!

I’m sorry...wtf...Elena hasn’t realized it’s Klaus?! How did I miss that. It makes me laugh because I’m from Virginia and I know ol’ Virginny is a little backwards with their Sex Ed but even I gathered that 1+1=3. Elena, get your shit together.

I mean, I’m from Louisiana, and we think Virginia is super sophisticated compared to us ol’ backwater bayou folk 😂😂😂So, this definitely isn’t a slight against Virginia! 

The reason she hasn’t realized it’s Klaus is because he’s a vampire, ie, dead. She would no more suspect him of fathering a child than Damon or Stefan (and of course, she was also sleeping with them last fall). The fact that she found out in December about a pregnancy that started in October, when so many things happened in between, is also probably muddling her clarity. If she thought for one second that Klaus was capable, then she would suspect him. 

And, also, yeah, it’s definitely supposed to make you laugh that she’s just SO off base!

We initially mistook this headline to mean that the couple were seaching the lyrics of Blues songs for appearances of Bigfoot.  Cue Harry James' "Feet Draggin' Blues," but not Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Stocking Feet Blues" (because Bigfoot goes barefoot).  Bob Marley sang, "Your feet is just too big for your shoes."  The old folk song "Ol' Virginny Never Tire" mentions how "the hollow of her foot makes a hole in the groun'."  There's an old folk rhyme about "Johnny Bigfoot" who would have to kick two cows out of their skins to have shoes that fit.  The Ink Spots sang how "there were four of us: me, your big feet, and you."  Then there's the Moody Blues, who sing of how "the earth shook under my feet."  Johnny Cash's "Big Foot" is about a different Bigfoot—the Miniconjou chief.  We're little acquainted with the Blues genre, so no dount many more Sasquatches are lurking in those sonic realms.  Someone should write a book about how Bigfoot hides in music.

The Oak Marr market on Wednesday mornings has returned from COVID-19. It is again a midweek source for fresh corn and other summer delicacies. Tiny compared to the famed farmers market on Wednesdays in Santa Monica, but 4000 km closer to where I live.

Messages- Multiculturism ‘Life at ‘Ol’ Virginny’s Hole’ Kara Walker, 2000.

Kara Walker is an American Contemporary painter, silhouettist, printmaker and installation artist; she often draws upon topics such as gender, race, sexuality and violence within her works in order to educate and raise awareness. She is best known for her room-size tableaux of black cut-paper silhouettes, one in particular being the creation, ‘Slavery! Slavery! Life at ‘Ol’ Virginny’s Hole’ which was completed in 2000. This room-sized display of screen prints show sketches from Plantation Life; these scenarios expose the ongoing psychological injury caused by the tragedy of slavery. 

This exhibition is organised as a narrative which is cleverly done by the artist to force the viewers to engage with contemporary and historical racist portrayals of African Americans. The effect that the silhouettes create is that there is a strong contrast between the wall and the prints which mean that the focus is drawn to the narrative. Personally, I think that this exhibition is incredibly powerful and vital in order to educate and inform viewers.
